I watched a movie Sunday with a group of friends. Here are 12 things I learnt: 1. You probably aren't hungover on the couch at home uber-eatsing Maccas from the sofa. 2. You have taken the extraordinary measure of walking, using your perfectly capable legs even though you're still a bit stiff and sore from the gym. 3. This means you have visited the gym four times this week to ensure your ass will squeeze into the ever-shrinking vice of a seat provided these days. 4. You chat amongst yourselves loudly while the shorts are playing because you just do not give a flying shite about that level of decorum any longer. Nobody paid for the shorts, they paid for the film - the rest is marketing. 5. The short you do watch has Leonardo DiCaprio (heartthrob of youth) playing the cantankerous father figure to group of young actors you wouldn't know from a bar of soap. 6. You feel nostalgia that the movie is set in the early 2000s. 7. You find the young actors replicating that style —the clothes, the hair, the style— immediately lame for copying what we clearly wore better. 8. One of your friend has a moon boot on after a ‘fall' he took while out walking with this same group of friends the weekend prior. 9. You love the movie 'Caught Stealing' with Austin Butler. Not just because it's a good simple hearty action thriller but because it's only an hour and half long. 10. That means only one toilet break because it's impossible to sit on 660mls of fizzy water without the feeling you bladder may explode into a thousand pieces. 11. The timeframe is just enough before you need to rearrange to alleviate back pain. 12. You laugh, you're enthralled, you feel content sitting there in the dark with your buddies. Happy in the knowledge any worries you had going in are a world away from the grungy lower east side of Manhattan where the film is set. It's the little things you notice that paint a picture of where your life is at, how old you are and how you fit into a world of ever changing demographics. It's a reminder to enjoy the good moments in life with the people that make you happy. Because one day we'll either have dementia or be dead. Here's to middle age. Halfway dead and fine with it. Thought-provoking Quotes: “Let the top rung of the ladder be your sincere convictions. That's the one to keep sturdy, clear, and visible, and hold that one as tight as you can.” – Jen Hatmaker “Anchor your feet into the ground and stand in this storm. Let it rage. Weather it, weather your own discomfort, weather everybody else's discomfort and whatever loss or change comes along with it, because it will end, and there will come a day when it is not that chaotic and what you will be left with is your integrity and that is enough.” – Jen Hatmaker “Women are capable of getting through the hardest things. Maybe it's a trope because it's true. Maybe the women who are betrayed grieve and recover and rebuild because that's what women do. So maybe it's not such a surprise that we can flourish.” – Amy Hardin “I'm just convinced, this is the time for us to reinvent. Look how awesome we are.” – Jen Hatmaker Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce engagement post - https://www.instagram.com/p/DN02niAXMM-/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MTQ4YWwzOGcycWJlcA== [ENCORE] When the Truth Goes Viral: The Cost (and Benefit) of Living Honestly with Jonathan Merritt - https://jenhatmaker.com/podcasts/series-64/encore-when-the-truth-goes-viral-the-cost-and-benefit-of-living-honestly-with-jonathan-merritt/ Awake: A Memoir by Jen Hatmaker - https://amzn.to/3VnMb0k The Interview: Jen Hatmaker's Life Exploded in Middle Age. Haydn Jones is a little late to the trend, but this week he started baking sourdough. Falling in between the craft beer and veggie garden stages, nothing says you've hit middle-aged quite like a sourdough starter. This was exemplified for Haydn by the visit he and his friend made to Briscoes on their hunt for a good baking dish. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I always thought menopause was something “older” women dealt with. You know, once the kids are gone and you've got gray hair and bifocals. But then... I hit 40.And weird stuff started happening. Was it perimenopause? Hormones? Stress? Just a fluke? Honestly, I didn't know. I wasn't even sure how to know—because no one really talks about this stuff in detail. This week on the Healthy Parenting Handbook podcast, I got to sit down with Jenn Pike, a brilliant practitioner with a background in exercise science and a passion for helping women understand their bodies, hormones, and how to feel strong again—especially in our 40s and 50s. Here's a sneak peek at what we covered:The real definition of perimenopauseWhy your workouts might stop “working” and how to adapt after 40Unexpected early signs of hormone shifts What kind of exercise actually helps your hormones... and what might be hurting themHow to start small and build sustainable health habits during this transitionWhy skipping breakfast is the worst idea for womenWhat to eat, when to eat, and how often to fuel your body the right wayIf you're in your late 30s or 40s and you've been wondering, “What is happening to me?”