This week, I break down my weekend adventures, including a night out with my friend that left me feeling a little… embarrassed. And then I get to a crucial topic: are you a glass drinker or a plastic cup drinker? Because, let me tell you—there's a difference, and I'm all about the glass. Join me as I share my perspective, laughs, and a little weekend reflection.— Don't forget to subscribe, like, and give me my 10s in the comments! X: @LNwithSylvester

"Chloe turned to me and said I'm never going to dance on this stage again, am I? Like she knew, it was really sad," remembers Christi as she looks back on her last ALDC Annual Dance Concert. On "45 Second Solos", Chloe doesn't even get a chance to shine as she's put on medical rest due to her fracturing her foot suddenly offscreen. Of course it didn't seem that way to viewers as the cover story for her eye problem in the week prior was a foot problem as well, so now it just comes across as Christi and Chloe being a little shifty on screen, leading to accusations off screen of faking it for the camera (more on that in this week's Producer Notes).Abby gives the girls a challenge: perform a 45 second solo of "their choosing" (as in the Producer's choosing) before the actual recital this week to determine who will get a solo at Nationals. To add some drama, Abby brings in Kamryn as Chloe's replacement. Christi is still made at Abby for trying to convince the judges in a previous competition to throw out Chloe's win in favor of Kamryn, so this development doesn't sit well. And to make matters worse, multiple fights break out between the moms... they just mostly happen off camera (again, lot of stuff in the Producer's Notes this week). But Abby has a solution to ease everyone's tension... a dunk tank! Why?! Who cares!Quotes“We all have to take a moment and just apreciate the fact that Christi and Kelly have any sort of tech capabilities whatsoever. Because I have the perfect example of why I'm not qualified to do tech. When I was prepping tech for Pillow Talk, I literally electrocuted myself." (10:05-10:24 | Christi)“The dance concert is the culmination of all the hard work the kids have done all year; it's the hottest ticket in town. Gurl no it's not, because you sent us to Shady-side and we couldn't even get the gays to come! There were rhinestones! It is not the hottest ticket in town." (20:59-21:14 | Christi)“Abby says at the dance concert I will be the executioner, judge and jury... it should be judge, jury and executioner. She did it the wrong way just like she did red, white and black all over." (29:51-30:03 | Christi)“Abby turns to Sarah and calls her a dingbat for sitting in... Oh she stole my name!" We kick off this week with Hannah doing a DEEP DIVE on the dodgy Never Been Kissed - or shall we call it Never Been Nonced? Horrendous. Big Suze has written down the word Tunas. So there's loads of twists and turns. Netflix recommendation: Surviving Death. Big S tells us a story about Near Death Experiences... It's another CREEP OF THE WEEK speshy! 1) Big S narrates a story from Kirsty in Northern Ireland. We call this - The Hanging Woman. Uh oh. 2) Hannah has a VERY CREEPY story from Maylin. Including evidence of a woman wailing.... this gave us CHILLS. 3) Big S has a story from Esme in Cali - I think we're dealing with a mimic... carfeful of them rural communities GURL. 4) Hannah finishes the eppy with a story from Aoife who sadly lost her friend Lucas. Is he getting in touch? We Get Haunted So You Don't Have To - we get into TELEPATHY. And... guess what... it gets real weird. Huns, is it starting to work??? ENJOY XOXO JOIN OUR PATREON! I recorded this episode on the 4th of July, a day that symbolizes freedom — but for many of us, true freedom starts when we stop shrinking to make others comfortable. Last week, we talked about the invisible ways we try to stay lovable by making ourselves small. This week, I want to speak to the sting of being seen as your old self — even after you've done the inner work. You've changed. But what happens when the people closest to you don't see it... What you'll hear in this episode: Why it's painful when your growth isn't acknowledged What “shrink scripts” are and how they've shaped you The grief of being seen as your past self — and how to name it Reframes and mindset shifts to stay rooted in your progress Tools to protect your expansion Why your nervous system isn't sabotaging you — it's trying to protect you How to stop outsourcing your validation and declare your evolution Your next step: Close your eyes, hand on your chest, and repeat: “I've changed. I'm still changing. And I don't need permission to keep evolving.” Then ask yourself: What's one truth I'm ready to stand in — even if no one claps yet? Damon, Jordan, and Tony are curious – has access to the internet reduced the quality of art?In Season 1, we explored the desire for people to use the internet to stunt and fabricate their lives. In this episode, we take that conversation further by examining the positive and negative effects the internet has had on art. We're thrilled to welcome Durand Bernarr, Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, and artist, to our Surface Level Family. Together, we explore the impact the internet has had on perceived talent, whether the internet could benefit from a quality control department, and parts of Black Queer culture we wish had stayed private. With so many varying views on this topic, we're excited for you to join in as we dive into the final topic of the season. We know a lot, but we don't know it all, so join the conversation on social and let us know your thoughts.
Damon, Jordan, and Tony are curious – can freedom and the need for validation coexist? In Season 1, we explored authenticity and living in our truths was interrogated over and over again, and today we're going to have a conversation about how perception and validation shape us—and the freedom we find when we finally let go and “release ya wiggle.” We're thrilled to welcome Jonté Moaning true trailblazer in dance, fashion, and queer artistry.to the Surface Level family. We explore the need to perform versions of ourselves on social media, how validation plays a role in our ability to thrive, and explore the moments when we feel most free. We know a lot, but we don't know it all, so join the conversation on social and let us know your thoughts.
