Conflict Resilience: Negotiating Disagreement Without Giving Up or Giving In by Robert Bordone, Joel Salinas M.D. Conflictresiliencebook.com Amazon.com Two former Harvard faculty—one an internationally-recognized negotiator and conflict management expert from Harvard Law, the other a leading behavioral neurologist and cutting-edge scientist from Harvard Med—join forces to introduce conflict resilience: the radical act of sitting in and growing from conflict to break the bad habits that sabotage our politics, workplaces, and most important relationships. Conflict is getting the better of us. From our homes and community centers to C-Suites and Congress, disagreements are happening everywhere, with increasing frequency, and are being treated like zero-sum games that allow little margin for error and even less room for productive conversations. This puts a tremendous and untenable strain on our most important relationships and institutions. Unable or unwilling to negotiate conflict with skill, we ignore it or avoid it for as long as possible; when we are forced to face it, we escalate everyday disagreements and temporary flare-ups as if they're life-and-death. Neither approach addresses underlying issues, promotes stronger relationships, or yields satisfying results. But there is a solution: a combined skillset and mindset that Bob Bordone calls “conflict resilience”—the ability to sit genuinely with and grow from disagreement. In this powerful, hopeful book, he and renowned neurologist Joel Salinas, MD, combine the inner mechanics of conflict—literally what's going on in our bodies and our brains during moments of distress—with a groundbreaking three-step framework for how to navigate it: NAME (& dig deep) EXPLORE (& be brave) COMMIT (& own the conflict) In a time of increasing polarization, where consensus, agreement, and problem-solving can sometimes feel elusive, Conflict Resilience provides practical solutions to a common dilemma: How do you handle disagreements and differences with integrity while finding a way to create strong, deep, and lasting relationships? Conflict Resilience is not another book about conflict resolution, nor is it about problem solving. Conflict Resilience combines practical applications of advanced conflict management and study of the human brain to teach anyone how to turn conflict and negotiation into an act of union. This book provides the most cutting-edge and scientifically-grounded tools for driving agreement when possible and for empowering you to disagree better when the differences cut deep and the relationships matter most. This is a chance to bring people together, and an invitation to radically transform how we interact with our friends and families, our co-workers, our students, and our neighbors—anyone with whom we find ourselves in disagreement.

Are you on the board of directors of a company? Or are you a shareholder of a publicly traded company? Or are you a CEO or a CFO or in-house counsel who reports to a board of directors or these shareholders? Well, this show is for you. And it's about how the healthcare industry has become financialized at the same time that providing health benefits has become the second-biggest line item after payroll for most companies. We talked about that in a recent encore with Mark Cuban (EP418) also, as well as the show with Cora Opsahl (EP452) and Claire Brockbank (EP453) from 32BJ. For a full transcript of this episode, click here. If you enjoy this podcast, be sure to subscribe to the free weekly newsletter to be a member of the Relentless Tribe. So, this encore with Andreas Mang is really timely. And even if you've listened to the show when it originally aired a year ago, you may want to take another listen, because in the context of these recent shows, this one really slots right in there. And also, by the way, the one with Julie Selesnick (EP428) from last year talking about the legal jeopardy currently in play. So, this show isn't really about health benefits; it's about the business that these health benefits have become and how, if the CEO or CFO of an employer is not intimately involved in the financial layer wrapping around health benefits, then the company is getting really taken advantage of by those entities who are intimately familiar with the financial layer surrounding those healthcare benefits. And the employees of that company also are getting equally taken advantage of. This is not a case where paying more or less results in better or worse employee health or healthcare. It is a case where not minding the shop in the C-suite means that financial actors just take more of the pie and nobody wins but them. Employer loses; employee loses. Andreas Mang, my guest today, kicks off this interview talking about the conversation that will go down between himself and any CEO whose company gets bought by Blackstone. So, if you're a CEO and you're aspiring for this to happen, yeah … heads up. But he says it's kind of an unnatural act to dig into anything that smells like health benefits or health insurance. Some may not even realize that this whole financial layer has developed that sits above the healthcare benefits themselves. And they also may not think that there's anything that's possible that can be done. As far as both of these points are concerned, Andreas Mang gives a list of, as he calls them, easy things a C-suite can do to save 10% while improving employee satisfaction and health. Saving 10% or more, this can be a really big number. A lot of this is just enforcing purchasing discipline that is being used elsewhere. Here's Andreas's list recapped: 1. Have CFO engagement throughout the year. (We talked about that with Mark Cuban also.) 2. Be self-insured once you have reached a certain size. (Andreas gets into this in more detail during the show itself.) 3. Be very, very careful who you hire as your broker or benefits consultant. There are five things that need to be true: · They have the experience to do the job. · Flat-fee model compensation · No product pushing · Fees at risk (30% or more) · Simple termination provisions 4. Do carrier/ASO/TPA RFPs once every three years or thereabouts. 5. Do dependent eligibility audits. (Cora Opsahl talked a lot about this also in an earlier episode [EP372].) 