Season 3 Episode 6 Military Kids Grow up So Fast Welcome to Episode 6 of this year's podcast!! We are so glad to have you here and to see that you are part of our community. This month as April being the month of the Military Child we wanted to end the month with a special episode paying tribute to the amazing people who make up the kids of the military community. We had a special guest of Chandelle Walker today and we enjoyed such a lively conversation about what it is to be a military child, how that changes from being a baby to growing up and becoming an adult who has been a brat the entire time of their youth. “As a mother you stand and look strong, because you are proud of your husband. But you also take on this huge responsibility and role for your children” -Chandelle Walker. It's really important to realize that kids are “resilient and strong” but they have very valid concerns, and emotions and that there is so much importance in validating them and accepting them where they are. Not alway just telling them they are so strong. Especially when they grow into young adults being able to discuss as a family those feelings will only help to strengthen your connection. Like they say “Compassion Creates Understanding”. “Sometimes even as little kids they can recognize your feelings, and help to bring back the joy” -Chandelle Walker. We know oftentimes the resources are scrambled across the internet. It exists but is not always easy to find when you need it. Here is a few that we mentioned. Today we are talking to all grown up military kid Chelsea. Chelsea grew up with both her mom and dad being active duty Army. Her mom transitioned out a few years after she was born, but her dad finished out a 20 year career.Chelsea shares that she absolutely loved being a military kid and it truly helped form her into the successful adult she is today. She does share some of the challenges she had as a military kid and how they creeped over into her adult life.Challenges with separation anxiety, OCD tendencies, compulsive need to be on time or early everywhere and how some of those have bled over into raising her own 4 daughters. Some of the things that Chelsea had through her military life that have helped in her adult life are acts of service. Volunteering with veteran or military groups helps to keep you grounded to the mission and her mom always told her when you give, you get back so much more. Letting our military kids know that we move a lot because of our lifestyle, but one day they will get to choose. And they can choose to stay in one spot for the rest of their life if they want, our lifestyle right now is temporary.Military kids don't get to choose their military lives, they are born into them. As a military family, one of my biggest fears is how our crazy, chaotic, unpredictable lifestyle affects our kids.On today's show, I am talking to Meaghan Sniegowski, a military kid, all grown up.Meaghan was born into the military and travelled all over the country with her family while her Dad pursued his career as a Navy pilot, having just retired last year. We talk about what she remembers from growing up military. Challenges she remembers and the benefits of being raised in the military. And how her upbringing has formed her into the person she is today. It was a fascinating conversation and honestly it made me feel a whole lot better about how our lifestyle affects our kids! I so appreciate you listening to the show!If you wouldn't mind leaving a rating and review I would really appreciate it!!To get in touch with Alison with questions or potential topics or guests please emailthemilspousepodcast@gmail.comIf you are looking for even more connection join our Facebook group!https://www.facebook.com/groups/847658452565001

Special guest: Dr. Julie Kinn.Military families face many unique challenges- from long family separations and shifted responsibilities in the household to frequent moving, injuries and sadly, sometimes, grief and loss. That means that being a child in a military family means a great deal of adjustment to frequent change as well as a host of undulating emotions that come from deployment, reunions, the unknowns and the new normal. How do we talk to military kids about the unique challenges that they face? And how do we answer the questions from kids who are not military families about how to support and understand their military friends who may not always be on sure footing. Dr. Julie Kinn is a licensed clinical psychologist with over 15 years of experience researching and implementing health technology. At the Department of Defense and the Defense Health Agency, Kinn oversees the development and implementation of health technology for the military and veteran communities. She also initiated the Military Health Podcast program and produces/hosts three Department of defense OD podcasts: "A Better Night's Sleep", "The Military Meditation Coach", and "Next Generation Behavioral Health". Dr. Kinn, through the Department Of Defense, is responsible for two mobile apps with Sesame Street-- Sesame Street's Big Moving Adventure and Breathe, Think, Do.  Big Moving Adventure was made to help kids cope with moving in the general sense, but was made specifically to help the children of military families who have to move constantly. Dr. Kinn's overall mission is to promote behavioral health for veterans and their families which includes promoting behavioral health in their communities as well.  The post How to Talk to Military Kids about Common Stressors and Concerns with Dr. Julie Kinn appeared first on drrobynsilverman.com.
