On y découvre "It's A Mirror", sensible et agoraphobe. Our latest episode includes a fount of ideas and information that range from interesting and entertaining (like attending a house concert) to borderline apocalyptic (like newly introduced, widely available, simple to use, and highly sophisticated image management software that allows realistic fakes). We try to keep our heads on straight by also discussing what we are watching and enjoying, as well as providing a taste of the nefarious powers of big banks in Canada. All in all it's 40 minutes that should leave you with things light and things heavy to think about.Links: Shed Dogs; Undertow Shows (house concerts); All My Friends are Funeral Singers, by Califone; Google's scary new Reimagine feature; Gemini AI; how Canadian banks create money; The Double; Creating Christ; Krishnamurti documentary; A Trip to Infinity; One Day; plastic surgery in Korea; K-drama clowns; Emily in Paris.Theme music is Escaping like Indiana Jones by Komiku, with permission.
The best way to spread cheer is singing loud for all to hear. — Elf (attributed to Buddy the Elf, written by David Berenbaum) Express Yourself! teen radio host, Julia Howe, is part of a Grammy-winning choral group who have recently been nominated for Best American Roots Song and Best American Folk Album for the 67th Grammy Awards as we were featured on folk artist Aoife O' Donovan's recent album All My Friends. Julia begins the program by talking about the history of Christmas caroling. The word “carol” comes from the Old French word carole, (cahull), which meant a circle dance with singing. She provides the background of caroling from the early days of Christianity until modern times. She then introduces the choral groups that provide the beautiful holiday music you'll hear. The Waves The Waves is a Bay Area youth-led acappella group that blends traditional and modern songs, pushing the boundaries of choir music with creative experimentation. The group aims to bring youth perspectives to traditional choral performance. My guests this week is Olli Chanoff, Director of Programming at the FreshGrass Foundation. So much music I love has its roots in FreshGrass Commissions, from albums like Becky Buller's Jubilee, Sarah Jarosz's Blue Heron Suite and Aoife O'Donovan's All My Friends, to instrumental works by Sierra Hull, Jerry Douglas and Jacob Jolliff. So I was delighted to get the opportunity to chat to Olli about how FreshGrass goes about commissioning these works, why they support the FreshGrass Foundation's mission and what the process is like. We also talk about FreshGrass's fantastic work to support and promote roots music and artists, including their festivals, FreshScores film commissions and their involvement in the Steve Martin Banjo prize.I really enjoyed this conversation - I hope you do too!Find out more about FreshGrass's mission and what's coming next at https://freshgrassfoundation.orgHappy picking,MattSend a message to Bluegrass Jam Along! Greetings! It's new-episode Thursday, and I'm pleased to say that Dan Perez was my guest for Episode No. 141. Dan is in four bands: 1) a smallish trio outfit with his brother; 2) Whiskey Mash Band; 3) Helping Phriendly Bluegrass Band; and 4) The Kaw Valley Hop Pickers.Dan's silky bass notes in each of those conglomerations don't entirely comprise him, though; he's a son, a sibling, a Phishhead, and a husband (I think he said).I had Dan's Whiskey Mash bandmate, Billy Brady, on for Episode No. 65, so check that one out if you missed it (but not before you get into Dan's episode).Dan and I chewed the fat for an hour or so, and it was solid-good times getting to know him; I learned a bunch, had some laughs, and enjoyed Dan's good-vibe energy. Naturally, we talked about a few of Dan's favorite albums, which were these:The White Album (1968), The BeatlesJohn Hartford's Aereo-Plain (1971)A Live One (1995), PhishJames Brown's The 50th Anniversary Collection (2003)Epic list, really. A perfect mix of familiar with glad-to-know-yas.Note: My gaffes for this conversation include calling it "Tahoe Jam," when it's actually called "Berkeley Jam," and citing "Chalkdust" when it shoulda been "Tweezer" (in regards to the 2012 Phish performance at Starlight Theater in Kansas City.Anyway, I'd tell you to give Dan a Facebook follow, but he doesn't really post there, so plug one or all of those band names into your search bar, and you'll get there.Thank you, Dan. I appreciate the time. And thank you to those of you that read these, listen, etc.Cheers.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained within this episode. Thornaby Football Club's committee is facing criticism after they announced that the Teeside-based club would be dropping all of its women's section. First team manager Abbey Lyle tells Clare McDonnell what this means for the women and girls in the club, the support they've received since, and what it says about grassroots women's sport. Clare also discusses the issues with Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, former Paralympian and Chair of Sport Wales and the CEO of Women in Sport, Stephanie Hilborne.Clare talks to the Canadian writer and social activist Naomi Klein about her book Doppelganger, now out in the UK in paperback. The book is a result of her being mistaken for another Naomi – Wolf, for years. Naomi Klein uses her doppelganger as a metaphor to explain many of the issues facing the modern world, from climate change and politics, to obsession with wellness and the ways we parent our children. British writer Lucy Foley began her career writing historical fiction before making an extremely successful switch to crime and thrillers, and with New York Times bestsellers The Paris Apartment and The Guest List under her belt, Lucy has sold more than five and half million books. She joins Clare to discuss her latest novel, The Midnight Feast, which takes place during the opening of a luxury wellness retreat and explores the clash between the insta-ready super-rich and some very disgruntled locals.Grammy-award winning American folk singer/songwriter Aoife O'Donovan has released three critically-acclaimed solo albums, is co-founder and front woman of the string band, Crooked Still, and is also one third of the all-female group I'm With Her. Her latest album, All My Friends, is inspired by the passage of the 19th amendment and the evolving landscape of women's rights in America over the past century. She joins Clare to discuss the themes and to perform live in the studio.Presented by Clare McDonnell Producer: Louise Corley
Aoife O'Donovan is a Grammy Award winning artist. She performs and records solo, as well as with Crooked Still and the trio I'm With Her.“All My Friends” began as a commission from The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra which resulted in 5 songs on the 9 track record. The three other original songs were commissioned by the FreshGrass Foundation. A commission celebrates the centenary of the 19th amendment, which first granted American women the right to vote.

