Guest: Dr. Sean Waugh, National Severe Storms Laboratory research scientistAs we've seen in the movies, and real life, tornadoes are some of the most destructive forces in nature, capable of leveling homes and damaging entire communities in a matter of minutes. And what about hail? It causes BILLIONS and billions of dollars in damage in the US every year. But how do we get up-close, real-time data on these violent storms in order to learn what is needed for better predictions? That's where cutting-edge field research comes in. Today on Weather Geeks, we're diving into the world of storm observation and mobile weather technology with Sean Waugh from NOAA's National Severe Storms Laboratory. From deploying instrumented drones and mobile mesonets to braving the extreme environments of tornadoes and hailstorms, his work is helping scientists better understand the atmospheric conditions that drive severe weather for years to come…Chapters00:00 The Destructive Power of Tornadoes and Hail02:58 Sean Wu: A Journey into Meteorology05:57 Innovative HAIL Camera Technology08:47 Chasing Hail: The Challenges and Safety Measures11:59 Observing Hail: The Role of High-Speed Cameras14:46 Mobile Mesonets: Gathering Atmospheric Data17:59 Machine Learning and AI in Weather Prediction21:02 AI in Meteorology: Enhancing Forecasting Accuracy24:23 Hands-On Learning: Training the Next Generation of Meteorologists26:00 Tornado Research: Understanding Formation and Behavior28:05 Behind the Scenes of Twisters: A Meteorologist's Role32:20 Authenticity in Film: The Science of Twisters36:41 Passion in Meteorology: Inspiring Future GenerationsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Hop in the Twister-Wagon, we're going STORM CHASING! The GBGBs review the 90's disaster movie classic, Twister (1996) starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. You guys know that Glen Powell movie called Twisters? Well this is basically like a prequel where you find out why the Tornado is so mad. This movie has everything: Twisters (as advertised), ROMANCE, flying cows (or maybe just the same one over and over), and an original song by Sammy Hagar-era Van Halen. Also discussed: Ryan's brave close encounter with a tornado, how to stop a tornado, and whether or not Bill Paxton's character's pants should have blown off at the end. Thanks for stopping by!

Hey DTP listeners! I'm sharing an episode of Historians at the Movies, a podcast by Jason Herbert, in which I was the guest historian! If you like what Jason is doing, check out historiansatthemovies.com. Historians At The Movies features historians from around the world talking about your favorite movies and the history behind them. This isn't rivet-counting; this is fun. Eventually, we'll steal the Declaration of Independence. This week Kate Carpenter drops in to talk about the new film Twisters along with her research on the history of modern-day storm chasing. We get into what they got right, what liberties they took, the role of climate change in the spread of tornado alley, and exactly how crazy are tornado chasers anyway. If you feel it, ride it. About our guest: Kate Carpenter is a doctoral candidate in the History of Science at Princeton University. Before that, she earned a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a Master of Arts in History (with an emphasis in public history) from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. In between, she has been a writer, copy editor, designer, screenprinter, farmers' market volunteer and communications officer, and occasional history consultant. When she's not hosting and producing Drafting the Past, she is working on a dissertation about the history of tornado science and storm chasing in the second half of the twentieth century.
Guest: Charles Peek, Storm Tracker for The Weather ChannelIt's the thrill of the chase! After a record-breaking severe season, countless jaw-dropping videos of supercells and tornadoes were live streamed from every inch of Tornado Alley. Coupling that with the much anticipated release of the movie Twisters this summer, the sport of storm chasing has been a hot topic conversation. A lot of chasers would tell you that the movie Twister inspired them to pursue this career, but a LOT has changed since 1996! More technology, the rise of social media, and other avenues to make money are all on the table! On the show today, we have long-time storm chaser Charles Peek from The Weather Channel to talk about chasing in the year 2024 and beyond…See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

A plucky meteorology heroine; a male rival with no shortage of hubris; and some very, very big storms: that's the basic formula behind the new disaster action movie Twisters, which follows storm chasers around Oklahoma amid a tornado outbreak. It's a standalone sequel to the 1996 film Twister, a box-office hit in its day which also spurred a lot of real-life research into severe storms. We've since learned a lot about how tornadoes behave, and the technology of storm chasing has improved dramatically. But behind these summer blockbusters is a mystery that scientists are still trying to solve: why do tornadoes form at all?For sponsor-free episodes of Consider This, sign up for Consider This+ via Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org.Email us at considerthis@npr.org.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
