It's a slowish news week ahead of some very busy news weeks, so of course Nilay and David start the show with a long discussion about party speakers. Eventually, they get into the news, beginning with some of the huge Apple redesigns planned for WWDC in June. For the first time in a long time, the stakes for Apple's software teams feel really high. After that, the hosts talk about Nilay's recent interview with Google CEO Sundar Pichai, and what the AI-ification of everything means for the future of the web. Finally, in the lightning round, it's time for another Brendan Carr is a Dummy, plus some talk about the Nintendo Switch 2, a bit of confusing tariff news, and more. With Michail out, and definitely not living a jetset life, Jen, Eric, Adam, and Phil huddle around the WWDC campfire to tell tales of Game Center. There's a big change to Battlefield that threatens the franchise, while Delta Force rises as a threat to the East. Split Gate 2? Not so much. Jen defends Apple, marketing, and transmedia, all in one, while Adam claims a Marvel Rival bet and claps for the French. Eric certainly isn't clapping for Game Pass and Doom, while Phil tries to Grow a Garden.02:19 Rumors and Updates in the Gaming Industry03:13 AI Kick-Off07:32 TV Campaigns and Marketing Strategies10:45 Off the Record Event and Industry Networking16:54 Apple's 30% Fee and Game Center 2.025:10 Ubisoft's Legal Troubles and Workplace Culture27:10 Jade Raymond's Career Moves28:26 Breaking News: EA Shuts Down Black Panther Game31:19 Expedition 33: A Small Team's Big Success33:24 Doom the Dark Age: Game Pass Impact34:57 Game Pass Debate: Success or Failure?43:18 Splitgate 2: Struggling to Gain Traction46:26 Fortnite iOS Relaunch: Lukewarm?51:40 Battlefield 659:44 Roblox's Grow a Garden

Is the biggest obstacle towards wider AI adoption in game development coming from gamers?
Escuchar audio

In this episode I speak with award-winning game designer Frank Lantz about the beauty of games and what we can learn from them. It goes without saying that games are an integral part of life and our personal development, but what is it that draws us to playing? And what role does playing games serve in society at large? Frank has designed a host of amazing games and was the director of NYU's Game Center for 15 years. Together, we dive deep on the philosophical side of games. For more information on this topic, check out Frank's new book, The Beauty of Games! My guest today is a game designer and Founding Chair of New York University's Game Center. An influential writer, speaker, and thinker on video games he has taught generations of emerging young designers. The New York Times once described him as the “reigning genius of the mysteries of games.”My guest's experience is not merely academic, however: in 2005 he co-founded area/code, the studio which subsequently released one of the best regarded puzzle games yet made: Drop7. Most recently, he joined forces with his son, who is also a game designer, and together released Babble Royale, a free-to-play battle royale influenced by the boardgame Scrabble. “Making games combines everything that's hard about building a bridge with everything that's hard about composing an opera,” he once said. “Games are operas made out of bridges.” Welcome, Frank Lantz. My name is Jacob Mauriello, I am a radio host for my college and I went over the upcoming games for women basketball and mens basketball. I gave a complete breakdown of what happen to the Philadelphia Eagles last Sunday against Tom Brady and the Buccaneers. I felt like Jalen Hurts didn't have a great game because of not having a solid foundation of being that dominate quarterback. I explained what I thought of Howie Roseman's comments about his struggling wide receiver, Jalen Reagor. For the Philadelphia Flyers I broke down why Scott Laugton and Travis Sanheim should remain and have bigger roles on the top two lines. I broke down when they played against the Sharks, Boston, Rangers and the two nights they played against the New York Islanders. #sixers67 #flyers68

This week we speak with Gabe Groenendaal. Gabe is a recent graduate from one of the most prestigious gaming programs in the world, The Game Center at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. A Game Design major, he let's light in on magic as he discusses the program and his broader thinking on the future of the gaming industry. We talk about the opportunities for brands to partner in the very earliest of stages with developers, and how brands should think more like a game designer, and less like a business when it comes to reaching gamers. In the beginning, nobody knew how to use an iPhone . That informed everything about the device's design: The green felt in Game Center communicated fun and gambling, the messily ripped paper at the top of the Notes app made clear that this was where you scribbled away. The music app was called iPod, not Music, because Apple deemed that more easily understood. Using an iPhone was like bowling with bumpers—no one told you exactly what to do, but you couldn't screw up too badly either.
In the early days of the iPhone App Store, game developers found themselves locked in a race to a $0.99 price point that none of them wanted to become standard. This is the story of how that happened, and how it affected mobile games going forward. Featuring interviews with http://pocketgamer.co.uk (Pocket Gamer) and http://pocketgamer.biz (Pocket Gamer.biz) co-founder Jon Jordan and Brian Greenstone, the main man behind Enigmo and Airwings developer http://pangeasoft.net/ (Pangea Software) — the most successful early iPhone game developer and one of only two companies to have five apps simultaneously in the top 10 best-selling paid apps chart.