6. Leverage pharmacy coalitions and stop-loss collectives. (In the show itself, Andreas offers some warnings because some of these coalitions and collectives are great and some are not.) But bottom line, just keep in mind, as Mark Cuban said (EP418), those that are taking your money, your company's money, are advantaged when you are confused. Where there's mystery, there's margin. If you can't convince 'em, confuse 'em and all that. This is a business strategy. Healthcare should not be this complicated. But yet, it has become so; and anyone who doesn't realize that is letting themselves and their employees really get taken advantage of. Unknown unknowns are not benign. As I have said several times already, Andreas Mang is my guest today. He is a partner at Blackstone, the private equity and alternative asset manager. His job is helping portfolio companies manage their U.S. healthcare benefits for their employees. Also mentioned in this episode are Blackstone, Mark Cuban, Cora Opsahl, Claire Brockbank, Julie Selesnick, Lauren Vela, and Tom Nash. You can learn more at Blackstone and by connecting with Andreas on LinkedIn. Andreas Mang is senior managing director, portfolio operations, and chief executive officer of Equity Healthcare, where he is involved in managing medical benefits spend across the Blackstone portfolio. Andreas brings 20 years of healthcare experience to Equity Healthcare, having held various roles in healthcare finance, operations, and strategy. Prior to joining Blackstone, Andreas was the vice president responsible for national provider network operations at CareCentrix, a PE-backed, leading home health benefit-management company. At Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, he held a variety of roles, including a leadership role identifying and implementing administrative cost savings opportunities throughout the organization and ultimately designing a new corporate business model. In addition, he held roles as the manager of strategic financial planning at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and was a senior consultant with Deloitte Consulting's Strategy and Operations group in Boston. Andreas has a bachelor's degree in healthcare management and policy from the University of New Hampshire and an MBA from the University of Rochester's Simon School of Business Administration. He currently serves on the board of DECA Dental. 04:55 Why Andreas starts every conversation with the question, “How's your healthcare company?” 07:38 Why is it important, as a self-insured employer, to treat your business as a small healthcare company? 09:16 Why is it unnatural for companies to be providing health insurance? 10:47 What can be achieved when there is alignment between employers and insurers? 12:41 What things can a company do to reduce spend by 10%? 14:14 Why is it better to have CFO engagement in the benefits plan throughout the year? 16:25 Why does self-insurance save 5% to 9% for companies automatically? 18:14 “The funding isn't a healthcare thing; it's a CFO thing.” 18:27 Why is it vital to have a reliable, trustworthy broker? 25:12 When is the last time your company has RFP'd their health plan? 27:39 Why does changing a health plan feel scary but is necessary? 28:31 What is a dependent eligibility audit? 31:20 Why are employers better together? 34:34 How do employers truly get a flat-fee model with brokers? You can learn more at Blackstone and by connecting with Andreas on LinkedIn. Runday AI Presents AI and Producer Margins with Matt Sauer July 25 About Guest: Matt Sauer, Chairman, Everstar Asset Management / matt-sauer-069724131 About Matt: Having spent over 35 years evaluating and pricing assets, Matthew has been keenly aware that valuation is always based on data gathering, assimilation and analysis. Artificial Intelligence will fundamentally change the available data, the traditional investment process and the outcomes associated with investing. The dispersion of results will become larger at a faster pace, all because of the power of Artificial Intelligence. Beginning with a career as a portfolio manager at three well known investment firms; Oak Value, Ariel, and Lateef, he has visited hundreds of C-Suites and has had numerous conversations with industry leaders, investment bankers and analysts. Different industries will be affected by Artificial Intelligence based on their own idiosyncratic risks and rewards of disruptive technologies, yet it is the combination of the knowledge of traditional business models and the understanding of the rate and magnitude of change occurring that allows for insightful analysis and valuation work. While at Oak Value, Matthew was named by Morningstar Research as an All-Star Manager and an Ultimate Stock Picker. Matthew has been a General Partner in Lateef Capital LLP and Everstar Capital Fund LLC. The latter has significantly outperformed all benchmarks over the past 4 years. #AIFinance #ProducerMargins #artificialintelligence #inspirational #aiinnovation #techtalks #RundayAIPresents #MattSauer #EverstarAssetManagement #finance #producer #ai #interview

Why are there so few women in the CEO seat? We know that diverse C-Suites are more resilient, innovative, and drive better financial performance. But in 2023, women accounted for only 12% of CEO appointments globally. Based on the current rate of progress, public companies are 81 years from gender parity in CEO appointments. Change needs to happen—and fast. So, how do you best develop high-potential women leaders? What does an optimal CEO succession plan within an organization need to look like to support the movement of women into the top seat? And, what can you do to retain women CEOs? In this episode of Leadership Lounge, we talk to some of our trusted leadership advisors—Margot McShane, Hetty Pye, and Shannon Knott—who share their perspectives on how to help close the gender gap. We also discuss RRA Artemis, our brand-new CEO accelerator program aimed at expediting more women to the top of organizations. Tune in to discover the importance of switching your succession planning from an opt-out to an opt-in approach, why assessing for potential rather than experience is critical when identifying future CEOs, and why organizations need to rethink the traditional route to the top seat.
