Episode #338: “[The quake] revealed the tragic disconnect between the government's understanding—or perhaps, willingness to communicate—the severity of the disaster and the actual level of risk facing the population.”In a compelling analysis, Professor Dean Kyne critiques Myanmar's disaster management, highlighting how decades of military rule have prioritized authoritarian control over public welfare. He illustrates this with the 2008 Cyclone Nargis, when the junta ignored early warnings and downplayed the storm to proceed with a constitutional referendum ... and over 138,000 people died.Kyne argues that instead of learning from this tragedy, the regime has doubled down, now weaponizing disaster response. Following the recent earthquake, search and rescue was blocked, aid was withheld, and military authorities even prevented international teams from entering. Humanitarian responder Kiran Verma, for instance, was stopped at gunpoint. “This wasn't logistical failure,” Kyne says, “it was humanitarian suppression under authoritarian rule.” He notes that corruption further undermines aid distribution: local junta-aligned leaders steal and resell aid. Worse, young male relief volunteers are reportedly being forcibly recruited, and legitimate aid workers face harassment from pro-junta paramilitaries.Kyne proposes a three-part framework for international response: pragmatic, political, and moral. He urges aid agencies to bypass the junta, work through opposition-held zones, and commit to long-term recovery. Community resilience, he emphasizes, can start with education alone—empowering locals through training and digital platforms. He closes with a message of solidarity: “To the people in Myanmar, you have to be very strong. And for the international community members, please continue with what you have been doing, and please support the affected individuals.”

A South African family has been declined residency because their son's considered a burden on New Zealand's health and special education system. Joshua Meets, whose family has lived in New Zealand for nearly 5 years, has a complex seizure disorder, developmental delay and is non-verbal - meaning he requires round-the-clock care. That's meant the family's residency application has been declined, despite the Immigration and Protection Tribunal saying it would be in Joshua's best interests for him to remain here. Luka Forman has the story.
Many families wanted to receive the “Comprehensive Waiver.” But under the new system, only three percent have been offered it. Instead, most people are offered a family support waiver, and 32% of them have declined.
In the face of what is inarguably bad governance and fake—but spectacular!—technocracy (the list goes on and on, but we'll stop at AI-generated tariffs), we thought we'd take a moment to join the conversation about what good governance looks like. A couple of weeks ago, one of us reviewed Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson's new book, Abundance, for the New York Times, and then the other one of us reviewed the review. So we figured: let's work it out on the pod? No guests on this episode, just the two of us in a brass-tacks, brass-knuckles discussion of the abundance agenda and the goals of twenty-first century economic policy. We dive right into what the abundance agenda is and who its enemies are: innovators and builders against NIMBYs and environmentalists on David's account; techno-utopians who discount the environment and politics on Sam's. We agree that housing policy, at least, has helped the better-off create a cycle of entrenching their position through stymieing construction and production. We find another point of agreement on how Klein and Thomson's abundance agenda attempts to harness the power of the state to build, and that certain left-wing critiques are off base, but disagree about whether their proposal is a break from the neoliberal era of governance and what that even was. In some ways, we end up right where we started, disagreeing about whether the abundance agenda seeks to unleash a dammed-up tide that can lift all boats, or whether the abundance agenda leaves behind everyone but a vanguard of “innovators” in the technology and finance sectors. Let us know if you've got a convincing answer. This podcast is generously supported by Themis Bar Review.Referenced ReadingsWhy Nothing Works: Who Killed Progress―and How to Bring It Back by Marc DunkelmanStuck: How the Privileged and the Propertied Broke the Engine of American Opportunity by Yoni AppelbaumOn the Housing Crisis: