Long before the Keweenaw Peninsula became a destination for hikers, bikers, and Lake Superior rock hounds, it was the stage for a national copper rush. Shortly after Michigan became a state in 1837, Geologist Douglas Houghton was sent to Copper Harbor to explore reports from Native Americans about copper in the region. By 1844, Fort Wilkins was built to be the military base helping to keep the peace as fortune-seekers came to the state's most northern port. In this episode of the Lake Superior Podcast, Walt Lindala and Frida Waara talk with Barry James, Upper Peninsula historian with the Michigan History Center, about the fascinating past—and present—of this historic state park. From the 1840s copper rush chaos to Civil War reenactments, as well as lighthouse tours and tales of shipwrecks, Fort Wilkins remains a living classroom with extensive youth programs. Join us as we explore the enduring significance of this frontier fort—and the people working to keep its stories alive.Key Takeaways:Fort Wilkins was built in the mid-19th century in Copper Harbor to maintain law and order during the copper rush. The fort served as a frontier military post, supporting mining operations and maritime navigation in one of the most remote regions of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The Copper Harbor Lighthouse and range lights were established in response to early shipwrecks, including the 1844 wreck of the John Jacob Astor, which supplied Fort Wilkins.Today, Fort Wilkins Historic State Park is part of the Keweenaw National Historical Park's heritage site network and offers youth camps, Civil War reenactments, and public education programs.Barry James and the Michigan History Center are working to expand exhibits, including a new display on how Fort Wilkins became a state park in 1923.Notable Quotes:“What it really represents is an excellent example of a mid-19th century military post as the United States was expanding westward.”“The Astor was the first wreck on Lake Superior in 1844. The military realized that their lifeline could be easily snapped.”“We also offer a living history program that's been ongoing since 1976, where we have costumed interpreters within the fort that represent the last occupation at Fort Wilkins, the summer of 1870.”“We've got 19 buildings on site, but 12 are original, dating back to the 1840s. So people can go into these buildings, look at the exhibits. We have period rooms with furniture and interpretation of the period.”“To get on the National Register of Historic Places, you really have to have something significant with the historic site, so that says enough right there.”Resources:Fort Wilkins Historic State Park: https://www.michigan.gov/mhc/museums/fwchl Michigan History Center: https://www.michigan.gov/mhcKeweenaw National Historical Park: https://www.nps.gov/keweConnect With Us:Website: https://nplsf.org/podcastFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/NationalParksOfLakeSuperiorFoundationLinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/company/national-parks-of-lake-superior-foundationSponsors:Cafe Imports: Supporting environmental sustainability in coffee-growing regions since 1993. *) Azerbaijan launches anti-terror ops in Karabakh Azerbaijan has launched "local anti-terrorist activities" in Karabakh to restore constitutional order by disarming and forcing the withdrawal of Armenian military formations after six Azerbaijani citizens were killed in separate mine blasts in the breakaway region. Baku blamed Armenian separatists for the death of the four Azerbaijani police officers and two civilians. The ex-Soviet neighbours have been locked in a decades-long dispute over the mountainous region, going to war twice in the 1990s and in 2020. *) Erdogan: Security Council no longer guarantor of international security Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said the UN Security Council no longer works to ensure global security but instead is an arena for its five permanent member states to engage in strategic confrontations. “We must build a global governance architecture that is capable of representing all origins, beliefs and cultures in the world,” he added. The effectiveness of the Security Council has been questioned in the face of recent crises, especially after Russia launched an offensive against Ukraine nearly 19 months ago. *) Canada Sikh, Muslim groups demand India cooperate with Nijjar murder probe World Sikh and other organisations have called for action after recent allegations over India's complicity in the murder of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. Nijjar, a Sikh leader in the western Canadian province of British Columbia, was shot dead on June 18 in front of a Sikh temple in Surrey. Earlier, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urged India to take the allegations seriously, a concern that Washington later echoed. *) Muslim leaders bash West at UNGA over Quran desecrations Muslim leaders addressing the United Nations have berated the West over burnings of the Quran, denouncing the acts protected as free speech as discriminatory. Quran desecration in Sweden sparked debate on religious tolerance and freedom of expression, with calls for deeper understanding of religious sensitivities and a rebalanced relationship between free speech and religious respect. "It has reached intolerable levels. Unfortunately, populist politicians in many countries continue to play with fire by encouraging such dangerous trends," Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said. *) Dinosaur 'Barry' up for auction in Paris An unusually well-preserved dinosaur skeleton, a Camptosaurus known as 'Barry' that dates from the late Jurassic period some 150 million years ago, will go under the hammer in Paris next month. The dinosaur, which was first discovered in the 1990s in the US state of Wyoming, was initially restored in 2000 by palaeontologist Barry James, from whom it got its name. Italian laboratory Zoic, which acquired Barry last year, has done further restoration work on the skeleton, which is 2.10 metres (6.9 feet) tall and 5 metres (16.4 ft ) long.

