In 1964, Wendell Arthur Garrity was United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts – not yet a judge on the District Court of Massachusetts. Ruth Batson was a frustrated parent and civil rights activist – not yet director of Boston's Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity, or Metco, the voluntary desegregation program. Louise Day Hicks was a member of Boston's School Board – not yet the leader of ROAR: Restore Our Alienated Rights – and the face of white opposition to the integration of Boston Public Schools. Ten years later, they would all be major players in the battle to desegregate Boston Public Schools. As the city marks 50 years since Judge Garrity's ruling on busing, we consider the importance of the period before busing – a time expert Zebulon Miletsky refers to as Boston's ‘true civil rights movement.'

A Note from James:For 20 years, I've been writing about how much I think people should not go to college, and that college is not the only solution for a career. It could be the worst solution because  tuition has risen faster than inflation every single year for the past 50 years. And why is that? Because student loans are a big scam and the government backs them, college presidents always know they're getting their money. They keep raising tuition even faster than society is raising the prices of anything else. James Keyes, former CEO of multibillion-dollar company 7-Eleven, has been CEO of many companies, including Blockbuster, and he wrote a book about the importance of education: Education is Freedom: The Future Is in Your Hands. So guess what? We decided to debate. And I'll admit I'm the sort of person who tends to agree with whoever the last person I speak to is, but he presented some very good arguments and I have to, I have to give them all credit for that. But I'll let you hear the conversation and it's well worth listening to, particularly if you've been wondering about this issue. So, here he is.  Let's talk about college.Episode Description:James and corporate leader Jim Keyes debate the relevance of a college education for career success, attributing rising tuition costs and impractical skill sets to modern colleges' downsides. The importance of degrees as a differentiator in the job market is emphasized, with the debate also covering emerging alternatives such as Google certificates. The two later shift to discuss learning and education in the context of business evolution, specifically detailing challenges faced by 7-Eleven in maintaining "freshness" and the role of technology in overcoming these. Episode Summary:00:00 The Value of College Education: A Conversation with James Keyes01:45 The Business of Convenience: The 7-Eleven Story04:52 The Evolution of Blockbuster and the Future of Streaming07:03 The Impact of Technology on Global Education08:42 The Importance of Learning and the Role of College08:50 The Debate: Is College Worth It?09:46 The Role of College in Career Advancement13:52 The Future of Education and the Global Economy21:47 The Power of Self-Investment and the Value of a Degree24:07 The Practical Reality of College Education29:16 The Entrepreneurial Path vs. College Education36:22 The Impact of Self-Doubt and the Confidence from Education37:51 The Role of Society in Learning38:18 The Importance of Discipline in Self-Learning38:45 The Social Aspect of Education39:02 The Value of Collaboration in Learning39:32 The Impact of Real-World Experience on Learning40:12 The Comparison Between Formal Education and Self-Learning41:31 The Role of Professors in Learning42:05 The Power of Self-Learning42:52 The Debate on College Degree vs Google Certificate46:11 The Importance of Broad Education49:14 The Future of Education01:02:25 The Impact of Fear on Learning01:08:23 The Future of Economy01:15:31 The Importance of Freshness in Business01:17:15 The Power of Knowledge ------------What do YOU think of the show? This week, the Texas Legislature adjourned the third special session, and almost immediately, the Governor called them back for a fourth 30-day special session focused on public education-specifically trying to divert public dollars to private schools and immigration-related bills.   Thursday, two House Committees met to hear bills, and the Texas Impact team stayed up late to testify and cover the hearings. On the other side of the building, the Senate operated at warp speed, passing four bills out of committee with little to no public input and off the floor in a matter of hours.   This morning, the House Select Committee on Educational Opportunity and Enrichment met to approve HB 1, the voucher bill and two of the Senate bills concerning border security and funding for a border wall were rushed out of House committees.   Texas Impact's Executive Director and Advocacy Director, Bee Moorhead and Josh Houston, are here to help us center ourselves in these– not unprecedented but unique times.