For four years now, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, or DEI, has been a priority in C-Suites everywhere. Not only is it considered the right thing to do, but to do business in the corporate, nonprofit, or government sectors, a clear, actionable DEI policy has been a necessity. However, in recent months, there has been a softening of that stance, which led us to wonder “Is DEI Still a Priority? Cyber has been an historically hermetic practice. A dark art. Full of mysteries and presided over by magicians both good and bad. This is a bit of an exaggeration, yet there is some truth to it. Many in our industry knew that the SEC was evaluating the role that cyber risk management and incident disclosure plays in the pricing mechanism for an equity. Many of the participants in GRC, IRM, and Cyber Risk anticipated this before the SEC had even proposed such rules. Boards, C-Suites, and Information security teams within publicly traded companies brought it up occasionally in the year preceding its adoption. Lawyers on K Street actively advocated in the press against enacting such rules, and there is still a hearty back and forth concerning the merits of SEC involvement in cyber risk. But more transparency is a very welcome development. For investors, it's essential. Industry veterans say that this development hearkens back to Sarbanes Oxley, which had very big implications for Governance, Risk, and Compliance. This is likely cyber risk's SOX moment, and the drop date is December 15th of this year on all 10-K filings. The SEC will not look kindly upon boilerplate disclosures, particularly if a cyber attack with significant losses occurs. So where do you start? This segment is sponsored by CyberSaint . For a full transcript of this episode, click here. Are you on the board of directors of a company? Or are you a shareholder of a publicly traded company? Or are you a CEO or a CFO who reports to a board of directors or these shareholders? Well, this show is for you. And it's about how the healthcare industry has become financialized at the same time that providing health benefits has become the second-biggest line item after payroll for most companies. We talked about that with Mark Cuban (EP418) also. (Cora Opsahl talked a lot about this also in an episode [EP372] last summer.) 6. Leverage pharmacy coalitions and stop-loss collectives. (In the show itself, Andreas offers some warnings because some of these coalitions and collectives are great and some are not.) But bottom line, just keep in mind, as Mark Cuban said two weeks ago (EP418), those that are taking your money, your company's money, are advantaged when you are confused. His job is helping portfolio companies manage their US healthcare benefits for their employees. 04:19 Why Andreas starts every conversation with the question, “How's your healthcare company?” 07:04 Why is it important, as a self-insured employer, to treat your business as a small healthcare company? 08:42 Why is it unnatural for companies to be providing health insurance? 10:13 What can be achieved when there is alignment between employers and insurers? 12:07 What things can a company do to reduce spend by 10%? 13:40 Why is it better to have CFO engagement in the benefits plan throughout the year? 15:51 Why does self-insurance save 5% to 9% for companies automatically? 17:41 “The funding isn't a healthcare thing; it's a CFO thing.” 17:54 Why is it vital to have a reliable, trustworthy broker? 24:38 When is the last time your company has RFP'd their health plan? 27:06 Why does changing a health plan feel scary but is necessary? 27:58 What is a dependent eligibility audit? 30:48 Why are employers better together? 34:02 How do employers truly get a flat-fee model with brokers? You can learn more at Blackstone and by connecting with Andreas on LinkedIn. It Can Be Loney at the Top - But C-Suite Coaching Cards Can Help Join C-Suite Coach, Kim Randall and our very own Darren Smith, as they talk about support for C-Suite (executive-level managers). Face it, sometimes it gets lonely at the top, especially when everyone is rushing to you for support. Explore Kim's passion for delving into the human side of leaders, helping them to connect with who they are as a person as well as a leader. If you're a leader or want to offer support, make sure to check out this podcast. You Can Read the Full C-Suite Transcript Below: Darren A. Smith: Hello. You're at a podcast. Welcome to the world's stickiest learning. We're with Kim Randall and also Pudding who you're stroking there. Kim-Adele Randall: I am to try and get him to not join in. I think he might be the more vocal of the two of us this morning. Darren A. Smith: It's probably true. That's probably true. The title of our podcast is where Do C-Suites go to for support now? I'm joined by Kim, who is a C-Suite coach. Is that right? Kim-Adele Randall: It is. Darren A. Smith: OK, now in the nicest possible way. Kim, I'm going to ask you, why should we listen to you about this? Kim-Adele Randall: Great question, Darren. So I guess for me, I started off as in C-Suite and was there for a number of years. And then when I became a mum, I decided that I could have a bigger impact by coaching of the C-Suite leaders. Having been there and realised that it might be lonely at the