I talk to Emily Luk, Co-Founder and CEO of Plenty, a wealth platform for today's modern couples. Due to career aspirations, higher education, and the rising cost of living, couples are taking longer to get married and have children. In addition, couples are also building more wealth on their own before getting married.  Plenty is based in San Francisco, California and will launch its platform by April 1, 2024. You can get on the waitlist or join now, depending on when you listen to this episode.  You can also subscribe to the Plenty newsletter and read the Plenty blog if you care about couples issues such as getting married, buying a house, starting a family, saving for college and more.  If you've enjoyed this episode, please leave a review. Episode 6: An Extended Christmas Special on Modern Couples: Art, Intimacy and the Avant-Garde at the Barbican. Discussed by Laura Lennard, Caz Murray & Vikki Kosmalska. For our last episode of the season we've indulged in a jam-packed discussion of a whole host of modern artists including Auguste Rodin, Marcel Duchamp, Virginia Woolf, Man Ray, Georgia O'Keeffe, Hannah Hoch and many many more! The Barbican's vast exhibition focuses on Modern Art and Modern Love: bringing together works by a plethora of modern artists of various sexualities, races and genders. It focuses on collaboration rather than any singular, isolated genius, and as a result it presents a rich kaleidoscope of artists and works. We delve into the amorous modern avant-garde and ponder: Who gets the credit when a couple collaborates? Who is the artist and who is the muse? How intimate is too intimate when it comes to capturing your lover in a work of art? And what would the repercussions be if you filled your instagram feed with modernist eroticism?Artworks referenced in the show below:The Two Friends, Tamara de Lempicka: https://theartstack.com/artist/tamara-de-lempicka-lempicka/two-friends-9Negro Anthology (1934), edited by Nancy Cunard: https://www.pbagalleries.com/view-auctions/catalog/id/157/lot/43603/Negro-Anthology-Made-by-Nancy-Cunard-1931-1933Doll of Alma Mahler(1918), commissioned by Oskar Kokoschka from Hermine Moos: https://www.theparisreview.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/alma-doll.jpgLee Miller with a Cast of her Torso, Man Ray: https://theartiscapegallery.com/modern-couples-art-intimacy-and-the-avant-garde-at-the-barbican-review/19-roland-penrose-lee-miller-with-a-cast-of-her-torso-downshire-hill-london-england-1940-roland-penrose-estateImages taken on Fire Island (1930s-40s), Pajama: http://www.pineshistory.org/art/paul-cadmus-jared-margaret-french-art-history/ The Embrace / I am Beautiful (1882), Auguste Rodin: http://www.musee-rodin.fr/en/collections/sculptures/i-am-beautifulThe Bride Pandora (1927), Hannah Hoch: http://faculty.washington.edu/dillon/rhethtml/satire/braut.htmlNot a Shoe (1950), Marcel Duchamp: http://www.thehistorialist.com/2014/10/1950-marcel-duchamp-says-not-shoe.htmlLet us know what you think of the exhibiton or of the episode! We had a look around the Modern Couples exhibition at the Barbican https://www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/2018/event/modern-couples-art-intimacy-and-the-avant-garde which is all about the relationship between art, avant garde and relationship models. We went round it to chat about the relationships and considered just how radical they were and what we can learn about this for ourselves. Here’s the blurb from the exhibition: “Explore modern art and modern love; Modern Couples reveals how relationships can become a playground for creativity. Featuring the biggest names in Modern Art, Modern Couples explores creative relationships, across painting, sculpture, photography, design and literature. Meet the artist couples that forged new ways of making art and of living and loving. The exhibition illuminates these creative and personal relationships, from the obsessional and fleeting to the life-long.” It’s £16 and it’s on till 27th January 2019 and if you’re interested in relationship diversity and/or avant garde art, this is for you. We did this because we are also running a workshop on 6th December 2018 at the Barbican. Buy tickets here https://www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/2018/event/modern-couples-make-your-own-relationship-rules 'Modern Couples: Make Your Own Relationship Rules' Modern Couples demonstrated how artists at the beginning of the 20th century were taking the radical approach to their work and applying (at least some of) this radicalism to their personal relationships. Justin Hancock and Meg-John Barker are here to help you explore the different kinds of relationship models seen in the show and how we might navigate them today. From monogamy, to ethical non-monogamy, to relationship anarchy, and our relationship with ourselves, this friendly and practical workshop will give you helpful tools to help you with whatever kind of relationship style might work for you. The workshop is open to anyone, regardless of previous knowledge and experience. We hope it will be lively, interactive, fun and thought-provoking.