Barry James has just released a book that he co-wrote with Joe Morello all about how to count the famous "Stick Control" book from 1935. This book is the top selling drum lesson book of all time, and majority of the teachers throughout history haven't known how to properly count this book of R's and L's. Joe Morello and Barry were both students of George Lawrence Stone and they were working hard to keep Stone's lessons alive until Joe passed away in 2011. Barry carried on and took all the knowledge he gained from Stone and his time writing with Morello, and created "Counting Stick Control - The Key to Understanding Counting, and Playing the Exercises in 'Stick Control', The Classic Drum Method Book by George Lawrence Stone". Barry James was a student of George Lawrence Stone in the 1950's and is continuing on his teachings to this day by releasing two new books that he worked on with Joe Morello that are finally ready to be released! Barry's new book's are called "Counting the Exercises in Stick Control" which supplements "Stick Control" and teaches how to read it the way Stone originally intended, and the second is "Future Rudiments" which is a concept that Stone created towards the end of his life. Barry is a wealth of knowledge and is working very hard to teach the Stone method at its truest form! RemakingMoney, digital, is happening, in the UK and around the world. Right now! This is not a matter experts but is all 'our concern' because what happens next affects us all deeply - and not just our privacy and the freedoms we take for granted. Financial engineers and their extractive economics have already created a 'super league' of multi-billionaires and left the vast majority in financial insecurity, by spiriting away more than half of the fruits of our labours each year. Left alone this will only continue, getting worse. The remaking of money is our wakeup call and opportunity to reclaim and own our money system. Barry E James is a technologist, author and commentator who chairs the British Blockchain and Frontier Tech Association and has cofounded... The Humane Economics Project (which) seeks to reframe modern decision making with people and planet at the centre. Also on the show, Shane Bartling of Willis Towers Watson discusses the firm's 2020 Global Benefits Attitude Survey which showed that one in four full-time U.S. employees have seen their financial situation deteriorate this year, even though they were the lucky ones to hang onto their jobs amid the pandemic. Barry James Dyke – Guaranteed Income — For Wall Street! How the “Pirates of Manhattan” Steal From the Middle Class and Give to the RichAired Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM EST Interview with Author and Financial Advisor Barry James Dyke “Who needs conspiracy theories when you have con’s piracy facts?”— Swami BeyondanandaWith the COVID lockdown and many businesses closed, there has been more talk this year about guaranteed income – a way to counteract trickle down economics with “bubble up”, payments from the bottom that bubble up and prosper everyone on the way up.Unfortunately, the only “guaranteed income” we have right now is going to Wall Street, not Main Street. For decades, conscientious folks looking to secure a reasonably prosperous retirement have followed the dictates of Wall Street and financial advisors who have steered them to funds that have enriched already high paid executives, and impoverished middle class Americans. This week on Wiki Politiki, we will go deeper into that story … and, more importantly show you ways that YOU can guarantee your retirement income. Our guest this week, Barry Dyke, is a financial advisor and author, whose three books shed light – and enlightenment – on the endarkened spaces of retirement investing.Barry James Dyke is a best-selling author, advisor and speaker committed to telling the truth out about how Wall Street really works. Barry believes that today’s financial service and retirement planning systems continue to serve Wall Street, the government, the media, Ivy League academia and giant asset managers such as mutual funds more than the common man. Barry with his advisory firm, Castle Asset Management, LLC has made a spiritual, intellectual and professional commitment to act as an economic warrior that looks out for your best interests—not Wall Street. He is the author of “The Pirates of Manhattan”, and the sequel “The Pirates of Manhattan II: Highway to Serfdom” (or as the Swami would say, “Serf city here we come!”) and his latest book, “Guaranteed Income: A Risk-Free Guide to Retirement”, a book that unveils and documents how The Federal Reserve System, major banks and corporations such as General Motors, Verizon, AT&T, Bank of America, Boeing, Coca Cola, Bell System, TRW, Pfizer, Motorola, use