Johnny "Bee" Badanjek got his professional start in music, at the ripe old age of 16 as the drummer for the Detroit rock and roll band Billy Lee and The Rivieras, later changing their name to Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels, where he was described as an "unknown genius" for his drum break on their single "Devil with a Blue Dress On". he co-founded The Rockets, in which he was the drummer and vocalist, as well as songwriter. He's toured Europe with Nils Lofgren as well as recording an album with him. Besides the already mentioned, He's worked in some compacity (Playing or writing) with The Romantics, Broken Toys, Dr. John, Ronnie Montrose, Edgar Wither, Bob Segar, Ted Nugent, the legendary Alice Cooper and others. He has also stayed extremely active in the local rock scene with bands such as The Stammering Flames, The Howling Diablos and The Murder Hornets to name a few. This brings us to want we're here to talk about tonight. Johnny is a self-taught artist whose work has graced album covers, art collection and gallery walls for years. Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce a true renaissance man, Mr. Johnny Bee Badanjek.
Ben Kweller's music first stole my heart back in the early oughts when he released his wonderful debut album Sha Sha, and I have been a huge admirer of his work ever since. I've also had the good fortune of his friendship for more than twenty years, so it was amazing to finally get together with him for the LSQ podcast. Episode 123 features a deep and poignant conversation with BK about his entire creative history, including his excellent latest album, Cover The Mirrors, which was written in the wake of the tragic death of his teenage son Dorian. In addition to sharing how that tremendous loss ended up inspiring him to reconnect with making music in the innocent way he'd done as a kid, he details what those early creative years were like for him — writing Beatles-inspired love songs on the piano as a little kid, starting his band Radish after hearing Nirvana, hustling to get Radish their first shows at Chauncey's Place, a local billiards hall in Greenville, Texas, eventually getting rides from his parents to Dallas to play shows there, recording Radish's demos and the ensuing bidding war to sign them, and more. I was also fascinated to hear about his family connection to legendary guitarist Nils Lofgren of the E Street Band and Neil Young's Crazy Horse (as well as being a brilliant artist in his own right), and how Lofgren provided key support at multiple points during Ben's early days. And then we get into his moves toward stepping out on his own as an artist, including how support from the Lemonheads' Evan Dando helped catalyze his solo career. Ben also reminisces about the heyday of the New York City indie scene he was part of in the oughts, and how allyship with bands like the Strokes and Moldy Peaches and Kings of Leon (although not from NYC, the Kings regular touring companions of Ben's and honorary NYC scenesters) created a vital support system. On more recent topics, Ben reveals that Radish's lost sophomore album, Discount Fireworks, which includes early versions of songs like “Wasted & Ready” and “Harriet's Got A Song,” will finally be coming out via his own label, The Noise Company. He also talks about the work he's been doing recently to collaborate with Jason Schwartzman (who is among the guests on Cover The Mirrors) to record new music for Schwartzman's long-dormant band Coconut Records.

Musician, recording artist, multi instrumentalist and songwriter Nils Lofgren joins Frank Mackay on this episode of The Frank Mackay Show!
Otras sorpresas fueron Darkness On The Edge Of Town y Human Touch. En este capítulo hemos recogido vuestras reacciones, eperamos en próximas semanas reacciones en directo, seguimos recibiendo notas de voz al +34 670 27 91 60, nos escuchamos.

