Randy watches a fake television special, "Give Me Pity"- and liked it. Clark praises "Blackberry", which leans more tragedy than biopic. Russ shares his journey with the new series, "Dead Ringers" and ties in his recent experience with childbirth. Also, Clark and Russ discuss their "Big Shark" screening experience with Tommy Wiseau - included at the end of the episode is the Q&A from the screening. Who is Bill Small?Bill Small is no stranger to diversifying his skills; he's made his living as a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, Mystiquero, entrepreneur, artist, producer, vocal coach, business and personal coach... all facets that combine into a potent musical force evident on his latest release, Call Me Lucky.Bill grew up in a musical household where everyone could sing, just a stone's throw from the Big Apple. From Sinatra and swing to show-tunes. Todd Rundgren to Pink Floyd. Growing up in the 70's with FM radio and 2 older sisters to steal records from, he caught the music bug bad. Part of his teen years were spent learning everything he could about theater while working as a student performer and intern at The Whole Theater Company in Montclair, NJ. When he wasn't doing that he was writing songs and.....you guessed it, playing in bands! Bill moved around some during high school with his family, and then on his own after graduation, and always found a band to play music with. Playing in bands has been a constant for most of his life. After 2 years studying voice at at Berklee College of Music in Boston, and another couple of years living in Jersey and working in New York City, he decided to make a change. His family had lived in a magical place called Austin, TX before he was born, and when he was very young, they used to take family vacations to Texas. He had been hearing about all the great music there and of course, being in his "Guitar Slinger" phase, the lure of Stevie Ray was too hard to resist. Bill moved to Austin along with two great friends and fine musicians from Jersey, and they found themselves performing all over Austin in the early nineties as Heavy Weather.More bands came and went in the nineties (Radio Thieves, Stringbones), and a solo record entitled Singin. There was a move back to Boston, then to Nashville, a divorce and then finally a move back to Austin in 2004. As Bill puts it, fate intervened for his longest running band gig to date. “I got a call from my friend Marcus Eldridge, another old friend from Texas who had recently returned from Nashville. He was having lunch with my friend John Greenberg, and Walt Wilkins. I heard Walt in Nashville and we met once briefly, and I was a big fan of his music. Walt needed a band for a gig at Gruene Hall and John was kind enough to remind him that I played the bass. So the Mystiqueros were born on stage at Gruene Hall in the spring of 2006. Best band I've ever worked with. Period.”Since then, there's been more records produced and or engineered, lots of miles, lots of shows, and lots more to come. Call Me Lucky is Bill's latest solo offering...a soulful and thoughtful album full of plenty of stomp and groove. Coupled with Bill's unmistakable vocal style, it makes for a journey just as entertaining as his life story. Even before the pandemic, Bobcat Goldthwait had one of the most fascinating careers in comedy history with, as he says, "selling out" first as a stand-up, then finding his way to be a beloved indie director with work ranging from World's Greatest Dad to God Bless America to Call Me Lucky to Jimmy Kimmel Live. Goldthwait continued along his own path as he moved from LA to the woods in Illinois to maintain his "day job" of doing stand-up comedy in order to make his small, but fiercely loved movies. On this week's TCB Field Report, Bobcat talks wonderfully in-depth with TCB's Jake Kroeger about the ever-changing landscape of comedy through film/TV/stage through all the decades he has been in comedy and what lies ahead in the decades to come. It's another documentary, nerds! This week, we look at Bobcat Goldthwait's film on the life and work of comedian, activist and author, Barry Crimmins. We have a chat about stand-up comedy, forget some well-known comedians' names and generally have a coupla goofs and gaffs. T/W: This documentary deals with some heavy stuff, so if you're planning on watching it, please be aware that it contains mention of rape and child sexual abuse. Take care of yourselves, friends! We love you!
