In his astonishingly frank Sonnet 133 William Shakespeare attempts to come to terms with the fact that his young lover is also having an affair with his mistress. The sonnet in one fell swoop answers two principal questions: first, what 'black deeds' of his Dark Lady's he may be referring to in the closing couplet of Sonnet 131, and second, who the woman might be that appears in the crisis which besets his relationship with the young man between Sonnets 33 and 42. And while there is of course no external, cast-iron proof that these sonnets do constellate to form a coherent picture, Sonnet 133 is in fact only the first of several sonnets to strongly suggest they do. What it leaves no doubt about, and what subsequent sonnets will make even more explicitly clear, is that William Shakespeare is for the second time in the collection talking about a relationship that has turned triangular.

fWotD Episode 2937: Cher Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Tuesday, 20 May 2025, is Cher.Cher ( SHAIR; born Cheryl Sarkisian; May 20, 1946) is an American singer, actress and television star. Dubbed the "Goddess of Pop", she is known for her androgynous contralto voice, bold visual presentation and multifaceted career, while cultivating a screen persona that mirrors her public image by often portraying strong-willed and outspoken women. An influential figure in popular culture, her continual reinvention has fueled multiple comebacks over a career spanning more than six decades.Cher gained fame in 1965 as part of the folk rock duo Sonny & Cher, early exponents of 1960s counterculture, while also scoring solo top-ten singles such as "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)". In the 1970s, she topped the US Billboard Hot 100 with narrative pop songs "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves", "Half-Breed" and "Dark Lady". After focusing on acting, she reemerged in a hair metal style with the albums Cher (1987), Heart of Stone (1989) and Love Hurts (1991), producing international number-one singles "If I Could Turn Back Time" and "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)". At 52, she reached a commercial peak with the dance-pop album Believe (1998), which introduced the "Cher effect"—a stylized use of Auto-Tune to distort vocals. The title track became 1999's number-one song in the US and the UK's best-selling single by a female artist. In the 21st century, she released her highest-charting US Billboard 200 albums, Closer to the Truth (2013) and Dancing Queen (2018), both of which debuted at number three.Cher became a TV star in the 1970s with The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour and her solo show Cher, both on CBS, attracting over 30 million weekly viewers. She gained critical acclaim after debuting on Broadway and starring in the film adaptation of Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean (1982). Transitioning to film, she earned two Academy Award nominations—for Silkwood (1983) and Moonstruck (1987), winning the Oscar for Best Actress for the latter—and received the Cannes Film Festival's Best Actress Award for Mask (1985). Other starring roles include The Witches of Eastwick (1987), Mermaids (1990), If These Walls Could Talk (1996, her directorial debut), Tea with Mussolini (1999), Burlesque (2010) and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018). Her life and career inspired the 2018 jukebox musical The Cher Show.Cher is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with estimated global sales of over 100 million records. She is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and the only solo artist with number-one singles on the US Billboard charts in seven consecutive decades (1960s–2020s). Her accolades include an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, three Golden Globes, the Billboard Icon Award and the Kennedy Center Honors. Her 2002–2005 Living Proof: The Farewell Tour was the highest-grossing concert tour by a female artist at the time, earning $250 million—about $402 million in 2025. Beyond music and acting, Cher is known for her progressive politics and advocacy for causes including LGBTQ rights and HIV/AIDS awareness. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:18 UTC on Tuesday, 20 May 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Cher on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Kendra.

Did his marriage to farmer's daughter, Anne Hathaway (no, not that one) inspire his work? To hell if we know! Elizabethan gossip columnists SUCKED at archiving the juicy details. Alas, we are left to piece together the scant intel available to imagine what their marriage was like. Join us as we dive into the historical and fictional depictions of their relationship based on their unconventional age gap, hearsay rumors, Shakespeare's bizarre will, cryptic epitaph and more. The two sequences, the “beautiful youth” sonnets (1-126) and the Dark Lady sonnets (127-52), are so distinctive, so unlike the standard Courtly Love formulas, that it is natural to wonder if they are based on real life, but there is no proof. The enigmatic Dedication to the sonnets only confuses the issue. The beautiful youth is a young male, and in the opening sonnets, the poet urges him to perpetuate his beauty by breeding. Later, the poet promises another form of immortality, in his verse. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/michael-dolzani/support