Pat Arnold has had quite a life. Born in 1946 she grew up in LA, and was in an abusive marriage with two kids while still a teenager. In 1965 she got a chance to audition for Ike and Tina Turner's band as an “Ikette”. She got the gig and left her children in the care of her parents. This eventually took her to London where she fell into the orbit of The Rolling Stones, and she decided to stay behind there to establish herself as a solo artist, signing to Stones' manager Andrew Loog Oldham's label Immediate Records, home of the Small Faces, members of whom ended up writing songs for her and backing her on some of her recordings. She also toured with them, and is the backing vocalist on Itchycoo Park and Tin Soldier, two of their biggest hits. She had hits under her own name too, including her recordings of Angel Of The Morning and The First Cut Is The Deepest. She also recorded with Rod Stewart. In the 70s she appeared on recordings by the likes of Nick Drake, Graham Nash, and Nils Lofgren. She toured with Eric Clapton and recorded with Barry Gibb although most of these recordings remained unreleased for decades. She sadly lost a daughter in a car accident in the mid-70s, and along with not being able to further her career as a solo artist, she seems to view this as somewhat of a lost decade. As well as being cast in Starlight Express, the 80s saw her work with Steel Pulse, The Beatmasters and Roger Waters, as well appearing on Peter Gabriel's smash hit Sledgehammer. She first came into my orbit in the late 90s through her collaboration with Ocean Colour Scene, and the early 2000s saw her tour extensively with Roger Waters. In recent years she finally completed the album she started with Barry Gibb and Eric Clapton decades earlier, as well as a brand new studio album recorded and produced by former podcast guest Steve Craddock of Ocean Colour Scene and Paul Weller fame. She has a new career spanning box set entitled “Soul Survivor - A Life In Song” and I had a fantastic time talking to Pat about her life and career. Instagram: @sendingsignalspodcast

In the final episode of Season 2, Charles welcomes Jim Turbert, an American communication technologist and podcaster residing in Rotterdam. Jim reflects on his first concert at age 13, where Ringo Starr's performance left a lasting impression, partly thanks to his music-loving uncle who influenced his musical tastes. He recounts various memorable concerts, including a powerful Afghan Wigs show in Boston, where lead singer Greg Dooley's storytelling made the performance unforgettable, even despite later learning Dooley's on-stage declaration of being on acid was untrue.Jim shares his appreciation for technically proficient artists like Mike Watt and Nels Cline, recounting a particularly electrifying performance that displayed exceptional guitar skills. His experiences underscore the importance of venue acoustics and crowd energy, such as how silence and attention at a Sigur Rós concert added to the immersive quality of the show. Conversely, he describes a disappointing Eagles concert during their 'When Hell Freezes Over' tour due to multiple breaks and inflated egos.A standout anecdote involves Jim losing a shoe while crowd-surfing at a Nirvana concert, only to have Kurt Cobain toss it backstage, leaving him to navigate the chilly New England night unshod. Amid these personal stories, Jim also touches on the broader implications of concert experiences, including nostalgic reflections on hitchhiking back from a Sonic Youth concert with friends and the pure joy of witnessing an early White Stripes performance in a frat house setting. In addition to sharing concert stories, Jim speaks about his podcast, 'Feel Free to Deviate,' which delves into people's career paths and their relationships with success. The podcast captures various personal and professional journeys, underscoring Jim's curiosity and communication skills.BANDS: Afghan Wigs, Aerosmith, Beatles, Black Crows, Blackfoot, Breeders, Clarence Clemens, Deep Purple, Dire Straits, Dr. John, The Eagles, Joe Walsh, Led Zeppelin, Living Color, Lounge Acts, Mason Ruffner, Ministry, Minutemen, Nazareth, Nick Cave, Nils Lofgren, Otoboke Beaver, Porno for Pyros, Radiohead, Ringo Starr, Rolling Stones, Sigur Rós, Soundgarden, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Sonic Youth, Ten Years After, the Doors, U2, Walter Trout, White Stripes, Willie Preston.VENUES: T. Charlie Overbey, once labeled the “Punk Rock Spy In The House Of Honky Tonk" by none other than Lemmy of Motorhead, has redefined the outlaw ethos of Americana music. That's never been more evident than with the release of his new album, aptly titled In Good Company. A revisit to decades of writing and recording sessions from studios around the world, it is, in effect, the perfect summation of a career that stretches back nearly 30 years, with guest contributors that include such superstars as Nils Lofgren, Marcus King, Jaime Wyatt, Charlie Starr, Rami Jaffee, Jimmy Vivino, Duane Betts, Eddie Spaghetti, Chris Masterson, Danny B Harvey, and Sarah Gayle Meech, it confirms his standing as one of the more important figures in the cow punk movement…and more. A renaissance man of