top, but it's certainly not quiet. Everyone is looking to you for the answer. Everyone expects you to always be on your game. People forget that our cease suite leaders are people 1st and leaders second and we are all perfectly imperfect. We have things that go wrong in our lives. We don't always know the answer. Darren A. Smith: True. Kim-Adele Randall: We're not always feeling like we're firing on all cylinders and so if we can, when we understand the human side of that C-Suite, that was one of my passions as part of my purpose, which is how do we help those C-Suite leaders connect with who they are as a person as well as who they are as a leader and give them that support? Because no human being in the world can survive without support for long. And it's this way you think the phrase comes from lonely at the top. I think so, yeah. Because when you get to the top, you both from. From my own experience and also from, you know, coaching at hundreds of other C-Suite leaders, one of the things that is so common throughout is we all fear becoming irrelevant. Kim-Adele Randall: And when you get to the very top, you know that everybody wants your job. You're doing one of you, so there's nowhere to go. So actually all you are is hanging on for dear life until somebody comes to step into those shoes and that is that plays in, in their head. It's that, you know, am I still adding value? Am I still relevant? Am I still doing stuff? Cause where do you go for your help? You can't. If you have those moments of doubt, we all have them. You know, in Process syndrome hits us all at some point in our life, you kind of go well, where, where, where do I go? Darren A. Smith: True. True again. Kim-Adele Randall: So I'm having this moment of doubt and I can't go to my direct reports because they're one looking to me for support and equally looking for any element of weakness so that they might be able to take and I can't go to the board because they might doubt my confidence or credibility and therefore you know that might have ramifications. So where do I go in those moments? Where I need to get out of my own head and we all know that we all have blind spots for the reason we're blind to them. Kim-Adele Randall: So no amount of looking at ourselves in the mirror is going to highlight those blind spots. What we need is a sometimes a sounding board, sometimes a trusted advisor, sometimes just a safe space where I don't know if you've ever had these moments, Darren,

Connie's motivational quote for today is by – Nicole Snow, “A small business is an amazing way to serve and leave an impact on the world you live in.” When I started my career 40 years ago, I had no network. Wow, what an incredible journey of learning why people matter so much in business and why showing up in a caring and loving way matters! My guest and I will explore this topic of understanding why paying forward generates new business opportunities and provide an introduction from Presidents and Owners of Companies like Magic. A startling 6.6% of Fortune 500 companies have women as their CEOs and only 23% of C-Suites are made up of women. Such statistics show that gender bias is prevalent despite increased traction and awareness around diversity, equity, and inclusion. While progress is slow, thankfully, it is not stagnant. Many businesses receive questions about the lack of diversity within their organization and what they are doing to fix it. In this episode, Jack speaks with three wealthtech legends: Noreen Beaman, Vice Chair Board of Directors at Orion Advisor Solutions, Lori Hardwick, Board Director at Cetera, Orion, and Cerity Partners and Board Chair at Vestwell and Docupace, and Cheryl Nash, Chief Executive Officer of Financial Supermarket at InvestCloud. The three discuss important themes that have led to their professional wins: embracing challenges, trusting your instinct, working hard, and surrounding yourself with a strong support system. Lori, Cheryl, and Noreen talk with Jack about the evolution of their careers, their advice for women in wealthtech, and their thoughts on where the industry is headed. You should ask that your firms are measuring diversity, not just gender, and that you reward those who take it seriously and do the right things to keep women and diverse candidates and grow them.” ~ Cheryl Nash [33:24] - “I had someone tell me just a couple months ago, ‘you wrote your own story. In this episode, Mariana speaks with Alejandra Palacios, former head of Mexico's Economic Competition Commission, COFECE, and Luis Gutierrez, President for Latin America of Prologis, the world's largest industrial real estate investment trust and the biggest owner of industrial parks in Mexico. They discuss why Mexico's manufacturing sector is receiving record numbers of FDI, in what specific sectors could Mexico increase its share in U.S. manufacturing imports, and what is needed for industrial park supply to catch up with increased demand. They also speak about the main constraints that exist to allow Mexico to take full advantage of this moment and how despite the current unfriendly political environment, C-Suites from around the world are focusing on long term geopolitical trends and moving ahead with their plans to shift a piece of their manufacturing capacity down to Mexico.
