In local news, The Watauga Democrat reports Grandfather Mountain is kicking off its Fall Color Ramble. These are a series of guided walks through the mountains' most colorful locations. The walks will be offered daily at 2 p.m. Oct. 2 to 10, weather permitting. The starting location will vary day to day. Participants should visit the park's entrance gate or Nature Museum upon arrival to determine the starting point for the day's walk. In state news, CBS17 reports as opioid overdoses continue to rise across the state, treatment centers are running out of room for patients. Addiction recovery centers such as Healing Transitions' Women's Campus are reaching capacity and having to turn people away. Extensions to the facility began this week. This will add 90 new beds and more restrooms and showers for occupants to use. In 2020, opioid overdoses increased 34 percent across North Carolina, according to the CDC. The new addition(s) to the facility will provide more space when it is needed most as the pandemic continues to impact the opioid crisis across the state. In national news, NPR reports The U.S. Postal Service will implement new standards for first class mail and periodicals. This will slow target delivery time by 30 percent. However, 61 percent of first class mail and 93 percent of periodicals will not be affected by these changes. Also, beginning Oct. 3 and going until Dec. 26, the Postal Service will temporarily raise prices on all “commercial and retail domestic packages” for the holiday season. All of these are changes under the Postal Service's 10-year strategic plan that was announced in March. So, if you are sending packages out this holiday season, you may want to do it sooner than later to avoid delays and extra costs. This afternoon's weather report is brought to you by Boone Weather dot com. The pleasant weather conditions are sticking around for your Friday afternoon and into the weekend. Besides a few scattered afternoon clouds, expect sunny skies for your afternoon with a high of 71 degrees and a low of 51 degrees.

In episode 41 Cecilia and Carly bring us along to a place they once both called home, Ottawa, Ontario! Join them as they take a jaunt down memory lane. Lucky for them, these streets just happen to be riddled with ghosts. Cecilia takes us to some of the capital's most haunted museums the Bytown Museum and the Nature Museum. Carly brings us to the Ottawa Jail and covers (arguably) Canada's only political assassination; that of Thomas D'Arcy McGee.
Your Audio Curators, Jas and Sher accepted an offer to go on a private ‘Haunted’ tour of the infamous ‘Man & Nature Museum’ with listener Brian Langlotz. Here Brian shows them where he has heard voices of ghost children laughing and running through the museum galleries, Mannequins moving and deceased sailors remaining on post in the afterlife on the docked Nonsuch vessel. Many odd and unexplained occurrences have been rumored to happen throughout the years in the Museum. The hauntings and shadows that are witnessed have even been captured on security footage. What is the root cause of this? Opening in July 1970 (the Planetarium previously opened in May of 1968) brought a promise for the Museum to educate and bring people together to learn, and encourage discovery for all young and old. However with the Collections, clothing and artifacts it has seemed to invite a different level of participation to the galleries. Is it the artifacts that seem to be brought to life? Were some of these donated possessions actually haunted? Or are their owners still ‘attached’ to them? Do the taxidermy animals still embody the spirits that were thought to be left behind? Why do objects move on their own and ethereal voices seem to linger in the galleries? Pianos play on their own? Dolls are heard to cry & laugh? After we hear the first hand tales on Jas & Sher’s guided tour …..you decide if The Man and Nature is haunted……Winnipeg Playwright Brian Langlotzs is no stranger to the local theatre scene. To his credit he has been a Stage Manager with multiple groups such as NKCP Dramatic Theatre and Broken Record Productions. As well as been the Stage Manager for last ten years with local Country band The Wilkinson’s. Brian has also been involved with many acting roles in television shows, multiple commercials including larger movie productions. The love of the theatre has brought Brian to his current role as President and Founder of the Parachuting Camel Productions, through which he will be debuting his first official play, ‘Letters’ at this years 2019 Winnipeg Fringe Festival. Please listen to a sampling of ‘Letters’ at the end of this episode.
