The best workshop I attended at this years PENZ conference was the team from King's College describing some of the approaches they have with students working towards their scholarship portfolio. One key strategy that occurs late in term three was a Dragon's Den style pitch, requiring students to share and describe their selected topic! This unique take on sharing to a group and receiving feedback was a hit during the workshop and I thought it would be worth getting Alexandra Smith who is the HOD of Health & Physical Education at Kings College. If you teach Scholarship PE, you cannot afford to miss this episode! You can get in touch with Alexandra via Twitter.

Throughout this episode we talk a lot about social media and how it can be used effectively, we touch on tips for integrating more technology in meaningful ways throughout our practice, but the key take away lies in Henry's use of hype videos at the beginning of a topic or unit. We mention Instagram a lot in this episode, feel free to add and follow Henry as well as my own account. Henry shares some fantastic games and PE related content on a regular basis.

David also touches on his involvement within a Sport NZ pilot project which looks at some of the themes mentioned above. I strongly believe that as Physical Educators we are provided with an opportunity to build, foster and develop leadership more so than any other learning area. However, leadership is not something that comes natural to many people, nor does the ability to effectively teach it to a young person! What was exciting for me during the recording of this vlog was some of the insight Joel provided around this area. He really challenged the way I approach leadership when working with my students and gave me several ideas to take away and reflect on as I look at how I can be a better teacher for my students. Have a watch (or listen) of the episode and see what strikes a chord with you, then dtermine how you can transfer that learning or take away into the classroom or your teaching environment to build and foster leadership with the young people you work with. As mentioned toward the end of the episode, Joel is running an excellent two day workshop titled "Life by Design" which focuses around discovering your purpose, building decisiveness, gaining clarity through your vision, and developing the courage to act. If Joel has inspired you at all through this episode, please check out the landing page to his workshop here. Check out his Facebook page too!

In the first week of the school holidays Jordan and I were fortunate enough to fly down to Dunedin to attend the 60th Physical Education New Zealand conference! We felt that this would be a good opportunity to sit down and have a discussion about what we enjoyed about conference, our key take aways and learning, and to share a few stories for people who didn't get to attend. Attending PENZ conference is always a highlight for me and it's great to meet and network with a number of like minded educators who are passionate about PE and movement. Lots of shout outs during this episode including the crew from Kings College in Auckland discussing their amazing scholarship programme; Hastings Boys PE department and their approach to building character among their junior students; a dodgey debate moderator; our new PENZ President Celia Fleck; a couple of water polo players, and a random guy in a kilt! As mentioned in the introduction, Dale Sidebottom and I are running two more workshops this term with a focus around gamification and game based learning. We are hitting up Hamilton on Monday the 20th of August, then making our way down to Christchurch for Tuesday the 21st of August. Check out the links as we would love to see you there! All too often we get caught up in what the "professionals" have to say about how we should teach, but forget about the young people we are in front of every day. They have a voice, and opinions about how they want to learn and what works for them. We should be seeking feedback from them all the time! Matt and Collin interview the founders of the Billion Mile Race. Here is a little more information about the Billion Mile Race: Do students at your school walk or run? Those miles belong in the Billion Mile Race. Perhaps your students walk and run throughout the year as part of a regular program. Those miles belong in the Race. Does your school participate in a walk-a-thon or 5K? Tally them up and put them in. What about walk-to-school? Those count too. You get the picture. Not running but want to get started? You've landed in the right place. We've got you covered. We know that thousands of schools have experienced the benefits of adding walking and running to the school day. Active kids simply do better - better in the classroom, better attendance, better health and fitness. We want thousands of more schools to experience the same. That's why we are uniting the efforts of schools across the nation to walk and run one billion miles. Yep, that's right, billion with a 'b'.
