I'm trying to help people be less wrong. What I'm trying to do is get people to think and my experience is that most people are putting out fires dealing with quarterly results, annual results, four- or five-year election cycles. There are very few people thinking a generation ahead.” “The thing that's problematic at the moment for a lot of people running organisations is not so much the speed of things, the volatility, or the unexpected events, but the sheer amount of information. I can't pay attention to everything, so to what do I pay attention? How do I pick?” “The one trend organisations should be paying more attention to than anything else is societal ageing and declining fertility. Related to that is ‘the war for talent'. You have a shrinking workforce and moving into a more protectionist era. The fight to attract and retain talent will intensify.”  “People tend to think of the future in binary terms. That something new will happen that will kill something that's been around for a while. But the future is ‘and' not ‘or'. Look at Ukraine, you have First World War trenches on one level, but also drones and satellites.” “I think the future has always been open and we should spend more time thinking what we want it to be, rather than only what it will be.” Richard Watson's books can be found here. Today's Guests are Richard Watson and Stuart Bridges of Inigo This podcast is a really enjoyable encounter wholly because of the unexpected way these two executives decided to conduct themselves. In the build up to an interview like this I usually circulate some sample questions beforehand. This is to get the subjects comfortable and to be able gather their best thoughts before we start recording. But the night before this recording Richard emailed me suggesting that we ditch my list of questions and that he and Stuart should interview me instead. A bit of broking later and we ended up with elements of both ideas. I hope you enjoy it. Listening back it's definitely something different. But then no-one in the 153 Episodes preceding this interview has ever suggested we do any like this. I think what follows is a great advert for the business Richard, Stuart and their teams are building. The two are different, they're original and they're free thinkers who are happy to share their ideas and quite a lot of their own unique personalities. They're clearly also having the time of their lives running a business that is looking to underwrite in excess of 1.2 billion dollars of premium in its third year, which is, perhaps unsurprisingly, ahead of the original plan. NOTES: Richard speaks first. The abbreviations 10-Q and 10-K are respectively a US-listed company's quarterly and annual results, as filed to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Furthr VC leads €1.1M investment in Galway's Ronspot

Furthr VC has announced that it has led a €1.1M investment round in Galway's hybrid workplace management platform, Ronspot. The investment, which also included funding from the Halo Business Angel Network (HBAN) and Enterprise Ireland, will help Ronspot to expand its team and scale globally. Starting out as a corporate parking management solution in 2018, Ronspot has evolved to a three-in-one space management platform designed to make hybrid working easy, while also supporting efficiency in the workplace. The cloud-based application enables users to book car and bicycle parking, hot desks and meeting rooms, as well as manage visitor requirements and other resources including lockers – all on one unified mobile app. Users can see real-time availability, as well as the bookings of their colleagues. From three customers in two countries in 2018, to more than 200 customers in 30+ countries today, Ronspot is on a rapid, upward growth trajectory. The company expects revenues to grow by 400% year-on-year to 2025. The growth has been driven by the widespread adoption of hybrid working models – in a space and workplace management software market that is expected to grow beyond $1.3BN by 2024, supported by Ronspot's continued development of its platform. In the last two years, it has added new features including groups, teams, recurring bookings and single sign-on – resulting in its engineering team more than doubling in the last two years. On the back of its latest funding round and to fuel further growth, Ronspot will create an additional 10 jobs in the next 18 months, bringing its team up to 28 people. The new roles, based in Galway and Dublin on a hybrid or remote basis, will be in the areas sales, marketing, customer success, data security and human resources. The additional team members will help Ronspot to expand in new and existing markets. It is currently taking part in the Enterprise Ireland ‘Enter the Eurozone' programme with the aim of establishing a physical presence in Germany, France, Italy and Spain. The funding from Furthr VC comes from its latest fund, backed by leading Irish technology entrepreneurs and business leaders, as well as Enterprise Ireland. With an emphasis on highly scalable, export-focused software and MedTech companies, the €32M fund has so far invested in 15 companies and is on-track to invest in up to 30 companies by year-end 2024. Michael Furey, CEO, Ronspot, said: “Today's organisations are acutely aware of the need to provide flexible hybrid working solutions in order to retain and attract talent. It continues to be an employee's market and top talent will leave roles, or accept positions elsewhere, if a company isn't doing enough to support the work/life balance that they have become accustomed to over the last two-and-a-half years. We recognised this shift early on in the pandemic and have evolved our solution to become an essential tool in any modern workplace. “Additionally, organisations are starting to review their real estate commitments with an eye on how they can reduce their building footprint and its associated costs, while at the same time increasing their head count with more intelligent management of their office spaces. The days of ‘one desk, one employee' are a thing of the past for many, so it's important that these resources are utilised more effectively in the future. “We are delighted to receive this funding from our investors, who share our excitement for the future of Ronspot. The team at Furthr VC have been working closely with us, offering valuable advice as we prepare for a period of rapid global growth.” Richard Watson, Managing Partner, Furthr VC, said: “Great companies can be born out of uncertain times and Ronspot is an example of this. Early in the pandemic, the team recognised that the world of office work was changing forever and took the company in a new direction to take advantage of this. We are excited to be leading this investment round and look forward to wor...

