Why is this real estate guy doing a podcast about beer? Well, it goes way back to my rugby days. If you know rugby, you know that beer is the fuel of this sport. Over the years I have included many local breweries on my roadtrip stops.
Take the first half hour of Morning Live to go!
Some of you may be familiar with Link Up, a craft beer-focused non-profit organization that BAOS Co-Founded with their friends at 5e Baron. Tiffany and Cee were honoured to host a session at the 2023 Ontario Craft Brewers Conference in Niagara Falls, ON where they spoke on behalf of Link Up about the ethics and economics of diversity in craft beer. They covered why diversifying your workforce is an ethical decision (and it's just weird to walk into a room that doesn't represent the world outside the brewery), case studies and real-life examples of how diversity can directly lead to sales and positive brand engagement, some numbers that explain the revenue that breweries are missing out on by ignoring a diverse consumer base, and most importantly, applicable solutions for breweries to actively work towards diversifying their taprooms and staff. Many thanks to the OCB, CCBA, Jeff Talmey and Troy Burtch for inviting Link Up to speak. See you in Hamilton in 2023! It's the middle of Ontario Craft Beer Week! The event started on June 8th and ends on June 16th. The province-wide festival is putting the spotlight on the independent, local craft beer industry of Ontario and is being organized by Ontario Craft Brewers. The Ford government has cited the problems that craft brewers have in getting retail shelf space As one of the reasons for cancelling their contract with the Beer Store. There are 276 craft brewers in 110 communities across the province. Another 80 are coming. The industry employs 2200 people and they say there are 9000 related jobs. Craft beer has just under 9% of the beer market and the industry claims it generates 1.4 billion a year. Libby Speaks with Jeff Dornan, Chairman of the Ontario Craft Brewers Association, and Jon Laurencic of Elora Brewing Company.
Alex is joined by Chris Schryer, Toronto-based beer writer and educator, to discuss this sudsy situation.
As part of our Grey Cup Week coverage, TCA was super excited to have Nita Beer Co come onboard as our presenting sponsor. So it only made good sense to have Nita's founder Andy come on and talk about the brewery, the craft beer business, some of the friendships and rivalries that exist around the industry and tons more. Regular listeners know that if there's one thing that Matt & Rob have a passion for, it's beer. It's quite possibly the most frequently talked about topic on the show. So it was great to go right to the source and have an expert in to put a few back and talk suds. You can visit Nita Beer Co's website to order product by mail at www.nitabeer.com or drop in and visit them at 190 Colonnade Road in Ottawa. Celebrating Canadian beer history - we have a lot of it! Katy (@klwatts) is joined by Brian Papineau (@bryehndotnet) and Allie MacAlister (@alliemackie / http://alliemackie.com/) to talk about the beers that have helped shaped Canada's brewing traditions. Show Notes: Beer history is my favourite type of history (it requires a high level of participation). Book Recommendation: Ontario Beer: A Heady History of Brewing from the Great Lakes to the Hudson Bay by Alan McLeod and Jordan St. John. The Story of Three Fired Guys (3FG): How Steam Whistle Was Founded (super fun video with photos and videos of the founders/brewery before they became Steam Whistle). The Ontario Craft Brewers is a trade association representing brewers in Ontario (those who have memberships). Have you seen the Steam Whistle fleet? Do you remember this commercial? I'm all about the cute elephant videos - seriously. I would totally scan my passport for a Canadian. Alpine Lager has a pretty amazing history - grab a can and enjoy this read. Brewing a lager is hard! Seriously! I am getting back into home brewing - watch out world! Check out Brian's review of Old Style Pilsner! Old Style Pilsner - Old / New(ish). Book Recommendation: Ambitious Brew: The Story of American Beer by Maureen Ogle. DMS / Canned corn aroma in beer. Do you know what Kvas is? The Unibroue stories are pretty fun. Quebec—Canada's “Belgian” Province. We totally didn't talk about the history of Unibroue at all (I blame the beer). Mmm Sapporo Reserve. Beer List: Steam Whistle Pilsner - Steam Whistle Brewing Molson Canadian Lager - Molson Coors Canada Alpine Lager - Moosehead Breweries Ltd Old Style Pilsner - Molson Coors Canada Grasshopper Wheat Ale - Big Rock Brewery Maudite - Unibroue Subscribe: RSS: http://www.613beer.com/613beercast?format=rss Stitcher: http://bit.ly/613BeerCast-Stitcher iTunes: http://bit.ly/613BeerCast-iTunes Google Play: http://bit.ly/613BeerCast-Play Join the conversation! In this second Ontario Brewer Podcast for September, Master Cicerone Mirella Amato continues her exploration of OCB-brewed Stouts. She is once again joined by Robin LeBlanc, beer writer and owner of TheThirstyWench.com, and historian and beer writer, Jordan St.John at saintjohnswort.ca Having correctly guessed which stout was in front of them in the last podcast, Robin and Jordan are looking forward to enjoying two other OCB-brewed interpretations of the style. The three stouts featured this month were Granite Brewery Keefe's Irish Stout, Mill Street Cobblestone Stout*, and Perth Brewery Oatmeal Stout. * At the time these podcasts were recorded, Mill Street Brewery was still a member of Ontario Craft Brewers. Since then, the brewery has been purchased and has left OCB. We thank Mill Street for their past contributions and wish them well in the future. Click here for OCB's response to Mill Street's sale. About our two guests this month: Robin LeBlanc is a Toronto-based Photographer and writer. As the owner of the award-winning craft beer site The Thirsty Wench and Beer Writer for Torontoist, she has appeared on television, radio and newspapers preaching the gospel of good beer.www.thethirstywench.com Jordan St.John is a Certified Cicerone, Beer Writer and Historian who trained as a brewer but opted out of having to clean all that equipment. He deals with elaborate concepts and total nonsense at saintjohnswort.ca
