Amy Edwards: Overcoming Mental Health Struggles and Losing 10 Stone in 12 Months Content Warning: This episode contains discussions of mental health struggles, including suicide attempts, that some listeners may find difficult. Please take care while listening, and seek support if needed. Episode Summary: In this episode, I had the privilege of speaking with Amy Edwards, a remarkable woman from Scarborough who has achieved something truly inspiring. Amy has lost over 10 stone (140 lbs) in under 12 months, all while juggling the challenges of being a mother of four young children and overcoming serious mental health struggles. We dive deep into her journey, discussing how she transformed her life with a calorie deficit, running, and an unwavering commitment to her family. Her story is a powerful reminder that no matter where you start, change is possible. Amy shared her background, explaining how she and her family moved from Surrey to Scarborough in 2020. As a mother of four kids under three, she talked about how the demands of raising young children impacted her health, both mentally and physically. She bravely opened up about her lifelong struggle with OCD, disordered eating, and multiple suicide attempts. Amy explained how these challenges shaped her relationship with food, starting in her teenage years and continuing into adulthood, as she battled both mental health issues and weight gain. The turning point for Amy came when she faced the reality of her weight gain—a bridesmaid dress that didn't fit and photos from a wedding that shocked her into realising it was time for a change. She decided to take control of her health, not only for herself but for her children, who were her biggest motivation. Amy lost 10 stone by committing to a calorie deficit and using her Fitbit to track her activity and food intake. She also started the Couch to 5k program, which gradually built up her fitness, despite the challenges of balancing motherhood with the demands of a healthier lifestyle. Amy also shared her experience with Slimming World and why it didn't work for her. While she acknowledges that it helps many people, she found that the restrictive nature of the diet negatively impacted her mental health, leading her to realise that a more balanced, sustainable approach was necessary for her well-being. During our conversation, Amy emphasised the importance of mental health in any transformation. She explained that improving her mindset and working on her mental health were crucial steps in her journey toward losing weight and feeling better about herself. Since her weight loss, Amy has achieved incredible things. She ran the London Marathon and is now training for an Ironman event. Her story is a testament to the power of determination and self-belief. It shows that when you commit to yourself and refuse to give up, you can achieve extraordinary results. Thank you SO much to Amy for joining me on the show and being this week's Weight Loss Warrior and make sure you follow her amazing journey on Instagram >> @4under3_marathonmum Learn more about your ad choices. In this podcast, David Rieser (K&L Gates) and Amy Edwards (Holland & Knight) will discuss the challenges and uncertainties of incorporating PFAS compounds into Phase I environmental assessments, including how to detect their presence and manage associated risks in real estate transactions. Now that EPA has identified two PFAS compounds as hazardous substances, ASTM's most recent Phase I methodology (ASTM E-1527-21) allows environmental professionals to include those PFAS compounds as part of their Phase I assessment. Yet it's not clear how they determine whether PFAS are present or likely present at a property, let alone whether that presence is the result of a past or threatened release. On the one hand, PFAS can be associated with certain locations, such as airports which used firefighting foam and certain industries such as manufacturers producing non-stick material and products. At the same time, PFAS have been found in surprising places with no clearly identifiable sources, such as Antarctica. While Phase Is are always more art than science, the level of uncertainty around PFAS makes the process especially fraught. Buyers and sellers will have to decide whether this is an issue they want addressed and consultants will be concerned about their risks of addressing or not addressing PFAS. These choices may affect the ability of the buyer to assert an innocent landowner or bona fide purchaser defense to a CERCLA claim regarding the costs to address PFAS. Unscrupulous parties may look to take advantage of the uncertainty to obtain favorable leverage and unscrupulous consultants may use the uncertainty to sell unnecessary services. In short, this is a good time to hear from experts in Phase I requirements and nuances. Amy Edwards has participated in the ASTM Phase I process from the beginning, has a wealth of environmental transactional experience and has read more Phase Is than she cares to admit. David Rieser is an experienced environmental attorney and has written extensively on transactional issues. Together they intend to talk through the PFAS issues in Phase Is in the hope of finding useful approaches to deal with these thorny issues.

