I had the pleasure of speaking with Craig Harrison - former British Army soldier, author, and Maverick Survival School course leader - not being quite sure how his story fit with the other conversations I've had over the past 3 and a half years. And he was a perfect fit. How he spoke about his life with PTSD, the importance of communicating and connecting with others, and the restorative power of time in nature was brave, gentle, open, and generous. You can check out themavericksurvivalschool.co.uk/ and instagram @cohcraigharrison to learn more about what Craig is up to today, and read his military memoir The Longest Kill: The Story of Maverick 41 for insight into what brought him to where he is now. PS: For those of you who caught this, you're right - I mistakenly referred to a book as The Artist Within when it really should have been The Artist's Way.

The Quiet Earth The Quiet Earth is a 1985 New Zealand post-apocalyptic science fiction film directed by Geoff Murphy and starring Bruno Lawrence, Alison Routledge and Peter Smith as three survivors of a cataclysmic disaster. It is loosely based on the 1981 science fiction novel of the same name by Craig Harrison. We explore the importance of an opening image and closing image, the world without people and some ways in which New Zealand and Australian films portray tense encounters. In science we ask the question: How long would it take for the Earth to go feral without humans? Welcome back Dial Effers! This episode is huge and you won't want to miss this one! Incredible Two-Headed Podcast host Aaron Lowe returns to our A-Z series, and this week we are on the letter Q, and the film is, The Quiet Earth (1985): a lo-fi science fiction film from New Zealand based on a novel by Craig Harrison. But before we get to that on the episode, I reveal my Top 10 Films of 2022; I don't say much on the films, as I have talked about most of them on the show with guests on this month's bonus best of series. I talk about All Quiet on the Western Front, The Batman, Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, and more. Around the 40 minute mark, we begin talking about the film for this episode. This was my first time watching Geoff Murphy's science fiction classic, The Quiet Earth, which is considered New Zealand's first major science fiction film production. If you enjoyed the films derived from Richard Matheson's I am Legend, then you will definitely enjoy this one, as it deals with "the last man on earth" device, but diverges from those films, by focusing on the human aspects of survival, loneliness, and despair. The story follows three survivors after a cataclysmic event set off by "Project Flashlight." The first 36-minutes, are a solo performance by Bruno Lawrence, who plays Zac Hobson, one of the individuals involved in "project flashlight." At his lowest point, two survivors show up, first, Joanne (Alison Routledge), followed by the leather-clad Api (Pete Smith), the third piece to this love triangle. The first act of the film has some of the most striking visuals and an incredible performance by Lawrence as he slowly loses his mind and falls deeper into loneliness. The Quiet Earth is a visually striking science fiction film going for big ideas but remaining sparse in its execution. We watch Bruno Lawrence traverse desolate city streets with the emptiness of the world around him accentuating his loneliness. Furthermore, the film's soundtrack was redubbed to remove sounds of the real world adding to the loneliness of our three characters and isolating the audience into a world where there is as much mystery as there is wonder. This one is worth your time, and is currently available on multiple platforms. I watched this on one of my favorite free-with-ads app, Tubi. Take a listen to our conversation, this one is going down as one of my favorites on the show, and we cover a lot of the film, which maybe will entice you to watch! Thank you for reading (and thank you for listening). Follow us on Instagram (@Dialfpodcast) - this is where I'm most active; shoot me a message or comment and let's talk about film. Dial F for Film is a podcast about the love of movies and host's -- J. Carlos Menjivar -- attempt to watch 1001 movies before he dies. A lover of lists and film, Carlos is a firm believer that all film lists should be tackled with one goal in mind: completion. Steven Jay Schneider's "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" is the subject of this podcast. Each episode features one guest and five movies from the massive list, compiled into themed lists by the host. Guests each week will select one category without any prior knowledge as to what films are included. Once a category is chosen, Carlos reveals the five films and the viewing begins. The guests then come on Dial F for Film via Zoom and the discussion begins.

