It's no secret that women's wealth is growing (hello, Great Wealth Transfer) and that we're investing in the stock market in larger numbers than ever before. A 2023 study by Fidelity found that 60 percent of women are invested in the stock market, up from just 44 percent in 2018. Michele Cagan, author of Stock Market 101, wants to see that number get even higher. Cagan has spent her career as a CPA and financial mentor working with clients to demystify investing because she knows that getting started can be intimidating, anxiety-inducing, and confusing. She joins us to bust the top 10 myths she hears from people when they get started investing. In Mailbag, we hear from a listener who's feeling unhappy in her corporate job and is wondering if her family is financially stable enough for her to be able to transition back to freelancing. Chapters: 00:00 - Introduction 04:05: The Top 10 Myths and Facts About Investing 24:05 - Transition to Mailbag 29:52 - Jean's Advice on Job Satisfaction vs. Financial Stability Takeaways: Women's wealth is growing, and they are investing in the stock market in larger numbers than ever before. Investing knowledge is crucial for women across generations to start and stay invested. Women tend to be more risk-averse and consider their financial choices in a broader context, making them better investors. Investing with goals in mind is essential, and socially responsible investing can align with personal values while still generating returns. CPA & Author, Michele Cagan chats about why saving for retirement is important at any age, easy ways to get started and how to deal with life’s many obstacles that get in the way. Plus CentsAble Bobbi shares tips for finding money for retirement savings, in any budget!
Tom Lydon, editor of ETFTrends.com, said that investors looking for a trend play in a market dominated by headlines of and reactions to coronavirus might consider KraneShares MSCI All China Health Care Index, making a tactical play on a defensive emerging-markets sector that balances the fundamentals of China's enormous demographics with the reactions to the news. Lydon, in describing the fund, did suggest that investors only consider it as a trend-following type of investment, and suggested that buyers might want to follow short-term moving averages to set their stops. Also on the show, author Michele Cagan discusses her new primer on debts and how to get out of them, Anuj Nayar of LendingClub.com talks about a study on the reasons why men and women keep financial secrets from their partner, and Barry James of the James Advantage Funds talks stocks in the Market Call.
Let's get back to the basics. Everyone talks about retirement tools, projections, timelines, and tax strategies...what about answering, "How do I begin?" If that's you, we've got you covered on today's show because we're talking to CPA Michele Cagan about Retirement 101. We'll start off with how you fare against other savers (or non-savers), and then discuss how you should frame retirement. Is it one long process? Should you begin with picking investments? We'll cover all of that and more on today's show. Student loan borrowers everywhere cheered recently when a Navy vet had his loans discharged in court (something people said couldn't be done). In our headline segment we'll talk to attorney Leslie Tayne about how that happened, and maybe spill a little bad news (spoiler) about you and your student loans. But don't worry--all hope isn't lost. Leslie will also share some good advice for student loan borrowers. Of course, that's not all. We'll also throw out the Haven Life line to a lucky listener AND save time for some of Doug's cat vs. dog trivia. It's another fun day down in the basement. Hope you can join us!

Today's guest, Michele Cagan, says that it probably IS for you...but maybe not in the way you'd traditionally think. Sure, you can go fix up and flip houses or become a landlord, but Michele shares LOTS of other ways to invest in real estate as well, and gives us five reasons why you should at least think about it. Whether you're a seasoned real estate investor or newbie, there's something for everyone today in Michele's visit to the basement! In our headlines segment: what's the WORST age to take social security? How does the system work in the first place? While it's complicated, we'll share the worst of the worst AND give you some basics on how to start thinking about YOUR payout. In our second headline, Charles Schwab is seeing HUGE returns from their new hybrid robo-meets-human advisor program. It seems these people chasing robos might just want some human advice...strange (smell the sarcasm in that sentence? We'll explain.) Jill Gonzalez, spokesperson for WalletHub, said that her site's annual 4th of July survey found that millions of Americans are feeling more financial freedom this year, but that nearly one-quarter of Americans wish they could be free of credit-card debt, second by a hair only to over-eating as something people want to cut back on. The study also showed that Americans believe that the federal government is watching their spending, tracking their credit-card activity, despite no real proof or reason to believe it is. Also on the show, author Michele Cagan talks about real-estate investing to generate income streams, Sam McBride of New Constructs puts the Securities and Exchange Commission in the Danger Zone over a recent rules change, and we rebroadcast a recent Market Call with Charlie Bobrinskoy of the Ariel Funds.