In this episode of the Admittedly Podcast, hosted by Thomas Caleel, listeners are guided through the nuances of the University of California application process. With the November 30 deadline looming, Thomas takes a moment to commend his audience for successfully navigating the early decision/early action deadlines, only to now embark on a fresh challenge—applying to the University of California system. Key Points: The Unique UC Application: Thomas emphasizes that the UC application is distinct from the Common App, pointing out some of the crucial differences. Notably, there are no recommendation letters required, and UCs do not consider SAT or ACT scores, which can either relieve or concern applicants. The All-Encompassing UC App: Applicants are reminded that they are applying to multiple UC schools simultaneously through one application. The choice of schools, majors, and secondary majors is an important step within the application. The UC Personal Insight Questions: Thomas introduces the eight UC personal insight questions and emphasizes the significance of strategizing before selecting which ones to answer. It's crucial to showcase who you are as a candidate rather than targeting specific schools. Understanding the UC Personal Insight Questions: Thomas breaks down the different prompts. He discusses "Leadership" and "Creativity" and the need to provide context for creative outlets, even if they aren't included in the activities section. "Talent or Skill" prompts applicants to explain how they developed their skills. "Educational Opportunity or Barrier" requires discussing how opportunities were leveraged or obstacles overcome. "Significant Challenge" allows applicants to narrate their responses without requiring extensive background information. "Academic Subject That Inspires You" lets applicants express their intellectual curiosity. "How You've Made Your Community a Better Place" permits a broad interpretation of "community." Lastly, "What Else" encourages sharing anything unique about the applicant. Craft Your Narrative: Thomas advises applicants to craft their stories, giving concrete examples for each personal insight question. There is no need to manufacture challenges, and answering "What Else" allows you to introduce any exceptional aspect of yourself. Conclusion: As the UC application deadline approaches, Thomas concludes by encouraging applicants to engage with the UC personal insight questions thoughtfully. Providing a 360-degree view of themselves is crucial since the UC application doesn't rely on recommendation letters, making it their responsibility to portray a comprehensive image of who they are. Thomas also mentions that he welcomes questions via the podcast's social media channels and wishes all applicants the best of luck in the UC application process. About Thomas Caleel Thomas is an alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania. After earning his MBA at the Wharton School of Business in 2003, he moved to Silicon Valley. For three years, he was Director of MBA Admissions and Financial Aid at Wharton. He worked closely with admissions professionals, students, alumni, and professors to curate the best possible MBA class. Thomas has been an entrepreneur his entire life in the fields of finance, agriculture, wellness, and sporting goods. As the founder of Global Education Opportunities LLC, he works as a high level admissions advisor to help families and students achieve their education goals. Thomas started the podcast Admittedly because he is passionate about demystifying the application process for all parents and applicants. Traveling abroad is an educational experience, whether you're traveling for school or just for fun. It's something that I highly recommend to my students because there are so many opportunities for learning skills in your field in addition to crucial life skills that will set you up to be a resilient and well rounded adult. In this episode, I'm sharing all the different ways you can learn from travel and why you should take advantage of travel opportunities when you can. Some key takeaways on travel as education are:Travel gives you resilience. It forces you out of your comfort zone for a long period of time, which usually results in having to problem solve or learn a new skill to handle whatever it throws at you.Traveling gives you a new perspective. You're stepping out of your own culture and into someone else's, which is such an educational, fun, and often humbling experience.Expect the magic when you travel. The people you meet can lead to the most incredible experiences when you least expect them, and the out-of-your-comfort-zone setting lends magic to every experience. The Admissions Club Podcast is your one-stop shop for all things college admissions, complete with a nostalgic 80s playlist and Gen X vibes. And then two more would die later of their injuries raising the final body count to 61. Although the shooting only lasted 10 minutes, the death and injury tolls made this massacre the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. Today we look into who Stephen was, why he may have done what he did, and we examine conspiracies that surrounded the shooting, promoted by conspiracy theorists like Alex Jones. "And then he saw something out of the corner of his eye. A man was running through the woods… with a look of fear on his face. He seemed to be definitely running away from something. Or from someBODY. Joe was about to call out to the man to see if he needed help when his mouth dropped. He saw, just as Vicky had before - that the man had no legs."Dan has two tales that both involve a haunted place. Both involve numerous people claiming to see or hear the same ghost or ghosts. For the first, shorter story, we'll head to the UK, down by Portsmouth just North of the Isle of Wight, to explore the ghosts of Hinton Ampner. A story of hauntings that  supposedly occurred back in the 18th century. Then, we are going to look into the crimes of midwest serial killer, Herb Baumeister, who buried numerous victims on his property in Indiana just north of Indianapolis in Carmel. Did his murders trap numerous spirits on Fox Hollow Farm, the beautiful estate where he lived and very, VERY likely murdered? Little true crime/haunted place mashup.  