In this insightful episode, host Mallory chats live from the AMA Higher Education Symposium in Las Vegas with Nathan Ament, VP of Enrollment at Knox College. Together, they dive into the intersection of enrollment and marketing at small colleges, explore the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on student recruitment, and discuss innovative strategies for demonstrating the value of higher education to diverse stakeholders. From AI-driven student interactions to creative storytelling around education's ROI, this episode is packed with actionable insights for higher ed professionals.AI Enhances Student Engagement: AI tools can foster meaningful, personalized connections with prospective students, addressing their needs without fear of judgment.Overcoming Website Challenges: AI has spurred a renewed focus on ensuring institutional websites are updated and accurate, reinforcing their value as a key resource.Transformational Power of Voice AI: Voice-powered AI tools allow admissions offices to address inquiries efficiently, saving staff time and improving lead quality.Showcasing the Value of Higher Education: It's essential for institutions to use data and strategic messaging to communicate their impact, especially in a climate of skepticism.Balancing AI with Human Connection: AI tools don't replace staff but complement their efforts, enabling counselors to focus on high-value tasks and relationship building. What is an Enrollment Professional Doing at a Marketing Conference? Nathan Ament opens up about why a VP of Enrollment would attend AMA's marketing-focused symposium. For small colleges like Knox, enrollment and marketing are deeply intertwined. With limited staff, the admissions team often handles significant marketing responsibilities, making it crucial to stay informed about the latest trends. Nathan highlights the value of sessions centered on executive communications, campus messaging, and enrollment strategies. How Can Higher Ed Institutions Demonstrate Their Value to Stakeholders? A standout fireside chat at AMA tackled the pressing need for institutions to justify their value to external stakeholders, such as state legislators and community partners. Nathan reflects on this session's relevance, noting the unique challenges small colleges face when replicating such efforts with fewer resources. He underscores the importance of showcasing higher ed's societal impact with clear messaging and robust data—especially in today's polarized climate. How is Knox College Leveraging AI in Enrollment? Knox College is integrating AI-powered student recruiters to improve top-of-funnel engagement. This tool interacts with students via calls and chats, answering questions, providing personalized support, and even alleviating anxieties students may feel when speaking with human counselors. Nathan emphasizes the surprising success of these tools, including their ability to engage students in thoughtful, judgment-free conversations. What Role Do Websites and Search Play in AI Strategy? Nathan acknowledges the need for a website overhaul at Knox, pointing out how AI has become a catalyst for faculty to prioritize site updates. While many students use Google to find information about colleges, ensuring institutional websites are up-to-date is critical to delivering accurate, AI-driven insights. He also touches on the potential of AI-powered site search as a future development.Does AI Complement or Replace Human Interaction? Nathan is clear: AI is a tool to enhance, not replace, the work of admissions counselors. By addressing routine queries, AI allows staff to focus on building deeper relationships with applicants. This approach not only improves efficiency but also ensures that high-quality conversations happen at key stages of the enrollment funnel. - - - -Connect With Our Co-Hosts:Mallory Willsea https://www.linkedin.com/in/mallorywillsea/https://twitter.com/mallorywillseaSeth Odell https://www.linkedin.com/in/sethodell/https://twitter.com/sethodellAbout The Enrollify Podcast Network:The Higher Ed Pulse is a part of the Enrollify Podcast Network. Today's book is: A Pedagogy of Kindness (University of Oklahoma Press, 2024), by Dr. Catherine Denial, which explores why academia is not, by and large, a kind place. Without kindness at its core, Catherine Denial suggests, higher education fails students and instructors—and its mission—in critical ways. Part manifesto, part teaching memoir, part how-to guide, A Pedagogy of Kindness urges higher education to get aggressive about instituting kindness, which Dr. Denial distinguishes from niceness. Having suffered beneath the weight of just “getting along,” instructors need to shift every part of what they do to prioritizing care and compassion—for students as well as for themselves. A Pedagogy of Kindness articulates a fresh vision for teaching, one that focuses on ensuring justice, believing people, and believing in people. Offering evidence-based insights and drawing from her own rich experiences as a professor, Dr. Denial offers practical tips for reshaping syllabi, assessing student performance, and creating trust and belonging in the classroom. Her suggestions for concrete, scalable actions outline nothing less than a transformational discipline—one in which, together, we create bright new spaces, rooted in compassion, in