Join Mary McMyne, author of "The Book of Gothel" (a retelling of Rapunzel from the witch's point of view), and Andrew as they discuss why fairy tales often fail to give voice to outsiders like witches. Mary's fascination with retelling stories from marginalized perspectives led her down a creative and scholarly path to discover the origin story of Rapunzel's mother, or as the Brothers Grimm tale calls her the "witch." Mary delves into her creative inspiration and how she was able to hear and write down the voice of her protagonist, Haelewise. For Mary, the magical tower of Gothel and its powerful female community is not a space of entrapment, like so many believe it is, but rather a space of empowerment. Mary reveals why she portrayed the tower as a refuge for outsiders which subverts its original symbolism in the Brothers Grimm "Rapunzel." After discussing "The Book of Gothel," Mary previews her new novel "A Rose By Any Other Name" which centers on Shakespeare's Dark Lady and aims to challenge the misogyny present in these sonnets by giving her a voice. Kelsey Dionne is a new and old-school TTRPG designer who founded The Arcane Library in 2017. Her modernized take on OSR gaming, Shadowdark RPG, funded for $1.3 million on Kickstarter in March 2023. I couldn't believe when I saw Kelsey at Gen Con, just walking through the Exhibitor's Hall like the rest of us mortals! And when I talked to her she knew who I was and about my work. She is incredible, really. One of the kindest people I've meet, and even though she is now a Dark Lady of the hobby, she keeps doing good! Since the meteor that was Shadowdark hit me earlier this year with its slick rules, real time mechanics, cool AF art (including art from the incredible Brazilian artist, Yuri Perkowski Domingos), tons of tables to help you keep the game going, I have been learning more and more about Kelsey's work, following the development of the game, and its vibrant and welcoming community. I hope the Shadowdarkers out there know they have a treasure at their hands! We obviously talked about Kelsey's masterpiece, its influences, the weirdest and coolest things in it, about her journey through games, how she explores different kind of games and learn from each of them, how she approaches her work, her routines, and so on. But we talked about things beyond Shadowdark, of course. We talked about being weird, how it was then and how it is now. How her life completely changed this year after the Kickstarter. We talk about love, relationship and we even give relationship advice (we can, we are people too!). We talk about music, art, artists, nightmares, horror, ghosts, aliens, spirituality, how atheists and theists have quite a lot in common, and a lot more. And after all that, almost 2 hours of great talk, we say good bye with the impression that only 45 minutes passed. I loved it! Check out Kelsey's Links! In the ‘70s it was easy to have an identity crisis. Would you have said I'm a train, a piano man, or a dancing machine? Perhaps you remember doing the jungle boogie with the dark lady after midnight at the oasis? She said, “Come and get your love”.  Oh my my, that night I truly got hooked on a feeling, although I felt guilty, because I confess she was an outside woman and so very young. I ultimately sought penance in the Lord's Prayer. Alas, we could reminisce about things all day, but the show must go on. This week we boogie down to the Billboard Top 40 from the Week of April 20st, 1974. Will it be the best thing that ever happened to me? Probably not, but I'm willing to otherwise let it ride. Warren talks about what went into creating his most popular videos, like Barbra Streisand's “Don't Rain On My Parade,” Barry Manilow's “Copacabana,” Cher's “Dark Lady” and Madonna's MTV Awards performance of “Vogue.” He also talks about the amount of time and effort that goes into creating his videos, how he shoots everything on his iPhone, finding treasures on Ebay, thrift stores and cake decorating shops, why G.I. Joe got smaller and what “flocking” means in doll lingo. Warren also talks about how his late mother's love of musicals inspires his current work and how creating the videos keeps her spirit alive. Other topics include: getting reactions from people who are in the videos he pays tribute to like Julie Brown and Donna McKechnie, his dream of having his videos played in gay bars, creating his own mini-me doll, his dream of laying his hands on a 12” Judy Garland doll and how getting sober a few years back has made his current creative renaissance possible. www.warrencito.com

Rosalind Franklin was an English chemist and X-ray crystallographer whose work was central to the understanding of the molecular structures of DNA, RNA, viruses, coal, and graphite. She was also a fiercely intelligent, kick arse feminist with a wicked sense of humour, who was not about to soften herself to be more palatable for anyone and for that, we looooove her. However, as a woman in science during the 1950'd she experienced significant sexism and her contributions to the discovery of the structure of DNA were not recognised during her lifetime.
