Nick Olson was nominated as a Beck's Player with Heart for his commitment and passion on and off the field and mat. What he loves most about high school sports is the relationships that he creates through competing as well as the influence he has made on underclassmen by setting examples. Nick is currently involved in baseball, football and wrestling. Outside of school and sports Nick participates in church youth group, Community Farmers Markets, and is a Vacation Bible School leader. When Nick thinks about agriculture, he believes it is much broader than just large machinery and fields of crops. The farm he grew up on produces not only crops, but also maple syrup, grass-fed beef, and pasture-raised chickens. To Nick, agriculture is about providing a wide variety of food and raw materials that sustain his community. From syrup and honey to high-quality meats and eggs, agriculture plays a vital role in feeding the world and supporting local economies. Nick plans on joining the United States Air Force, and then possibly going to the academy.  In this episode of Climbing The Pocket Network’s Quick Shots I interview Nick Olson of the Pocket Protectors Podcast about Kirk Cousins’ top 10 throws of 2019. We count them down from number 10 all the way to number 1. Nick describes what is happening in each of these throws, and how difficult they actually are. To me they are nothing but an absolute thing of beauty. The question is can we expect more of the same in 2020? Yes, we know that Stefon Diggs has left the team, and only Adam Thielen remains as an established wide receiver, but we did add Justin Jefferson in the draft with his gaudy numbers last year in college hopefully translates to much of the same in the NFL. Kirk took a big step forward in 2019, and some of these throws in big pressure games show it. With Gary Kubiak returning, and this being the second season of basically his offense, do you expect Cousins success to continue?  Nick goes on to tell us about things he has coming in the future with works on Justin Jefferson, Cameron Dantzler, Jeff Gladney, Ezra Cleveland, and even deep dive into probably the most underrated player in the NFL, Anthony Harris. To start the episode, Eric helps us to under the “drastic” or “extreme” response to COVID-19 in North America. Eric helps us to understand that the multiplicative nature of COVID-19’s infectiousness poses a great danger to the healthcare system. By practicing social distancing and improving cleanliness, we can flatten the curve which gives healthcare systems the ability to effectively treat people as needed Next up, Nick challenges the conventional wisdom that the Vikings should address their worst starters in the opening rounds of the draft. While Pat Elflein and Shamar Stephen are among the worst starters at their respective positions, getting better at cornerback, especially after Xavier Rhodes was released, and wide receiver will likely net us more wins overall. After brief recaps of our Christmas celebrations which included time with family and unicorn onesies, Yinka jumped in to discuss where things went wrong against Green Bay. This conversation led us down the road of all the ways the Vikings offensive staff have been masking the deficiencies of our offensive line and Kirk Cousins season to date. Yinka mentioned that Dalvin Cook is the focal point of the Vikings offense which Jayson pushed back on give the importance of the QB position in relation to the RB position and using SIS Total Points season to date to make the argument about Kirk's value being so much higher than Cook's. Yinka clarified that even though Minnesota is built to be a passing offense, Zimmer seems to prefer an offense whose focus is on the ground game. Jayson recapped Nick Olson's argument for Kirk to be in the MVP conversation before we discussed how the sentiment of the fanbase seems to have turned on Cousins. Nick Olson and his wife, Joan, own Prairie Drifter Farm in Litchfield, Minnesota – out on the edge of the prairie. They raise about six acres of vegetables 90 minutes west of the Twin Cities, selling most of them through a CSA and the rest to stores and restaurants. Nick has also coordinated the Farm Beginnings courses for the Land Stewardship Project for a number of years. We talked about how his experience with that program influenced the decisions that he and Joan have made on their farm over the past six years, covering topics from holistic management to relationship management. I had a lot of fun talking to Nick, and I learned a lot. I think you’ll find the conversation as valuable as I did.