Land, Development, Democracy by Jerusalem DemsasOne Billion Americans: The Case for Thinking Bigger by Matthew Yglesias“Kludgeocracy: The American Way of Policy” by Steven TelesThe Rise and Fall of American Growth: The U.S. Standard of Living since the Civil War by Robert GordonThe Rise and Fall of the Neoliberal Order: America and the World in the Free Market Era by Gary GerstlePublic Citizens: The Attack on Big Government and the Remaking of American Liberalism by Paul Sabin“The State Capacity Crisis” by Nicholas Bagley and David SchleicherRed State Blues: How the Conservative Revolution Stalled in the States by Matt GrossmannThe Captured Economy: How the Powerful Enrich Themselves, Slow Down Growth, and Increase Inequality by Brink Lindsey and Steven Teles“Why has Regional Income Convergence in the U.S. Declined?” by Peter Ganong and Daniel Shoag“Exclusionary Zoning's Confused Defenders” by David Schleicher“Cost Disease Socialism: How Subsidizing Costs While Restricting Supply Drives America's Fiscal Imbalance” by Steven Teles, Samuel Hammond, and Daniel Takash”On Productivism” by Dani Rodrik

Note: I am not a malaria expert. This is my best-faith attempt at answering a question that was bothering me, but this field is a large and complex field, and I've almost certainly misunderstood something somewhere along the way. Summary While the world made incredible progress in reducing malaria cases from 2000 to 2015, the past 10 years have seen malaria cases stop declining and start rising. I investigated potential reasons behind this increase through reading the existing literature and looking at publicly available data, and I identified three key factors explaining the rise: Population Growth: Africa's population has increased by approximately 75% since 2000. This alone explains most of the increase in absolute case numbers, while cases per capita have remained relatively flat since 2015. Stagnant Funding: After rapid growth starting in 2000, funding for malaria prevention plateaued around 2010. Insecticide Resistance: Mosquitoes have become increasingly resistant [...] ---Outline:(00:25) Summary(02:06) Introduction(04:31) Ok, give me the 1 minute rundown on what malaria is and how we fight it?(05:22) Preventing malaria has historically meant distributing bednets(07:58) There's a lot of good evidence showing that bednets have been effective at preventing malaria(09:07) The percent of people with access to bednets and the percent of people sleeping under bednets have both stayed constant or increased since 2015(10:47) So what did cause the increase in malaria cases since 2015?(11:54) Factor 1: Population increase(17:35) Factor 2: Stagnant funding(23:21) Factor 3: Insecticide resistance(34:23) What are the relative contribution of these three components?(38:10) Factors that don't seem to be major contributors(38:27) The decline until 2015 and stagnation after do not represent trends in separate countries or regions(39:37) Removing PFAS from bednets doesn't appear to have affected experimental hut results(44:23) Anopheles stephensi isn't present in the areas with the highest rates of malaria yet(45:26) Nobody knows if climate change is making malaria worse(47:20) ConclusionsThe original text contained 6 footnotes which were omitted from this narration. --- First published: March 16th, 2025 Source: https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/rxTPv3MdrsHiqK7kM/money-population-and-insecticide-resistance-why-malaria --- Narrated by TYPE III AUDIO. ---Images from the article:Apple Podcasts and Spotify do not show images in the episode description. Two-division world champion Mikaela Mayer chats with Cynthia for BWBSP ahead of her highly-anticipated grudge rematch against former welterweight world champion Sandy Ryan. Mayer talks about why she decided to offer Ryan the rematch instead of unifying with Ring Champion and newly-crowned WBA welterweight world champion Lauren Price or take on rematches with Undisputed queen Alycia Baumgardner or former undisputed light welterweight queen Chantelle Cameron. Mayer reveals why Baumgardner declined the rematch offer as Mayer would move down in weight to fight her and would love to fight three-division undisputed queen, "The GWOAT," Claressa Shields, and her thoughts about Shields' positive drug test, which she has been cleared of no wrongdoing by Michigan Athletic State Commission in comparison to Baumgardener's positive drug test, which she has also been cleared of. Tune in! Mayer vs. Ryan 2 goes down, on March 22 at the Fontaine Bleu in Las Vegas and live on ESPN. Don't miss it!