sorts, Charlie's also made his name in the fashion industry with his well-received line of custom hats, Lone Hawk Hats, which finds him as a one man entrepreneur. They've been worn by artists such as Lainey Wilson, members of the Foo Fighters, Sheryl Crow, Marcus King, and Tim McGraw & Faith Hill from the popular television series “1883.”On the episode of My Backstage Pass, Charlie makes a return appearance and speaks with Lee and Billy about his new album, his career in general and his non-stop flow of continuing creativity. Neil Young, Talking Stick Amphitheater, Phoenix, AZ, 4/27/2024RAGGED GLORYMaybe Neil Young isn't as spry as he used to be, but who is? At 78, to be playing hard core rock with the passion he displays isn't only a goddam miracle, it's a revelation. And, just like young Micah Nelson, who filled in for Nils Lofgren (who's on tour with his other Sensei, Bruce Springsteen) to jam with Crazy Horse stalwarts Billy Talbot on bass and Ralph Molina on drums - demonstrates a generational melding that gives hope to us aging rockers. So, also when my son suggested that he and I fly to Phoenix to catch Neil's latest (I won't say last because who the fuck knows) tour, I gratefully accepted the familial love that was being offered. And, what a show it was! The opening act of Reverend Billy and the Church of the Stop Shopping Choir was a weird, trippy, and funk-fueled way to begin the evening. But since combining positive energy against Climate Change with tornado-like rock and roll force is Neil's thing, it didn't surprise me that he recruited this legendary street performer to be his emissary. The early spring evening temp in Phoenix was perfect, and Neil was in a generous mood to give this fans what they craved - the golden oldies from Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, Zuma, and Rust Never Sleeps - with a short acoustic interlude playing Comes a Time and Heart of Gold (which everybody sang along to). It felt like a fucking campfire. And, looooong kick ass jams, which is what my son was craving. Down by the River and Cortez the Killer were at least 15 minutes each. And, what Neil may have lost in dexterity, he more than makes up for with heart-tugging, sonic crunching lyricism. For my money, he's one of the best rock guitarists who ever slung an axe. There are compensations to getting older; one of which is sharing your heroes with your children, and having them love them along with you.

I have listeners worldwide on every continent in 200 countries, and it has won several awards! My guests have included many of the world's most famous musicians and other creatives.Last year to celebrate the 2nd Anniversary I played excerpts from several guest interviews. But for this 3rd Anniversary show I wanted to do something different - and fun. So here's what I decided. After each interview I ask my guest to record a short promo for the podcast. I use these promos at the beginning of other guest interviews. Everyone does their promo a little differently in their own style. After all, they're artists! So I thought it would be fun to put together a montage of promos featuring a slew of my guests. The entire list is below.I want to thank my guests and my listeners for the success of the podcast. Label: Atlantic 2820Year: 1971Condition: M-Last Price: $12.00. Not currently available for sale. What a surprisingly great single! The A side is Stills at his power-poppy best with an absolutely great top 40 hit (though it didn't actually make it there), and the B side is a funky-country-bluesy-Hendrixy workout that's irresistable! Shows how much great stuff you can fit on a little 45 when you really try. :-) The A side, incidentally, features Nils Lofgren and Eric Clapton joining Stills on guitars. Note: This beautiful copy comes in a vintage Atlantic Records factory sleeve. The record has pristine Mint Audio and Labels!
Oh, what a night! Our guest is legendary, superbly talented guitar player Michael Staertow. He is currently a member of the legendary band, The Guess Who, which is currently gearing up to release its latest creation, Plein D'Amour. Band members Derek Sharp, Michael Staertow, Leonard Shaw, Michael Devin, and founding member, Garry Peterson have crafted a collection of songs that raises the bar and continues to take things up a notch both musically and sonically. Before The Guess Who, Michael was the guitarist for Lou Gramm. Michael is one of only a few guitar players to work with Lou Gramm, the voice of “Hot Blooded,” “Head Games,” “Juke Box Hero,” “I Want to Know to What Love Is” and other signature songs of the classic-rock era. That makes him a full-fledged member of a significant guitar-playing fraternity that also includes Foreigner founder Mick Jones, Nils Lofgren and Vivian Campbell. Michael has been the focus of articles in Guitar World, Guitar One and Vintage Guitar magazines, and he was featured in Gbase.com's Gearhead Gazette as well as featured on many popular podcasts. An aspiring vlogger, Michael captures short scenes from life on the road with Lou Gramm and artists like Dennis Elliot and Deen Castronovo to share on social media. Michael has also added Rock & Roll Fantasy Camp “Rock Star Counselor” to his pedigree.

