Faith That Returns: Recognizing God's Hand in Our Lives

Pastor Stephen Feith takes us on a profound journey through three powerful narratives from Luke's gospel that reveal what authentic faith looks like in daily life. Beginning with the story of ten lepers healed by Jesus, we discover that while all ten received physical transformation, only one—a Samaritan—returned to express gratitude. This singular act transformed his experience from mere physical healing to complete salvation. The stark contrast challenges us to examine how we respond to God's work in our lives: do we walk away with the blessing, or do we return to worship the giver? The sermon explores the tension between the "already" and "not yet" nature of God's kingdom. When questioned by religious leaders expecting political dominance, Jesus makes the radical claim that "the kingdom of God is already among you." This statement reframes our understanding of how God's reign manifests—not primarily through visible power structures but through transformed hearts. While we await Christ's unmistakable return, we're called to represent that kingdom now through how we prioritize our lives and engage with the world around us.Through the parable of the persistent widow, Feith addresses one of faith's greatest challenges: continuing to trust when prayers seem unanswered. Unlike the unjust judge who relented from annoyance, God's timing serves perfect purposes. The delay isn't negligence but divine wisdom. Jesus concludes with a haunting question that resonates through centuries: "When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?" This isn't questioning whether God will act but whether we will remain faithful while we wait. The message culminates in a vision of what Madison Church could become—a community marked by recognition of God as the source of all blessing, readiness for Christ's return even amid life's distractions, and persistence in prayer regardless of apparent outcomes. Imagine a church that radiates gratitude in an ungrateful world, walks with expectation amid cynicism, and prays with relentless trust when others have given up. Such a community wouldn't just experience personal transformation but would transform its city and beyond for Christ's kingdom.Support the showIf you enjoyed this episode, consider subscribing to Madison Church on your favorite podcast platform. In a May 1976 column in the Boston Globe Howard Zinn wrote “Memorial Day should be a day for putting flowers on graves and planting trees. Also, for destroying the weapons of death that endanger us more than they protect us, that waste our resources and threaten our children and grandchildren.” Sadly his column in the Globe was discontinued soon after. And even more sadly his words are evergreen. Veterans are still returning from foreign wars with lost limbs, bodies and souls. If an honest history is ever written of the U.S. shock and awe war on Iraq it may not be believed. Remember: weapons of mass destruction, axis of evil, mobile chemical labs, slam dunks, Curveball, smoking guns, mushroom clouds, cakewalks, liberators, regime change and mission accomplished? The architects of the war: Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Feith, Wolfowitz, and others should be doing time instead of having a good time. Today, Iraq is a broken country. Nothing will bring back the hundreds of thousands of dead. The U.S. owes Iraq reparations for the destruction it has caused. But being the global superpower means you never have to say you're sorry or face justice. The permanent war economy feeds on conflict and strife. Is it utopian to imagine a different future? What if the most difficult part of restoring a relationship wasn't mending the broken bond, but rather admitting that you were wrong? This episode is a deep dive into the human psychology behind being wrong and how our denial can often lead to more heartache and destruction than the initial mistake. We examine the compelling story of a cult from the book "Mistakes Were Made (But Not By Me)," whose faith in their leader only strengthened after their doomsday predictions failed. Admitting our mistakes is a difficult yet necessary step in restoring our relationships and maintaining our sanity.Relationships, like ships, require constant attention and direction. An unattended ship will inevitably head towards an iceberg, much like unprocessed emotions can bring about the downfall of a relationship. Despite the effort required, we argue that working to restore relationships is a worthwhile endeavor. But what happens when a relationship is damaged beyond repair? We've got you covered there too, offering insights on navigating these choppy waters. As we wrap up, we look towards self-awareness as our guiding star. Drawing from the teachings of Jesus and interpretations of Dallas Willard, we provide a fresh perspective on mending relationships through self-awareness. Moreover, we discuss practical steps to help nurture this skill, emphasizing the importance of approaching this journey with humility and grace. We believe self-awareness, though often