Connie's motivational quote for today is by – Nicole Snow, “A small business is an amazing way to serve and leave an impact on the world you live in.” When I started my career 40 years ago, I had no network. I didn't even know why I needed to build a network of people who I could get to know and ultimately be able to help them. Wow, what an incredible journey of learning why people matter so much in business and why showing up in a caring and loving way matters! My guest and I will explore this topic of understanding why paying forward generates new business opportunities and provide an introduction from Presidents and Owners of Companies like Magic. You have the power to create this type of dynamic relationship by giving first? Yup, that's it, just giving first! The Organization that we talked about today is Camp Kids are Kids Chicago.(Link: https://campkidsarekids.org/donate/). Every year our camp gives kids who are undergoing cancer treatment a chance to experience camp in an Urban environment. This year two major hotels, The Palmer House and The Drake will give up rooms to support campers, siblings and the Doctors, Nurses, Counselors and Staff who will stay with our kids and give of their services for free. Hotel furniture will be removed, bunk beds installed and campers and their support team will have an opportunity to experience Camp. YouTube: https://youtu.be/sPCTaJhzQC8 About Morris J. Elstien: Most of his business career has been in Chicago. After attending Indiana University, his three first positions were with Owens Illinois, Kraft Foods, and Maremont Corporation. He became a consultant in the Direct Mail Industry and eventually became President for 13 years. He took a leap of faith and took on a position with no pay but 33 and a 3rd percent ownership. He bought out his partners after a year and a half, grew the Company to 87 employees, and sold it 16 years ago. Morris recently started MorrieConnect, teaching Presidents/Owners and C-Suites his methodology of paying it forward. How to Get In Touch with Morris J. The Unconventional Path: Entrepreneurship and Innovation Stories and Ideas With Bela and Mike
This week we have a special episode of our podcast. To start off the 2021 New Year, Mike and I have looked over our 100+ episodes and pick the ones we think are the most interesting or thought-provoking. We also want to thank all of our super guests and you, our listeners. In the 2 plus years, we have been doing this podcast, we have had over 17,000 listens all around the world. From the United States to Sweden to Saudi Arabia to India to Uganda. It has been a load of fun and we have certainly garnered many insights from our guests. Bela: One of the episodes that stands out to me is EP-95 with Mike Saccocio. He is the executive director of the city mission in Schenectady, New York. The creativity, energy, and compassion that Mike has helped so many people. I was fascinated to learn how Mike took a negative, ie. having a homeless shelter in your neighborhood, and turned it into a positive with the downtown ambassador program. Just pure genius. A complete win-win. So check out EP-95 with Mike Saccocio Mike: My favorite topic has been organizational culture and two episodes that really helped me better understand entrepreneurial culture were David Dussault and Darrin Jahnel. David was our guest in EP-2 and is the CEO of P1 Industries, which is a precision mechanical component manufacturing company. And Darrin Jahnel was featured in both EP-5 and EP-84. Darrin is the Co-Founder of Jahnel Group, a software development company. Darrin was on the show twice so, that in itself says something. I was really impressed with how both David and Darrin focused on their company culture, It is reflected in everything they do, their management style, company functions, and meetings, hiring practices, and opportunities for employee growth. Many founders talk about culture, but very few do anything about it. We can all learn something from these two founders. Give them a listen on EP-2, 5, and 84. Bela: The next one I have is EP-27 with Euwyn Poon the founder of Spin. Spin partners with cities, college and corporate campuses, and businesses to provide dockless scooter-share services to get you where you need to go. I had several key take-a-ways from this episode. Euwyn spoke about how he looks at the VC's who invest in his company. He is hiring them! He looks at what the VC's bring to the table in addition to money. What connections do they have? What skills and experience do they have? How can they help him grow his business? Euwyn also discusses how he wanted to be at the epicenter of the start-up universe. He wanted to be where all the action is, the talent is, because he fletch this was the best environment for success. Mike: One thing I am really focusing on right now in my teaching is trying to influence issues of gender inequality in the startup world. The data are really concerning, so I have been actively trying to explore my own teaching, coaching, and mentoring to try and make sure opportunities are not being unintentionally blocked for women entrepreneurs. So, I really like EP-10 with Charlotte Hayden and EP-11 with Nicole Snow. You know Charlotte and I think there is a good story about inspiration, taking actionable steps, seeking mentors and advisors. For Nicole, I think it's all about building a customer community. Both are great stories that are worth listening to. This has been a fun episode to put together. What a great way to kick off what we hope is a better 2021 for all of us after all the challenges we faced in 2020! We love to hear from our listeners, send us your questions, comments, and suggestions at bela.and.mike@gmail.com - we will answer your questions in a future episode. Nicole Snow is the founder and CEO of Darn Good Yarn, an online ethical yarn and clothing store. After leaving the Air Force, Nicole worked at a paper company before starting her own general import business. Two years later, she wanted to launch a new venture with a focus on social consciousness. Using her passion for arts, textures, colors, and her supply chain management experience from her time in the Air Force, she created Darn Good Yarn. The company started from her bedroom during the last recession in 2008 and finished the fiscal year with $9.1m in revenue last year. Her company is a conduit to create sustainable employment for over 600 Indian and Nepalese artisans and has eight US employees. Today, Nicole shares her journey into the sustainable business world and the lessons she learned as the business grew. She discusses how she managed her finances early on and how this changed when the company expanded. She expands on her decision to become a social entrepreneur and why any business needs to be careful about growing too quickly. She shares her tips on driving sales to your online business and why everything doesn't need to be polished to work. She also shares how you can focus online ads to be more effective and how entering business competitions can help entrepreneurs in the business journey. Knitting, sewing and other skills have long been categorized as women’s work. Usually, if something is deemed “a woman’s job,” my rebellious inclination is to shun it entirely. But what if we look at this a little differently, as something that’s empowering for women. These activities provide a way for us to work creatively with our hands, but also connect us with the generations of artistic, yarn-slinging women who came before us. When clicking two knitting needles together, we can reflect on more than a stitch, bringing art to life while celebrating a creative skill that women have been total masters of for centuries. The post Nicole Snow: She’s Spinning Darn Good Yarn appeared first on On The Dot Woman.
In early 2008, Nicole Snow decided to take two of her passions in life—art and helping others—and combine them. The result was “Darn Good Yarn”. The mission was simple: provide phenomenal quality fibers to enthusiasts, while helping the women of Nepal and India become autonomous and self-reliant. Listen Live for chance to win great prizes!