Lynze has two excellent stories and follows in Dan's footsteps with a little warm up and then a big scare. For the appetizer of spoops, she takes us to a college library where something or someone wants to have a few private moments, practicing their music. In her second tale, you best stay until the very end, because it all comes together ever so neatly. A young girl purchases an old vanity and within one day, she begins to see someone in the mirror. But whom? New Merch: Got some new, VERY cool merch in the bad magic store this week. Our very own STD cryptid! You gotta look at this thing to take it all in. A flower for a head. "Now my mother stopped convulsing and sat up and got face to face with my grandmother. But her face did not look like it should have. And she spoke in Camila's voice. She screamed in Spanish, “I'll take EVERYONE FROM YOU, WITCH!” Dan's first story is not one that will jump right out and terrify you but it sure is bizarre and creepy. The Lawson House saw much tragedy around it over the years, literally. A fatal train crash and a series of fires that did not involve the house itself but perhaps came to be the place the lost souls took up residence. One day, a bizarre collection of mannequins arrived on the porch of the Lawson house, with out explanation. Where did they come from? Who was dressing them? Propping them up? Adjusting the poses? No one ever took credit for it and then one day, it just stopped. Weird. Then in story two, Dan takes us to South America to Argentina to explore a possible family haunting, foul play and multiple deaths. A family divide, a disagreement goes next level when one family member not only (possibly) kills one family member but also comes for others after her own death. It's a wild ride and will have you wondering if you should be making offerings to the saint of death. Lynze has 3 tales this week, so fun! She starts off with the most skeptical family, a family of non-believers who eventually all see the same inhuman woman in their dreams. Who is she and what is she doing there is beyond anyone's knowledge but this family works together to attempt to banish her for good. Then, off to Ohio for a haunted bar tale. A little palette cleanser of a story, not super scary but definitely makes you wonder. And then lastly, a pair of teens harass a neighbor who is possibly a witch. Did they take it too far when they cussed her out? Does she want revenge? New Merch:A new vintage halloween decoration inspired tee in the bad magic store this week. A Grim Reaper tee! The first is about a man from England, Bill Ramsey, known in paranormal circles as “the Southend Werewolf.” Dan shares the very strange story of how he arrived at that moniker. The second story is about a mysterious disappearance, known as The Kinross Incident. Navigating educational equal opportunity is hard. Christopher Jencks's five principles for equal education opportunity make navigating equal education a little bit easier - once we understand the principles, of course. In this episode, Avra Reddy interviews Jaime Ahlberg (University of Florida) about how we can use moral principles to understand theories of justice in Jencks's paper. They explore questions like: why do principles matter? What is the difference between weak and strong humane justice? How do we pick the best principle? Plus an analogy to help you better understand how principles can help us navigate our lives. Are you teaching Jencks in your education or philosophy class? There's a study guide for this episode! “Get thee to a nunnery” Hamlet declares to Desdemona in Shakespeare's play, but for women in medieval England, being sent to an abbey or convent was not necessarily a penance. Taking orders could be as advantageous as an arranged marriage, providing women with a good education and positions of power and authority. In the medieval era Hampshire's Romsey Abbey was the church of a Benedictine nunnery and Catherine Capel of the University of Winchester tells the gripping stories of five women of royal blood who were connected in different ways with this great religious building.  On our website you will find more information about this episode including photographs, our fantastic show notes and a downloadable version of the transcript; visit our website by clicking here

Summer school terms like “COVID slide” and “pandemic learning loss” are getting a lot of play these days.   In Minnesota, we won't know how a full-school year of interrupted learning affected student academic skills until standardized test data is released in August. But, anecdotally, we know many students lost momentum, especially low-income students and children who rely on school routines and school support for stability. Early test scores from other states confirm that students are lagging in reading and math. MPR News guest host Nina Moini talks about how educators and families are using summer months to help students catch up, recover credits they need to graduate and get excited about school again.  Guests: Stephanie Graff is assistant commissioner for the Office of Educational Opportunity at the Minnesota Department of Education. She's also a former math teacher.  Adam Kunz oversees summer programs for Saint Paul Public Schools. He previously managed St. Paul's alternative high school program Gateways to College and taught high school English.   Nicole Hernandez is the youth development director at Children's Defense Fund Minnesota where she oversees Freedom Schools summer and afterschool programs.

"There is an assumption on women that they are not staying for the long run because they are going to have families one day. In my entire career I have never once known a woman to not come back from maternity leave because she wanted to stay home to be a mother. The only reason women do not come back is because it is not a culture they want to come back to." *** BIO Kelly Williams is the Founding Chair and Co-CEO of PEWIN.