overlooked, is a key ingredient in fostering connection and restoration. So, join us as we uncover the power of admitting our wrongs, nurturing our relationships, and embracing self-awareness. That's exactly what Megan and Stephen did when they moved to Madison, Wisconsin, with a mission to create a community that fights loneliness and isolation while connecting people with God and each other. Despite being told that a fast-growing or large church would never work here, they believed Jesus goes to the dark places and wanted to be his hands and feet in the city. One common belief we encounter is that if people simply read the Bible, they'll become believers. However, an atheist lawyer from the Freedom from Religion Foundation disagrees, arguing that the road to atheism is littered with Bibles that have been read cover to cover. Let's talk about Jesus' Kingdom. Jesus is a king of a different kind of Kingdom. He is the king of a Kingdom overflowing with goodness and perfect peace. It's the only Kingdom story that will not end in tragedy.Even when we pray for someone, and they're not healed, or when we pray for ourselves and don't get the promotion, or when we worship and don't feel God's presence, whatever it might be, something still happens. We should not forget that prayer is ultimately about connecting with God and having fellowship with him regularly. As we pray, we become changed. The disciples saw this happen when they saw Jesus pray. It wasn't just miracles and healing and peace. They saw something different about Jesus and wanted to be more like him. When following Jesus and picking up all of his habits, the one practice that they wanted to learn was how to pray like him. Jesus responded to his disciples by teaching them a prayer Christians have been reciting and using as a model prayer ever since. You might have noticed we ended The Lord's Prayer last week. Others might have seen an asterisk at the end of verse 13. You go-getters who noticed went to the bottom of your Bibles to find out what it meant. And at the bottom of your Bibles, most say something like, "Late manuscripts add 'For yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.'"We're bringing this up because this part of the prayer did not appear in Matthew's earliest manuscripts. It's a footnote today. Translators of the Bibles we use are trying to be transparent and let us know only the later copies include this line. Is there a reason to panic? Take a breath; everything we've learned thus far is still valid. It's not a pin in a theological grenade. This part of the prayer is about surrender. It's about wholly submitting to the Kingdom of God, to the power of God, and to God's glory. Praying this line in the prayer, what shows up as a footnote in many cases, is an opportunity to express to God we are giving him everything we have to offer. All this brings us to the last word of the prayer. "Amen" is the word we typically use to end a prayer, but it's much more than a nice ending. It literally means: "Yes, I agree!" It's an empathetic way of voicing agreement. When we're praying for someone or something and declare amen, we're signing off with emphasis. There's power in amen. Let's continue to take steps closer to God through prayer. Amen is not the end. It is just the beginning.Jesus's Kingdom is forever established in victory. His Kingdom is not one of domination and propaganda, and its path differs from the typical path. It's a journey that simultaneously shatters our instincts and expectations while resonating with our core. It seems totally foreign but strangely familiar. It's the road back home.Support the show

None of us genuinely enjoy admitting when we've blown it. There's a lot of shame when acknowledging that we're wrong. This stunts our spiritual growth and connection with God.We're in the fourth week of a series called Pray Like This… We're taking The Lord's Prayer and breaking it down line-by-line to learn about different tools and ways to pray. Today, we're talking about confession. Which means we've got to talk about the s-word: “Forgive us of our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us” (Matthew 6:12, NLT).Sin is the actions and thoughts that create space between us, God, and other people. Sometimes sin is objective. “Do not murder” is pretty objective. Murdering is a sin that creates space between you and God. Other times, sin is more subjective. The answer could be yes, depending on who you are; it could be no, depending on who you are.The Bible isn't a giant cosmic rulebook. It's the story of God. In that story are people and our sins. We need forgiveness. That's the humble part of Christianity. Being a Jesus follower is recognizing and acknowledging that we can't fix ourselves on our own – we're just not good enough. God does the work of redemption for us through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Our faith is not about doing something; our faith is about something that has been done. If you could have saved yourself, Jesus could have saved the trip. Author Pete Greig writes: “Our greatest need and God's