While this can be time consuming to initially set up, it makes the inevitable turn over much easier to handle when the on-boarding of new board members and volunteers can be smooth and quick Tech Stack· Canva for graphics - the free version is very robust for pulling in volunteers· Email Service Provider - email collection, storage, automation and marketing – · Meditation app – the mental clarity has really helped with creativity and feeling less overwhelmed· Digital notepad – Can write things out that are immediately converted to typed text for easy dissemination if needed, and allows you to access your notes on other devices like a phone while you're on the go· Trello or Basecamp – Keeps everyone updated and on the same page with projects without you having to continually explain where you are in the process· Google Docs – simple and excellent for onboarding and turnover Management Tips· It is key to start with a culture of caring about the people you manage· Being empathetic and leading with a compassionate heart· When you build culture you build retention across the board – donors, volunteers, employees· Inclusivity is not just about diversity, it is also about building a culture where everyone feels heard, seen and accepted· Psychological safety is the number one thing for all organizations whether they are nonprofits or businesseso Ask questions safelyo Provide feedback safely· Investing in your weak points even when there isn't a lot of wiggle room in the budgeto Paying for a management courseo Hiring an outside consultant to run technology, or engage more deeply with donors, anything outside your area of expertise· Remember to delegate and let go so your team can help your organization grow Nicole's Must-Have Tool for any project – Google Suite. This week, Dan Neumann is joined by Nicole Scheffler who is an Engineering Leader from VMware. Nicole has some passion projects around the Tech Diva Success collection, including podcasts, books, and courses, all with diversity as their main component. Tech is a field that is not particularly diverse and that is the reason why in today's episode, Nicole is sharing the meaning of diversity, inclusion, and equity and what that might look like in the workplace from an organization to an individual level. Key Takeaways What do diversity, inclusion, and equity mean? Nicole shares an analogy: Diversity is being invited to the dance, inclusion is being able to dance and being asked to dance when you are there, and equity is the feeling that you belong there. Progress happens when everyone has a voice and is being heard. Psychological safety and culture building is crucial in an organization. Innovation is another pillar for success. How are companies handling diversity? Design thinking is a great way of practicing inclusion. Most organizations have diversity on their radar, but there is a need to make sure that they are not just “checking the box.” Organizations need to do a statistical analysis to determine where diversity is broken. Ask questions, if you don't ask, you won't know. What does sharing perspectives look like? Don't assume someone's role. Nicole shares some valuable examples. What can teams do independently from the organization? Ask yourself if you are judging a woman differently than you do with a man, are you being fair? Good leaders take seriously the job of creating psychologically safe workplaces. What can you do to promote diversity and inclusion? Speak up and share resources. Evaluate if you have unconscious bias. Make sure that your team knows what is available. Be an ally and speak up when something is wrong. Does the definition of success change based on the industry you're in or your gender? There are stories that go around that say that women don't support women yet from all the interviews I've done, and my experiences in the tech and business worlds, I've found that that is not the truth. I found that more women support women then we are led to believe. My guest today lives and breathes her philosophy that success is not about external trappings and that if we learn to get clear to determine what it is we truly want and align our internal and external lives with that, then happiness and success can be achieved. Nicole Scheffler is a woman in tech, although like many of us women in tech, she just prefers to say she's in tech and forget adding the woman part. Nicole has spent much of her career helping others succeed as she succeeded. On today's episode Nicole and I talk about success, lifting other people up, and the questions she asks herself to align herself with her own definition of success. Nicole Scheffler is a Tech Diva dedicated to sparking success for women in technology careers – women who are working to own their career success and realize impact in a male-dominated field. Nicole empowers women with proven success principles to help them define their aspirations, goals, and boost their daily contributions in the digital world. Applying more than 16 years’ experience in a fast-paced technology career, the wisdom featured in her best-selling “Pillars of Success” book with Jack Canfield, and hundreds of hours interviewing women in tech on her podcasts, Nicole provides a clear success framework for women in all stages of their tech careers. How can I take 100% responsibility in my life? What can I control when I respond to a situation? How can I cultivate more happiness in my life? "Taking 100% responsibility for your life is essential" Have you ever heard of E+R=O or the SCIPAB Method?