Furthr VC has announced that it has led a €750K investment in Donegal digital publications creator, 3D Issue. Furthr VC and the Western Development Commission both invested €375K in 3D Issue. The company is using the funding to add 24 new jobs by year-end 2023 and expand in existing and new markets, which will help to grow revenues from €1M to €6M over the next three years. Established by Paul McNulty in 2007, 3D Issue is a technology company specialising in content experience tools for the development of digital publications. Last year, it launched Experios, a multi-level drag and drop content-building platform. Experios creates white-labelled templates for responsive, high-end publications such as magazines, brochures, reports and handbooks, which reshape to fit the reader's chosen device and require only one design for all devices. By adding their company's style guide to the platform, designers can instantly transform Experios into a design studio that enables writers and marketers to quickly and seamlessly add content themselves using company-branded templates. This allows businesses to easily ramp up their, or their clients' content experiences without having to invest in additional design services each time. As a result, users can cut design costs, as well as the man-hours required for those services, by as much as 98%. An export-focused business, 3D Issue has more than 1,500 clients in more than 44 countries. It has worked with some of the world's leading brands including Mercedes, Sony, NASA, Mensa, McGraw Hill, Haymarket and Procter & Gamble. The recent investment will enable 3D Issue to increase its presence in existing markets, while expanding into new ones. It will also support continued innovation at the company, facilitating new and existing product development. Supporting this will be the 24 new roles in design, software development and sales and marketing. Most of the roles will be based in Donegal, as well as remotely elsewhere in Ireland, while some sales and marketing roles will be located strategically in 3D Issue's key markets including the US and UK. The company was one of the first in Ireland to adopt a four-day working week. The funding from Furthr VC comes from its latest fund, backed by leading Irish technology entrepreneurs and business leaders, as well as Enterprise Ireland. With an emphasis on highly scalable, export-focused software and MedTech companies, it is on-track to invest in up to 30 companies by year-end 2024. Paul McNulty, founder and CEO, 3D Issue, said: “This is an exciting period of growth and innovation for our company and we are delighted to have the backing of Furthr VC and the Western Development Commission. We have an established base of extremely large international enterprise customers and the launch of Experios will be significant in helping us to increase our revenues through existing business, as well as new opportunities. “Recently, we helped a publisher to reduce the design time spent on an online publication from 240 man hours to four, while reducing the cost per page from more than €4K to under €70. We will continue to innovate to ensure we are bringing the best service and quality to our customers. “The team in Furthr VC has guided us on our growth journey, offering advice and helping us to identify the right candidates to fill key positions in the business. Their expertise, along with the funding, will be imperative to our company as we embark on this latest phase of our growth journey.” Richard Watson, Managing Partner, Furthr VC, said: “When we established our latest fund, we set out very specific criteria for the types of companies that we were looking to back, and which we believed would deliver the best returns for our investors. As a technology company, with a high performing management team and which is experiencing significant growth in major global markets, 3D Issue fits that bill very neatly. “With the launch of Experios, 3D issue is setting itself apart ...