greatest gift are the same thing: the forgiveness of sins.”Unfortunately, many respond to sin by denying it or dwelling on it. Too often, we live in denial for long periods and then feel like God is distant. We wonder why did God Leave us? God didn't leave anyone. We took small steps away from God every day by denying our wrongdoings. It was a little journey for an extended period. Confession can help close the gap again. If you feel far from God, confession is the prayer for you.Other times we dwell on our sins. Some of us deny it, and others of us obsess about it. I'm more on this side of it. I will think about my mistakes. All the things I said that I shouldn't have said or how I should have said that differently, or how I should have handled that situation differently. The beautiful thing about confession is it's just giving it to God.When it comes to confessing our sins. It's not about feeling robbed. It's not about feeling dead. It's not about feeling destroyed. If, when confessing to God your sins, you feel any of those things, you're confessing to the wrong entity. When we confess our sins to God, we should feel more alive. That's the power of confession.Support the show

Today, we're studying the line within the Lord's Prayer where Jesus says, “Give us the food we need today…” This has been more commonly called “our daily bread.” It's a phrase that doesn't hold much meaning for most of us. “Giving us our daily bread” seems like the most insignificant part of the prayer.Petitionary prayer is the most commonly associated with prayer. Prayer means many things to many people, but at its most straightforward and apparent, prayer is about asking God for help. Petitionary prayer is simply asking God to meet our needs and, sometimes, our wants. What we're talking about today is a tool that most of us have already been equipped with and are already familiar with. Still, we need to take the prayer further. Jesus instructs us to pray like that. When Jesus teaches us to pray for our “daily bread,” he instructs us to pray for the tangible, the immediate, and the insignificant things. It seems silly, or selfish even, to pray for something like a good night's rest, or about that fight you had with a friend last week, or for the energy to finish a project at work when other people are battling something as serious as potentially life-threatening illnesses. And yet, Jesus tells us to pray for something as simple as the food we need. He teaches his followers and us that reliance on God is not just for the big problems. He doesn't say, “When you pray to God, think about the biggest, most challenging, the most problematic aspect of your life and bring that to God.” Instead, we're instructed to think about something quite ordinary, like getting hungry and needing food, and bring that before God.When we come to God and pray for ourselves, we're nurturing our relationship with God. What do you ask God for? What does this speak about your relationship with God? What kind of relationship do you have with God? When we come to God and ask him for daily bread, we're moving toward a more authentic, genuine, and deeper relationship with a God who is interested in every aspect of our lives, not just the significant parts.Asking for daily bread also acknowledges dependence on God. We have a dependent relationship with God. You may disagree with that, and I would understand why. Dependency on others is really hard, even when we have a good relationship with them. It's hard to put ourselves in a position of dependence because it often makes us feel guilty or ashamed. We've been taught that if we have to depend on others, we have done something wrong. That's what we think. It's not right. We are dependent on God, and we are dependent on other people. That's not bad. Praying to God to give us today the food we need is both a way to ask God to provide the essentials for life and a way for us to express dependence on God.Petitionary prayer is a prayer that draws us closer to the heart of God. When we begin to pray for our daily bread, we begin to see God more often. Every single day. We become more aware of the miracles every day, the things that we don't think, with something that we feel are too small, forgot to do. And as we begin to recognize those, we realize there's nothing too small for God to do.Support the show