This is a vulnerable and transparent episode this week. I’m sharing a FB LIVE from my Rise & Shine morning show, because I truly believe it’s for one of you to hear. I’ve been called a lot of things in my life, good and bad. But one thing you cannot call me is lucky! Because I do not serve a God of favorites. I do not serve a God of luck. It’s time that we as women start speaking that we are blessed and highly favored from the moment we wake up until we close our eyes. So excuse me if I preach a little in this episode. But I’m passionate about you living your greatest days, walking out the calling and life God has for you. I’m still living, that means God is not done with me and he’s not done with you either. In April, in my exclusive group called The Inner Circle, I’m teaching my course, “The Law of Attraction.” I’m inviting YOU to join! You can find all the details at Robbiepage.com. Tune in every Monday to a brand new episode, or join me and my guests on my YouTube channel every Thursday at 3pm/cst as we record the podcast LIVE! Enjoy this week’s podcast, friends!

Wherein we are pre-Wednesday gig recording, FCUK is instructed, we learn DI leaves just in case t-shirts in his car, and many puns occur. We discuss where men work, DI and MB both had their cars washed, stolen Woolies bags, do we need to hear from the pilot?, airport security. Also; MB does an accent, we harken back to Ep 123, DI's chicken ’n’ neighbours story, DI suggests a new segment, "sick to the back teeth”. If you remember Bobcat Goldthwait’s “extreme” standup-comedy persona, it might be difficult to reconcile with his career as a prolific TV and movie director. He’s made some great films like World’s Greatest Dad with his pal Robin Williams, and Call Me Lucky, a compelling documentary about one of his mentors, comedian-turned-activist Barry Crimmins. Now he’s presiding over an unpredictable anthology series on TruTV called Bobcat Goldthwait’s Misfits & Monsters. Leonard and Jessie were delighted to meet the real guy behind the comic mask and the creative force behind so many interesting TV and movie projects.
The blues-based singer-songwriter who has written for Bonnie Raitt and other artists started out in the epicenter of the NY/Boston folk scene among contemporaries like Bob Dylan and Eric Von Schmidt reminisces about his career, the art of songwriting, jamming with blues legends like Son House, his battles with alcoholism and what success means both professionally and personally. Acclaimed singer-songwriter Chris Smither joins us on this week's Fretboard Journal Podcast to talk about his new double-album, Call Me Lucky. Stories often emerge from scribblings in notebooks. But we also find them tumbling out of pantries, rolled amid rumpled shirts in suitcases and spewing forth from text messages with friends. This week we feast on offerings from brilliant writers and one man who’s spent 50 years honing his songwriting craft.Mohsin Hamid’s Mystical Exits —1:35We knew author Mohsin Hamid’s novel, “Exit West,” was going to be a good read. His prior best-sellers create emotionally rich worlds that create pathways between global events and personal revelation. But when we realized “Exit West” has been shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, and chosen as this year’s Multnomah County Library Everybody Reads selection, we went running for the bookstore. A graceful love story about two refugees traveling the world through magical portals, it unpacks some crushing realities of the global refugee crisis, without losing sight of the personal losses of his characters. We’re listening this week to an excerpt of Think Out Loud’s full interview with Hamid, recorded live at Literary Arts.Call Him Lucky: Songwriter Chris Smither’s Lessons From the Road —12:52For 50 years, singer-songwriter Chris Smither has been honing his craft. Smither grew up in New Orleans, then moved between Paris, Mexico and the South, before eventually settling in New England. That wide map seems to give his songs a fluidity, but it’s the southern influence that really gives his songs their depth and color. Smother was in Portland for a recent date at the Alberta Rose Theater. opbmusic caught up with him for a pre-show soundcheck and conversation with singer-songwriter Robin Bacior. Smither’s new record is “Call Me Lucky.”Process, Past, and Presents with Stacey Tran — 20:22Poet Stacey Tran has a vibrant writing process. In addition to getting verse down on paper, she also collages words, phrases, and fragments in ways that may or may not end when her poems go to publication. For her new poetry collection, “Soap