Furthr VC, previously DBIC Ventures has announced its new name and that its latest fund has grown to €32M, up from €23M. The growth comes from additional funding from existing investors, as well as the addition of 20 new investors to the fund. Furthr VC launched its latest fund in October 2019 with the aim of investing in up to 30 globally scalable software and medical device companies. Since then, it has invested in 15 companies, including IVR testing SaaS company, Klearcom; construction computer vision company, Evercam; and diabetes medical device company, Bluedrop Medical. Initially backed by an investment from Enterprise Ireland as well as 15 technology entrepreneurs, business leaders and private investors, the fund now has 35 private backers. The additional funding will enable Furthr VC to continue to seek and close deals with Ireland's new generation of leading early-stage Irish tech companies. It can make initial investments of up to €650K in a business and as a result of the growth, it can now invest up to a total of €3M through subsequent follow-on investment rounds. Furthr VC changed its name in line with the rebrand of Dublin BIC to Furthr. By forming close, active partnerships with founders, Furthr VC plays a significant role in supporting the innovative entrepreneurs and businesses it backs, while also maximising returns for investors. Through its current and previous funds, Furthr VC has invested in more than 75 early-stage Irish tech companies including digital health company, SilverCloud Health; smart grid company Grid Beyond; and taxi dispatch platform, iCabbi. Richard Watson, Managing Partner, Furthr VC, commented: “We are highly active with our current fund and have completed seven new investments to date in 2022. We are continuously on the lookout for new software and MedTech start-ups as investment opportunities for the fund. “This is our fourth fund, having launched the first seed fund in Ireland in the 1990s. By working closely with investee companies, we help them to navigate the scaling journey and in doing so, create significant shareholder value. We are proud to have the backing of so many top Irish tech entrepreneurs and business leaders, as well as Enterprise Ireland.” Colm O'Sullivan, Partner, Furthr VC, said: “The growth of this fund is testament to the quality of the portfolio we are building and the companies in our pipeline, as well as our strong track record and deep network that includes many of Ireland's leading technology entrepreneurs and business leaders. At Furthr VC, we have a founder-friendly approach, enabling us to form close partnerships with start-ups and provide them with key strategic input to help drive success, which in turn ensures that we are generating strong returns for our investors. “Our new name reflects the ambitious plans that we have for our investors and the start-ups that we are investing in. We are backing companies from seed to Series A stage, with a strong ability to follow on in subsequent rounds, ensuring that we are a vital part of businesses' success stories and Ireland's economic future.” See more stories here.

Returning to the pod for the fourth time, our resident future-thinker, Richard Watson, arrives in fine fettle to guide us through the global mayhem that confronts us all at every turn these days. Richard is a thoughtful, questioning, truth seeking, self-obsessed, neurotic, contrarian writer that, due to luck more than anything else, has ended up being labelled a futurist (NB: correct term is futurologist). Most days he manages to make a good living telling people that everything will turn out OK despite the fact he's not sure himself sometimes. He enjoys thinking about artificial intelligence and what (if anything) makes us human and especially likes drawing ‘maps' that provoke conversation and debate. When he's not doing all this, he can normally be found gardening, trying to book flights to Greece, drinking wine, arguing with his lawn mower, smoking cigars, or pulling dead mice out of his old sports car (they're cute, but they eat the wiring, especially over winter). Oh yeah, and somehow, he has managed to get five books published and blagged his way into both the Technology Foresight Practice at Imperial College London and the Judge School at Cambridge. Not bad for someone that got a ‘B' in English language O-level and failed maths twice. Go figure. Two of his best books are Digital Vs Human (2017), and Future Files (2007). Thanks for joining me for today's episode with Hart Dairy founding farmer, Dr. Richard Watson. Hart Dairy is headquartered out of Waynesboro Georgia and they are, in many ways, setting an example as to how sustainable grass-based dairy farming can be done on a large scale here in the US. As you'll pick up quickly from his accent, Richard ain't from around here … but he has been living and working in Georgia and other parts of the Southern US for many years … bringing with him knowledge and training from his home country of New Zealand where all animal agriculture is primarily grass and pasture based. I hope you'll listen to this conversation because I think … regardless of your role in the food community … you'll get something out of it. Just a little explanation on what you'll be hearing … the first part of this conversation takes place as Richard is driving me around the farm … initially I was intending to use this part of the interview for the article I'll be writing for the upcoming issue of Southern Soil, but once we got rolling I felt like Richard did such a great job of clearly and concisely explaining the reasons that the dairy industry is largely a confined animal operation with corn as integral part of the diet … I asked if we include the interview in it's entirety as the podcast. So, through this conversation… you'll ride along with in the truck and then we'll move out into the pasture and hang out with the girls for the remainder… you will cows moving around and eating and there is a recurring mechanical sound from the central pivot which was nearby. It's early enough in the morning there's still a bit of a coolish tiny breeze… the grass is green, the sky is blue and the cows are happy. Topics include: Confined feeding for cattle - why it's the dominant model in the US for dairy farms Benefits of grazing cattle on pasture all year Cows and climate change - are cows the problem or can they can be part of the solution? The Friday Newsletter |  Daily Gardener Community   Historical Events   1830 Birth of Thomas Edward Brown, late-Victorian scholar, schoolmaster, poet, and theologian from the Isle of Man. Thomas was published under T.E. Brown, and here's a little excerpt from his poem called My Garden.  A GARDEN is a lovesome thing, God wot! Rose plot, Fringed pool, Fern'd grot— The veriest school Of peace; and yet the fool Contends that God is not— Not God! in gardens! when the eve is cool? Nay, but I have a sign; 'Tis very sure God walks in mine.   1833 Birth of Richard Watson Dixon, English poet, and clergyman. Richard was the son of the clergyman, Dr. James Dixon. He's most remembered for that lyrical poem that begins. The feathers of the willow Are half of them grown yellow Above the swelling stream; And ragged are the bushes, And rusty now the rushes, And wild the clouded gleam.   But today, I thought I would share an excerpt from his little-known poem called The Judgement Of The May. Come to the judgement, golden threads upon golden hair in rich array; Many a chestnut shakes its heads, Many a lupine at this day, Many a white rose in our beds Waits the judgement of the May.   1890 Birth of Christopher Morley, American journalist, novelist, essayist, and poet. Christopher also produced plays and gave college lectures. And in addition to all of that, He wrote little sayings, like The trouble with wedlock is that there's not enough wed and too much lock.   And he also wrote Heavy hearts, like heavy clouds in the sky, are best relieved by the letting of a little water.   And then finally, here's a Christopher Marley quote on spring. April prepares her green traffic light, and the world thinks: Go.   1921 Birth of Mavis Lilian Batey, English Codebreaker and garden historian. Mavis served as an English Codebreaker during World War II, and her unique skillset broke the German enigma code, which allowed the allied forces to stage their D-Day invasion. Mavis became a champion for forgotten, yet historically significant, English gardens. She also helped establish garden history as an academic specialty. In 1955, Mavis and her Codebreaker husband, Keith, settled on a farm in Surrey. It was this property that sparked Mavis's passion for landscape history. After moving to Oxford, Mavis and her family lived in a fantastic park designed by Capability Brown. The park was also home to a garden designed by William Mason in 1775. Mavis recalled, We lived in the agent's house right in the middle of Capability Brown Park. But it was William Mason's garden that really got me. We had to cut our way into it. It was all overgrown and garden ornaments were buried in the grass. I knew at once it wasn't just an ordinary derelict garden. Someone had tried to say something there.   Mavis Batey used her wit and determination to become a force in numerous conservation organizations and missions. In 1985, Mavis was honored with the RHS Veitch Memorial Medal for her invaluable work, preserving gardens that would otherwise have been lost to time.   Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation The Magical World of Moss Gardening by Annie Martin  This book came out in 2015, and Pacific Northwest magazine said this about Annie's book: Instead of eradicating this deer-resistant, pest-resistant, rootless, stemless, wonder of a plant, Annni Martin tells us how to encourage and cultivate it.   Well, mosses are near and dear to many gardeners' hearts, and there have been many gardeners who try to grow and cultivate moss to no avail. And that's because moss has some special requirements. Annie writes, In my own garden, I feel angst when mosses is dry out and I obsessively respond to my compelling desire to give them a rejuvenating drink.  And as they begin the saturation process, I regain my own glowing state. As I watch leaves swiftly unfold and colors, magically intensify.   In addition to being mesmerizing, there are many reasons to pursue moss gardening. There are also many environmental benefits. Moss can be a lawn substitute - depending on where you live and your garden set up. If you have a shady property, you should definitely look into mosses as an option.  