Grateful Dead's 1982 Show Highlights and Unpopular TunesLarry Mishkin, introduces a Grateful Dead show from August 28th, 1982, featuring an opener where Jerry Garcia stumbles over lyrics. Larry shares insights into the band's performance, suggesting they might have been dosed that day. He discusses the history of the Grateful Dead at Woodstock, why they were omitted from the film, and a song called "Keep Your Day Job," disliked by fans and dropped from their repertoire. Larry contrasts it with the successful breakout of "West LA Fadeaway" that night, highlighting the unique way the Grateful Dead introduced and refined songs in their concerts.Produced by PodConx Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergRecorded on Squadcast INTRO: Bertha Track No. 1 3:16 – 4:46 Great opener, as always. One month after my first show and Jerry still can't remember the words. So instead we focus on the jam. He may fall short in lyrics but his playing is electric. Story is that the band was supposedly dosed that day and the comments reflect that the band was “ON”. SHOW #1: I Used To Love Her But It's All Over Now Track No. 7 1:05 – 2:22 It's All Over Now" is a song written by Bobby Womack and his sister-in-law Shirley Womack.[1] It was first released by The Valentinos, featuring Bobby Womack, in 1964. The Rolling Stones heard it on its release and quickly recorded a cover version, which became their first number-one hit in the United Kingdom, in July 1964. The Rolling Stones' version of "It's All Over Now" is the most famous version of the song. It was first released as a single in the UK, where it peaked at number 1 on the UK Singles Chart, giving the Rolling Stones their first number one hit.[5] It was the band's third single released in America, and stayed in the Billboard Hot 100 for ten weeks, peaking at number 26. Months later it appeared on their second American album 12 X 5. The song was a big hit in Europe and was part of the band's live set in the 1960s. Cash Box described it as a "contagious cover of the Valentinos' click" and "an infectious thumper that should head right for chartsville.” Covered by almost everybody in the music industry from the Stones to Ry Cooder to Nils Lofgren, Wide Spread Panic, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and even Molly Hatchet (Flirtin With Disaster) Covered by the Dead 154 times with Bobby singing. Frist on September 6, 1969 - Family Dog at the Great Hightway Last on July 2, 2995 – Deer Creek SHOW #2: Day Job Track No. 10 2:52 – 4:05 First time played in concert. Second set openerEventually played 57 times Last time on April 4, 1986 at Hartford Civic Center Per Robert Hunter in “A Box of Rain” collection of his lyrics, “this song was dropped from the Grateful Dead repertoire at the request of the fans. Seriously” First song ever ‘rejected' by the Deadheads! And the band listened to them and stopped playing it! But WHY was it so universally unpoplular? “a lot of people thought it was the band making fun of/scolding deadheads who spent all their time following around the band. Hunter kind of hinted at that at one point in an interview I think.” “Hippies don't work” “It sucks” There are a few fans who liked the jamming or could relate to the song, but overall, NOPE. SHOW #3: West LA Fadeaway Track No. 12 1:08 – 2:35 Breakout version of this song, along with Day Job. Five years later In The Dark was released with Wet LA on there, but Day Job did not make the cut. Dead would play this song 141 times in concert Last was June 30, 1995 at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh Always a fan favorite, great music, fun lyrics (only Hunter could work “copasetic” into song lyrics) SHOW #4: Playin' In The Band Track No. 14 1:50 – 3:10 Great version, very upbeat (a dosed band?) and sharp, Bobby right there with his inflection on PPPPLyaing in the BAAAnd, very sharp. I like this clip because it shows the transition from the hard charging opening of the song into a more mellow sound that signifies the jumping off point for the band into a Playin jam that could go anywhere. In this case, almost 20 minutes before segueing into Drums>Space>The Wheel>The Other One>Truckin'>Black Peter>Playin Reprise. What an amazing run of music. Great tunes, great jamming, outside in Oregon, what else could a Head ask for? Some clean Orange Sunshine or whatever the band was on! OUTRO: Dupree's Diamond Blues Track No. 20 1:05 – 2:24 This song was written by Hunter/GarciaIt appeared on the Dead's third album, Aoxomaxoa (released June 20, 1969). First played on January 24, 1969 at the Avalon Ballroom Last played on October 13, 1994 at MSG Played a total of 83 times. "Dupree's Diamond Blues" is based on an American folk song titled "Frankie Dupree," which was based on a real historical figure named Frank Dupree.According to In The Pine: Selected Kentucky Folksongs, Dupree tried robbing a diamond wedding ring from a jewelry store in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1921. He intended to give the ring to his girlfriend Betty. When a police officer showed up, Dupree shot him dead. He then fled to Chicago where he killed another officer and wounded others.Authorities eventually apprehended Dupree while he was getting his mail. They shipped him back to Atlanta where he was executed on September 1, 1922. Giggles: The term "jelly roll" was once common African American slang for a woman's genitalia. The great ragtime pianist Jelly Roll Morton took his name from that very meaning. In 1924, Morton recorded an influential jazz song titled "Jelly Roll Blues," which is most likely what Hunter is referencing here. In the late ‘60's and early ‘70's the band played it more frequently. Although more in the Americana style adopted by the Dead at the beginning of the ‘70's than the primal Dead from the ‘60's. But it became linked with primal Dead by being part of so many shows from that period. On the Fillmore West complete recordings for Feb. 27, 28 and March 1,2 on both the first and third night the band opened the second set with this song into Mountains of the Moon before launching in the Dark Star>St. Stephen>The Eleven>Lovelight suite made famous on Live Dead. But after that it just kind of fell off the band's radar except for certain tours where it would show up for three or four shows before again getting pushed to the side. Very enduring.