for the Dogs” (Gramma Press), Tran committed to paper prose poems, fake haiku, as well as experimental forms. A student of language, fluent in English and Vietnamese, she delights in how we use words and how we change them. Tran tells us about some of the touchstones for her work.Sitting Around A Tender Table — 33:26When Stacey Tran is not writing poems, she’s making space for others to tell their stories. It’s been a year since she first invited friends for a pot-luck style session of storytelling, with an emphasis on family, food and identity. Tender Table has become a hub for women, femmes, and gender non-binary people to find community. This week, Stacey invited two of her favorite storytellers from the series, Mercedes Orozco (former director of UNA Gallery) and Leslie Stevenson for a slightly-condensed (but very tasty) version.World Premiere of “Manahatta” at OSF — 43:11Oregon Shakespeare Festival is premiering a new play this spring by Mary Katherine Nagle — a playwright, a formidable lawyer, and a citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. It’s the story of a securities trader dealing with her own indigenous history, while her family struggles to hold onto their home during the Great Recession. "Manahatta” draws fascinating parallels between colonial American history and the financial crisis. Liam Moriarty of Jefferson Public Radio takes us behind the scenes in Ashland.Portland Tropical Gardens, A Small Correction — 49:34A couple of weeks ago on the show, we misidentified some of the artists working on the Portland Tropical Gardens. Xi Jie Ng, Michael Stevenson Jr, Erika Dedini, and Shawn Creeden are graduates of different programs within Portland State University’s School of Art and Design. Rachel Hines is a Senior Instructor in Art Practices at PSU. Also, Ralph Pugay is not teaching in the Art and Social Practice program; he is a visiting professor of Art Practice. OPB regrets the error.
For the 14th episode of Documenteers, we cover just about all ranges of emotions watching the 2015 biographical documentary "Call Me Lucky" by Bobcat Goldthwait. Bob Sham and Angela are brought into the humorous and dark world of Barry Crimmins. The comedian/activist who we lost just late last February. The emotions get heavy as we discuss easily the most disturbing crime so far. Documentaries can be sad. This film is also deftly funny and fascinating. It's streaming on Netflix right now. Go watch it and cry about it with us. RIP Barry Crimmins.

Such acts as Steven Wright, Paula Poundstone, Bobcat Goldthwait, Kevin Meaney, Jimmy Tingle and many, many others cut their comedic teeth in the rooms Crimmins started at shows he produced. Conversation #138, recorded on December 10th, 2014. Bobcat Goldthwait is a comedian, writer, director and actor. He's appeared in the film SCROOGED, SHAKES THE CLOWN, HERCULES and the POLICE ACADEMY films. In his recent years, Bobcat has rebranded himself as a skilled writer/director, churning out solid films like SLEEPING DOGS LIE, WORLD'S GREATEST DAD, GOD BLESS AMERICA, WILLOW CREEK and CALL ME LUCKY. Hail Satire! is hosted and produced by Vic Shuttee.
The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Comedian/Activist/Political Satirist Barry Crimmins. Barry is a legend. A great mind, an author and activist and political satirist. He has been an important voice of passion and reason since the 1970s. He has stood before thousands of audiences of every size and type and told them the truth with wit and wisdom, with anger and compassion. Barry was a towering example to me when I started doing standup at age 18. He fostered the comedy scene that I cut my teeth on and later became my friend. More than all of that, I am his fan. I love his voice. He makes me laugh. He's always right. There has NEVER been another comic like him. The great thing about comedians is that they get better with time. And I feel very lucky to be bringing you Barry's first standup special. I produced it and directed it and he worked incredibly hard over the last two years on the road shaping it and putting it together and he left every ounce of it on the stage when we filmed him. When you watch this special, you'll be seeing a great comic and a prime and only example of what comedy is at it's best. You'll see a comedian who cares about what he is saying and who brings integrity and experience and an unmatched skill as a writer to his performance. About two years ago, Bob Goldthwait, a good friend of Barry's, produced a documentary about him titled "Call Me Lucky". It covers a whole other part of Barry's life where he made a huge impact.