All of us have skills or abilities we wish we had. This includes the disciples of Jesus. We see all over the Gospels the disciples coming to Jesus and asking specifically for him to teach them something. The one we will talk about for the next month and a half throughout this Lent season is when they asked Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1)The disciples wanted to pray better. They've seen Jesus go away to pray often and have witnessed many signs, wonders, and miracles. This has prompted them to say they want to pray like him. They say, teach us how to pray.Prayer is a core practice for followers of Jesus. And yet, it's something that many of us struggle to do regularly. We want to pray more, so why don't we? It could be because you don't know where to start. How do we know if we're doing it? We're distracted. We can be encouraged today by the disciples' questions because they also knew what it was like to be busy.Jesus responds to their question in Matthew 6:9-13, “Pray like this: Our heavenly Father, may your name be kept holy. May your kingdom come soon, and may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us the food we need today, and forgive our sins as we have forgiven those who sin against us. Don't let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one.”This prayer, known as the Lord's Prayer, is mighty. During this new series, we will present the idea that prayer is like a toolbox. Within the toolbox are different tools. Some projects in our lives require different tools, and yet, most of us grew up only being armed with one tool, one way to pray. When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.Perhaps you don't pray more often because you only have one tool, and it's not equipped for the projects, the situation, and the circumstances in your life. We need to begin to see that prayer is a toolbox.Right from the start, we learn something fundamental about the nature of prayer. This word for “father” is exceptional. When Jesus teaches us to pray to our “Father,” he shows us an entirely different picture of God. He says we can come to God as though he's our parent. Our image of God is critical. Pete Greig wrote a book called “How To Pray,” and wrote in it, “How we view God affects everything about everything.”The next part of the line is: “may your name be kept holy.” We need clarification about the word holy. It seems strange to us. We tend to think of legalism. It means set apart. For something to be holy is to be set apart. Holiness is not based on what you do or don't do. It's a state of being. We're told the very essence of who God is holy. God is set apart. It means God couldn't sin, even if he wanted to. It's so far from his nature. It's so against who he is. This is good news for all of us, and even better news if you had an absent parent growing up. God is our heavenly parent; just as important, he's holy. God can redeem what a parent being means. The form of prayer that helps us express that God is a good parent is adoration. It's a tool in the toolkit. The Book of Common Prayer describes adoration this way: “Adoration is lifting the heart and mind to God, asking nothing but to enjoy God's presence.”Adoration is about God inviting us to enjoy being with him. It causes us to step back and gain perspective. Adoration acknowledges our problems but forces us to look up instead of down. After I worship, my problems don't look that big anymore. If we're going to worship God, adoration requires us to lay down all of our burdens. It requires us to open ourselves up. This is our surrender.Support the show

Jesus is known for his profound wisdom and paradigm-breaking teaching. Even 2,000 years after Jesus's life, death, and resurrection, his followers are challenged to live in the ways he has called us. One of those countercultural teachings is found in Acts when he is quoted as saying: “It is more blessed to give than it is to receive" (Acts 20:35).Jesus says we're robbing ourselves of something better and settling for something less when we don't give. Giving is good. We know that. Still, many of us struggle to live a life of intentional and proactive generosity. The most predominant reason is that many live with a “scarcity mindset.” It's a thought in our minds that we don't have enough to be generous right now. We think we will be generous after we pay off the debt or get a raise at work. This is the final part of a three-part study called Finding Financial Freedom. This is easily the most challenging topic we cover every other year at Madison Church Talking about finances makes people feel guilty or ashamed, and money has been a source of conflict and pain for almost all of us.But that's why we do these series.God has something better for us.Tithing comes from a Hebrew word that means 1/10. We see tithing happen in the first few pages of the Bible, though not called “tithing” by name, with Cain and Abel. They're supposed to bring the best of their livestock and harvest to God. Then we see it written down in Levitical law that you've got to tithe. It's explicitly commanded in Malachi 3:10,: “‘Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, so there'll be enough food in my temple. If you do, the Lord of Heaven's Armies will open the windows of heaven for you. I'll pour out a great blessing. Try it. You will need more room to take it all in. Put me to the test.”We're told repeatedly to NOT test God, but when it comes to tithing, God gives us permission. This is the only time you can try God in the Bible. This is not a get-rich-quick scheme. God's blessings are greater than money and possessions. If looking for an affirmation from Jesus and this new covenant that we live under, we find one in Matthew 23:23, “Yes, you should tithe, but do not neglect the more important things…”Jesus says there are more important things