This is The Digital Story Podcast #944, April 23, 2024. Today's theme is "Nikon 28-400mm Lens Review - Does It Measure Up?" I'm Derrick Story. Opening Monologue The specs seem almost too good to be true. The Nikon zoom has a focal length range of 28-400mm, yet it's compact and light. On the Z8, Z9, and Zf, it features Synchro VR, enabling 5.5 stops of stabilization. It has weather-sealed construction and close focusing. And it costs $1,296. How does it perform? Tune in to today's TDS Photography Podcast to find out. Plus an OM System Warning and ON1 Photo Raw 2024. I hope you enjoy the show.

This is The Digital Story Podcast #901, June 27, 2023. Today's theme is "How ON1 Photo RAW 2023 Wrecked my Workflow." I'm Derrick Story. Opening Monologue I was doing just fine. Leaning on Capture One Pro for my big assignments and macOS Photos for iPhone snapshots. It wasn't perfect, but comfortable. Then ON1 incorporated Photo Keyword AI into their latest Photo RAW release, and I made the big mistake of testing it. On this week's podcast, I'll explain the chaos that ensued. I hope you enjoy the show.

Opening Monologue AI technology is simplifying the workflow across many of our photo editing apps. And the latest release of ON1's Photo RAW 2023 is a great example. For many visual creatives, ON1 software is already a staple in their bag of tricks. This latest release will most likely expand that user base further. We'll take a look why in today's TDS Photography Podcast, plus an overview of PhotoLab 6 as well. I hope you enjoy the show.

I think many of us are the types of photographers that seek the single image. Most of my photo outings are with a single frame mindset - capture the shot. That one perfect frame that captures the essence of a place or a pristine moment in time. I certainly fall squarely into that camp. If I were a musician, my goal would be to write the next great power ballad. There is, however, another approach - a body of work. A set of images that stand together to tell a  story. To continue the musical analogy, it's a visual medley, a photo essay. And a collection of images can tell a richer story than just the single image. In today's podcast, let's talk about presenting a series of photographs as a set. I also share a personal story of what led me to want to talk about this subject. The 2020 version of On1 Photo Raw has some surprising features but hasn't entirely eliminated performance problems that I found last year. In Short Circuits: Windows 10 has a silly annoyance that I've been trying to fix for far too long. Now I've found a partial solution that at least reduces the frustration. • Development continues on the Chromium-based version of Microsoft's Edge browser and a beta version that's sufficiently stable for those who want to see how it works is available. • In Spare Parts (only on the website): Too many companies are still transferring files that often contain proprietary information insecurely. • If you find that you're locked out of your smart phone, PhoneRescue might be what you need to get back to normal. • Twenty years ago: I wrote about disk drives that were "so small you might misplace them." Compared to today's disk drives, they were physically larger, far more expensive, and able to store only a tiny fraction of what today's drives hold.

Should every photographer learn Photoshop? Clearly, many don't use Photoshop due to the learning curve that comes with it. We'll discuss the pros and cons of learning Photoshop, as well as some alternatives to Photoshop. We discuss the difference of capabilities between Lightroom and Photoshop. It mostly comes down to how much you need to enhance your photos, or how much you need to manipulate your photos. Of course, there are tasks that Lightroom simply can't handle, like creating composites, graphics or even scrapbooks. Photoshop is an outstanding resource when you need to add layers of different elements together. We also discuss some Photoshop alternatives, like Canva, ON1 Photo RAW and Skylum Luminar so you can decide whether you need Photoshop or not.

But seriously. Is it really that bad and, if so, can any other product fill those shoes? They laughed, they yelled, they cried (silently and when no one was looking) as both recounted stories of untold minutes and hours wasted while their current photo manager and editor of choice chugged along. Alternative products were brought up and excuses were made as to why they couldn't switch. It was emotional.
