Randee and her mom are very close. They have a wonderful relationship and Randee says "she's my best cheerleader."  A lot of that has to do with the honesty and open communication that they had from the very beginning-"adoption was normal, not a stigma, not a tragedy."  Also, Randee learned at a young age that just because you are blood related doesn't guarantee you a loving relationship.Lois was definitely a role model to Randee. But Randee also feels that she learned from things that Lois did and didn't t do and then would form her own opinions. Randee had the luxury of knowing that her mom "always had my back.".Unfortunately, growing up in the 70's, Randee's parents divorced and her mom went to work. She was able to get contract work, writing and editing government contracts. It was a stressful time for Lois, but she made the best of it. For example, her office didn't have a window, so she decided to put a picture of a window up on the wall. That made it feel so much better."The Only Songs We're Singing," was released April 2025 and "Leave No Trace" will be released August 2025.In “The Only Song Worth Singing”, the power of friendship is one of the major themes blended with myth and the power of music. Imagine Irish folklore combined with mysticism – makes for a magical read. She's also written Amazon Bestseller, Tune in Tomorrow and co-wrote the popular, The Law & Order: SVU Unofficial Companion and co-edited, Across the Universe: Tales of Alternative Beatles.Randee Dawn's Bio:Randee Dawn is a Brooklyn-based author and journalist focusing on speculative fiction across the categories (science-fiction, fantasy and horror) at night, while writing entertainment and lifestyle stories during the day for publications including Today.com, NBCNews.com, Variety, The Los Angeles Times and Emmy Magazine. You may have seen my name in other publications over the years, including Soap Opera Digest and The Boston Phoenix, E! Online, New Musical Express and Mojo. I contributed to a French book about American television, Les Series Tele and co-authored (with Susan Green) The Law & Order: SVU Unofficial Companion.I've got a fair amount of short fiction in anthologies, and authored the short story/poetry compilation Home for the Holidays. I'm currently  represented by Bridget Smith at JABberwocky Literary Agency, and I frequently appear at conventions and workshops on panels and to give readings. My first novel, Tune In Tomorrow, was published by Solaris/Rebellion in 2022. Arc Manor will publish my next two novels in 2025: The Only Song Worth Singing (April) and Leave No Trace (August). My degree in broadcast journalism from Boston University is occasionally useful, though I'm pleased to have a paralegal certificate from New York University.Currently, I reside with the love of my life and an adorable West Highland Terrier (who is also quite lovable). No, I don't have a fox, but if you want to meet a fox like this, JAB Canid Education and Conservation Center can help.  More information about Randee. https://creativecoachingpartners.newzenler.com/ WEBSITE: https://randeedawn.com/https://www.facebook.com/AuthorRandeeDawnhttps://bsky.app/profile/randeedawn.comhttps://www.instagram.com/randeedawn/https://www.threads.net/@randeedawnhttps://www.tiktok.com/@randee.dawnhttps://randeedawn.com/https://randeedawn.com/appearances/https://creativecoachingpartners.newzenler.com/ "Should Have Listened To My Mother" is an ongoing conversation about mothers/female role models and the roles they play in our lives. Today I want to share an adventure I'm taking with my family to an organization that I absolutely adore. Wildlife diversity and wolves in particular have a big place in my heart. From the time I was a little girl, I wanted to study wolves and contribute to wildlife conservation. As I grew up I realized that working with animals in person probably wasn't going to be viable because I am allergic to almost everything in nature – but being able to support conservation and education in this way is magical. We're going on an overnight sleepover where we get to cap off a night of movies, presentations, and observing wolves by camping out in tents just meters from the enclosures. You fall asleep to wolf howls and owl hoots, then wake up to howling, too. It's incredible!Getting to know animals, especially wild animals, as individuals makes it so much easier for us to want to protect them and make space for them in the world. The mission of the Wolf Conservation Center of NY is one of preservation and reintroduction. And they haven't missed that people need to make connections with animals and feel their importance personally in order to support the cause.I highly recommend supporting any organization that speaks to your heart. And if you also love wolves and believe that predators have a place in our country and in the web of life, check out the WCC and maybe symbolically adopt a wolf. You can visit them at nywolf.orgI would love to see wolves reclaim their place in wild spaces all over the country in my lifetime. For episode 66 we are back in the conservation lab, visiting with the one and only Joanna Phillips. For any listeners familiar with time-based media conservation, Joanna hardly needs any introduction — she was among the first generation of practitioners in this field,  and the second ever time-based media conservator at a US museum. At the Guggenheim Joanna established the first museum time-based media conservation lab. Her work has been incredibly influential in the field — she developed a series of incredibly helpful templates for documenting time-based media while at the Guggenheim that went on to be borrowed, copied, and iterated on by museums all over the globe. Joanna has always been incredibly generous in sharing her work — years ago she used to host these fantastic gatherings where TBM conservators in NYC could gather in the Guggenheim's lab to hear about the latest research that she and Deena Engel's NYU students were conducting as part of they Conservation of Computer Based Art Initiative. In our chat we hear all about these origins, and what Joanna has been up to in recent years in Düsseldorf where she has not only been leading the Düsseldorf Conservation Center, but also recently published volume co-edited with Deena Engel, with contributions from time-based media conservators, curators, registrars, and technicians from all over the globe. Focus On Wildlife Part 2. Howl for Wildlife's Call to action center. On this episode our neighbors to the south are facing a real shocker of a bill to "GUT" the Pittman-Robertson fund. The Pittman-Robertson fund was established in 1937. This piece of legislation took an existing excise tax on firearms and reallocated the proceeds to a grant fund for state wildlife agencies. It established a program of matching federal grants to the states for “wildlife restoration projects.” The Pittman-Robertson Act required states, as a condition of receiving funding, to enact laws prohibiting the “diversion” of license fees paid by hunters for any purpose other than administration of their state wildlife agency. Every state did as required. While this established a reliable funding source for state wildlife agencies, it also created an incentive for the agencies to maximize hunting license sales. Anywhere else in the world, especially up here in Canada, would dream of having something like this in place. Jonathan explained the way in which it infects and attacks the amphibian's keratin production, thus negatively affecting levels of keratin in the skin which they require to function on land. The two discussed the effect of the harsh decline on the ecosystem, and emphasized the importance of amphibian conservation, answering the important question of what we can do to help aid their protection through supporting HARCC. Another first for us! Truly honored to be guests & students at The Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem, NY. Not only home to the famous X-men mansion its also home to 50 North American wolves. Species at the center include Gray, Mexican Gray and Red wolves. We met up Maggie Howell who is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to Canis Lupus. Maggie, Executive Director, has worked at the Wolf Conservation Center since 2005, starting as the WCC's Managing Director and taking the helm as Executive Director in 2013. She continues to lead the WCC's education and advocacy initiatives and be the main voice of the WCC. The remaining staff is made up of dedicated professionals that include educators, scientists, veterinarians and volunteers. As we learned, the center has many moving parts; however, there are two main components, education and breeding. In regards to education, WCC has ambassador wolves, Zephyr, Alawa and Nikai who work directly with the public and will never be released into the wild. Don't worry, they live an amazing life in their enclosure which includes donations of filet mignon & octopus from Whole Foods. The breeding component is made up of the remaining 47 wolves and have limited contact with humans as to protect them for eventual release into the wild. Their diets are kept more wild and depend solely on donations which include road-kill and hunter drop-offs. The breeding component is absolutely fascinating and WCC along with US Fish & Wildlife have had many successful reintroductions. Surprise guest Rocio La Rosa also joined us to give insight into the spiritual side of wolves as well as their symbolism. We had an amazing experience and very much look forward to following the WCC progress and continued success in bringing back Canis Lupus and the 38 sub-species.The Wolf Conservation Center is a registered 501 (c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization and rely heavily on donations and volunteering. She continued her studies more formally at Vassar, earning a degree in biology, focusing on animal behavior. Chatting plenty of wolf basics with Celia, Maggie also explains the genetic similarities between wolves and common dogs as well as the reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone National Park. Tune in to learn all about this remarkable animal and the great things happening at the Wolf Conversation Center. This program was brought to you by Heritage Foods USA. “Wolves are a keystone species.” [7:48] “You certainly can have an alpha female.” [11:07] “Wolves are not really designed to care about people.” [24:25] —Maggie Howell on Animal Instinct