life-insurance and annuity products to finance their corporate and executive retirement programs while most Americans remain-at-risk in their 401(k) programs funded with highly speculative actively-traded mutual funds. If you’re ready to shift wealth from Wall Street to Main Street, please join us this Tuesday, September 22nd, 2-3 pm PT / 5-6 pm ET.To find out more about Barry Dyke’s work, please go here: https://www.barryjamesdyke.com/Support Wiki Politiki — A Clear Voice In the “Bewilderness”If you LOVE what you hear, and appreciate the mission of Wiki Politiki, “put your money where your mouse is” … Join the “upwising” — join the conversation, and become a Wiki Politiki supporter: http://wikipolitiki.com/join-the-upwising/Make a contribution in any amount via PayPal (https://tinyurl.com/y8fe9dks) Go ahead, PATRONIZE me! Joseph Brusuelas, chief economist at RCM, says the risks of a sub-par recovery are rising as uncertainty over the outcome of the coronavirus pandemic drags on, and while he still believes that there will be a swoosh-shaped 'elongated and frustratingly slow recovery,' he says even that can't happen until the market knows how the pandemic will be resolved. In the Market Call, Barry James of the James Advantage Funds says investors need to be looking at securities in different time periods -- BC and AD, for 'before coronavirus' and 'after disease' -- and notes that the pandemic has injected a little more subjectivity into stock research right now. Also, Chuck answers a question from the audience, and Tom Lydon of ETFTrends.com makes a new fund based on a market niche that is in the news the 'ETF of the Week.'

Have you ever felt Wall Street doesn't have your best interest at heart? If so, you're not alone. In today's episode we interview best-selling author and advisor Barry James Dyke. Barry has written three books (with one more coming soon) that peel back the curtain on how Wall Street has systemically transferred the risk of investment losses' to the American consumer while keeping a majority of the profits for themselves. We discuss the hypocrisy found when major banks/financial institutions (and politicians) tell you to speculate with your hard earned dollars while they put their money in non-market correlated assets. In addition, he uses Caesars Entertainment's 2015 Bankruptcy filing as an example to highlight the incestuous relationship between Private Equity Firms, Pension Plan Managers and major Banking institutions. AV Education — Low Down on Health Horror Today’s episode of Amabookabooka is a throwback to 2017 when novelist, journalist and public health activist Marcus Low coughed up the incredible and, as it turns out, very credible dystopian health-horror novel Asylum. A high-security quarantine facility has been set up in the Karoo for people with a highly infectious lung disease known as “pulmonary nodulosis” - there is no cure. The inmates have been separated from the rest of the country - where they do nothing much but wait to die. Asylum is like an uncooked onion: raw with layers upon layers and will make you cry. It is a thought-provoking and superbly written book that will do to you what a fictional South African government did to the novel’s protagonist Barry James – hold you captive.
Todays episode is a little different, today we features Barry James Co-Founder of Beyond Rent which is an organisation which aims to support people renting to get onto the property ladder. In this episode we delve into my own experience of how I recently got on the property ladder and how I did it and some hints and tips from Barry. Barry also goes into what you can do to get closer to owning your own home/what are the current issues with legislation and market conditions. Millennials have been classed as 'generation rent' and things are not improving with current measures so its great to see people like Barry looking to impact real change.

Tom Lydon, editor of ETFTrends.com, said that investors looking for a trend play in a market dominated by headlines of and reactions to coronavirus might consider KraneShares MSCI All China Health Care Index, making a tactical play on a defensive emerging-markets sector that balances the fundamentals of China's enormous demographics with the reactions to the news. Lydon, in describing the fund, did suggest that investors only consider it as a trend-following type of investment, and suggested that buyers might want to follow short-term moving averages to set their stops. Also on the show, author Michele Cagan discusses her new primer on debts and how to get out of them, Anuj Nayar of LendingClub.com talks about a study on the reasons why men and women keep financial secrets from their partner, and Barry James of the James Advantage Funds talks stocks in the Market Call.