Damon, Jordan, and Tony are curious – how do we balance resistance and protecting our peace? In Season 1, we explored the sacrifices needed to make Black queer lives matter. Today, we ask: what does resistance look like in 2025? With political unrest, DEI rollbacks, and an election that left many Black Americans feeling isolated, how do we keep fighting without burning out? We reflect on the role of Surface Level in activism, how Black identity is shifting in politics, and the ways we're protecting our peace for the next four years. We know a lot, but we don't know it all, so join the conversation on social and let us know your thoughts.
Ever wonder what happens when a drunk drifter hits it big betting on the Eagles? Tune in to hear "Country Jeff's" wild gambling story!KiddChris presents his gift for Sara's Birthday and Sara's dad calls in to wish her happy birthday and shares some awkward stories about her teenage years. Imagine being stuck in traffic for four hours because a guy decided to hide out in the support beams of a bridge! Hear the details of the Brent Spence Bridge shutdown. You could be sitting on a gold mine? Discover which old band t-shirts are worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars. PETA wants to get rid of Punxsutawney Phil and replace the groundhog with something REALLY STUPID!
Damon, Jordan, and Tony are curious – how does loneliness effect Black Queer identity? In Season 1, we explored the disconnect we sometimes feel towards our hometowns in pursuit of our dreams. Today, we go further, centering the loneliness many Queer individuals feel for existing outside of accepted norms. We are excited to welcome Keith “Icy” Parris, beauty influencer and disability advocate, to our Surface Level family. We explore how digital platforms have created both online community and further isolation, how our own standards of personal access can contribute to isolation, and whether we have ever been the culprit in isolating others. The line between protecting your peace and exclusion is fine—where do you draw that line? We know a lot, but we don't know it all, so join the conversation on social and let us know your thoughts.
Damon, Jordan, and Tony are curious – can failed romance become friendship? In Season 1, we explored how we navigate platonic friendships. Today, we take it a step further by discussing the intersection of past romance and current friendship. We'll examine past relationships through the lens of our present partnerships. As queer people, many of our relationships overlap, and we'll explore how this affects our communication with current partners, as well as the line between trauma responses and the perception of nefarious intent. The reality is that the queer community—particularly the Black queer community—is small. So, when navigating life and love, how can we ensure we don't close ourselves off to great people simply because of how a relationship began? We know a lot, but we don't know it all, so join the conversation on social and let us know your thoughts.
I've known her as a fitness model, photographer, sorority sister, and, of course, friend. Recently, when I met Regina at an art luncheon, I caught up with her to ask what was new and FABulous in her life. She then produced a photo which lead to this podcast interview. Regina became a runner, and a very serious one. She has completed 16 in-person marathons, one virtual marathon, 30+ half marathons, and more than 100 other races—and she finished every single one—rain or shine, in sickness and in health, with or without injury. Regina Fleming holds certifications as an RRCA (Road Runners Club of America) running coach, a personal and group trainer, a behavioral specialist, and in women's fitness. Regina joins me today via Streamyard to discuss grit, transformation, #winning, and how running may help you achieve life success. Damon, Jordan, and Tony are curious – who has shaped our Queer identities? In season one, we explored our relationships with our fathers. Today, we go further by bringing our “Gay Mothers” on the show to shed light on the people who have shaped our Queer journeys. We are excited to welcome Corey Baker, Anthony Woodburne, and George Gary III to our Surface Level family. Each of us has a separate conversation with the people who have been most impactful, especially during our years of Queer discovery. It is often said that Queer people experience a second adolescence, as we spend the first one often hiding parts of who we are. These individuals were the guiding lights we needed during that stage of our lives, and our relationships with them are integral to what Surface Level is today.
Damon, Jordan & Tony are curious – when is criticism friend or foe? In season one, we discussed the environment of cancel culture. Today, we go further in examining public critique and when it is helpful—and when it is not. We are honored to welcome Lena Waithe, actor, producer, and screenwriter, to our Surface Level family. Together, we explore the societal boxes we are often defined by, the importance of cultivating community both on and off screen, how social media chatter does or does not affect the art we create, and the stories we tell. This episode is one we are truly excited to share as we begin the journey into 2025. We know a lot, but we don't know it all, so join the conversation on social and let us know your thoughts.
Damon, Jordan & Tony are curious – where do we stand on toxic masculinity? In season one, we discussed the obsession with masculinity in the queer community—chasing "trade," butching it up around straight people, and learning to embrace our femininity. Today, let's examine where we stand on toxic masculinity. We are excited to welcome Sailey Williams, creative director, photographer, and publisher, to the Surface Level family. Together, we explore the desires of "masc for masc" gays, the inclination of some queer men to distance themselves from femininity, and how both masculinity and femininity can thrive within our community. We know a lot, but we don't know it all, so join the conversation on social and let us know your thoughts.
Damon, Jordan & Tony are curious – how varied are our views on non-monogamy? We are excited to welcome you to Season 10 of Surface Level: Gurl, Grow Up, where each week we will revisit a different episode from Season 1 through the lens of growth. In this first episode, we explore the topic of romantic relationships and how our experiences with non-monogamy have evolved since recording our first season. We discuss the experiences that have led us to our current beliefs, whether relationships are stronger when open from the beginning or at a later point, and any rules we have in our individual relationships. This topic truly highlights the range of opinions among the hosts, and we are excited for you to join in on the conversation. We know a lot, but we don't know it all, so join the conversation on social and let us know your thoughts.
