If you're eating clean, clocking your daily steps, tracking your protein, and doing "all the right things", yet your body seems more resistant to change with every passing year, you're not alone. For so many women in midlife, the scale simply won't budge, and it's easy to blame yourself or feel defeated. But what if the missing piece isn't more discipline, but understanding how stress, shifting hormones, and chronic exhaustion reshape your metabolism and your path to health? Award-winning journalist and trusted guide for women 40+, Natalie Tysdal, combines nearly three decades of health reporting with real-life insight to unpack why weight loss in midlife often has less to do with willpower and more to do with creating a sense of safety in your body. Today, Natalie explores why classic approaches like restricting calories or ramping up workouts can backfire and how exhaustion, ongoing stress, hormone fluctuations, and disrupted sleep can silently change everything from blood sugar stability to gut health, from cravings to mood. With warmth and steady authority, Natalie provides context and clarity—not hype—about what really moves the needle for women navigating this unique life stage. What you'll learn: How chronic stress and elevated cortisol impact your metabolism, appetite, and stubborn weight gain after 40 Why gut health and the gut-brain connection are crucial for hormonal balance, digestion, and your body's response to stress Which habits may unknowingly send your body further into "survival mode"—and simple shifts that signal safety instead The role of sleep, protein, weight training, and reducing daily decision fatigue in supporting a healthier midlife body Why relentless self-criticism and urgency around weight loss often make things harder, not better Midlife isn't about trying harder—it's about letting go of perfection, learning how your body truly works, and building steady habits that honor the complexity of this chapter. This episode is for women who are ready for real answers, gentle validation, and an achievable path that prioritizes well-being over relentless striving. Why does stress seem to hit so much harder in midlife? If you've ever found yourself feeling anxious, emotionally flat, overwhelmed, reactive, or strangely disconnected from yourself, this conversation may help make sense of what's going on beneath the surface. In this episode of Living Life Naturally, I'm joined by Owen Marcus, Founder and CEO of MELD, to talk about stress, emotional resilience, and the concept of the window of tolerance — the range in which your nervous system feels safe enough to think clearly, respond calmly, and stay connected to yourself and others. Owen explains how chronic stress can gradually shrink that window, especially during seasons like midlife and menopause when the body may already be carrying more load. We talk about why common advice like "just breathe" or "think positive" often falls flat when you're already in a survival state, and why nervous system support needs to start with understanding what your body is actually experiencing. This conversation explores the difference between hyperarousal and freeze, why disconnection can become such a common midlife experience, and how body awareness, co-regulation, and gentle somatic tools can support greater steadiness and emotional resilience. If you've been feeling wired, numb, overly emotional, or not quite like yourself, this episode offers an eye-opening and compassionate look at what stress may really be doing — and how you can begin to support yourself more effectively. In this episode, we discuss: what the window of tolerance means and why it matters how chronic stress affects the body and brain why midlife and menopause can make stress feel more intense the difference between fight-or-flight and freeze responses why common stress-management tools sometimes don't work how body awareness can help shift your nervous system the role of co-regulation and connection in feeling calmer why understanding your stress response is the first step toward change About Owen Marcus Owen Marcus is the Founder and CEO of MELD (Men's Emotional Leadership Development), a pioneer in men's emotional health, and the author of Grow Up: A Man's Guide to Emotional Maturity. Is testosterone the "missing piece" of your hormone puzzle, or is it a social media-fueled performance enhancer? In this deep-dive episode, Dr. Rachel Pope is joined by Dr. Tami Rowen, a lead gynecologist at UCSF and expert in sexual and transgender health, to separate data from hype. They tackle the confusing world of testosterone for women—from its role in desire and energy to the hidden history of how it was once used to protect the uterus. In This Episode, We Discuss: The HSDD Breakthrough: Why the best-known data for testosterone is in treating Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD), and the surprising truth about the doses used in successful clinical trials. The "Menopause Cliff" Myth: Why testosterone doesn't actually crash at menopause, but rather begins a slow, steady decline in your 30s. Dosing & Safety: The difference between "physiologic" levels (what you had in your 20s) and "supra-physiologic" doses (performance-enhancing levels) often seen in boutique pellet clinics. The Breast Cancer Debate: Is testosterone protective or risky? Dr. Rowen explains the "anti-proliferative" nature of the hormone and the nuances of aromatization into estrogen. The "Estratest" History: A look back at why we once used estrogen and testosterone together to protect the uterine lining—long before progesterone became the standard. Cognition, Mood, & Muscle: Does it actually