than tithing. His examples in this passage are mercy, justice, and faith. Jesus is saying, however, if we can't get generosity right, we may as well forget about something important like justice. Many will think giving 10% is crazy and impossible. To do that, we have to totally and completely 100% rearrange our lives around God.That's the point.Becoming a more generous person is about total surrendering. You must each decide in your heart how much to give, and don't give reluctantly or in response to pressure, for God loves a person who gives cheerfully. – 2 Corinthians 9:7Giving is good, and may God help us grow in the grace of giving. If you want to give back to God through Madison Church, you may do so here: https://madisonchurch.churchcenter.com/givingFor more information about our nondenominational church, visit https://madisonchurch.comRead the "Finding Financial Freedom" blogs here: https://madisonchurch.com/category/messages/finding-financial-freedom/Support the show

In 1988, a man named William Bud only had $5 in his checking account when he bought some lottery tickets. As fate would have it, Bud won the $16,000,000 jackpot. Bud spent and mismanaged his winnings to the point that he had to auction off the remaining annual payoffs to pay off his debt in less than 10 years. Once again, he had only $5 in his bank account. In an interview with the Washington Post, he said, “Everybody dreams of winning money, but nobody realizes the nightmares that come out of the woodwork… and the problems. I was much happier when I was broke. I just want peace of mind.”Debt is StressIt's quite a reminder to us today that more money will not solve our financial problems. For most of us, the pain in our lives isn't the number of resources we have.In many cases, our ability or inability to make a plan and stick to that plan is what causes hardship.Debt is bad because it causes stress. Money is a source of anxiety for many, but debt is the biggest offender. According to the American Psychological Association, debt within one's finances is the leading cause of stress in the United States.Sometimes debt is because of circumstances beyond our control. You might have a lot of debt right now, and it might have been out of your control (i.e., medical bills insurance didn't cover, unexpected job loss in 2020, etc.) Let's acknowledge that.Debt, Stress, & the BibleIt's speculated that about 1/3 of the Bible, directly or indirectly, talks about money or possessions, which is excellent news for all of us. Debt is a financial and spiritual problem.I love what Pastor Craig Groeschel says: “You can wander into debt, as a lot of us have, you can wander into debt, but you'll never wander out of debt. You can stumble into debt, but you'll never stumble out of debt. You can mistake your way into debt. But you'll never mistake your way out of debt.”Two Prayers to Help With DebtTwo prayers will help you take some critical next steps. We begin with prayer when we're talking about doing hard things, like getting out of debt. The first prayer: “God, please give me self-control.”For a lot of us, we live way above our means. We know that we should prioritize our finances and just don't do it. So we need this second prayer: “God helped me make a plan.”Getting Out of DebtSome of you have never made a budget before. That's the first step. Create a budget this week. Here are some resources. Our church offers the Financial Peace University by Dave Ramsey course. I understand that some people have problems with Ramsey, and that's fine. I found other great options by Googling “how to make a budget.”Others of you have a budget. My challenge for you is to evaluate it. When was the last time you did that? Do you know with certainty if you're staying within your budget? Is it time to update it because your circumstances have changed? If you're one of the only 16% of Americans who are defined as highly disciplined financial planners, please consider serving your church family by co-leading a Financial Peace University course with us this summer. If you find yourself somewhere between the second and third steps, keep up the excellent work! You're doing the right things, don't give up, continue to do it, and see who you can help. Sometimes we do the right things and need to remember why we started doing them.Support the show