Sam and Emma host Julia Rock, staff reporter at The Lever, to discuss her recent reporting on the Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, as well as recent meetings surrounding restaurant union negotiations. Then, they're joined by Suzanne Nossel, CEO of PENAmerica, to discuss the organization's efforts to combat censorship efforts at the state level by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Dianne Feistein's tentative retirement, Arizona's Nitric Acid spill, Idaho's ban on gender-affirming care, Oklahoma stripping a Lesbian mom of her parental rights, and the GOP getting upset over the FTC doing its job, before diving deeper into the House Republican's frantic search for SOMETHING to cut, as the Senate GOP takes defense (even the woke stuff), social security, and medicare off of the table. Julie Rock then joins as she dives right into the recent regulatory debacle in East Palestine, walking through the last decade of deregulation of the freight rail industry, an age dubbed the “buyback era” by workers as their employers purchased stocks for the C-Suite while cutting spending on infrastructure, inspections, and workforce and safety redundancy, before looking to the role of lobbying in ensuring this deregulation, focusing particularly on the freight industry's promotion of a mechanical break upgrade, only to turn around and object to any attempt to regulate the implementation of these breaks while carrying hazardous products, successfully having the Trump administration repeal the requirements while Pete Buttigieg has continued to lag on its reimplementation. Rock then shifts to her recent experiences sitting in on a National Restaraunt Association conference where NLRB General Council spoke on her agency's crackdown on union-busting tactics in the industry, the fear held by C-Suites nationwide of Gen-Z labor organizing, and the tactics the corporations are looking to employ moving forwards. Next, Suzanne Nossel parses through how her work on censorship has progressed over the last decade, shifting from hyper-localized protests by parents to a full-scale legislative assault from state governments, walking through the myriad education-based restrictions coming out of Governor DeSantis' office in Florida and the massive difference between interpersonal disputes over speech and authoritarianism at the invocation of the state, before wrapping up the interview by tackling the specifics of the College Board's battle over AP African American history. And in the Fun Half: Sma and Emma discuss Minnesota's trans refuge bill, what it can do to fight back against the gender-affirming care bans cropping up across the US, and parse through Tim Pool running coverage for both the corporations and regulators responsible for East Palestine's chemical catastrophe, which Dion from Kentucky helps them expand on. Patrick from LA then walks Sam and Emma through an extended Men's Rights hypothetical that begins with reproductive rights for all pronouns and ends with balancing the rights of courageous men with those of blue-haired cows (women), plus, your calls and IMs! If you're an automotive enthusiast I'm sure you've heard of today's guest Matt Farah. I'm confident in saying his channel The Smoking Tire inspired countless people to make car videos for YouTube, and though he didn't invent the business model for Car Storage, he's certainly made a name for himself in the space. It was at his offices within Westside Collector Car Storage where Matt welcomed and hosted me so we could record this episode. The level of hospitality is immediately felt when entering the building, and given the fact Matt's father held several seats in the C Suites of some of the largest luxury brands on the planet, it doesn't take long to understand why. We chat about Matt's upbringing, his cars - both that he owns and those he's sold. On top of that, Matt's been a watch collector for the better part of a decade, so of course we explore his relationships within the space of Horology, as well. This was a fun one, and to boot, Matt extended the invitation to use his equipment and film the show! I can't thank Matt enough for the hospitality and the time, it was truly a pleasure. If you'd like to watch this interview, it's available on the STANDARD H YouTube channel, as well as on the STANDARD H website. As always thank you for the support, and I hope you enjoy this episode.
