“O my people, trust in him at all times. Pour out your heart to him, for God is our refuge.” —Psalm 62:8 Someone once asked me what was the most spiritual moment of my life, the moment when I felt God more than any other time. I had to think about that. Was it the day that I accepted Christ as a 17-year-old on my high school campus? I don't remember that as being an emotional day, but it was the most important day of my life. The day I was baptized in the ocean at Pirate's Cove in Corona del Mar was a little more emotional for me. But that wasn't even the most emotional moment. The day I married Cathe was an emotional day. She was a vision of beauty in her white wedding gown, while I looked like one of the guys from Duck Dynasty in the worst-looking tuxedo ever made. But that was not the most spiritual moment of my life. I realized the most spiritual moment, the moment when I felt Christ more than any other, also was also the worst moment of my life. July 24, 2008, was the day I heard the unspeakable news that my son, Christopher, had died in an automobile accident. I felt like my life had just ended, literally. I didn't think I could go on. But God was with me. With our home filled with people, I went to my office, shut the door, fell down on the floor, and prayed a Job-like prayer. I said, “Lord, You gave me my son, and I give him back to You.” And I experienced the presence of God. God came through for me at that moment, and He is still coming through for me today. He was with me in that time of trial and is still with me. We don't like times of trial in our lives. We don't want times of trial. But God will give us strength when we are in them. --- Listen to Pastor Greg's daily devotional 6 days a week when you download the Harvest app: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/id373393946 Read more and subscribe to get these devotions in your inbox: https://harvest.org/resources/devotion/why-we-can-trust-god/ Support the show: https://harvest.org/support See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“Dealing with Depression” | Sunday Message

We tend to think of people who do big things as invincible—but everyone is susceptible to trials. Even Elijah, who called fire down from Heaven, faced the burden of depression. Pastor Greg Laurie speaks of what to do when your emotions are in disarray. Notes 1. If we want to see God work, we must do our part. Don't wait for the fire of God to fall on you again. You need to repair your altar first. If you have lost the spark, the romance, the love in your marriage, then do loving things again. God is never asleep at the wheel. God is never asleep; He is always watching. “Even atheists have moments of doubt.” —C.S. Lewis “Social media does not bring happiness, it does not bring fulfillment, and it does not bring connection.” —Unknown 2. Our job is to pray. God's job is to answer. Elijah's prayer had no screaming, moaning, or hype. 3. God answers prayer the way He wants and when He wants. Sin will have its pound of flesh! Elijah was the instrument God used to call down the fire. But he was also the man who got depressed. Principles about Dealing with Depression: Times of depression and vulnerability come after great victories. Depression often follows disappointment. Takeaway Truth: After spiritually great moments return to normal again, don't focus on your emotions; focus on God! Don't live in the past; prepare for the future. Principles about Dealing with Depression: When you are depressed, do not isolate but surround yourself with friends. Principles about Dealing with Depression: Don't ignore the practical when you are feeling down. When you are feeling down, you need perspective from God's Word. The Lord spoke to Elijah in a still small voice. Listen for the voice of God in your life. It is time to leave that cave and find God's purpose for your life. Why do Christians have to suffer? As Randy explains, “[God] didn't make the world with all of this suffering. He made it different than that. Then we made some choices—sin—that brought suffering into the world. Now we are living with the consequences. The great thing is, according to the Bible, God doesn't give up. He is still sovereign. He is still in control.” Listen to this fruitful discussion about a necessary topic and be encouraged in your faith! “Angels and Demons” | Greg Laurie on Spiritual Warfare

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 5, 2022 52:00

Although we do not see it, the supernatural world is real, and spiritual battles happen all around us. In this Sunday message, Pastor Greg Laurie gives you biblical insight into the world of angels and demons—and your place in the most important battles. Listen in for a riveting message from Revelation 12.  Notes “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see!” —2 Kings 6:17 Angels are actively involved in the life of the Christian. Acts begins with two angels after Jesus ascended.  It would appear angels are eternal and never die. Angels have a special work and ministry in the life of the Christian. 1. Angels sometimes deliver us from difficult situations.  Angels played a major role in getting Peter out of prison again in Acts 12. 2. Angels sometimes stop us and other times they prompt us. Angels are everywhere in the Bible doing the work of God. The metaverse is not real, but the supernatural world is!  Demons are fallen angels.  3. The Devil. Lucifer came from Heaven. Satan was once a high-ranking angel. Lucifer was not satisfied with worshiping God; he wanted to be worshiped himself. Though Satan lost his once exalted position, he still has access to Heaven. If Satan can't enter in the front, he'll try to get in the back door. If that doesn't work, he'll try to come through the roof or tunnel up under the floor. 4. Satan is not alone, he has a well-organized network of demon powers doing his bidding. 5. The purpose of demons seems to be twofold: They seek to hinder the purposes of God and to extend the power of Satan. 6. Satan knows his days are numbered. 7. Satan does not want you to know that he attacks with accusation.  It's not the bait that constitutes sin; it's the bite!  8. They overcome the devil by the blood of the Lamb.  Our access to God is the result of what Jesus has done for us. At the cross of Calvary, Jesus dealt the decisive blow against Satan and his forces. It is through the blood of the Lamb, I can even approach God and find the help I need. 9. They overcame by the word of their testimony. 10. They did not love their lives to the death. You can be forgiven of your sin!  Satan says “tomorrow” while the Holy Spirit says “Today is the day of salvation.” Angels rejoice when a sinner comes to repentance! Scripture Referenced Acts 1:11 Luke 24:4 Luke 20:36 Hebrews 1:14 Psalm 34:7 Hebrews 13:2 Revelation 22:8 Matthew 12:24 Hebrews 10:19–20 Colossians 2:14 Ephesians 2:13 --- Learn more about Greg Laurie and Harvest Ministries at harvest.org. What the Devil Knows | Some Thoughts from Pastor Greg Laurie