Coincidentally, long-time friends Aoife O'Donovan and Dawn Landes both have new albums with strong feminist themes, so I (Cindy) wanted to interview them together and talk about WOMEN. Aoife's album, All My Friends, is specifically centered around Carrie Chapman Catt, a prominent leader in the Suffragist Movement, and her work in the fight for the 19th Amendment. Inspired by speeches and letters, one song, War Measure, is even based on a letter of support from Woodrow Wilson to Chapman Catt. This album also marks the biggest project Aoife worked on with her husband Eric Jacobsen, who conducts the Orlando Philharmonic and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. It's also the first record she's released since becoming a mother. Of her Daughters song she says she sings "as a modern woman, not wanting to leave the fight to the daughters of our daughters."Dawn Landes, also a mother, has a more broad focus with her new album The Liberated Woman's Songbook. The album features songs from the 1971 songbook of the same title to inspire second wave feminists' women's liberation movement and modern feminism of the 1970's. The songs on Dawn's album span from 1830 (Hard is the Fortune of All Womankind) to 1970 (There Was a Young Woman Who Swallowed a Lie as well as Liberation, Now!) showcasing how women of the past expressed political activism in the struggle for gender equality. Both Aoife and Dawn released their albums during Women's History Month, which leads to a discussion of what that means to each of them. We also talk about what is on their protest signs at the march, the Taylor Swift movie, gender stereotypes and, of course, all the waves of feminism. When thinking about the 19th amendment, we acknowledge that this only allowed WHITE women to vote. That leads to talk of how suffragists and feminist protest songwriters, like Meredith Tax, contributed to and gleaned inspiration from the civil rights movement. Aoife and Dawn are legends! We start with what their internal dialogue was like at first when undertaking these ambitious and important projects and end with Aoife putting Barbie on blast. All and all, this one's a winner. Aoife O'Donovan's new album, All My Friends, came out of a request for the singer-songwriter to write music commemorating the centennial of the 19th amendment. The result is a record in tribute to suffragist Carrie Chapman Catt. O'Donovan joins us to perform songs live in our studio.
On this episode, Carmel Holt welcomes back singer-songwriter Aoife O'Donovan to SHEROES to celebrate the release of her fourth solo album, All My Friends: a timely and ambitious new collection of songs whose origins began with a commissioned work for the Orlando Philharmonic to honor of the centennial of the 19th amendment and inspired by one of the central figures in the women's suffrage movement, Carrie Chapman Catt.

