Also in theaters but not screened by critics, "The Nun II" promises to bring more scares in the form of a nun.  On streaming platforms, this week: Season 4 of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" continues the hilarious adventures of the normally forgotten crew members who make the starship run on the Paramount Plus platform.  Disney Plus's season 2 of the animated Marvel shorts' "I Am Groot" put the adorable baby Groot into more adorable situations. Disney continues the legacy of former Jedi Knight in the new and likable streaming series “Ahsoka.” The (mostly) true story of a kid with leg braces who dreams of playing Major League Baseball comes to the screen in "The Hill."  Helen Mirren takes on the role of Golda Meir during the 1973 Yom Kippur War in “Golda,” While Liam Neeson takes on another action role in “Retribution.” Adam Sandler and family stars in "You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah." Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of August 18, 2023. A new superhero movie called “Blue Beetle,” featuring a mostly Latin American cast and a fresh feeling (for the most part) that really emphasizes family, is the latest offering for DC superhero fans. “Strays” is a VERY R-rated talking dog comedy with Will Ferrell & Jamie Foxx that mixes bodily function jokes way too liberally for my taste into a pretty sweet story with cute dogs. Netflix's “The Monkey King” is an animated family movie that is enjoyable if not a bit frenetic. The Sundance movie “Landscape with Invisible Hand” is not nearly as rom-com-ish as the trailer would make it seem. While Hulu's “Miguel Wants to Fight” is a comedy about a nice kid who wants to get into a fight before he moves away from his friends, that while fun, the adult language can be a bit of a downer. Amazon's studio has similar problems with “Puppy Love” starring Grant (The Flash) Gustin and Lucy (Pretty Little Liars) Hale. While the new Amazon series  “Harlan Coben's Shelter” is a young adult mystery for people with patience.  Two much more family-friendly choices: Apple's “Snoopy Presents: One-of-a-Kind Marcie” finally lets us get to know Peppermint Patty's bespectacled friend better, and the filmed-in-Utah “Aliens Abducted My Parents and Now I Feel Kinda Left Out.”  Beyond Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Gaming, and Tech, the brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing the nerdy. Gal Gadot is back in another action movie with a cool spy premise, “Heart of Stone” is now on Netflix. Season three of “Only Murders in the Building” makes its premiere on Hulu with guest stars Paul Rudd and Meryl Streep joining our main characters Martin Short, Selena Gomez, and Steve Martin. Some smaller Sundance movies hit wider release with the humorous sci-fi exploration of future childbirth in “The Pod Generation” and “Jules,” featuring Ben Kingsley as an elderly fellow who sees a flying saucer crash in his backyard to very dry humorous results. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of August 4, 2023.  A fresh new (and highly enjoyable) reboot of “Teenage Mutant NinjaTurtles: Mutant Mayhem" leads this way 40 years after the original, with plenty of easter eggs for fans, and is very family-friendly. Another good choice is "Dreamin' Wild,"  a true story about two brothers who get a second chance at music fame thirty years after they thought their chance had passed.  Unfortunately, the lead character in ‘Shortcomings' hated himself so much that Andy finally gave in and agreed with him by the end. On streaming, “The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart” on Amazon Prime Video has Sigourney Weaver trying out an Australian accent in this drama based on a best-selling book dealing with heavy domestic violence themes. Fans of ‘Futurama' are happy to have another season to enjoy on Hulu (yet again.) It's a tougher sell. There is a highly fictionalized movie about the people behind the Beanie Babies craze in the 1990s called "The Beanie Bubble". (Spoiler: Ty Toys does not come off well.)  A Sundance 2023 film hits wide release, “Theater Camp,” starring Ben Platt, and is full of funny moments and characters. Margot Robbie & Ryan Gosling are outstanding as the titular Barbie and her boyfriend Ken in a surprisingly moving movie about the plastic doll. But we can't forget the second portion of the "Barbenheimer" double feature; Christopher Nolan's “Oppenheimer” tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer and much more than just the creation of the first atomic bomb. There is also the new comedy from JK Studios (the original Studio C cast) called “Go West,” which is an enjoyable comedy to prepare for Pioneer Day here in Utah. For sports fans, there are entertaining documentaries available to stream: one about Stephen Curry called "Stephen Curry: Underrated” on Apple TV+, and one about Wilt Chamberlain called "Goliath" on Paramount+. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of July 14, 2023.  It's Tom Cruise leading the way again with the most enjoyable movie of the summer, ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.” Andy does not want to give away too much about this much-anticipated film, but he will let you know… he loved it! And there is a well-made drama called ‘The Miracle Club' starring Maggie Smith, Kathy Bates & Laura Linney also hits the big screen.  In the streaming world, Netflix' “Bird Box Barcelona” is a darker more gruesome sequel than its 2018 predecessor. On Netflix, Season 2 of the hilarious streaming series ‘The Afterparty' is available with the addition of maybe the funniest actor in Hollywood today, Paul Walter Hauser. For your football fix, Netflix has their “Quarterback” series following Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins & Marcus Mariota thru the 2022 season. But If you are looking for some a new suspense thriller series, ‘Full Circle' on Max takes a bit to get going and gets very interesting once it does.
