In honor of the 20th anniversary of Oceanic Flight 815's crash, we've opened our eyes and are ready to talk about the TV series Lost. We'll start off on the spoiler-free side of the island, giving some general background about this iconic ABC drama and flashing back to our personal experiences with the show. Then, after some time has passed, we'll climb down the spoiler hatch to discuss specific plot points and rank our favorite characters, moments, and episodes. Joel, Kent & Zack, won't answer every question you may still have about Lost, but we'll attempt to clear some black smoke away from the bigger mysteries. And we're going to try to finish this Baconsale episode in less than 4.815162342 hours.   Don't be a purposeful Poochie, press play!

KnockBack: The Retro and Nostalgia Podcast

If you were around and paying attention when Lost aired on ABC, you'll already know that it was a true television phenomenon both in the United States and around the world. Indeed, when it first started running in 2004, it immediately became a 'water cooler'-type show, and it was an especially poignant time to watch something like Lost, because this was pre-streaming, pre-social media, and, for most, pre-DVR. It was appointment viewing. Otherwise, you rented or bought the DVDs when they came out, or hoped to catch a rerun or grab a bad-quality copy from online. And, most importantly, you dodged spoilers as best you could! The mysteries of the crash of Oceanic Flight 815 are at the center of what makes the show so compelling, and so as we begin our six-episode journey through what is perhaps ABC's most famous programming ever, we encourage you to watch along with us. The numbers. The hatch. The Black Rock. Ethan Rom and the Others. The beach craft. Polar bears. Needless to say, this is no ordinary island. Learn more about your ad choices. TV. Watch. Repeat.

Lost showrunner Damon Lindelof once said, "We did 121 hours of Lost. Arguably only 15 to 20 of them were subpar, bordering on turds." While that might be true when it comes to some episodes (Jack's tattoos, anyone?), 'Lost's pilot? It's as damn near as perfect as any two hours of television could be. And it's the subject of our latest episode. 'Lost' had an origin story rivaling the Island itself. An idea born from a network executive — and executed last-minute by J.J. Abrams, without any notion of what the Island, smoke monster, and polar bears would even mean for the show — the series should have crashed and burned harder than Oceanic Flight 815. Yet, it's a rare TV masterpiece that could be described as cinematic, and, no matter how you feel about the ending, a screenwriting feat that should be celebrated. Grab your Dharma beers and listen in!

The inaugural episode of From Broadcast Depth takes a look at the two part pilot of LOST! Kevin and Ben discuss not only what happens in the first two episodes, but looks back at the origins of the show, the landscape of television at the time, and who they felt was the biggest "get" of the cast back in 2004. Our journey with the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 is just getting started!

Common Room: Passionate Discussion of Pop Culture, Food, Fitness, & Fashion!

It's finally here. The first episode of our Lost rewatch. These episodes will not be on the Common Room feed starting with the second episode. Frequency: twice a month. Format: Introduction of guests: First timer: Debbie of The Geeky Twin or Rewatchers: Dave of Pop Culture Case Study and Hadas (that's me!). Recap of the episode: In the pilot, we meet just a few characters but see glimpses of the larger ensemble cast. All we know is that Oceanic Flight 816 crash landed on an island. The pilot was off course and wasn't able to alert the base. There's an ominous distress recording made by a French woman. She says it killed them all and she's all alone. It's been looping for 16 years. Themes We Discuss: Characterization of Women: Sun, Kate, Claire, and Shannon are 4 distinct personalities. Yet Kate is slightly a different breed in these first two episodes. Many people I know seem to hate Kate. Do you know why? Characterization of Sayid: This is a post 9/11 show. Casting brown people as terrorists is an easy and popular thing, yet the character of Sayid is granted depth and easy likeability. Leadership: Who makes a good one? Why? This will be a running theme on our rewatch. And so we begin. No need to be afraid of spoilers. They're at the end! Want to be on the show? You can! Just email me hello@comrom.co and/or join the Facebook group Common Room Lost Rewatch. Never podcasted before? No problem! I'll teach ya. Enjoy and namaste. A Barely Explicable Collection of Moments Every person is a collector, I think. Businesspeople collect money. Travelers collect places. Competitors collect shining moments. Insecure people collect conquests, panties hanging from the bedpost. My own collection consists of curiosities, tokens of moments nearly forgotten; captured glimpses of interesting lives. I'm not certain what this says about me but I like to think it says I'm a writer.   Marcel Proust lectured, “The duty and the task of a writer are those of an interpreter.” So I try to interpret what I find. Arthur Schopenhauer added, “The business of the novelist is not to relate great events, but to make small ones interesting.” So I do my best to make each small item in the collection interesting. Mignon Eberhart echoed my soul when he confessed, “I seat myself at the typewriter and hope, and lurk.” My collection of curiosities is a rock that skips across 500 years of cultural icons. The worldwide ocean of art is impossibly deep and wide and my rock touches only a few superficial places. But the ripples are amazing: A 500 year-old Spanish ship's bell dragged up from the ocean floor in the Philippines, very possibly from one of the two ships Ferdinand Magellan lost there in 1521 during his historic circling of the earth. A pencil sketch of Napoleon drawn by his little brother, 24 year-old Lucien Bonaparte, shortly after the pair of them captured the throne of France in 1799. Don Kehan, Marshall of Manchon, the original manuscript of an unpublished book about Don Quixote written by John Steinbeck. The world's only copy of a 1936 photo of Jacqueline Bouvier at a horse show when she was just 6 years old, http://mondaymemo.wpengine.com/jackieo (but already unmistakably “Jackie O.”) The Wise Men who sat on the piano of Liberace each Christmas, complete with Joseph and Mary and an angel with just one wing. A one-of-a-kind, handmade set dressed in velvet. (Liberace was a flamboyant piano player known for his over-the-top costumes, the original Elton John.)   A cultural icon is never about the thing itself, but the idea it represents. Magellan = Exploration Napoleon = Strategy Quixote = Commitment to a Dream Jackie O. = Elegance Liberace = Showmanship You'll find these and other curiosities touching Teddy Roosevelt, Pablo Picasso, the Wright Brothers, Oceanic Flight 815 and dozens of other ripples on the water of time as you tour the campus at Wizard Academy. You're coming, aren't you?   Roy H. Williams
