Over two days in 1980, prisoners at a New Mexico penitentiary, angry at the conditions they experienced inside its walls, rose up against their jailers and wreaked havoc upon officers and inmates alike.  It would be called the bloodiest prison riot in U.S. history.  Over thirty-six hours, thirty-three prisoners were killed, eight guards were brutally assaulted, and hundreds were injured.  The prison would never completely recover from the unprecedented violence that took place. In the years since, the Penitentiary of New Mexico, known as the Old Main Prison, has gained a reputation as one of the most haunted places in the state. After hearing the true story I'm about to tell you, you'll understand why these traumatized spirits may still be lurking. In the 1980s, the prison system in the western United States underwent significant transformations, marked by a substantial increase in incarceration rates, shifts in sentencing policies, and growing concerns over prison conditions. Rising Incarceration Rates Throughout the 1980s, the United States experienced a dramatic rise in incarceration rates, a trend mirrored in western states. This surge was influenced by several factors, including the implementation of mandatory sentencing laws, the "war on drugs," and a general shift towards more punitive criminal justice policies. For instance, between 1980 and 1996, the federal prison population increased by 333%, from 24,363 inmates to 105,544 inmates ( JSTOR Sentencing Reforms In response to escalating crime rates and public demand for tougher penalties, many western states enacted sentencing reforms. California, for example, initiated an ambitious and expensive prison construction program to accommodate the growing number of inmates resulting from these policies ( Office of Justice Programs These reforms often led to longer sentences and reduced opportunities for parole, contributing to prison overcrowding.   Prison Conditions and Overcrowding The rapid increase in the prison population strained existing facilities, leading to overcrowding and deteriorating conditions. By 1980, many prisons were operating at or above capacity, prompting concerns about inmate treatment and human rights ( Bureau of Justice Statistics Notably, the 1980 New Mexico State Penitentiary riot, one of the most violent in U.S. history, highlighted the dire consequences of overcrowded and understaffed prisons ( National Institute of Corrections Emergence of Supermax Prisons In the late 1980s, the rise of supermax (super-maximum security) prisons began, designed to house the most dangerous and disruptive inmates in solitary confinement for extended periods. This trend reflected a shift towards more punitive measures within the prison system ( Oxford Academic Impact on Minority Communities The 1980s' incarceration policies disproportionately affected minority communities, particularly African Americans and Hispanics, exacerbating existing social inequalities. This disparity laid the groundwork for future discussions on systemic racism within the criminal justice system ( Vera In summary, the 1980s were a pivotal decade for the prison system in the western U.S., characterized by increased incarceration rates, stringent sentencing reforms, challenges in prison conditions, and a growing awareness of racial disparities. These developments have had lasting impacts on the criminal justice landscape in the United States.

At around 10:30 pm on February 1st, 1980, some of the prisoners in the medium security dormitory E-2 at New Mexico State Penitentiary (aka "Old Main), mostly cell-block 5 guys (men who'd been transferred into the dorm style room from maximum security single cells), were drinking hooch and decided they were going to take down the guards when they came in for bed checks, and that they did. What ensued was 36 hours of horrific deadly rioting. Hostages, torture, fire and inches of fluids everywhere. This is the most brutal prison riot to date in the US. On February 3rd, 1980, the riot at the New Mexico State Pen carried on into its second full day. Negotiations continued, but with a handful of prison guards still captive, the inmates were holding most of the leverage.Eventually, a peace would be brokered and order would be restored to the penitentiary. The facility itself, though, was in total disarray, and the expensive cleanup effort that followed would prove costly (not only financially, but emotionally). In the months and years that followed, the story would continue to plague the region. After-effects of the riot would be felt for years to come, and many still question certain aspects of it... Part three of three Written, hosted, and produced by Micheal WhelanLearn more about this podcast at unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast and others, consider heading to patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron Music CreditsGraham Bole - "Lurking"Blue Dot Sessions - "Arbinac"Percival Pembroke - "Op. 10 Sigma Variations (Excerpt)"ROZKOL - "If These"ROZKOL - "Palaver"Borrtex - "The Undertake"Rotten Bliss - "Lighthouse"Rest You Sleeping Giant - "Moss"Other music written and composed by Ailsa Traves

In the early morning hours of February 2nd, 1980, a dozen inmates at New Mexico's State Penitentiary took four prison guards hostage. Within an hour, more than ten guards would be taken captive, and hundreds of inmates were freed from their cells. The facility, which had been made aware of the dangers in the months preceding the riot, had done little to prepare for it. The rioting inmates made easy work of the lax security protocols meant to keep them at-bay, and - within hours - had free rein of the entire prison. What would follow would be hours of bloodshed... the likes of which were nearly-unparalleled in American history. As prison officials and law enforcement struggled to gain control of the situation, they quickly learned that they had underestimated the unadulterated rage that had been festering for years... Part two of three Written, hosted, and produced by Micheal WhelanLearn more about this podcast at unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast and others, consider heading to patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron Music CreditsXenojam - "Chtonic"ROZKOL - "Hell Slime"How the Night Came - "IV - C6H807"Blue Dot Sessions - "Thread of Clouds"Parvus Decree - "Hive Mind"ROZKOL - "The Institute Laboratories"Kai Engel - "Silence"Other music written and composed by Ailsa Traves and Monty Buckles

Throughout the 20th century, the New Mexico State Penitentiary earned a reputation of being, ironically, a lawless place - where violent and non-violent prisoners were forced to co-exist in cramped and deplorable conditions.Violence was constant, and certain cell blocks were allowed to run rampant over others. To make matters even worse, the prison's revolving door of wardens through the 1970's kept implementing changes, but just ended up creating vacuums... which were only ever filled with apathy and disorder. This eventually reached a head in the final days of 1979, when rumors of a vicious uprising began spreading through the facility. Prison officials thought nothing of it at the time, but in the early morning hours of February 2nd, 1980... the powder keg could no longer be contained.Part one of three Written, hosted, and produced by Micheal WhelanLearn more about this podcast at unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast and others, consider heading to patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron Music CreditsOKAM vs ps - "Understanding the Limits of Symbiotic Echolocation"Parvus Decree - "First Encounter"Murmurous - "Fathom"Other music written and composed by Ailsa Traves