help with brain fog or gym gains? We look at why the data is mixed and the power of the "placebo effect." The FDA Gap: Why the U.S. still lacks a testosterone product specifically approved for women and what that means for your prescriptions.Key Resources & Mentions: ISSWISH: International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health Dr. Tami Rowen: UCSF Health Profile Research Study: The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) and the 300mcg testosterone patch trials.About Our Guest:Dr. Tami Rowen is a board-certified OB/GYN and Associate Professor at UCSF. It's Friday. Pause for a breath you didn't know you were holding. Exhale. This week's Soft Landings affirmation is for the woman who keeps mistaking her patterns for her personality. For every midlife woman who's been fighting the thing she does instead of getting curious about why she does it.Today's Affirmation: "My patterns kept me safe. I get to thank them and want something different."The thing you keep doing – the overfunctioning, the over-explaining, the keeping yourself small, the white-knuckling your independence, whatever yours is – it wasn't a mistake. It was a solution. A really smart one, for circumstances that once required exactly that response. It kept you safe. It kept you steady. It did its job.The problem isn't that you're broken. The problem is that the pattern is still running the same programme for a situation that no longer exists. Like a smoke alarm going off because you forgot your bagel in the toaster. So today, instead of fighting it or shaming it or trying to think your way out of it – what if you just said thank you? Thank you for protecting me when I needed protecting. I'm okay now. You can rest. You don't have to dismantle a pattern to be free of it. Sometimes you just need to stop treating it like an enemy and start treating it like a part of you that was doing its best with what it had. That's not giving up. That's actually where the shift begins.Save. Share. Come back when you need the reminder.

I see you... you are a high-functioning Christian woman tired of powering through constant fatigue, brain fog, autoimmune flares, and that deep exhaustion no amount of coffee fixes. You're driven, faith-filled, and called to impact your family and kingdom...yet overwhelm, confusion, and non-answers from the mainstream medical model leave you feeling stuck, dismissed, and questioning what's truly needed for you to truly have good health. In this powerful episode of Treasured Wellness, Dr. Ben Rall (host of Designed to Heal podcast) joins me to remind us of God's intentional design for healing in body, mind, and spirit. We explore why the church often mirrors the world's sickness levels, the spiritual roots of disease (especially fear that steals our power, love, and sound mind -2 Timothy 1:7), and the deceptions keeping so many women trapped in cycles of fatigue and brain fog. Dr. Ben pulls back the veil on conventional health pushes...including vaccines and prescriptions... and equips you with biblical discernment to navigate lies, fear, and misinformation. You'll discover the most important step right now if you're fed up and ready to OWN your health: reclaiming wisdom from the One who fearfully and wonderfully made you. Our bodies are designed to heal when we give them what they truly need. Good health is your birthright in Christ Jesus and it has generational impact for God's glory. You know I'm passionate about YOU being your own best advocate because God has given you His Spirit of power, not fear. This episode may challenge you and maybe step on your toes, but it will also empower you to treasure your wellness... for you, your family, and His kingdom. You've done the therapy. You've journalled. You can explain your patterns with real precision — where they came from, what they're protecting, why they formed. And yet. There you are. Have you ever been told your labs are "normal"… but you still feel off? In this episode, Lynne sits down with Katie Hardie, a board-certified holistic nutritionist and FDN practitioner, to unpack what so many midlife women experience: symptoms that don't always show up clearly on standard bloodwork. Katie explains the difference between standard lab ranges (which are designed to identify dysfunction) and functional optimal ranges (which are designed to support how you actually feel). They discuss why it's worth advocating for more comprehensive testing, how inflammation can play a role in midlife symptoms, and why stress support — including simple breathing tools — can be a game-changer for overall wellbeing. They also touch on hormone profiling options like the DUTCH Plus test, and why ongoing support and education can help women feel more confident and less stuck when navigating perimenopause and midlife changes. Your energy, mood, and focus don't have to be a mystery. We sit down with Dr. Kevin Smith, a board-certified functional medicine practitioner, to unpack the thyroid's real role in midlife health and why so many women are told “your labs look fine” while symptoms persist. From brain fog and anxiety to constipation, weight shifts, and burnout, we map how thyroid hormones act as the body's metabolic gas pedal—and what goes wrong when the system breaks down.We explore hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and why a large share of people with low thyroid function are actually dealing with Hashimoto's, an autoimmune process. Dr. Smith explains why a TSH-only approach misses crucial steps like T4-to-T3 conversion in the liver and gut, the transport of hormones via thyroid binding globulin, and the impact of inflammation on receptor