This is a pretty fun episode to listen to because of all of the mutual "fan-girling" going on in the studio!! Ashley is away this week (she'll chat about where she is and what she's doing in a future episode!) so Julie & Kate held down the fort! They're both HUGE fans of San Diego officiant Bethel Nathan, and she's a huge fan and listener of Photospark, so it ended up being an AWESOMELY fun time!! Bethel is a wedding officiant here in San Diego (Ceremonies By Bethel), as well as a business coach (Elevate by Bethel), and just overall awesome presence here in the San Diego wedding industry! She dropped by the studio to chat with us about weddings & the modern couple. She's super inclusive and loves ALL types of weddings! Photospark definitely supports marriage equality, so we wanted to have Bethel in the studio because she's basically an expert in this area, and she gave us some awesome tips we can use when working with modern weddings! Key Takeaways: Make Your Support Clear: If you support marriage equality (and we REALLY hope you do!), make it clear on your website. Include photos of same-sex couples & testimonials from their weddings. If you haven't had the opportunity to photograph a same-sex wedding, put out a free offer on your Facebook page or Instagram & try to build your portfolio. Bethel mentions that over HALF of same-sex couples express having fear about contacting potential vendors because they aren't always sure they'll be accepted. So the more clear you can be about your support of LGBT couples, the better!! If you lose clients over this expression of support, they weren't your ideal client anyway! Don't Make Assumptions: We make assumptions ALL the time. Couples planning modern weddings are looking for a ceremony and rituals that fit THEIR unique situations. This isn't just an LGBT issue either; there are plenty of straight couples who have unique family dynamics that might make them rethink traditional wedding ceremonies. Don't assume that the bride's father will walk her down the aisle. Don't assume that there will automatically be a mother/son dance at the reception. Modern weddings are awesome in that couples don't feel the need to carry on traditions JUST for traditions' sake. They're looking for vendors who support a wide range of ideas & uniqueness. The more support & validation you can give to these couples, the better! Watch your Verbiage: This is a HUGE thing that changed when marriage equality became present. Pre-marriage equality, most of our contracts had a spot for a bride and a spot for a groom to fill out their information. Now, it's a great idea to keep the verbiage neutral so everyone feels included when filling out an inquiry form or a contract for their wedding. Small changes like this are actually HUGE in making couples planning modern weddings feel comfortable! Check your Preferred Vendors: When dealing with a modern wedding (especially for LGBT couples), it's important to know that anyone you could potentially refer to your couple will also support them and their marriage. If it's not clear on their website & marketing materials, it's important to ask them. Don't assume your favorite vendors support marriage equality & modern weddings because you might be shocked to find out they don't. Only refer your couples to vendors who have the same mindset as you and will be happy and supportive toward your couple! Modern Couples are NOT just same-sex Couples: It's important to remember that this topic isn't JUST about marriage equality for LGBT couples. Interracial couples also deal with discrimination when planning their wedding. Make sure you have imagery to show support of their union as well! And again, if you haven't shot an interracial wedding, make it a point to find a couple to photograph! Couples want to see themselves in your marketing materials. It makes them feel included & lets them know you are 100% supportive of their union. There are SOOO many more tips from Bethel in this episode, but you'll have to listen to find out what they are! We were so flattered that she was excited to join us in studio for this chat, and we hope you love everything she has to say as much as we did! Stay tuned because we KNOW Bethel will be back on Photospark to share even more knowledge about another topic soon!
