It's always a pleasure to give flowers to the OG breweries as they paved the way for the industry we all know and love today, so we were stoked to finally get the folks from Steam Whistle (and Beau's) on the pod. President Bromlyn Bethune and Brewmaster Erica McOustra joined Cee and Nate to chat about the Steam Whistle story, why they continue to do one thing really, really well, the expansion to other styles (and the retraction), the acquisition of Beau's and the impact Beau's has had on the craft beer industry in Canada, how they've been able to transition Beau's recipes to the larger Steam Whistle system, their partnership with New Belgium and why they've moved on from that setup, how they've been able to innovate and continue the Beau's brand, and their take on the current tariff situation. We got into a great lineup of beers: Steam Whistle Pilsner, Beau's Lug Tread Lagered Ale, Beau's Juiced AF Hazy IPA, Beau's Lug Lite Light Lager, Beau's Barn Burner Amber Ale, and Beau's Crème Brew-Lée Dessert Stout. This was a gem, cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads
Back in November of 2024, Cee and Tiff held a session at the Ontario Craft Brewers Conference with Jonathan Barraball of Royal City and Ram McAllister of Fairweather Brewing in Hamilton, ON. It was titled "How To Market Your Craft Brewery Using Social Media in 2025", and it felt like it could be a valuable session to recreate for the podcast. They did a deep dive into all things social, including the 4 C's of Social Media Growth, high level best practices (profile optimization, platform options, content formats, community > virality, storytelling), consistency, the roles of a Social Media Manager, how to use a Content Calendar, how to create Content Pillars, how to stay consistent on social, how to up the quality of your content, content creation tools and software, clarity and community, AI and automation tools, how to lean into the current tariff situation, and attracting a new wave of craft beer drinkers. They got into some local gems - Steam Whistle Pilsner, Tooth & Nail Vim & Vigor, and True History The Tmavé. Here are the references mentioned in the podcast: - High Season Co. Cam is a visionary entrepreneur who has made a significant impact in both the craft brewing and boating industries. As the co-founder and former CEO of Steam Whistle Brewing, he led the company to become one of the most successful and profitable craft breweries in Canada, despite fierce competition from larger breweries. Cam's innovations include establishing an eco-friendly manufacturing facility, which earned Steam Whistle recognition as Canada's Greenest Brewery, and leading industry and government relations initiatives that resulted in numerous milestone policy changes. His strategic planning and brand positioning skills earned him an Entrepreneur of the Year award, and Steam Whistle was recognized as one of Canada's Top Employers. In 2010, Cam turned his passion for performance boating into the innovative company Carbon Marine, where he pioneered the use of advanced carbon fiber laminates in the marine industry. He also co-owns the legendary Pantera Boats brand. His current venture, Voltari Marine Electric Inc, is a company that he co-founded, with the vision of eliminating pollution from the world's waterways while providing the most electrifying boating experience. Cam's leadership and entrepreneurial spirit, paired with his educational background, with a BA in Business and Philosophy, and a graduate of Ivey Academy's Quantum Shift entrepreneurship program, has led him to be a powerful force in shaping these industries. His vision is to make a positive impact on the world and bring about a cleaner and more exciting way of enjoying the water.Voltari ElectricBrought to you by SHIPSHAPE
Most people only have one spouse. Having more than 2 careers at a time is rare. The world would be far better off if we'd never had a second Crow movie. Or absolutely anything Keanu Reeves ever did other than John Wick. There was only one ring in that book. One goal can win a soccer match. But somehow when it comes to the production of beer today, we think every brewery should make 7 million mediocre beers. One-offs, seasonals, brand extensions, variety packs and special releases. All this to catch the attention of a mass of asses that don't care about beer or the traditional values it once held. Well, Greg Taylor at Canada's Steam Whistle brewing says only hosers would do that. He says it's all wrong. See, Greg and his co-founders started Canada's largest craft brewery in the early 2000's with a single goal: to make one beer and make it really, really well. And they did for nearly 20 years before switching tracts at the roundabout and going Full US Craft Beer Gonzo. They were making various line extensions and new products until one day Greg runs back in the building, rips out the excess and goes back to their motto of “do one thing really, really well.” Before I get too far into it, I'm going to shut up and let him explain his story. https://steamwhistle.ca/ https://beaus.ca/ https://www.newbelgium.com/ Episode Sponsored by: Brewery Direct Simpson Motorcycle Helmets Leapfrog Promotional Products Where to get my book --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/damnbrewery/support

