Nearly fifty years after the end of the war in Vietnam, American children of Vietnamese refugees continue to process the meanings of the war and its consequences through creative work. Displacing Kinship: The Intimacies of Intergenerational Trauma in Vietnamese American Cultural Production (Temple UP, 2024) examines how Vietnamese American cultural productions register lived experiences of racism in their depictions of family life and marginalization. Second-generation texts illustrate how the children of refugees from Vietnam are haunted by trauma and a violent, ever-present, but mostly unarticulated past. Linh Thủy Nguyễn's analysis reveals that present experiences of economic insecurity and racism also shape these narratives of familial loss. Developing a theory of intergenerational trauma, Nguyễn rethinks how U.S. imperialism, the discourse of communism, and assimilation impacted families across generations. Through ethnic studies and feminist and queer-of-color critique, Displacing Kinship offers a critical approach for reading family tensions and interpersonal conflict as affective investments informed by the material, structural conditions of white supremacy and racial capitalism. She was recently featured in an interview regarding her monograph with Toward Inclusive Excellence (TIE) of Choice, apublishing unit of the Association of College and Research Libraries. fWotD Episode 2837: Japanese battleship Tosa Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Sunday, 9 February 2025 is Japanese battleship Tosa.Tosa (土佐) was a planned battleship of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Designed by Yuzuru Hiraga, Tosa was to be the first of two Tosa-class ships. Displacing 39,900-long-ton (40,540 t) and armed with ten 410 mm (16.1 in) guns, these warships would have brought Japan closer to its goal of an "Eight-four" fleet (eight battleships and four battlecruisers). All work on the ship was halted after the Washington Naval Conference and the signing of the Washington Naval Treaty. As the vessel had to be destroyed in accordance with the terms of the treaty, it was subjected to various tests to gauge the effectiveness of Japanese weaponry before being scuttled on 9 February 1925.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:35 UTC on Sunday, 9 February 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Japanese battleship Tosa on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Ivy.

Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, CA 2F4 The Feast of the Presentation 11 a.m. Eucharist Sunday 2 February 2025 | Displacing 4 Epiphany Malachi 3:1-4 Psalm 24:7-10 Hebrews 2:14-18 Luke 2:22-40 What exactly is a sermon? What are we doing together and what do we hope happens? This might seem like an unimportant question to ask. In the last two weeks 1500 January 6 rioters were pardoned or had their sentences commuted and many wonder if right-wing militias now regard themselves as immune to prosecution. $3 trillion dollars in federal grants were frozen and then unfrozen. A letter went out to 2 million federal employees (twice) asking them to resign. Hundreds of other government employees including civil servants at the highest level of our justice system have been fired. 25% tariffs are being imposed on our closest neighbors and trading partners. We see preparations for mass deportations. We hear ominously repeated phrases like,“defending women from gender ideology extremism,” and, “restoring biological truth to the federal government.” The trans people in our congregation, among our clergy, and across the land are being singled out, when they are just the sort of humans Jesus loved the most and sought to defend. “O God we long for your truth. Let your spirit help us to understand what we believe.”

Atlanta-based Delta Airlines is having a harder time than most overcoming the 'Crowdstrike' update glitch, and now the Department of Transportation wants answers after some intense passenger struggles this past week. All this has me exasperated as to why we (you and I) let ourselves get to this point. Folks are sleeping on Atlanta's airport floors - in a travel "hub" with no real meaningful rail options to speak of. Which brings me to the Georgia Department of Transportation pitching toll lanes for the top-end of I-285, from Dunwoody to Vinings eventually. Displacing homes and businesses for "just one more lane; that'll fix it!" Why? We need the traffic relief years ago, so if/when complete, it'll be ineffective when complete. Why are we not looking at $9.5 billion for mass transit, again? Kamala Harris gave her first speech as "the" candidate atop the party ticket. Meanwhile, Republicans are busy holding "emergency" oversight hearings into her being President Biden's "border czar," when she never actually was.
Distractions abound in our culture! So often, we are tempted to focus on our comfort and what's easy, instead of what's important and what's best. Misplaced priorities will eventually catch up with us, and even displace the rulership of God in our lives. So, what should our priorities be, and how do we displace our misplaced priorities?
This is the third of three posts leading up to June 2 Worldwide Prodigal Prayer Day. Our theme this year is Fear Not. Some time ago, in the midst of some hopeful signs in a long-ongoing situation, that fear returned. With force. Irrationally. Because when I hoped, when things looked like they were changing for the better, but then maybe they weren't, I became afraid to hope. I remember the past, and it was painful, disappointing, filled with despair. What if, once more, the hope is not fulfilled, if the undesirable wins out again?Do you have a loved one you want prayer for on the June 2 Prodigal Prayer Day? The University of Washington hosts Linh Thủy Nguyễn, non-white female, to discuss her brand new book, Displacing Kinship: The Intimacies of Intergenerational Trauma in Vietnamese American Cultural Production. Gus T. caught a flier for this event, but was more intrigued after investigating Professor Nguyễn's earlier report: “Loving Couples and Families:” Assimilation as Honorary Whiteness and the Making of the Vietnamese Refugee Family. In this 2021 exploration, Nguyễn acknowledges how non-white people born in Vietnam and non-white people classified as Asian at large are positioned in opposition to and apart from non-white people classified as black. Gus felt this was important to acknowledge since there's a frequent assumption that all non-white people are working together to solve The Problem. This point became more salient when Gus attended the event and observed Professor Nguyễn's partner, who appears to be a White Man.
Back in the 60s, BART was just a plan in the making. And located through its path were communities of mostly low income people of color. But thanks to a legal tool known as imminent domain, many in that community were forced to sell their homes or face eviction. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