The self-employed have many motivations for choosing or accepting their working arrangements. A business model that taps into the desire for people to “work for themselves” can mobilize the capital, networks, and labor of large numbers of people at comparatively low cost. Whether through franchising, direct-selling, or other methods, major firms became enablers, advocates, and beneficiaries of self-employment. The latest research by Dr. Amy Edwards, senior lecturer at the University of Bristol, focuses on the tangle of personal and corporate interests around self-employment. While the top-down element of the franchise or direct-sales relationship is evident, the personal motives of the self-employed franchisee or direct-sales representative could make the arrangement mutually profitable. Bringing her family's story into conversation with archival materials, including the Avon collection at the Hagley Library, Edwards explores the cultural as well as political and economic aspects of self-employment in late twentieth-century Britain. In support of her work, Dr. Edwards received funding from the Center for the History of Business, Tehcnology, and Society at the Hagley Museum and Library. Ep. 184: Getting Real About Alcoholism, Learning in Isolation & Bringing Women Together with Mindy Hofmann Quote: “I learned that being honest and vulnerable, like sitting here talking to you like this, is how you can help people; because hopefully someone's listening.” – Mindy Hofmann Summary: Do you know someone who has battled addiction, or alcoholism? Well, today we are braving how to support them, and learn from a certain women's story how change and transformation is possible after hitting rock bottom. Mindy Hofmann, community leader and podcast host, and I were introduced by a mutual friend. Obviously, we have so much in common! She has had me in her hot seat, but it wasn't until I had her in mine that I heard her truly dynamic story. Mindy shares her incredible journey from addiction to recovery, offering insights into the darkest moments of her life, how motherhood impacted both her fall and rise, and the transformation that led her to embrace authenticity and serve others. In this episode we talk about… The distractions of the glamorous life growing up in Hollywood. The hard truth of hitting rock bottom & coming to terms with addiction to alcohol. The power of healing through creativity, such as the performing arts. The importance of sharing your personal story for yourself and for others. Bio: Mindy Hofman is the founder of Women of Austin and the creator and host of The Women of Austin Podcast. Mindy is also the Vice President of the new Women of Austin Foundation, helping to support women in the community. She is a self-proclaimed women's rights champion and strongly believes in the transformative power of women supporting women. Mindy and her family moved to Austin, TX in 2017, where she faced important life decisions involving her going to rehab and getting a divorce. In the divorce, she lost her business and had to start over. While it was the hardest thing she ever did, it was the best thing that ever happened to her. After some time and soul searching, Mindy realized that she had to follow her heart and find a way to bring women together to share their stories and create community, connection, and collaboration. So, after months of planning and encouragement from her friends, she created Women of Austin and the Women of Austin Podcast. Connect with Mindy: Follow her on Instagram @mindy.hofman. To be clear, she was only representing her own views on the episode. Some key takeaways/thoughts from Amy's point of view:A potential Northstar metric for how data driven you are: how often are people getting, interpreting, and actioning on the data themselves versus waiting for an analyst to tell them? Hard to measure but it's where you want to head, where more and more people are making the effort to interact with data.If you want a data product/use case to succeed, the absolute most important thing is an engaged consumer stakeholder - someone who really, really wants the data for a use case and how they want it. If someone isn't leaning in, consider not building something for them. Scott note: this sounds controversial but it is reinforced in almost every data mesh conversation I have.Similarly, if you are building a data product, you should make sure you are very aligned with your stakeholder. Don't be a request dumping ground, build iteratively together. To understand your progress towards being data driven, you need to actually measure things to track changes over time, your progress. You almost certainly will not find the perfect aspects to measure at first and what you measure will evolve. But it starts with measuring something. There's nothing wrong with starting with a using a success metric that you know isn't going to be something you focus on when a data product matures. As products go through phases, so too...

In this episode, Mark and I are tackling a unique topic that we've never really covered before! It's the topic of alcohol and specifically how it can affect our lives and our relationships if we aren't careful. If you grew up in a conservative Christian household, you may not have had any exposure to alcohol growing up and that may leave you wondering if it has a place in your life at all as an adult. Whatever your background or past experiences with alcohol, this is an important topic as we determine what is good and healthy to have in our daily lives. To help us unpack this topic, we asked Matt and Amy Edwards to join us. Matt and Amy are the hosts of the podcast, An Alcohol-Free Marriage. Amy is also a certified coach who focuses on one-on-one coaching and offers a group coaching program called The Alcohol Free Spirit Experiment. They happen to live just a few miles from us in central Illinois and we are excited to have them on the podcast talking about this very important discussion around alcohol. In this conversation, you'll hear:The circumstances that led each of them to give up alcoholWhy moderation may not be the answerHow we condition our brains to turn to alcoholAnd much more! This is such an important topic and I hope this conversation is an encouragement as we navigate the topic of alcohol.Show Notes: https://jillsavage.org/matt-amy-edwards-153
