We talk about what degrees can offer vs. what real-world experience teaches you, whether clients actually care about your qualifications, and how you can break into the creative field even if you never step foot in a lecture hall. We also catch up on Matt's recent visit to CameraWorld—an event for getting hands-on with the newest camera tech, software updates from Capture One, as well as Cameron's thoughts on his latest gear pickup: the Sony A7C II and Cameron starting a new YouTube channel! For years, Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom have dominated the photo editing world, setting the gold standard for photographers and digital artists. However, in today's creative landscape, more photographers are seeking alternatives - whether to avoid subscription fees, find a workflow that better fits their style, or explore new editing tools. If you're looking for powerful alternatives that rival (or even exceed) Adobe's offerings in some areas, Capture One, ON1 Photo RAW, and Luminar Neo should be on your radar. Let's dive into how these platforms stack up and why they might be a great fit for your photography workflow. Ultimately, the "best" choice depends on your needs, editing style, and budget. If you need the absolute best RAW processing and studio-level control, Capture One is unbeatable. If you want a Photoshop + Lightroom replacement without ongoing fees, ON1 Photo RAW is a strong pick. And if you want creative edits in minutes without a learning curve, Luminar Neo is a powerhouse. Pro Tip: Many of these platforms offer free trials — so download a few, test them out, and see which one fits your creative flow! Well, 2024 has certainly come and gone in a flash, meaning it's time once again for us to reflect on new photo offerings in our annual Cameras of the Year episode, now renamed Photo Gear of the Year. Featured in our discussion are new releases from Canon, FUJIFILM, Leica, Mint, Nikon, OM SYSTEM, Panasonic, Ricoh Pentax, and Sony. In the words of our recurring guest, Kevin Rickert, B&H's Senior Sales Trainer for Photography and Lighting, “Everything old is new again” at least when it comes to this year's most sought-after camera releases. A penchant for pocketable, fixed lens cameras led us to organize our camera offerings by type rather than in an alphabetical laundry list. Along with debating the current craze for “the digicam look,” we consider whether manufacturers will respond to consumers' increasing appetite for midrange point and shoots. After the break, we shift to the newest crop of flagship cameras that are built for speed, while also discussing notable updates to other new releases. We also shed light on the essential role served by firmware updates, both in trimming a new camera's time to market and allowing you to get more out of the camera you already have. As Kevin points out, “It's an important part of having a camera. Much like if you have a car, you need to get oil changes.” We wrap things up with some predictions for 2025, including Kevin's hopes for a continued resurgence of point and shoot models, plus some intriguing new photo accessories that caught his eye this year. Stay to the end to learn about the inventive new Fjordan camera control for the iPhone, recently acquired by Leica. Is your photo library spread out among different drives and apps? We're not talking about maybe having a couple of Lightroom Classic catalogs—it's not uncommon now for a photographer to have Lightroom libraries, Capture One libraries, Apple Photos libraries, even old iPhoto and Aperture libraries collected over the years. In this episode we welcome back Matthieu Kopp of CYME to talk about version 2.0 of the utility Peakto, which can bring sense to all of that accumulated chaos. Because of Fujifilm's massive launch last week (and Sigma dropped a new 24-70mm f/2.8, too), the PetaPixel Podcast team had to record early and release later than usual, but that also meant a lot happened that they didn't get to talk about. That changes this week, because there was a ton to go over including Canon finally annoucning the development of the EOS R1, a camera that has been in development for at least three years. But that didn't go as smoothly as Canon perhaps would have preferred, as Adorama published fake specifications for the camera on their website and was then forced to make a public apology. Beyond that, Adobe announced that Firefly generative AI tools were coming to Lightroom and Ricoh's new GRIII HDF is so popular that Japan had to resort to selling it by lottery. This week, Panasonic announced the S9 and Chris and Jordan have some thoughts on it and also share how they think L-mount is doing now in mid 2024. Head to your nearest authorized retailer or visit explore.omsystem.com/petapixel to take advantage of this amazing offer before it ends on April 28, 2024. Almost every camera manufacturer makes its own photo editing software, but we aren't super enthused to use any of them -- especially if camera features are locked behind them. As long as there is no real reason to ever download it and fire it up, it's actually not a big deal if a camera company's software doesn't work great. Photographers are using third-party software like Adobe Lightroom and Capture One a majority of the time and it probably isn't unusual for them to never feel the need to download first-party software. That was until companies started locking features behind these programs. For example, Canon Dual Pixel RAW requires the use of Digital Photo Professional and Sony requires photographers fire up Imaging Edge if they want to use Pixel Shift Multi-Shot. Neither of these programs are intuitive to use and, perhaps