Shoving Wilco
Peter Blackstock on No Depression, Wilco, and the Alt-Country Revolution

Shoving Wilco

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 9, 2024 41:09

In this episode of the Shoving Wilco podcast, host Todd Rossnagel and co-host Tim Arnold sit down with Peter Blackstock, co-founder of the influential music magazine No Depression. Peter shares his experiences from the early days of the magazine and its deep connections with the alt-country movement that Wilco helped define. From the origins of the No Depression name to the critical role the magazine played in shaping the musical landscape, this conversation is a must-listen for any Wilco fan. Peter reflects on the impact of No Depression as both a magazine and a cultural touchstone, tracing its roots back to the 1990s when Wilco was just beginning to emerge from the shadows of Uncle Tupelo. We talk about everything from the AOL forums that united fans to the evolution of alt-country into a genre that continues to influence musicians today and we dive into the role No Depression played in Wilco's development, exploring how the band's connection to its fans through the magazine and online platforms contributed to its lasting success. Whether you're a longtime Wilco fan or new to the band, this episode offers a rich history of how the band and the magazine grew together. Local COVID stats are straining at maximums with new records in overall hospitalizations, and in patients on ventilators - and also, over the last week, a gradual increase in COVID deaths. Austin Public Health expects these numbers to be further exacerbated by the return to live school. Governor Greg Abbott says he's testing negative, 4 days past his initial positive test, while State Rep. Troy Nehls of Houston becomes the latest Texas lawmaker to come down with COVID. Austin Rep. Gina Hinojosa charges on MSNBC that House Republicans are not being truthful about attendance to establish quorum in the chamber, as both sides gear up for what's likely to be a nasty battle over redistricting. No Comply Skate Shop gets a reprieve and cooperation from Austin Community College. Local real estate data may possibly show a beginning of a return to relative stability in the market. Austin FC gets a much-needed win over Portland. Peter Blackstock noticed almost no compliance with masking rules at Gary Clark Jr.'s debut of Moody Amphitheater at Waterloo Park. The Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival returns to its in-person state on September 12. Miami's The Salty Donut makes its Austin debut on South Congress on Friday. Hancock Golf Course is noted in a New York Times piece on walkin' and golfin', with input from Kevin McKinney (we think) of Soulhat.

Writing about music is like dancing about architecture... But we are going to go ahead and try anyway! Thank you for joining Peter Blackstock, Tiffany Walker and Bobby Bridger in the second half of our tribute to the one and only Butch Hancock. As Terry Allen says “He’s made his life completely about the making of amazing things ... photographs, film, video, outlandish architectural propositions, elaborate ballpoint drawings, handmade journals filled with writings, sketches and scrawls ... and always, the songs.” In this episode we look at the effect architecture has on his songwriting. We also learn about his work as a river guide on the Rio Grande and Rio Chama for Far Flung Adventures. And we take a look at his epic group of songs entitled “Split and Slide”. Chris has been wanting to do this podcast for a good long while. After all, we have been following his career since 1990! Would you believe we were his backing band in 2014? True Story. Something about Butch just appeals to our love of stoic songwriting geniuses! Please enjoy this podcast, follow us on SoundCloud and Apple Podcasts, and feel free to share with your friends. Thousands of viewers from around the country tuned in. Expecting to play for a handful of “Austin homies,” he was “shocked” by the response, he told the Statesman on Sunday afternoon while combing through the 17,000 comments on his Facebook post. He’s decided to make the Saturday night jam a regular affair. The party will kick off at 6 p.m. and run till 10, and to keep the (virtual) event family-friendly, he plans to use radio edits of all your favorite rap tunes. facebook.com/DJ-Mel-48330349120 — D.S.S. Every year, both the official and unofficial worlds of South by Southwest collide for 10 days, and even though it might be exhausting for “I Love You So Much” hosts Omar L. Gallaga, Tolly Moseley and Addie Broyles, they look forward to it every year. Omar puts this year’s festival in context with previous years, explaining why the pop culture side of the festival grows every year even as the cost of these parties and activations go up. Addie explains why there are more food panels outside the festival than ever this year, including a free four-day event at Trinity Hall that is a partnership between Land O’Lakes, National Geographic and Microsoft. With morning yoga sessions in the conference session, SXSW has always had an element of wellness, but nothing like this year’s Wellness Expo, which Tolly says is the latest example of the “GOOP-ification” of SXSW. (Thanks, Gwyneth.) Austin360 music writers Deborah Sengupta Stith and Peter Blackstock tell us whether the muted nature of this year’s SXSW Music is worrying local venue owners and if the lack of big-brand showcases might be a good thing for up-and-coming artist discovery. Joe Gross weighs in on this year’s SXSW Film Festival, which includes Wes Anderson’s new star-studded animated film “Isle of Dogs,” the return of “Roseanne,” a visit from “Star Wars” star Mark Hamill and a lean into TV with “Westworld” and “This Is Us” cast/creator panels. All weekend, Tolly, Addie and Omar are strolling the streets of downtown Austin to make short podcast segments to take you into the festival. We’ll be hitting up some of the television activations and keynotes, as well as a party or two. Keep up with us at @loveaustin360 on Twitter and through the @Austin360 Instagram page. Full-length shows will return on March 23. Until then, you can catch up on recent episodes at austin360.com/loveaustin360.