which all engaged in teaching and learning might thrive. Welcome to Season 9 of Dead Ideas in Teaching and Learning! In this season, with our new host Columbia CTL Executive Director Amanda Irvin, we are exploring the dead idea that the world “outside” of the classroom doesn't or shouldn't influence the world “inside” the classroom—that students are exclusively intellectual beings when they step across the threshold (physical or virtual) of the classroom space. In our first episode we speak with guest Cate Denial, the Bright Distinguished Professor of American History and Director of the Bright Institute at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, and author of the book A Pedagogy of Kindness (2024). Cate's new book argues for the strength and capacity instructors and students gain when they meet each other as whole human beings. Dr. Denial discusses her book and shares suggestions for instructors everywhere on how to implement a pedagogy of kindness in their own classrooms. Resource: A Pedagogy of Kindness (2024) by Cate Denial

Dr. Cornelis Van Dam joins us to speak about his book In the Beginning: Listening to Genesis 1 and 2, in which he argues that reading Genesis 1 and 2 as history is not only justified but necessary. Van Dam clarifies the different roles that ancient Near Eastern literature and scientific theories should play in our understanding of the Bible as he carefully deals with the exegetical details of the first two chapters of the Bible. He writes: The focus of this work is therefore not to give an all-around commentary and explanation of every verse in Genesis 1 and 2, but to listen to Scripture in order to find out what God is revealing to us about the historicity of the beginning chapters of Genesis. Concentrating on listening to what Scripture actually says brings with it the realization that the reader of the Word has a relatively modest place. The one who listens to Scripture acknowledges that the Word, not the reader, determines the meaning of the text (p. 9). Dr. Van Dam is an Old Testament scholar, who has served with distinction as a professor of Old Testament at the Canadian Reformed Theological Seminary from 1981 to 2011. He holds degrees from Wilfrid Laurier University, Canadian Reformed Theological Seminary, Knox College at the University of Toronto, and the Theological University of Kampen. Over his career, he has made significant contributions to Old Testament scholarship, with a special focus on the Pentateuch. He is the author of notable works including In the Beginning: Listening to Genesis 1 and 2, The Elder, and The Deacon. These publications reflect his commitment to exploring not merely themes in biblical studies but also their implications for Christian doctrine and practice. Dr. Van Dam was honored in 2011 with a Festschrift titled Living Waters from Ancient Springs: Essays in Honor of Cornelis Van Dam. This volume, featuring contributions from notable scholars such as Hans Boersma and Al Wolters, is a testament to his significant impact on theological scholarship and his enduring legacy in biblical studies.

In this wide-ranging discussion, we dove deep into the fascinating world of evolutionary psychology with Dr. Frank McAndrew, Ph.D., a renowned professor of psychology at Knox College. Our conversation started with an exploration of “Dunbar's Number”, which delves into the limits of human social connections. We pondered the significance of this limit in our increasingly connected yet isolating world. From there, the discussion evolved to touch upon language, dialects, and accents. Dr. McAndrew and I discussed how even in countries with a common language, various dialects and accents develop, highlighting our natural inclination to create smaller groups within the larger whole. We considered how these divisions could lead to both positive and negative outcomes and examined the complexities of human nature. Our conversation then shifted towards the roles of leaders and politicians in our society. We contemplated the challenges they face in balancing their personal beliefs and agendas with the expectations of the public. Dr. McAndrew expressed the importance of understanding the evolutionary psychology behind human behavior and how it can influence our interactions and conflicts. As we explored the topic of retirement, Dr. McAndrew provided valuable insights from his own perspective. He shared that retirement doesn't have to be an abrupt stop to one's professional life but rather a change in the ratio of activities we choose to pursue. He discussed how having a flexible plan for retirement can be a healthy approach and reflected on his own path towards retirement. Throughout our conversation, we touched on various subjects, from the traits of effective leaders to the ways in which human nature and evolution shape our interactions. We also examined the impacts of biases and prejudices, and how understanding these behaviors can lead to more effective ways of addressing and mitigating them. Ultimately, this thought-provoking conversation with Dr. Frank McAndrew offered insights into the complex world of human psychology and the importance of understanding our evolutionary roots to foster a more compassionate and harmonious society.  We found it to be an engaging and enlightening exploration of the human experience!