Matt Cohen and John Ruffolo break down the seismic shift in Canadian politics as Mark Carney takes over as Prime Minister, succeeding Justin Trudeau. We explore what this means for Canada's economy, upcoming elections, and how business leaders are reacting to the change.* What's next for Carney and the Liberal Party?* Could Canada be heading for an April election?* How will Canada's economic policies evolve under Carney's leadership?Mark Carney Takes Over as Canada's 24th Prime Minister (00:01:00)In a widely expected move, Mark Carney won the Liberal leadership race with 86% of the vote, stepping into the role of Prime Minister. Despite having never held elected office, Carney's deep experience in global finance makes him a powerful force in Canadian politics.Carney's Background:* Former Governor of the Bank of Canada (2008-2013)* Governor of the Bank of England (2013-2020)* Economic advisor to Trudeau during COVID-19* Declined a role in Harper's Conservative governmentWhat's Next? With a tight race against Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, Carney must move quickly to define his platform beyond broad economic promises. His leadership so far has been untested in political debates, raising questions about how he will navigate policy discussions leading up to a potential election.John Ruffolo's Take:“This is not a massive shift from Trudeau's policies—it's more of a continuation. Expect more government spending and taxation debates, but the big question is: How will Carney perform under real political pressure?”Will Canada See an April Election? (00:03:00)An early election could be announced as soon as March 16, with a vote set for April 22.Key Election Dynamics:* The Liberal Party is eager to hold elections before Conservative fundraising gains momentum.* Carney currently lacks a parliamentary seat, which could impact campaign optics.* A potential coalition between the Liberals, NDP, and Greens could reshape the political landscape.Projected Outcomes:* Conservatives still favored to win—but the margin is narrowing.* A left-wing coalition could prevent a Conservative majority.* Economic issues, particularly cost of living and taxation, will dominate voter concerns.John Ruffolo's Perspective:“With Canada's economy still under pressure, the Liberals need to move fast. Their best bet is a short campaign before Pierre Poilievre gains further traction. If the Liberals delay too long, it could backfire.”Canada's Economic Crossroads: What Carney's Policies Could Mean (00:07:00)Carney has hinted at major spending initiatives, but concerns over taxation remain front and center.Top Concerns:* Rising debt: More government borrowing could impact inflation.* Carbon tax shift: The tax isn't going away—just moving from gas stations to industrial sectors.* Cost of living crisis: Canadians are struggling with affordability, and tax policy will be a major campaign issue. What's Next? Will Carney unveil a bold new economic vision, or will his policies be Trudeau's agenda rebranded? Investors, business leaders, and everyday Canadians are watching closely. The Big Picture: What This Means for CanadaWith a potential election looming, Canada stands at a political and economic crossroads. Will Carney's leadership provide stability, or will voters seek a new direction under Pierre Poilievre? This is a public episode. Subscriber-only episodeIn this episode of the Radical Health Rebel Podcast, I'm joined by Roman Bystrianyk, co-author of Dissolving Illusions: Disease, Vaccines, and The Forgotten History. We dive deep into the official mortality data from the 1800s and early 1900s to uncover the truth about what really caused the decline of deadly diseases. For decades, we've been told that vaccines were the key factor in reducing mortality from diseases like smallpox, measles, and diphtheria. But is that claim supported by historical evidence? Roman presents the actual statistics that paint a very different picture—one that mainstream narratives often ignore. Health NZ is pushing back against the claims patients in Porirua have been declined specialist appointments based on their body mass indexes. A group of Porirua GPs have claimed their patients had been rejected for general and orthopaedic surgeries based on BMI - and they fear it's a tactic to manage waiting lists. Health NZ's Chief Clinical Officer, Dr Richard Sullivan, has stepped up to deny these claims. "We're not using what we call body mass index, which is really a combination of someone's height and weight, to manage wait-lists, that's absolutely not true." Between 2000 and 2020, the number of young people incarcerated in the United States declined by an astonishing 77 percent. Red states and blue states alike lock up fewer kids than in 2000 — and in most, the drops have been precipitous: more than half of states have experienced declines of 75 percent or more. In his New York Times Magazine piece, Yale Law professor James Forman examines the reasons for the drop in incarceration and how states are responding. We talk to Forman and California experts about what the statistics can tell us about our shifting juvenile justice system and what we've learned about addressing youth crime. Guests: James Forman Jr., professor of law, Yale Law School; won the Pulitzer Prize in 2018 for his book, "Locking Up Our Own: Crime and Punishment in Black America;" his most recent piece in the New York Times Magazine is titled, "What Happened When America Emptied Its Youth Prisons" David Muhammad, executive director, National Institute for Criminal Justice Reform; former Chief Probation Officer for Alameda County Laura Abrams, professor of social welfare, UCLA's Luskin School of Public Affairs; author of "Compassionate Confinement: A Year in the Life of Unit C" and "Everyday Desistance: The Transition to Adulthood Among Formerly Incarcerated Youth" Katherine Lucero, director, Office of Youth and Community Restoration; former supervising judge in juvenile court, Santa Clara County Superior Court

We will find God's best for us when we're prepared to make sacrifices. In this sermon, Pastor Allen Jackson discusses places in Scripture where people reject a breakthrough opportunity from the Lord. He walks us through the story of the rich young ruler as well as the man born blind to demonstrate where rejection can take place, what it can look like, and how to avoid it in our own lives. America is a nation of comfort and convenience, but a journey with God will require hard work, patience, sacrifice, and spiritual awareness. This new year, let's align ourselves with what God is doing in His people. Data released to RNZ under the official information act shows six percent of special needs grants were declined in the first nine months of this year. That's compared to just 3.5 percent for the same period in 2023. The Ministry of Social Development offers the hardship grants, most are given for food, and people do not have to be on a benefit to apply. Amy Williams reports.
