Yvonne and Mitchel is an upcycled fashion brand that gives old clothes new life. Caylin Yvonne Willis and Jared Mitchel Armstrong created the brand in 2017 after they met in college and bonded over their love for thrifting and personal style. Jared was going to school to get a degree in health sciences but longed to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a designer, while Caylin was studying journalism and looking to start her own clothing business. Although the couple isn't professionally trained in fashion, they decided to merge their talents and launched an online vintage clothing store through Instagram in 2017. After Jared taught himself how to sew three years later, they started transforming their thrift finds into one-of-a-kind, upcycled garments. Yvonne and Mitchel is owned and operated by Jared and Caylin out of Kansas City, Missouri, USA. The couple handles every aspect of the business themselves: sourcing, designing, sewing, modeling, photography, marketing, etc. 100% of the fabrics that are used to make Yvonne and Mitchel's upcycled garments — and 99% of the shipping materials they're packaged in — are sourced from local thrift shops and recycling centers. Lottie Bertello has always grown up with fashion in her life. She comes from an artistic family and was always encouraged and supported in her interest in textiles and fashion. As a native of Peru, where textiles are a big part of the cultural heritage, Lottie has always valued textiles, and pursued an education in fashion from high school through college. She, like so many others in the industry, became disillusioned with fast fashion and its low emphasis on creativity and the value of artisinal labor and of quality raw materials. The only part of fashion she still loved was thrifting! So naturally, Lottie became interested in upcycling and alternative material and labor issues. She started her fashion label LOTI, which caters mostly to femme fashion and endeavors to bring upcycled clothing into mainstream fashion. Her three main goals for every garment are for them to be Comfortable, Effortless, and Elegant. In addition, the company is based in Peru and everything is done in Peru, which is important to Lottie in terms of social and labor issues as well as sustainability issues (did you know alpaca fiber is much more sustainable than cashmere!?). And here she is! Our guest for Episode 31 of the Rags to Riches Podcast! (AND a speaker at our recent Rags to Riches Textile Upcycling Summit!)
