Special guest: Dr. Julie Kinn.Military families face many unique challenges- from long family separations and shifted responsibilities in the household to frequent moving, injuries and sadly, sometimes, grief and loss. That means that being a child in a military family means a great deal of adjustment to frequent change as well as a host of undulating emotions that come from deployment, reunions, the unknowns and the new normal. How do we talk to military kids about the unique challenges that they face? And how do we answer the questions from kids who are not military families about how to support and understand their military friends who may not always be on sure footing. Dr. Julie Kinn is a licensed clinical psychologist with over 15 years of experience researching and implementing health technology. At the Department of Defense and the Defense Health Agency, Kinn oversees the development and implementation of health technology for the military and veteran communities. She also initiated the Military Health Podcast program and produces/hosts three Department of defense OD podcasts: "A Better Night's Sleep", "The Military Meditation Coach", and "Next Generation Behavioral Health". Dr. Kinn, through the Department Of Defense, is responsible for two mobile apps with Sesame Street-- Sesame Street's Big Moving Adventure and Breathe, Think, Do. Big Moving Adventure was made to help kids cope with moving in the general sense, but was made specifically to help the children of military families who have to move constantly. I had a great conversation yesterday with Dr. Melissa Briggs-Phillips aka MBP (I just made that up!) with Behave Forward, Next Generation Behavioral Health in Columbus OH. Our interview will be out in the next month or so on this podcast so keep your eye peeled! This convo was perfect timing for me because of where I am in my own personal journey. Many of Melissa's clients are middle-aged males, with variations of childhood trauma. Although she therapizes all types of clients, I can see why she does well with the male population. She has an innate ability to cut through to the core of an issue with a good balance of masculine and feminine energy. In my experience, when working with a mentor, coach, counselor, or therapist, I like them to be able to be soft enough that I'll open up but firm enough to call me on my stories... you know, the ones filled with B.S.! She didn't ask me to write this and it surely isn't a paid post, #oneday. I was simply struck by our conversation and wanted to share it with you in case you're looking for someone to connect with. On this episode, I share about this thing that happens in personal development and recovery where things can get seemingly worse before they get better. In other words, you feel called or motivated to change in some area of your life and that thing you want to change gets harder to control. That is probably part of the problem... attempting to control the uncontrollable. I am at a place in my journey where I just feel raw, uncomfortable and, I wouldn't say lost, but I don't exactly see the light at the end of the tunnel yet! If I have a message for you in this episode it is, if you feel compelled to work through some hard shiz in your life, then do it. If you've been putting of reaching out to someone or hiring a therapist, coach, or counselor, then do it. And, if you're in it and it's harder and more uncomfortable than you thought... well my friends, this is what being a responsible adult feels like, lol! You are not alone. If you think of someone that could benefit from hearing this podcast, remember to share it with them and I would love to hear from you. Give us a review on Itunes, Apple Podcasts, or anywhere you listen to Podcasts. The Queen Bee Syndrome. To some, this means Beyonce. To others, the leader of the group. Hear Dr. Melissa Briggs-Phillips hit on what it is and how it impacts women today. Melissa explains why she dislikes the word “syndrome” and her reasoning. She compares research with her own insights as a woman. With experience teaching a Psychology of Women class at the Ohio State University, Melissa’s well-versed on The Queen Bee Syndrome. She uses a theoretical lens that looks at research and facts all while using real-life experiences. And it makes sense! Melissa is the Owner and Founder of Next Generation Behavioral Health, a full-service clinical psychology practice and consulting firm. After completing her Ph.D., Melissa spent 15 years providing leadership on complex projects before opening her clinical practice and organizational speaking full-time. She’s a “ruthless optimist” that believes innovation happens at the intersection of divergent disciplines. Listen in to hear more about research, the Queen Bee Syndrome, and what the word feminism means to her.