CPA, Michele Cagan shares tax saving tips and how to keep more of your money, all year long.
If there's a personal finance topic I'm happy to come back to again and again, it's budgeting. Budgeting is the foundation, the very cornerstone of a great financial plan. Like many things in the world of finances, it's simple, but rarely easy. My guest today is Michele Cagan, a Certified Public Accountant on a mission to help other moms find secure financial footing. Michele spent years working for one of the biggest accounting firms in the world, putting on a suit every day and trekking down to their Wall Street office, helping some of America's biggest and most successful companies grow their revenues and protect their assets. When her son was born, she left the corporate world, and her life changed. She got divorced and there were times she couldn't make ends meet, and long periods where she lived paycheck to paycheck, desperately hoping no unexpected expenses would crop up… but they almost always did. That's when Michele started Single Mom CPA, writing accessible financial books and articles for other single moms hoping to secure their financial freedom. Her new book is Budgeting 101: From Getting Out of Debt and Tracking Expenses to Setting Financial Goals and Building Your Savings, Your Essential Guide to Budgeting. And in today's episode, we take a deep dive into budgeting - the dos and don'ts, and practical tips to get you on the right course with your money. Here’s my conversation with Michele Cagan, author of Budgeting 101, in episode 381 of Informed Choice Radio.
If you're like most people during the big holiday season, it's not really a question of IF you go over your budget, but WHEN--and how badly. With another "can't miss" deal around every corner who can keep themselves from doing a little splurging when shopping this month? Believe it or not, studies show that we plan for all of those expenses....it's the fact that the muffler sometimes drag behinds the car or another emergency expense happens which sends the budget into a tailspin and your credit card debt soaring. To solve that problem, today we'll talk to Michele Cagan, author of Budgeting 101. You'll be happy to hear that Michele doesn't think you need to track every penny. There's a better (and easier) way to make sure you get ahead without devoting your whole life to spreadsheets and money tracking programs. Then, in our headlines segment...what would you do if you found a $7.5 million stash of someone else's cash? One lucky guy bought a storage unit on the cheap and found a life-changing amount of money hiding inside. Would you invest it, or maybe dash out of the basement and jump on the first plane to Tahiti? We all have our ideas... but this story probably isn't going to turn out how you're expecting. We'll share the rest of what happened during our headlines segment. In our second headline, Sallie Mae has a new study detailing how people pay for college. Taking a pit stop in the basement to help us make sense of how people save for college, pay for it, and then pay off loans, we'll talk to Rick Castellano from Sallie Mae. Of course, that's not all. We'll throw out the Haven Life line to Nick, who's been having some issues with his budget. What can Nick do to cut costs on his operation? And don't worry... we'll still take some time for Doug's trivia. Looking for something deeper than what we give you on the show? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter: The Stacker.

The basics of finance ain't easy...at first, but once you jump on and learn them, it's just like riding a bicycle (as mom says). Today we welcome CPA Michele Cagan, whose written a clever Infographic Guide to Personal Finance. She'll take us through a few lessons, from compounding interest to earning more money and spending less. It's a fun interview and a great way to either learn if you're just getting started OR to dust off your knowledge if you're an old finance pro. In our headlines segment, we discuss investors going crazy for stocks--which never ends well. Plus, we talk about active investing. What's the future of active investments? Is it really going to be all robots and automation? One recent piece in the popular press thinks so. We'll discuss it. Of course we'll still throw out the Haven Life line to a lucky listener. This time Bobby asks about 401k management fees. Should he pay a company .6% to manage his stash? We'll also answer a listener letter AND still have time for Doug's trivia.
