In the early 1930s, at the height of the atonal and twelve tone movement in music, the American violinist Louis Krasner commissioned a concerto from the Viennese Composer Alban Berg. Berg declined at first, saying that his idiom was not appropriate to a concerto and that he did not belong in the world of Wienawski and Vieuxtemps, two relatively obscure composers nowadays who wrote virtuoso showpieces for the violin that are very exciting but not particularly deep on a musical level. Krasner countered with the Beethoven and Brahms' violin concertos, which, frankly, is a pretty great argument! Krasner was convinced that Berg was the vessel through which 12 tone/serial music could reach, as the great writer Michael Sternberg called it, “it's expressive potential.” The 12 tone/serial technique of writing music was still controversial at the time(and it remains that way now), with many composers and performers embracing atonal music, with others, especially audiences, turning away. Berg finally accepted the commission, and despite his normal slow pace of composing, wrote the concerto in just a few months. The piece fulfilled Krasner's expectations, and more, and it has become almost a standard repertoire piece for violinists. It is in the twelve tone style, but it is also in many ways a fundamentally tonal piece, and the way that Berg passes through atonality to tonality and back again makes this concerto accessible in a way that many other atonal works are not at first hearing. Today on this Patreon and Fundraiser inspired show, we're going to go through this concerto, first by starting with a crash course in 12 tone music. Then we'll walk our way through this concerto, talking about tone rows, tonality within tone rows, Carinthian folk songs, life and death, Manon Gropius, Alma Mahler, Bach, and the memory of angels. All of this is contained inside of this remarkable piece, and we'll talk all about it, and more. Join us!

Alma Maria Mahler Gropius Werfel was a composer, socialite, and a bit unhinged. Pathological cruelty, antisemitism, vanity and a sense that the world owed Alma Maria Schindler something in token for her brilliance and beauty were some of the traits her admirers and enemies alike recognised in Alma (from theguardian.com). She was married three times to different artists and had impressionable moments with other notable men, which all led to her being a well-known femme fatale. She always wanted to be around creative geniuses and that actually led her to America where she became a cultural icon. Her life wasn't easy though. She lost multiple children and her first husband to illness. Although, that didn't stop her from thinking that it was her way or noway. So much so that she influenced and altered history in a way that has been labled, "The Alma Problem." Johanna Müller-Hermann once held a significant place as a composer and teacher in Vienna, yet has been largely forgotten over the decades since her death in 1941. Radio 3 has been working to unearth her music and story through its Forgotten Women Composers project, in collaboration with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and Dr Carola Darwin. This week, Dr Darwin and Professor Robert Evans join Donald Macleod to explore this fascinating composer and her times. Their series includes many specially recorded works by Müller-Hermann that have sat neglected in dusty archives for decades. Müller-Hermann was greatly celebrated in her own lifetime and moved in eminent musical circles. She studied with Zemlinsky, befriended Alma Mahler, and also corresponded with Arnold Schoenberg. She went on to teach at Austria's New Vienna Conservatory where students travelled from as far away as America and the UK to study with her. She became a pivotal figure in Vienna's cultural scene and her music was regularly performed and published during her lifetime. We're all capable of royally screwing up a romance, but some guys are so good at it we still talk about them 100 years after their relationships tank. In this month's battle of storytelling, Team Edward flies into Key West, Florida, to unearth the story of Carl Tanzer and his extremely unhinged relationship with a beautiful, dead Cuban tuberculosis patient half his age. Team Kimberly punches back with the mad entanglement of painter Oskar Kokoschka and his legendary muse, curvacious composer Alma Mahler…who got immortalized the wrong way. Soulful rock star Mia Borders and commanding music educator Kate Duncan, both of the podcast “Great Question with Mia and Kate,” step in as special guest judges to declare which true story submission is the winner, and all parties confess some of the most cringe crap they've ever pulled while in the throes of maladaptive love. Mia also plays out the episode, appropriately, with her breakup song for the ages, “Plastic Love."You can support this podcast here: www.patreon.com/humanfuckeryYou can find more of Mia and Kate at their podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/pt/podcast/great-question-with-mia-kate/id1618114613You can hear more of Mia's music here: https://www.miaborders.com/bioSupport the show

I'm out of town so I'm re-posting an episode from 2019 that I felt could use another go. I've been thinking a lot about this again this week. Here's This Hour's for You from September 2019: I read Brigid Schulte's article, A Woman's Greatest Enemy? A Lack of Time to Herself, and something snapped. I am not just taking time for myself, for my art, though it can feel that way. I am also taking time for all the women who can't spare an hour. By taking time for myself the way Popeye takes spinach, I can, perhaps, begin to counteract the way the Patriarchy has stolen so much time from women over the years. I don't just take an extra hour for myself, I can take one for Henry David Thoreau's mother and sister who did his laundry and made him meals while he wrote out by the pond. I don't just retreat to solitude for me and my play, I do it for Alma Mahler who might have taken some time for herself instead of tiptoeing around her husband. I take abundant time for all my friends, caught up in the mesh of childcare, who cannot take more than 15 minutes at a time to do much of anything for themselves, much less work on their art. Alma Mahler (1879-1964) was a composer, sculptor, and writer. Though she was less widely known as an artist, those who have heard her name probably know it through a famous song performed by the satirist Tom Lehrer in 1965.This month, we're talking about muses–women who were drivers of creativity and inspiration. Once again, we're proud to partner with Mercedes-Benz (whose famous namesake was inspired by a young muse named Mercedes). (Autor: Martin Zingsheim) Von Martin Zingsheim.
Oskar Kokoschka was an Austrian painter, poet, and playwright who channeled his romantic experiences into his unconventional art. First an extremely NSFW "children's poem", then his riot-causing experimental play about gender warfare, and finally a nightmarish sex doll replica of his evil ex-girlfriend, Alma Mahler! Episode Notes Join us aboard the “Spooky Train” again this week as Hannah regales us with some seriously creepy stories about dolls. You will hear about Alma Mahler, the “muse” and her many lovers. One of which was so smitten as to create a doll in her likeness… Well almost in her likeness. You will hear the twisted tale of Carl Tanzler and his unrequited love and subsequent abuse of a corpse. To add to the fun, you will hear about two men and their “real” life sex doll wives. As an added bonus, we talk about Furbies and you will learn about Hannah's wishes for the after life. As for astrology, well 9/20 will be a good day to cleanse your crystals as we welcome the Harvest Moon in Pisces. It will also be a good day as Mercury in Libra will be trine with Jupiter in Aquarius. This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