We started a new three-part series called "Finding Financial Freedom." What the Bible says about money and possessions is one of the most challenging topics we cover every other year at Madison Church. They're also the most talked about subjects in the Old and New Testaments. God knew finances would be a source of anxiety, fear, and stress for people. It is possible to experience financial freedom without being a millionaire. Our series aims to teach you some of what the Bible says about money, help you draw closer to God, and have more financial peace. The "win" in doing this study is to hear people say they objectively feel better about their financial situation because of what we've discussed. There was an interesting study conducted by Harvard Business School. They interviewed 400 American millionaires and asked how much money would make them happier. 87% said more would make them happier. It did not matter whether a person had $100 million or $10,000,000, they all thought more is better. It's not just millionaires, though. We all think we'd be more satisfied in life if we could have a couple more dollars an hour or 10% more in the bank. This is the mindset that "more is better." Having more money and possessions is sometimes better, but it always comes with a cost. What is most important to you in your life?  You might say your faith, family, or friends. And yet, there's such a discrepancy in how we live. There's a disparity between what we value, family, friends, faith, and how we live ("more is better").Let's confront that discrepancy. Think about how you chose the last job offer you accepted. It's the job you have right now. If you had multiple job offers, did you take the one that gave you the most time with your family or paid better? How's that stack up against what you say you value?Whatever your motivation is for wanting more, know that the answer is not found in acquiring more. That longing in our hearts can only be met by God. It won't be met by a particular job title or a certain annual salary. No number of cars, trips, or dollars in your bank account will make you feel loved. Only God can do that. There's hope today for wherever you're at. Whether you are a millionaire, have no money, or are in debt, there's hope for all of us today. Financial freedom is a destination that doesn't cost a million dollars to get there. It just takes you to step toward God's plan for your life.Support the show

Have you ever seen the Disney movie "Finding Nemo?" "Finding Nemo" came out 20 years ago. For those who haven't seen the film in 20 years, it's about an overprotective dad clownfish whose son gets taken from him. The dad goes on the adventure of a lifetime across the ocean, looking for a son.Meanwhile, the lost son finds himself at a dentist's office in Sydney, Australia. The other fish freak out when Nemo, the little fish, is thrown into the fish tank at the dentist's office for the first time. Their home is not sterile anymore. The other fish scrub everything, including Nemo, because their space has been tainted by the ocean. After they clean everything up, they're actually happy Nemo's there. They're excited they've got a new friend in the tank. This scene is fascinating. How often is it that when someone comes into our "circle," we initially freak out? Think about the Christian Church. We have buildings, and they're lovely. Then someone new comes in, and we know we should be excited because we read in the Bible that Jesus is excited. But everything is set up the way it should be to us, and new people mess that up...So we try cleaning the outsider up politically or religiously, or socially. We've got to ensure that they don't say bad words. We've got to verify they're listening to the right music and only watch the TV shows we watch. But that's not how Jesus lived.Jesus is the God of the ocean. Jesus didn't live in a sanitized tank. Jesus went to where all the people were, where life happens. He lived among them, and he did life with them. That is the example we are supposed to follow. And now it's our turn. As we follow Jesus, we're gonna see other people find and follow Jesus. It won't be because any of us are super saints. It'll be because we keep our "circles" open.Do that however long it takes. However long you have to be a friend. And even if they don't choose to follow Jesus at any point, love them anyway because Jesus loves them until the end, even if they reject him. That's the most challenging part of this study. I believe God has put people in and around our lives that he loves deeply and dearly and died for. You don't have to be a super extrovert. There are many people in our lives whom Jesus loves and has been working through. Our task is to keep our "circles" open.Think about your family "circle." It's always open. Somebody has a new baby, gets married, or gets divorced. It's a changing "circle." As a spiritual family, MC should be an ever-changing, open "circle." "Circles" should not be closed. As we continue to move away from the pandemic, we must re-emphasize the importance of going out and getting together during the week. Reach out to someone and get together. And if or when you do, you're doing things God wants you to do.Some people don't know about Madison Church, but they know you and, more importantly, trust you. People need to learn about what we have to offer. How will you use your influence? Will you show them that it is possible to have a positive experience in a church community? If we do this, well, by this time next year, by this time next month, there will be people experiencing community who are lonely today.Think about the "tank" you live in and how you have worked hard to keep it clean and organized with your values. I want you to get out of the tank and back into the ocean where you belong because Jesus is the God of the ocean.Support the show