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 4, 2022 1:57

In this special episode, Pastor Greg Laurie shares a few things that the devil knows—and why you should care! Greg Laurie: I know we don't like to talk about him, but it's important to understand our adversary. Let me tell you something that might surprise you about Satan: he is quite “orthodox” in his beliefs. Now let me explain. I'm not suggesting that he's a believer by any stretch of the imagination. Actually, he is the great opponent to God. But for instance, the Bible says the demons believe and tremble. The devil knows and the demons know that God is real. The devil is neither agnostic nor atheist. Number two, the devil believes that Jesus is God, because in the temptation, in the wilderness, he said to Christ, if you're the Son of God turned this rock into a piece of bread, but a better translation would be “Since you're the Son of God . . . .” The devil also believes the Bible is the Word of God. He hates it. He opposes it. But he knows it's true. And he also knows that Jesus is coming back again. We read in Revelation that the devil knows he has a little time. And that is why he is wrecking so much havoc in the last days—and yes, I believe we're living in the last days. So the devil is active, trying to cause trouble, trying to keep people from coming to Christ, trying to cause division among Christians and on the list goes. If the devil and the demons are so motivated to do their dirty work, as Christ is approaching, should we not as Christians be doing as much, if not more? Let's apply ourselves. Jesus is coming. Let's tell someone about Him and engage them in a conversation about Christ. Everyone endures trials in life—even Christians—but Elijah shows us what our response to them should look like. In this episode, Pastor Greg Laurie takes you into 1 Kings 18 with a powerful message on keeping our faith strong. Notes What were the secrets of Elijah's power and boldness? 1. He stood in the presence of God. When you stand in the presence of God, you will not bow before any man. What were the secrets of Elijah's power and boldness? 2. He was a man of prayer (James 5:17). It was Elijah's prayer in private that was the source of his power in public. What were the secrets of Elijah's power and boldness? 3. He knew Scripture and acted on it (Deuteronomy 11:16). What were the secrets of Elijah's power and boldness? 4. He faithfully delivered the message. What were the secrets of Elijah's power and boldness? 5. He was a man of faith and obedience. There is a time to move and a time to wait. God often places His people in significant positions. God has not called us to isolate but to infiltrate. The church is the only hope for America. An idol is not merely an object or statue we bow before; it is anyone or anything that takes the place of God in our lives. You can make yourself god in your life. You can make money god in your life. If the Lord God is number one in your life, everything else will find its proper balance, but if He's not, everything else will be in chaos. Why does God not want us to have any other gods before Him? Answer: “For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God” (Exodus 20:5). Christians trying to live in two worlds are enough into the world to be miserable in God, and enough of God to be miserable in the world. People slash their souls by compromising their integrity to get everyone's attention. God loves you so much, and He wants a relationship with you! God showed His commitment by sending Jesus to die for our sins! Medical Science seeks to add years to your life, but only Jesus will add life to your years. And there is a negative way that it can play out in our lives. But the Bible says, “For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life” (Galatians 6:8 NKJV). The Bible promises rewards — acknowledgment for our faithful service to the Lord. And Jesus said, “And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work” (Revelation 22:12 NKJV). We must do His work. Are you working for the Lord? I'm not referring to working for your salvation, because salvation is a gift from God to you. Ephesians 2:8 tells us, “God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can't take credit for this; it is a gift from God” (NKJV). Because of that, we should want to do something for the Lord, not working for salvation but working from salvation. A faith that works will produce works. A faith that doesn't work won't. The apostle Paul wrote, “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58 NKJV). Jesus often made the statement, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” (Matthew 11:15 NKJV). In other words, “Pay attention to what is being said!” We all know what it's like to tune things out when someone is saying something that we don't want to hear. But when it comes to hearing and obeying God's Word, Jesus is saying, “Tune it in.” The decisions we make and the lifestyle we choose now will impact us in the life to come. --- Learn more about Greg Laurie and Harvest Ministries at harvest.org. Growing up in a Christian home, Cooper always knew he needed Christ. But it took a dramatic turn in a drug-induced haze for him to realize he needed to recommit to Jesus Christ or he was finished. The son and grandson of preachers, Cooper knew who Jesus was and knew that Christianity was true, yet he wanted to walk his own path—a trail that led him to the heights of stardom, partying, and befriending some of the biggest names in show business. Then it all changed. His marriage was falling apart and Cooper was in the pits of alcohol and drug use when he decided to quit and get clean. He began going to church and said that it was the fear of God that brought him around, that he was terrified of Hell. Although fear brought him to the Lord, it was the love of Christ that grew him. The conversation also includes musings by Cooper and Laurie about the so-called “27 Club,” various legends of rock and roll, as well as a discussion about depression, suicide, drugs, alcohol abuse, and their power to destroy.