This has reignited the debate about whether the company should either be privatised, part privatised, or moved. David spoke to Maritime Union General Secretary Craig Harrison about why selling the port would be a bad idea.

A damning report into the Ports of Auckland's automation programme has found multiple failings, leading to inadequate management and governance. The report found the project suffered from poor risk assessments and a failure to consult experts within the Port itself. The automation program was dumped this year, after costing ratepayers more than $65 million. It also found the business case was unsatisfactory, and that the project was blighted by personality clashes and cultural differences. Craig Harrison is the Maritime Union National Secretary and joins Nick Truebridge.

My guest this week is British Army sniper and veteran Craig Harrison. Craig was known for the longest kill in the world at just over 1.5 miles. Since leaving the army, he has battled PTSD and our conversation highlights the struggles we all go through with our mental health. This is a very important episode to highlight mental health and show you that there is help out there, no matter who you are. It is the darkness that we find the light, and by having these open conversations, we learn that human connection is a tool for healing.
On this episode I was honoured to talk to former Corporal Of Horse Craig Harrison. Craig held the record for longest confirmed sniper kill in combat from 2009 - 2017. We talk about his journey as a lad growing up, his time in the British Army right upto the challenges he suffers on a daily basis with PTSD. Iam also currently in talks with Craig about taking part in his new survival school, where he teaches lots of bushcraft & survival techniques over a weekend. Please check out his web page for more details www.themavericksurvivalschool.co.uk/
On the eve of International Workers' Memorial Day the government has announced there will be an investigation into deaths at New Zealand ports. Pressure was mounting after a man was killed at Lyttleton Port on Monday and another died at the Ports of Auckland last week. Port companies are also being asked to review their operations - and there could be regulatory changes. Craig Harrison is the national secretary of the Maritime Union of New Zealand. He talks to Nick Truebridge.
Unions are calling for action after a person died yesterday at Lyttelton Port - just six days after the death of Atiroa Tuaiti at the Ports of Auckland. The Maritime Union, the Rail and Maritime Transport Union, the CTU and the Merchant Service Guild are calling for an inquiry into port safety. Maritime Union of New Zealand National secretary Craig Harrison spoke to Corin Dann.
There are calls for a national inquiry after another worker is killed on the job at Auckland's port. The worker from private stevedoring firm Wallace Investments died after falling from a height while working on the Singaporean flagged container ship Capitaine Tasman this morning. The accident is now being investigated by Maritime New Zealand. It's the fourth death in recent years around the port. Former port boss Tony Gibson stepped down from the top job in May last year. His resignation followed a scathing health and safety review into operations there and called for safety to be prioritised over profits. Craig Harrison from the Maritime Union talks to Lisa Owen.
Big changes are coming to the way we get fuel into, and around, the country - and there are warnings about the huge implications of getting it wrong. The price of petrol is already burning a hole through many people's pockets, and with rising inflation and a war in Europe ignited by energy giant Russia, the pain at the pump won't be extinguished any time soon. Amid this smoldering situation, comes the transition of Marsden Point next month from oil refinery to import terminal. Instead of product being refined here and shipped to ports around the country, it's estimated 175 big tankers will bring in what we need each year - roughly one pumping and dumping into our supplies every two days. The two tankers that have been chugging New Zealand-refined product around the country's coastline, the MT Kokako and MT Matuku, will be taken out of service in a few weeks. And this change will affect how we meet our obligation to keep a certain about of fuel in reserve. Kathryn speaks first to Craig Harrison, president of the Maritime Union which is part of the Save Our Tankers campaign - concerned about the impact of these fundamental changes. She'll also talk to Julian Hughes, Z Energy's General Manager, Supply.
Patrick Bet-David sits down with Sgt. Craig Harrison. Craig Harrison is a former Corporal of Horse in the Blues and Royals, a cavalry regiment of the British Army, who held the record for the longest confirmed sniper kill in combat, at a range of 2,475 m (2,707 yd).