Barry James, chief investment officer at the James Advantage Funds, said the market is not functioning properly because companies with no earnings have been up by 20 percent this year, while, by comparison, companies with real earnings are down, a situation that creates the potential for a big downturn when the broad market wakes up to what is happening. James has been slowly raising cash and becoming more defensive in response. Also on the show, Kelley Knutson of Netspend on Americans' fluctuating incomes, Steve Lipper of the small-cap team at the Royce Funds talks the market, and David Trainer says a soon-to-launch IPO belongs in the 'Danger Zone.'
Arie Shapira, Bloomberg News Managing Editor of Equities, discusses how much popular hedge fund stocks have been hit by the market selloff. Around 50% of all enquiries about cosmetic surgery come to nothing. Trust between practitioners and consumers in this field is, basically, broken. How could blockchain help rebuild trust is a question addressed by this week’s interviewee, Richard Crawford-Small? Because when people think about cosmetic surgery, they usually think about the negatives, the extreme cases, the Michael Jacksons. They wonder whether they can trust the online reviews, the ‘before and after’ photographs - are they real patients, have they been doctored? But there’s also really important work going on, that has made a real impact on people’s lives, their self-esteem and personal emotional well-being, safe and successful procedures being carried out by practitioners at the top of their game. And in an industry worth $50bn worldwide each year. Now, new ICO Cosmecoin has devised a way to bring reviews and rewards together in a mutually-beneficial way, encouraging those who have undergone surgery to adhere to their aftercare process, not to exert themselves and posting pictures of their successes, incentivised by receipt of Cosmecoin to encourage further treatments, and encouraging reviews of their procedures – all kept transparent and immutable via blockchain. Truly a case of showcasing good practice and calling out the bad, leading to good outcomes, loyalty and rewards on all sides. Barry James here interviews Founder and CEO Richard Crawford-Small on what plans the company has – and what he’s learnt along the way.
The tables are well and truly turned as Blockchain Radio's Pierre Bourque interviews Barry James about scams, bad ICOs, red flags and what we should do about them! Also: How blockchain changes what is possible - in the digital realm and beyond. Life at the leading edge, and why we are now with blockchain where we where with internet technology 20 years ago - a game changer for us all, that's happening fast. The Wild Wild West frontier of our time and how it works. Why it's really important to understand the difference between fraud and failure. Plus the technologies that could make the most difference.

Blockchain is outgrowing Fintech and expanding into other industry sectors. Via the latest Blockchain Masterclass event Barry James catches up with Jody Cleworth, founder of Marine Transport International and talks about watershed moments in their use of blockchain, quantum computing, frictionless trade in the Brexit environment and being 'blockchain agnostic'. Jody highlights the importance of communication and interoperability, a topic picked up by Barry’s second guest, Lucie Munier, legal and business advisor at Qadre. Lucie explains Qadre’s Token Generation Event (and why it was not an ICO) which raised £70m, and where she sees the future of blockchain going; the need to communicate between different platforms, and a move away from just crypto currencies.

As the era of smart digital tokens and coins dawns and we create the Internet of value the possibilities and use cases for Blockchain continue to multiply But what of regulation? And when will regulators realise that Blockchains and the environments they enable provide not a threat but the best toolkit that any regulator could wish for? The possibility of smart regulation that could not only save billions a year and more in lost opportunities but better support innovation. See also Barry keynote as chair at 2020Fintech London.

