As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ in Germany during the rise of Adolf Hitler and Nazi power, 16-year-old Helmuth Hübener faithfully passed the sacrament and served in his branch by day and led a teenage, Nazi-resistance by night. “Truth & Conviction,” directed and co-written by Matt Whitaker, will capture one of the most powerful stories to come out of WWII. Together, the talented producer, director and screenwriter Matt Whitaker and Still Rowing host Kim Stratford Gale discuss Matt's inspired resolve and sacrifice to share Helmuth's story and its application for us today. With courage and wisdom well beyond his years, the lessons we learn from Helmuth transcend our current divisive and contentious world. He stood for truth and with Jesus Christ until the end. Long live the . . . King?? This week's episode includes weird factoids about Queen Elizabeth II, murderous(?) queens, and debate whether or not young people are allowed to have opinions (spoiler they totes can.) First, Kelley tells the story of Lepa Radic, a teenage Nazi Resistance fighter who was one of many young people to defy the Nazis and paid with her life. Then, Emily shares the story of Queen Cynethryth, a pagan princess who was set adrift for not converting to Christianity, but became more powerful than anyone could imagine. Grab your corgis and try not to get too depressed about how they're living a better life than any of us could imagine, because we're wining about herstory! Support the show

Scholl was a key member of the White Rose, a student resistance group in Munich, and remains one of Germany's great dissenting heroes of the World War II. - Sophie Scholl würde am kommenden Sonntag ihren 100. Geburtstag feiern.
Nazi Germany - anti-Nazi resistance
In the 1930s, German civil servant Friedrich Kellner was outraged by the increasing brutality of the Nazi party and the complicity of his fellow citizens. He began to keep a secret diary to record the crimes of the Third Reich and his condemnations of his countrymen. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast, we'll tell the story of Friedrich's diary and his outspoken warnings to future generations. We'll also ponder the problem with tardigrades and puzzle over a seemingly foolish choice. Intro: In 1983, Kenneth Gardner patented a way to cremate corpses using solar energy. On May 21, the feast day of Blessed Franz Jagerstatter, Fr. McCarthy joins us to tell us his thoughts on the film "A Hidden Life" (2019). Did the film portray the "real" Franz? Why can Franz be considered, not just a prophet of the Church, but a prophet to the Church? And why is his feast day on the day of his baptism instead of the day of his death? Find Fr. Ummm.... more Nazis this week. Not EXACTLY a normal holiday choice, but what's normal on Timesuck? Today we look at the Warsaw Ghetto - the largest concentration of European Jews was in Poland, and more Polish Jews lived in Warsaw than in any other city - forced to live in a "ghetto," a walled off city-within-a-city. And the Warsaw ghetto residents were treated horribly. They were shot, starved, and forced to live in squalor. They were taken by train to death camps. And they also fought back in the best example of Jewish resistance in WW2 history. Lot of sadness but also some inspiration in today's brave tale. Happy Holidays, everyone!