Nils Lofgren joined Bruce Springsteen's band in 1984 as a guitarist and vocalist, right in time for Bruce's legendary Born in the U.S.A tour. Musician, Producer and Concert organizer Ron Newmyer is a big proponent of promoting local musicians. Under the auspices of Bandhouse Gigs, which celebrates its 20th Anniversary in 2024, Ron and others organize two tribute concerts a year that promote area musicians by putting on multi-artist events honoring an artist we all love. From Nils Lofgren to Bob Dylan to Woodstock, to this year's concerts focused on Fountains of Wayne and Tom Petty. Ron also founded Newmyer Flyer which on a smaller scale hosts local performers doing different types of tributes which will include the Beatles, LA artists/musicians and the songs of Burt Bacharach. And how interesting to hear about his start playing with Nils Lofgren and touring all over the world with him.

Millionaires are getting into heated political disputes during cheeky network game shows, boomer musicians are protesting because a cage fighting commentator who used to feed people kangaroo dicks has been asking too many questions about a pandemic that has lasted two years and indirectly led a prominent journalist to masturbate in front of his coworkers. Hi pals, We know we said that we were taking a pause from publishing as we cook up Season 3 of The Culture Journalist, but we couldn't resist jumping back in for a quick one-off about a topic we just can't shake: Neil Young (et al.) vs. Spotify. The TL;DR is that Young, on the heels of an open letter by a cadre of scientists, medical professionals, and academics, threatened to pull his catalog from the streaming giant last week if it didn't do more to curtail the spread of misinformation surrounding COVID-19 and vaccines. He pointedly called for the removal of one of the platform's biggest (and most lucrative) sources of said questionable material, The Joe Rogan Experience, writing in a letter to his team: “They can have Rogan or Young. Not both.” After Spotify chose to stand by Rogan, Young made good on his word (though he since deleted the above post from his Times-Contrarian website) and has since been directing his fans to check out his tunes on Spotify competitors like Amazon and Apple. Joni Mitchell, Nils Lofgren, and Graham Nash pulled their music as well, and the hashtag #cancelspotify enjoyed a day or two of virality. The situation is still unfolding, and it's unclear what impact it will have on Spotify beyond a temporary stock price dip and anecdotal reports of users canceling their subscriptions. But the saga — shocker — proved to be a particularly spicy morsel of catnip for the culture wars, sparking arguments around free speech, censorship, and corporate responsibility that feel all the more vertiginous at a time when conservatives are attempting to ban books from school curricula and libraries across the country. All of which is to say, we're pretty fired up. After years of observing how Spotify and its peers have impacted the lives of artists and the music industry as a whole, it feels vindicating to finally see the company receive a bit of (mainstream) scrutiny for its controversial business practices. But it's also been frustrating to watch the reckoning play out in this particular way — like we're seeing society collectively fixate on the symptoms of the problem and not the fundamental brokenness of a streaming economy that reduces everything it touches to a widget in its unstoppable quest for profit and growth. Join us as we contemplate how the fiasco feels like such a perfect storm of internet-era attentional dynamics, how crying “Ivermectin” on a podcast isn't really that different from crying “fire” in a theater, and whether it's time to revisit the notion that all the music in the world needs to be free and accessible to everyone, all the time.