It's unlike anything else in the industry. About Barry Dyke: via castleassetmgmt.com BARRY JAMES DYKE, President & Founder of Castle Asset Management, LLC entered the financial services business in 1982 with Prudential after working with RCA Global Communications and high tech industries. At Prudential, he was one of the rookies of the year. Soon after he then became an independent agent with New England Life, founded a pension consulting business in 1986 called Chestnut Green Benefit that excelled in the design, installation and funding of both qualified and non-qualified retirement plans. He has also designed, communicated and administered numerous health and welfare plans, and in 1990 set up the first self funded PPO plan for a Fortune 100 company for a major Boston HMO. Dyke also founded an administration firm in 1991, The Merrimac Benefit Group, Inc. Which specialized in flexible benefit and defined contribution health and welfare plans under Sections 125 and 105 of the Internal Revenue Code. He has also written about financial planning and retirement plan issues in national publications such as Pensions & Investment Age and Broker World, and in self-published newsletters. Dyke is currently working on a book that addresses the inherent problems of investing in the stock market, how deregulation and the central banking system have created the “Casino Age” which shifts additional risk onto consumers. As one of the leading agents in his field, he has worked with numerous closely held businesses, high net worth individuals and major public corporations. In 2000, Dyke founded another corporation, Castle Asset Management, LLC that is a Registered Investment Advisor. Today, he spends the majority of his time in macroeconomic financial planning for his clients to help them maximize their opportunities, expose them to the severely damaging pitfalls of traditional “accumulation theory financial planning” most often promoted by major financial institutions, their agents and the media. He also assists clients in setting up their own finance companies. An ardent student in Austrian economics, Dyke defends the market economy, private property and sound money. He celebrates the freedom and productive power of capitalism, and views government intervention as socially and economically destructive.

This will be her fourth time on my show. I love having Margaret on regularly to keep us on track (or get us back on track) with making healthy food choices. Our relationship with our body is one of our most important relationships and Margaret is an invaluable resource. Eat Naked is the genesis of years of learning, reading, seeking, and teaching about nutrition, cooking, and health. No matter your dietary preference—vegetarian or omnivore, raw or cooked, macrobiotic, traditional, or modern—eating naked will only enhance the health benefits, simplify the process, and help you look great, even without your clothes on! It’s time to enjoy “naked” foods—whole foods that are fresh and organically grown, prepared in ways that allow each food’s naturally delicious flavors to shine through. Margaret Floyd shows you how to choose the nutrient-dense foods that will make you look and feel so gorgeous, you’ll want to take it all off. Why go out to eat? Cooking at home is easy, healthy, delicious, and affordable—and with the right techniques and ingredients, preparing a home-cooked meal can be quicker than picking up take-out. The Naked Foods Cookbook, the anticipated follow-up cookbook to Margaret Floyd’s Eat Naked, shows readers how they can create whole, organic, and fresh “naked” meals that maximize the natural nutritional value of food. Unlike commercially available prepared foods and restaurant dishes, naked meals contain no harmful additives, preservatives, or empty-calorie fillers. Readers who seek to control the quality of ingredients and nutrients in their food will turn to this cookbook time and time again for affordable, naturally delicious meals they can feel good about eating and serving to others. About the author: My name is Margaret and I eat naked. That’s really all you need to know about me, but if you’re curious to know more… I love food and everything about it: growing it, cooking it, eating it, healing with it, talking about it, understanding it, relating to it. Food is such an integral part of our life. We have to eat it multiple times a day just to survive and, as one of my teachers said, “We are, at our most basic level, walking food.” True that. I had my first powerful experience with the fundamental importance of food in my mid-20s when a change to my diet resolved a chronic skin condition I’d struggled with for years. At the time I was deeply immersed in the world of social ventures and business consulting, first with the boutique consultancy Spark Strategies and then as VP Member Development with Canadian Business for Social Responsibility. Fast forward a few years and I realized my true calling was food and health, and, more specifically, using the former to achieve the latter. I became a Certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (NTP) at the Nutritional Therapy Association (a school I recommend highly if you’re considering a career in nutrition) and then drew inspiration from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition where I learned from some of the top minds in the field (personal favorites were Sally Fallon of the Weston A Price Foundation, Dr. Mark Hyman, and Julia Cameron, author of The Artist’s Way). Since then, I’ve become a Certified GAPS Practitioner, a Certified Healing Foods Specialist and also studied with the incredible Mark David at the Institute for the Psychology of Eating. I now work with clients all over North America and Europe, helping them resolve health issues, learn how to eat for their body to thrive, and heal their relationship with food. It’s juicy stuff, and so rewarding. In June 2011 my first book, Eat Naked: Unprocessed, Unpolluted and Undressed Eating for a Healthier, Sexier You, was released with New Harbinger Publications, and in May 2012 we launched its recipe follow-up, The Naked Foods Cookbook: The Whole-Foods, Healthy-Fats, Gluten-Free Guide to Losing Weight and Feeling Great, with the amazing Chef Barry James.