Emily Rau is an Assistant Professor of Digital Humanities at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and the editor of the Willa Cather Archive. In this episode Emily reads her essay “I Might Be in Love with All My Friends” from the 2023 “Love & Intimacy” issue of Wildfire. Emily's story is about sensuality mixed in with a lot of milestones and steps in a breast cancer experience that we haven't really heard before at Wildfire. The Minneapolis trio Barbaro grows out of the American bluegrass tradition, but the key words there might be “out of”, as Barbaro doesn't race through banjo breakdowns and flashy fiddle solos, although they can do those things. The band is something of progressive version of bluegrass – using traditional instrumentation like fiddle and banjo, but drawing inspiration from electronic music and writing songs that may sound pastoral and folky but which often carry a bit of a bite. Barbaro plays new songs from their rootsy chamber music album, About The Winter, and chats about horse racing, in-studio. Set list: "Subtle Hints", "Gardens", "All My Friends"

Mark Hugentobler's unexpected journey led him to become the academy principal at the Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison, Utah, following a successful career in education. Contrary to his initial perceptions, he discovered a prison system devoid of hope and functioning dysfunctionally. Recognizing the desire for change among inmates, he championed education as a means of providing hope and purpose. During his eight-year tenure, enrollment at the prison academy soared from 200 to nearly 1,200 students, showcasing the potential for transformation within a flawed system, all while highlighting the need for attentive ears to the stories of those incarcerated. Prison inmates need a structured path to rehabilitation that leads to responsibility, accountability, service, purpose, and hope. This process should last the full term of their sentence. If fully implemented, Governor Gary Herbert's ASCENT Program would sharply reduce inmates' re-offenses along with the prison's entire population. He talks to Will about the writing of the songs Broken, Busted, Bloody, and All My Friends are Crazy, struggles with addiction both personally and in his family, how the classic album Sunshine in a shotglass allowed the band to play over 200 shows a year for several years, performing solo, how studio owners can get additional work from licensing and sync work, the new 500 Miles single I Want Mine, and Will's observation of a beautiful guitar hanging on Ryan's wall leads to an amazing and touching story of Ryan's collaboration with a Kentucky music legend. Today I'm talking with the band Califone's founding member Tim Rutili. Califone began 25 years ago as a solo project after the dissolution of his previous group Red Red Meat in Chicago. You may have heard his collaboration with Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock, Ugly Casanova, or his ambient rock group Loftus. Tim has continued to do sporadic collaborative efforts over the years, but Califone has been a constant having released 15 albums as well as a bunch of singles and EPs. Their experimental take on Americana, musique concrete and indie rock is unlike that of any other group around. On May 19th, 2023 they are releasing a new album called Villagers on Jealous Butcher Records. I spoke with Tim about live performances, the new material, the group's previous album Echo Mine which was a score to a dance piece, their experiments with live improvised silent film scoring, the virtue of acting like a baby, writing and directing the film All My Friends are Funeral Singers, and several of his other projects over the years. Tim Rutili spoke with me earlier this year from his home in Los Angeles.Low Profile is supported by you on Patreon and also receives in-kind support from these independent Olympia businesses: Schwart'z Deli, San Francisco Street Bakery, Old School Pizzeria, Rainy Day Records and Scherler Easy Premium Shitty American Lager from Three Magnets Brewing Company.Instagram: @lowpropodcastFacebook Community: Low Profile Listener HubPatreon: patreon.com/lowprofile

We know Jesus. We know our friends. But do our friends know that we know Jesus? As followers of Christ, it can seem daunting to try to share the love of Jesus with those around us, but in reality, the life we live is our ministry. In the debut of Revive's newest learning series, All My Friends, Pastor Stephan helps us to reflect on our closest relationships; how do we make sure we show the love of God while avoiding the pit-falls of being ‘unequally yoked'?

You've read the book "All My Friends are Dead" by Avery Monsen and Jory John, focusing on a little dinosaur that has lost all his loved ones. Well, for Velma Barfield, that book is reality. Velma Barfield grew up in rural North Carolina. When she was 17, she got married and had a happy life with her husband and two kids. But when both herself and her husband ended up with chronic pain that they self medicated through either drugs or alcohol, Velma's life was shrouded in Death. By the time Velma was 46 years old, she had lost one husband to a house fire, another husband to heart failure, a boyfriend to a car crash, her father to lung cancer, her mother to the stomach virus, and her fiancé to the flu. On top of that, Velma worked as a nurse to the elderly, and she lost three patients that she cared for. But it was soon revealed that Velma might not be as innocent as she seemed. Listen to this week's episode as Zoey shares the full details of how Velma turned from sympathetic nurse to being a prisoner on death row.But first, robin tells us about Arizona's Red Ghost for her something spooky.Sources: https://hauntedhospitality.wordpress.com/2022/12/20/ep-90-death-follows-velma-barfield/Visit us on Social Media!
