Today is an important day. Game Informer magazine subscriptions are back! And so is the Game Informer Show podcast! We recorded our first episode earlier this week before all the Summer Game Fest announcements and before we had Switch 2s in our hands. Apologies for not talking about the absolute latest in video game news, but this first episode back was always meant to be a catch-up and a rundown of what to expect.Join Alex Van Aken, Marcus Stewart, Charles Harte, and me as we talk about bringing the magazine back, share what we did during our "time off", and share just a few of the games we've been enjoying recently.Moving forward, you can expect to hear The Game Informer Show podcast every Thursday, and next week we will have a special on-location SGF episode. Thanks for resubscribing (or never unsubscribing)! We look forward to coming back and to all your feedback.

Alongside the rest of the magazine and website, The Game Informer Show podcast took an unexpected hiatus last year. We've been hard at work getting our feet back under us, making lots of behind-the-scenes efforts on the website, and working toward bringing back the physical magazine. It's kept us busy! But ahead of the magazine officially returning, Summer Game Fest activities, and the launch of Switch 2, we wanted to make sure we had an outlet to share our conversations and have you listen in. Alex Van Aken, Marcus Stewart, Charles Harte, and I have the first episode in the can where we talk about the shutdown and how it affected us, what we've been playing, and lots more. That episode isn't available quite yet, but we wanted to make sure you know where to subscribe to the show when the first episode drops on Friday, June 6.You can find some direct links below or watch a video version of the podcast on our YouTube channel. You know, one hit wonders get a bad rap. Chumbawumba’s Tubthumping, Crazy Town’s Butterfly, Snow’s Informer, - heck even Plain White Ts’ Hey There Delilah are just a few examples off the top of my head of gimmicky little songs that were the hottest songs in music for a number of weeks or months, from bands and artists that could have been all the rage - but fizzled out of the mainstream after just a single, solitary hit. With that fizzling out often comes a sort of cultural negativity - like “oh you liked that song? Gross - They’re a total flop. And yes I know - plenty of artists have gone on to create cult-followings post their mass-appeal ‘moment-in-the-sun’, and not everyone can or even wants to be Taylor Swift; but in a way, that’s kind of my point! A hit is a hit, and most of these artists shouldn’t be written off as ones who simply didn’t have what it takes; and certainly shouldn’t be maligned musically. Not for nothing, I’m willing to bet that at almost any wedding you’ve ever been to - some of the biggest cheers of the night came when the DJ dropped the needle on a one hit wonder. And sure - you can chalk a bit of it up to a carefree mix of booze and irony, but even a guilty pleasure is one that brings joy. One such example of a ‘one hit wonder’ by an artist that truly deserves their flowers is Vanessa Carlton’s quirky 2002 piano hit ‘A Thousand Miles’; and that is exactly what we’re going to do today. This is the story of A Thousand Miles with newly unearthed audio from Vanessa Carlton herself. Written by Clayton Taylor for iHeartRadio Canada.

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 6, 2025 2:15

Sophia and Nick return for an historic episode to discuss the director with the most Oscar wins and the first to win consecutively: John Ford. Revered by many filmmakers throughout history and known for his Westerns, Ford blazed a trail that also showcased his Irish background, his actors- many of whom also won Oscars- and the fractured American Dream. They begin with a thorough history of his illustrious career before reviewing The Informer, the 1935 film for which he won his first Oscar. Even though he didn't win for Stagecoach four years later, he was successful the following year with The Grapes of Wrath (28:34). Steinbeck's classic novel created a perfect tapestry for his next directorial feat.