sites. We dig into hidden triggers that keep you stuck: anemia and iron deficiencies, insulin resistance, cortisol imbalances, sex hormone shifts during perimenopause and menopause, chronic infections like Epstein–Barr, and exposure to endocrine disruptors—yes, even in everyday cosmetics. You'll hear how functional medicine builds a complete picture with broader lab panels, targeted nutrient support, and personalized plans that go beyond symptom chasing. We talk practical moves you can make now: balancing blood sugar, optimizing sleep and protein, choosing cleaner skincare and makeup, and testing smarter to uncover underconversion or transport issues. If you've ever felt dismissed by “normal” labs while your body says otherwise, this conversation offers clarity and a roadmap you can act on.If this episode helped you connect the dots, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs answers, and leave a quick review so more women can find their path to better thyroid health.Bio Dr. Kevin Smith is a board-certified chiropractor and functional medicine practitioner who has been in practice since 2001. He is also a public speaker and published author, with his second book on functional medicine set to release later this year.Dr. Smith specializes in identifying and treating complex or misdiagnosed chronic conditions without drugs or surgery. Many patients seek his care after feeling frustrated by limited results from traditional medical approaches.Rather than masking symptoms, Dr. Smith uses a functional medicine model to uncover and address the root causes of illness — helping patients restore health by identifying and eliminating underlying triggers.Social Media LinkedInTwitterFacebookWebsitehttps://www.chronicpa.com/Thank you for listening to the V.I.B.E. Have you ever stopped and thought, Why do I keep getting stuck in the same patterns?Or wondered why midlife brings up so many questions about identity, confidence, and purpose? In Part 1 of this two-part conversation, I'm joined by Drenda Thomas Richards, author of Dare to Remember, for an honest and eye-opening discussion about the stories we've been carrying since childhood — often without even realizing it.We talk about how early messages from family, culture, church, and society quietly shape our beliefs, decisions, and fears in midlife. What if your mood swings, anxiety, sleep issues, or loss of motivation aren't just "getting older?" What role does oxytocin really play in midlife, and why has it been overlooked for so long? In this episode, I'm joined by the brilliant hormone scholar Dr. Lindsey Berkson, and we dive into a part of menopause that almost no one is talking about—what's happening in your brain. We explore how hormones act as the body's Wi‑Fi system, and what happens when that signal gets disrupted. Could environmental toxins be hijacking not just estrogen and progesterone, but oxytocin too? And if so, how might that impact connection, libido, blood sugar, digestion, or even depression? This conversation gets bold, nuanced, and deeply eye-opening. Dr. Berkson also challenges mainstream narratives around hormone therapy. Were we misled about estrogen and breast cancer? Why do some women struggle with HRT while others thrive? And could detoxification and nutrient status be the missing link? If you've ever wondered why your body isn't responding the way you expected, you won't want to miss this one! In this episode, we uncover: How oxytocin impacts mood, sleep, libido, and connection in midlife. Why environmental toxins may disrupt your hormonal "Wi‑Fi." What makes some women struggle with hormone replacement therapy. How oxytocin supports blood sugar, digestion, and pain relief. Why estrogen and progesterone are more protective than you've been told. Listen now, and let's start asking better questions about what's really happening in menopause! When they start dating an avoidant partner, many people are still very close to a friend that fulfills their emotional or intellectual needs, who they flirt with (if they are honest). When the main relationship with the avoidant becomes more serious, like engagement or marriage, they end the friendship bc they want to engage fully in the relationship. Unfortunately, this is when it becomes obvious that the avoidant partner is not really someone who can meet their full emotional needs, and was only sufficient as part of an emotional harem. If you're in this situation, it is only a matter of time before you start questioning whether you can remain lonely in your marriage forever. This can also happen with same sex friends or even family! It's Friday. Pause for a breath you didn't know you were holding. Exhale. This week's Soft Landings affirmation is for the woman who's tired of measuring herself against someone else's yardstick. For midlife women exhausted from the endless performance of worth.Today's Affirmation:"I release the belief that my worth is defined by what I've been taught to buy, do, or become."You don't need the right house, the right body, the right title to matter. You don't need to achieve enough, accumulate enough, or transform enough to be worthy.Your worth isn't a product. It isn't a performance. It isn't a before-and-after photo. This weekly self-worth affirmation for women in midlife is a gentle reminder: you're already whole. Worthy without the purchase. Worthy without the productivity. Worthy without the perfect transformation. What would it feel like to stop chasing someone else's definition of enough? Not because you've proven anything. Not because you've earned the right. Just because you're already whole.Save. Share. Come back when you need the reminder.