... this is the conversation you didn't know you needed.Resources We Mention for Perimenopause SymptomsCheck out Jenn's Synced fitness membership program! Besides all of the life changes that occur in middle-age such as children leaving home, readjusting our marriage relationships, figuring out our next life steps, aging parents, etc., how about we add on a heaping serving of menopause where our hormones change and adjust and it affects us not only physically, but also mentally and emotionally as well. So much in such a small time space! On this podcast I'm speaking with Dr. Taylor Hahn, a menopause specialist, who answers many of your questions about what is going on and how can we manage our menopause in helpful and healthy ways. In episode 5 Dr. Karyne Messina and Dr. Harry Gill talked about what can happen when middle-age and older adults watch screens too much as opposed to engaging in other important tasks in life during Erik Eriksson's last two stages of development. In the “Generativity versus Stagnation” stage (ages 40-65), productive individuals focus on contributing to society by raising families, engaging in meaningful work, and connecting with their communities. This can't be done in optimal ways when people spend too much time watching screens. Excessive screen time may also lead to a sense of stagnation if it prevents individuals from engaging in life in meaningful ways. In the “Integrity vs. Despair” stage (65+ years old), people who are connected to others don't watch screens excessively because they are engaged in life in their later years reflecting on what they have accomplished whether it is through writing books or sharing information with others in different ways. Too much screen time can interfere with the ability to engage in a meaningful review of one's life. Instead of sharing wisdom with younger generations, older adults who focus of watching screens for many hours a day may become isolated and disconnected from real-world interactions, potentially leading to a sense of despair. Dr. Messina discussed the fact that adults who spend 6 or more hours a day on social media platforms tend to be much more depressed and anxious than those who don't. Dr. Gill talked about the effects of too much screentime on sleep, explaining how blue light emitted by screens interferes with falling asleep because of the lack of production of melatonin. This prevents people from falling asleep. They both talked about the benefits of turning off phones and televisions early in the evening so that a person, couple or family can have quality time participating in some type of meaningful activity versus watching what people on screens are saying or doing. Another topic included in this podcast and YouTube video outlined ways to mitigate problems associated with too much screen time. Dr. Messina focused on the importance of community which she thinks is important at all ages. If getting together in person isn't possible, talking with a friend on the phone is better than using this device for passive purposes such as scrolling through social media posts. Dr. Gill reminded people how important it is to meet in person and said some of his patients have actually enjoyed going back to work full-time once they have gotten used to it again. He added that screen aren't always negative later in life if people aren't able to meet in person. For example, if older people can't drive or easily meet with friends or family members in person, he said some of his patients have weekly Zoom meetings with others which helps them feel connected. Drs. Gill and Messina talked about being addicted to screens and what people can do about this condition which starts with a commitment to set limits and make rules about screentime. Finding other worthwhile or pleasurable activities was included in the discussion such as listening to music, reading, painting, doing crossword puzzles, etc. Learn more about your ad choices. EP. 193: On this episode, I'm sitting down with my friend Cynthia Thurlow—a nurse practitioner, intermittent fasting expert, and leading voice in perimenopause and menopause. We set out to talk about intermittent fasting—and we absolutely did—but our conversation went so much deeper. We covered bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), perimenopause, menopause, and the key strategies women need to thrive in midlife. If you're navigating hormonal shifts, metabolic changes, or just want to optimize your health as you age, this episode is packed with practical, no-nonsense insights. Cynthia and I are completely aligned in our mission to support women through these transitions—without the fluff, confusion, or outdated advice. In this episode, we cover: How Cynthia transitioned from cardiology to intermittent fasting The serious risks of a broken hip as we age (and how to prevent them) Why giving your gut a break is crucial for longevity The impact of chronic stress on your metabolism and hormones Vaginal health and why vaginal estrogen is a game-changer Chronic health issues in older women and the different types of HRT How to find the right doctor for hormone therapy and longevity medicine What it really means to age gracefully (hint: it's not about “anti-aging”) How fasting strategies should evolve in perimenopause and beyond The importance of metabolic flexibility and adapting nutrition over time This is a must-listen for any woman who wants to take control of her health, feel strong, and make middle age look easy. There is always an excuse for not exercising, a religious prohibition, some hereditary syndrome that makes you feel desperate when you breathe hard, an allergic reaction to your own perspiration, but these can be overcome with help. My excuse is that I hated high school phy-ed with a passion, the chin-ups, the rope climb, the running somersault, the running dive over the horse, the wrestling, the ridicule and the bullying, and I despised walking naked into a shower with other young men. I still do. After I graduated, I made it a point not to join other naked men to take showers. When invited, I have declined. If this is a favorite activity of yours, I do not judge. For some men, this may be the high point of the week. Don't say this is self-loathing on my part because it isn't: it's the other men I loathe, not myself. And it's not homophobia. I have many gay male friends and they do not undress when they come to my home. I am perfectly okay taking a shower by myself or with my wife on very rare occasions such as my 70th and 80th birthdays, the Feast Day of the Assumption in August and on October 27, the day on which Jack Morris pitched the Minnesota Twins to a 1-0 victory in the 7th game of the 1991 World Series.