worse, they are frustratingly slow and prone to crashing. So, looking at the state of photography in 2024, Chris, Jordan, and Jaron asked themselves this: how is it acceptable that all these programs are just varying degrees of bad? The three dig into it while driving from San Jose to San Francisco in the first-ever PetaPixel Carcast! We use Riverside to record The PetaPixel Podcast in our online recording studio. Every half-decade or so, medium format experiences some kind of "resurgence," and thanks mainly to Fujifilm's excellent GFX 100 II, many photographers might be interested in jumping over to the large sensor cameras. With Hasselblad's update to the 907x system last week, the team discusses where each medium format system resides, who they're for, what are they are good at (and what do manufacturers want them to do), and what the future of medium format might be. Is it doing just fine on its current trajectory? Would it be a fantastic platform to bring back a TLR-style camera body? Is it the one place a DSLR still makes sense? Chris, Jordan, and Jaron debate. Better Fuji Photos Episode 32: A Photo Mechanic + Capture One Workflow Photo Mechanic is a great editor, but you can't process RAW photos. Capture One is a superior RAW processor, but its editing functionality is nowhere near what Photo Mechanic can do. How can you easily combine Photo Mechanic and Capture One in a workflow to get the best of both programs? That's what we'll discuss in this podcast episode, with these steps: Set up Photo Mechanic Set up Capture One Edit in Photo Mechanic Put the selected photos in a Selects subfolder Open photos in Capture One Process RAW photos in Capture One Export processed photos into Processed subfolder Though it may seem like a few more steps than necessary, it's actually faster and more efficient than trying to do everything in Capture One (or Lightroom Classic) alone! Jeffery starts right out of the gate with a deep dive on how we're supposed to feel about how we're supposed to feel, which gets us to being overwhelmed while making things, which gets us to tethering to CaptureOne on the iPad and using diffusion filters to get the look we're after in camera if we can. Less options later, but perhaps that's what we're should be going for.
Creating and sustaining a successful photo career is no easy feat. To help aspiring young imagemakers acquire the needed creative concepts and business skills, two New York-based organizations—ASMP NY and BKC—have teamed up to offer the innovative mentorship, education, and industry immersion program The Bridge. Open to individuals from 18- to 26-years-old, The Bridge embraces diversity and offers opportunity to underserved communities, regardless of formal photography experience. Best of all, this four-month, real world program is free to accepted students. We first learned about The Bridge during a chat with program co-founder Liam Alexander for the show ASMP-NY and the Future of Photo Trade Organizations in February 2022. Since the program's second year recently wrapped with a gallery exhibition in Brooklyn, and plans are in the works to expand The Bridge to other ASMP chapters in 2023, we wanted to learn more about this valuable initiative in advance of the next application window this spring. For this week's podcast, we're joined by Alexander, who sheds light on The Bridge program's inner workings and educational goals during the first half of the show. After a break, we speak with 2022 Bridge graduate Eli Edwards, who describes what he learned through the program, and the resulting shift in the pictures he makes, as well as in his creative point of view. To discover how to futureproof your career and learn how to apply for this free program, make sure to listen in! He has also been instrumental in building other community focused creative projects designed to educate and inspire, such as IThou at NYU's Kimmel Galleries, The Exchange at Rush Arts, and #StrokeofGenius. Liam's own work has been featured in gallery exhibitions and art fairs throughout the US, and at the second annual Toolkit Festival in Venice, Italy. His work has been published in magazines including Nylon and Rolling Stone, and he creates projects with major brands like Wix.com, Samsung, SAP, Renaissance Hotels, and the city of New York. The direct air capture industry is attempting to recreate the oil and gas sector in reverse—at a highly accelerated rate. And those of us in the space have a tremendous opportunity to build something truly impactful. But how do we educate the general public around the carbon removal technologies at our disposal? Can a well-crafted meme help people understand the benefits of direct air capture? Jason Hochman is Cofounder and Senior Director of the recently launched Direct Air Capture Coalition, a global nonprofit working to educate, engage, and mobilize society around the deployment of DAC technology at the pace and scale the climate crisis requires. He also happens to be an accomplished mememaker in the carbon removal space. On this episode of Reversing Climate Change, Jason joins Ross and cohost Siobhan Montoya Lavender to do a live meme workshop, sharing his approach to writing DAC-themed memes for popular Simpsons and Sith Kermit templates. Jason discusses the early growth of the Direct Air Capture Coalition, describing how it seeks to serve as an educational resource and platform for collaboration among its 44 member organizations. Listen in to understand the biggest problems facing the mass adoption of direct air capture and learn how Jason is addressing pushback on DAC with resources like the DAC Report Library as well as his CDR 101 meme thread.
