You're alone in your office after hours, staring at the numbers, and you can feel it: the practice has more potential. The hard part isn't the math. The hard part is saying “production goals” out loud without feeling like you've betrayed patient care or turned into a salesperson. We've been trained to talk dentistry, not revenue, so it makes sense that money talk can feel awkward, corporate, or even greedy. We walk through a simple but powerful reframe for dental practice management: if you don't define what production, growth, and profit mean, your dental team will define it for you, and it often turns into pressure, discomfort, and underpresented treatment. That discomfort leaks into case acceptance, financial conversations, and patient trust. Then we use three questions to anchor the conversation in ethics and confidence: do patients need what we recommend, do we do good clinical work, and do we take great care of people through the full experience? When those are true, presenting treatment becomes clarity, not manipulation. From there, dental office metrics stop being “just numbers” and start representing value provided: pain relieved, teeth saved, disease treated, confidence restored. We also make the case that healthy dental practice profitability can improve patient care by funding better technology, training, team retention, and a calmer practice culture that isn't desperate for every yes. If you want a stronger, more aligned team and sustainable dental practice growth, this is the mindset shift that makes the leadership conversations easier. Subscribe to Dental Practice Heroes, share this with a practice owner who hates talking about money, and leave a review so more dentists can find it. Collecting money in a practice tends to be one of the more difficult tasks. At times, odd emotions get in the way. Sometimes we feel guilt over charging a patient for something they need, a service they receive. We attempt to lighten the guilt feeling by making unsanctioned collections agreements or even avoiding to collect altogether. Balances can loom over our heads at times and can cause patients to resist returning to the practice. Dr. Kuba and Bethany tackle this topic today. It is a MUST listen as collections are pivotal to the success of every practice. Stay tuned in the June Subscription for even more collections tips and training!

Shared Practices | Your Dental Roadmap to Practice Ownership | Custom Made for the New Dentist
Welcome back to the Shared Practices podcast. In this episode of Ask George, we're diving into a question we hear all the time from aspiring owners: How do you build a real business instead of just buying yourself a job? Whether you're preparing to purchase your first practice or thinking about expanding into your second or third location, this conversation will give you a clearer, more honest picture of what ownership really looks like today.Dentistry has changed a lot over the years. With more options like DSOs, choosing private practice is no longer the default—it's a decision. And for many, that decision means stepping into the role of an entrepreneur. That comes with real challenges: managing rising staff costs, dealing with insurance reimbursements, and navigating tighter margins, especially in a post-COVID landscape. But at the same time, it creates an opportunity to build something that can grow beyond your own clinical work.So what's the difference between a job and a business? If everything depends on you being in the chair day in and day out, it's still a job—no matter how successful it looks on paper. A true business is built to operate and generate income even when you're not there. That shift in mindset is what separates operators from owners.George breaks down a practical path to get there, including how to build around multiple providers, improve efficiency, and create systems that support long-term growth. From bringing on associates to optimizing your space and team, it's all about creating a structure that doesn't rely solely on you. Ready to take the next step in your dental practice journey? Bethany and Dr. Kuba take a more serious tone today as they address the very real hardships of leadership, management, and practice ownership. The bottom line is – it is extremely difficult. Happy Holidays! With time off (hopefully) in the not-so-distant future, it is important that your patients AND team are prepared for any holiday closure time. Patients should ideally be made aware of any practice closures in advance. Emails, texts, or custom recorded voicemails are the best way to ensure that patients know you are closed AND know what to do if they have a dental emergency. Your team also needs to know the expectations for checking email, voicemail, and text messages while the practice is closed. Episode Summary This week on Dental Drill Bits, Dana and Sandy open up about real-world customer service experiences that prove just how important it is to put yourself in the patient's shoes. Dana kicks things off with her eye doctor visit, from tiny-font registration forms to confusing waiting rooms and perfume-passing that crossed the line. She then shares what her tire appointment taught her about easing patient anxiety and making sure customers leave with confidence. Sandy brings her own story to the table about trying to buy fireplace logs, only to be talked out of making the purchase by the very person answering the phone. Together, they explore what it means to honor the customer's current concern, anticipate their questions, and create experiences that build trust. If you've ever wondered how the smallest details can make or break customer loyalty, this episode will make you rethink every touchpoint in your practice. Key Takeaways Always imagine yourself in the customer's position—what feels confusing vs. reassuring? Honor the customer's current concern, even if you think they need something else. Anticipate wants, questions, and needs before the customer even asks. Every interaction is an opportunity to build confidence—or lose it.

What if you could double or even triple your dental practice's profitability without working more hours? The secret lies in understanding and optimizing your dollar-per-hour production. Most dentists unknowingly operate practices that generate around $300 for every 40 minutes of work when they could be making $1,500 in that same time frame. This profound difference doesn't just impact your income—it transforms every aspect of practice ownership, from stress levels to management decisions to work-life balance.Take Control of Your Practice and Your Life We help dentists take more time off while making more money through systematization, team empowerment, and creating leadership teams. In this episode of Dental Drill Bits, Sandy Pardue and Dana Salisbury tackle one of the most dreaded times in the dental calendar: “Sucktember.” As kids go back to school and cancellations rise, many practices see their production slump, but it doesn't have to be that way. Sandy shares why mindset matters more than market trends, how to uncover hundreds of patients hiding in your own software, and why reactivation projects can both fill your schedule and boost team morale. From calling patients who haven't been in for years to creating fun staff incentives, you'll discover proven strategies that transform September into Success-tember (and set you up for Rocktober). If you're ready to stop the slump and finish the year strong, this is an episode you won't want to miss. Takeaways: Your mindset shapes your results: stop expecting September to “suck.” Patient reactivation projects reveal hundreds of opportunities already in your database. Most patients who haven't been in still believe you're their dentist — reach out. Consistency in outreach creates predictable schedules. Boost team morale by gamifying reactivation with small rewards. Increased outflow (calls, texts, emails, mailers) is the key to saving your September.

Dental practice owners across the country are facing a critical challenge: how to continue growing when hygienists seem impossible to find. This shortage creates a frustrating bottleneck - you've got the new patients flowing in, your clinical skills are sharp, your systems are solid, but without adequate hygiene capacity, your practice hits a growth ceiling that feels impenetrable. The mathematics behind this problem are straightforward but concerning. A full-time hygienist seeing seven patients daily for four days weekly can accommodate 672 patients on a six-month recall schedule. For practices bringing in 80-100 new patients monthly with strong reappointment rates, a single hygienist reaches capacity within just eight months. This reality forces practice owners to make difficult decisions about resource allocation.Beyond simply raising compensation to attract scarce hygiene talent (though that may be necessary), savvy practice owners are deploying creative solutions: becoming more selective about recalls and building robust ASAP lists; extending recall intervals beyond the traditional six months for appropriate patients; restructuring patient flow to route new patients directly through doctor exams with same-day dentistry opportunities; and implementing assisted hygiene models to increase capacity. Each approach has merits and challenges, but combining these strategies can help practices continue growing despite staffing limitations.Remember that transparency with patients about industry-wide staffing challenges helps manage expectations, and consider that new patients often represent a population with greater immediate treatment needs than established patients who already receive regular care. By implementing these five practical solutions, you can continue growing your practice, serving your community effectively, and maintaining the profitability that supports your ideal lifestyle.Ready to implement systems that create freedom and profitability in your practice?