Former Air America radio writer and correspondent (2003-2006), social justice activist, internationally renowned political satirist and author of the acclaimed seven stories press book 'Never Shake Hands with a War Criminal' helped bring the Boston comedy scene into the modern age when he founded two of Boston's most fabled clubs: The Ding Ho and Stitches. Such acts as Steven Wright, Paula Poundstone, Bobcat Goldthwait, Kevin Meaney, Jimmy Tingle and many, many others cut their comedic teeth in the rooms Crimmins started at shows he produced. I became aware of Barry Crimmins from watching the documentary Call Me Lucky directed by Bobcat Goldthwaite on Netflix and his interview on Marc Maron’s podcast. Steve reviewed Men in Suits, Call Me Lucky, The Man from UNCLE, and Fear the Walking Dead, while Jason talked about the DC Style Guide, Fotomats, anatomy and art, and the evolution of Mickey Mouse. Movies like woah on this week’s Spoilerpiece. First, Evan teases the book about ‘80s films that he’s been working on with his friend Bryan Krull, prompting a deeper conversation on ‘80s movies. Then Dave shares his thoughts on THE TRIBE because he finally saw it. Evan’s up next to talk about how THE GIFT subverts expectations, before Dave goads him into spoiling the movie’s big twist. After that, Evan and Kris discuss why they weren’t fans of AMERICAN ULTRA (hint: it’s about a stoner secret agent and plotted like a stoner wrote it). Dave follows up by quickly exploring why PEOPLE PLACES THINGS is so sluggish and by-the-numbers. And last, but not least, Kris reviews CALL ME LUCKY, a great documentary by Bobcat Goldthwait about Boston comedian and activist Barry Crimmins.
The one and only Bobcat Goldthwait (comedian, World's Best Dad, God Bless America) is back on the podcast! He talks with Chris and Jonah about the past year of his life, remembering his best friend Robin Williams, and coming up with the idea for his documentary Call Me Lucky. He also talks about tricks he used to play on people while directing Jimmy Kimmel Live and tells stories from his early days of stand up!
Oh, the dog days of summer, and we're here to get you through it. Today's show features an all-star line-up of comedy heavyweight. Gilbert Gottfried is here. Director Bobcat Goldthwait and comedian-author Barry Crimmins discuss the film — which follows Crimmins's political and comic evolution.
This week the guys all agree that they would be better off never seeing another Adam Sandler movie after discussing Dave's op ed on Sandler's project THE RIDICULOUS 6. Then they move on to talking about THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, which Evan forgets to refer to by its full name. Dave likes the film a lot, but Evan and Kris have some issues with it. Next, Dave fills them in on Alex Garland's EX MACHINA, leading Kris to wonder aloud "Why does a robot have a butt?" No one really has a good answer other than sexism. Finally, Kris wraps up by talking about stuff he caught at IFFBoston like WELCOME TO LEITH, CALL ME LUCKY, and THE TRIBE. One of these films almost made Kris lose his burrito dinner because it was "astounding, gripping, and holy shit disturbing." Tune in to find out which one it is.
Screen Talk came to Park City for the Sundance Film Festival this week. On Wednesday, Indiewire partnered with Airbnb for a live recording of the latest episode, which took place in front of a sold-out crowd at the Airbnb Haus on Main Street. Introduced by Sundance Film Festival director John Cooper, the episode opened with Kohn and Thompson discussing this year's festival buzz and their different approaches to prioritizing films over the course of the chaotic proceedings. Taking a cue from the Airbnb Haus' theme of "strangers meeting strangers," they reflected on the value of meeting new filmmakers and encountering fresh visions in the festival environment. Then, they spoke with Crystal Moselle, the director of "The Wolfpack," which is currently playing in the festival's U.S. documentary competition and was recently picked up by Magnolia Pictures. Moselle explained how she found the fascinating subjects of her movie, which revolves around a group of siblings forced to remain indoors for most of their lives while learning everything about the world from the movies. Finally, the hosts welcomed standup comedian and filmmaker Bobcat Goldthwait, whose documentary "Call Me Lucky" is also screening in competition. Goldthwait discussed the intentions behind his project, which focuses on outspoken political activist and comedian Barry Crimmins, as well as the role that Robin Williams played in getting the project off the ground. Goldthwait, who considered Williams his best friend, also discussed why he treasures his longtime friendship with the late actor. Later, Goldthwait elaborated on his newfound affinity for the independent film community. The episode concluded with an audience Q&A.