What if the very thing people told you was “too much” about you was actually your greatest gift?In this soulful conversation, Wendy talks with Oneika Mays — meditation teacher, storyteller, and author — about what it really means to bet on yourself in midlife. Oneika shares how she moved from 20 years as a bookseller to teaching mindfulness (including groundbreaking work at Rikers Island), and how grief ultimately gave her the permission to pursue her lifelong dream of writing. At 54, Oneika is stepping fully into a creative life — with a debut book on the way and a TV pilot already winning awards. Her story is a powerful reminder that reinvention is not one bold leap, but a series of brave choices to trust yourself again and again. If you've ever been told you're “too much,” this episode is for you. What you'll hear in this episode

Midlife and menopause can bring real physical and psychological changes that affect libido, arousal, and pleasure—but that doesn't mean desire or a satisfying sex life are destined to disappear. This week we sat down with registered nurse and Permission for Pleasure author Cindy Scharkey to unpack what actually happens to desire, arousal, pleasure, and our bodies as we move through perimenopause, menopause, and beyond. We explore why so many women stop wanting sex in midlife, how hormones, stress, body image, and long-term relationships play a role, and why waiting to be “in the mood” often doesn't work anymore (and more importantly, what does).Cindy Scharkey, RN, BSN, PHN, is a healthcare professional with almost 4 decades of experience. Throughout her career as a Certified Childbirth Educator, OB/GYN nurse and speaker, she has been consistently exposed to the taboos and silence surrounding women's sexuality. Cindy is passionate about providing women with the content and self-confidence they need to find freedom on their own sexual wellness journey. As the author of Permission for Pleasure: Tending Your Sexual Garden, and Host of the Permission for Pleasure podcast, Cindy offers education and conversations about expressing, experiencing and enjoying your sexuality. Anxiety often feels like it comes out of nowhere in midlife—especially during perimenopause and after menopause. You're doing “all the right things,” yet your nervous system feels constantly on edge. Racing thoughts. Poor sleep. A sense that something isn't right… but you can't quite name it.In this episode of Asking for a Friend, I'm joined by Dr. Lori Davis, licensed psychologist, clinical instructor at Weill Cornell Medicine, and author of the upcoming workbook This Is Your Anxiety on Menopause. Together, we unpack why anxiety often intensifies in midlife—and what women can actually do about it.Dr. Davis shares both the science and the lived experience behind anxiety, explaining how hormonal shifts, nervous system changes, sleep disruption, perfectionism, and decades of “pushing through” collide in this season of life. We also talk about why anxiety may feel different now than it did earlier in life—and why you are not broken. In this conversation, we cover:Why anxiety often spikes during perimenopause and menopauseWhether menopause causes anxiety or unmasks an existing vulnerabilityThe role of hormones, cortisol, sleep, and the nervous systemWhy worry loops and nighttime anxiety are so commonEvidence-based tools to calm anxiety (including breathing, exposure, and cognitive strategies)When therapy or medication may be helpful—and when lifestyle alone isn't enoughHow to stop fighting anxiety and start working with your nervous systemThis episode is grounding, practical, and deeply validating for women navigating midlife changes. If you've ever thought, “Why am I suddenly anxious when nothing is technically wrong?”—this conversation will help you connect the dots.