Steam Whistle Brewery, based in a converted roundhouse in downtown Toronto, would easily be one of Canada's most recognizable beer on the market with it's bright green background, and a cloud of steam surrounding an activated whistle on the bottles and cans that houses their award winning premium pilsner. Tim McLaughlin, VP of Marketing, takes the helm of chatting with us about the past, present and future of Steam Whistle. Their use of old-school retro branding echoes the breweries idea of making beer through quality that's built to last. Website: https://steamwhistle.ca/ Instagram: @steamwhistlebrewing
What do the beers discussed on this week's episode of Domestic Pints ONLY have in common? Well, two are lagers... but one is a pilsner, so... hmm anyways these bottles and cans are known for their green labelling and design. We begin with a yizner fav: ROLLING ROCK. The next two beers are two of the most popular independently brewed beers in Canada, STEAM WHISTLE PILSNER and MOOSEHEAD LAGER (yes, both of these companies have escaped the clutches of InBev and Miller Coors). Compared to the previous episode, this one was a lot more jovial as we shared a lot of fun history and experiences. Enjoy! What better way to wrap up the Steam Whistle live on location sessions than with my dear pal, the incredibly gifted Stephen Stanley? In this finale episode, Stephen and I cover a lot of ground - his new record, his new radio show, his new t-shirt...! In addition to sharing some fantastic skin-vibrating songs, Stephen also shares some great stories, like the time when he was introduced as "Steve and Stan Lee", his experiences in America with Lowest of the Low, R.E.M.'s Peter Buck playing his guitars during a Horseshoe gig, and how an owl both terrified him and inspired him to write a very special song which he performs live for us. Thanks and sincere apologies to Lisa Taillefer (in fact pronounced 'tie-fair') and everyone at Steam Whistle for making the live on location series an unforgettable experience. Stanley's playlist: The Flaming Lips - Mother Please Don't Be Sad David Bromberg - Mr. Bojangles Drive By Truckers - Thoughts & Prayers The Weather Station - Robber Daniel Romano - (Gone Is) All But A Quarry of Stone
Friend of the show and one-woman hurricane Suzi Kory drops in this week for episode four of the No Sleep 'til Sudbury Steam Whistle live on location series recorded at the Steam Whistle Roundhouse in downtown Toronto. As she always does, Suzi brings her unique high-energy blend of engagement, inspiration, and lots of laughs. And this time around as an added bonus, she's joined by guitarist Jeff Brown for her NSTS singing debut, performing her single "Outlaw". Kory's playlist: Joan Baez - Diamonds and Rust Bellamy Brothers - Let Your Love Flow Little River Band - Cool Change Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird John Lennon - Woman
Back by popular demand, R&B songstress Sandra Bouza returns to the show as my guest for part three of the NSTS Steam Whistle live on location series. Her first appearance on the show got a lot of attention, and now she's back with a new list of songs and another searing acoustic performance. Highlights of our chat include Janis Joplin, her very unique way of forgiving others, Blood on the Tracks, and Sandra's tendency to surreptitiously sneak extra songs into her NSTS playlist. Bouza's playlist: Andreya Triana - Woman Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue Jill Scott - You Don't Know Bob Dylan - Simple Twist of Fate Howling Wolf - Smokestack Lightning
Sandy Horne and Gord Deppe of The Spoons join me this week for Episode II of the No Sleep 'til Sudbury multi-show series live on location from the Steam Whistle Roundhouse facility in downtown Toronto. Sandy and Gord have both been on the show solo previously, so we thought it would be cool to have them come in together and play, and fool around with the idea of skin vibrating songs. They attempt to guess each others' selections, which results in a lot of laughs and also sheds light on some interesting Spoons trivia. And, they perform a great song from their new record called "Landing Lights". Really fun episode. Deppe's playlist: Liam Gallagher - It Doesn't Have To Be That Way Post Malone - Circles The Weeknd - Feel It Coming Horne's playlist: Original Theme From Star Trek Styx - Light Up Beethoven - Moonlight Movement Number 14
Welcome to the special NSTS five-episode series created in partnership with the Steam Whistle Brewery, recorded live on location at their Roundhouse facility in downtown Toronto. This is a cool project I've been working on for a while, and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. Steam Whistle is a brand I've always liked, but it wasn't until I learned more about their deep affinity for music and the arts that I became a real fan. As such, the collaboration between Steam Whistle and No Sleep 'til Sudbury was a natural fit, and I was happy to put together a series of episodes with them that showcases some of my favourite talents and favourite people - Stephen Stanley, The Spoons, Sandra Bouza, and Suzi Kory. As an introduction to this series, I wanted to speak with Steam Whistle VP and music fan Tim McLaughlin, who shares some history and some of the great things they've done for indie artists, as well as how Steam Whistle came to be known as The Cathedral of Beer. And trust me, if you're into music and beer, this is most definitely a place of worship. Cheers!