Mosses are super carbon sequesters. They're great at erosion control and flood mitigation - and they have a built-in filtration system, which means that moss can help reclaim land in locations where cleanup is needed. Now, if Annie's name sounds familiar, it's because she is a moss expert. Her nickname is Mossin' Annie, and she's the proud owner of Mountain Moss Enterprises. I appreciate books like this because you have a true subject matter expert acting as your guide. Annie will help you identify dozens of Moss species, and she'll teach you how to propagate moss successfully. (This is something most gardeners want to know how to do).  Finally, Annie is a master when designing and installing moss gardens. This book is 240 pages of down-to-earth advice on mosses in the garden. Whether you're an experienced gardener or a newbie, you will feel extra confident about utilizing moss - the tremendous green ground cover - with Annie as your guide.   You can get a copy of The Magical World of Moss Gardening by Annie Martin and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for around $13.   Botanic Spark 1821 Death of Napoleon Bonaparte, French military and political leader who ended up ruling over much of continental Europe Last year was the 200th anniversary of his death. One account of Napoleon's final moments reported that,  [He died during a terrible thunderstorm that] shook the house to its foundations and would have alarmed everyone but for the all-absorbing tragedy of Napolean's departure.   In 1815 after his stunning defeat in the battle of Waterloo, Napoleon was forced into exile in the south Atlantic on a little island called St. Helena. A few years before his death, Napoleon became convinced that he was dying of stomach cancer. His doctor Francoise Antommarchi ("Ahn-toe-MAR-she"), the man that would take his death mask, prescribed, among other pursuits, gardening - specifically digging in the garden. And so, on the island of St. Helena, Napoleon briefly took up gardening — and he loved it. Naturally, Napoleon wanted everyone around him - except the ladies - to join him in the garden at Longwood. There, he grew every type of vegetable that thrived on the island. Napoleon installed grottoes, alleys, and paths. And he transplanted trees and improved the soil with manure. When he worked in the garden, history tells us that Napoleon wore a loose-fitting dress and a straw hat. And at one point, Napoleon actually shot Count Bertrand's goat because it was eating his plants. In 2021, the historian Ruth Scurr wrote a short but delightful biography of Napoleon told through the lens of his interest in gardening and naturalism, and it's called Napoleon: A Life Told in Gardens and Shadows. Ruth believes that gardens were important to Napoleon all through his life. But at St. Helena in particular, he was especially motivated to garden after his doctor pointed out that he could create sunken paths to avoid the watchful gaze of his guards: British soldiers. Naturally, it was mostly Napoleon's people who did most of the digging. And although Napoleon's experiment with gardening was fleeting, Longwood House still grows a variety of plants planted by the emperor himself. Now in her book, Ruth also tells a touching story about Napoleon's brief return to Malmaison after his defeat at Waterloo. Malmaison was soothing to the emperor, and it was a place full of memories of his beloved Josephine. Her gardens were filled with fragrant roses and colorful blossoms like Dahlia's long after her death. The painter Pierre Joseph Redouté was a favorite of Josephine Bonaparte and Marie Antoinette. Still, Redouté's paintings of Josephine's flowers at Malmaison are among his most beautiful works. In Ruth Scurr's garden biography of Napoleon, she wrote: The 26th of June [1815] was a very hot day. Napoleon spent it at Malmaison reminiscing about the past. He walked up and down with his hands behind his back in what had once been his personal garden, just outside the library. He also lingers among exotic trees that Josephine has always insisted on planting herself. There were honey locusts, cedars of Lebanon, apple trees, and tulip trees. He visited Josephine's grand greenhouse and remembered there how she checked her tropical flowers every day. It was indeed a grand greenhouse.    Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

The dominant view of evolution is that of natural selection. But is it enough to generate all the complexity we see around us? Natural selection suggests that those organisms who outcompete others survive and end up passing their genes to the next generation. According to our today's guest, Richard, there is another mechanism at play which is something he calls Natural Induction. This view explains how adaptions can arise in biological systems without natural selection. Evolution is the reason why we see all the complexity around us, so understanding it from a new lens is going to be very enriching. == About the guest == Richard Watson is an Associate Professor at the Institute for Life Sciences at the University of Southampton. Is competition really all there is? If you take the word of those who insist that natural selection is solely responsible for all of life on earth, then yes. The story goes that competition drives fitness, that maximizing fitness ensures survival, and that survival ensures your traits become fixed in the population. But that's not the whole story. On the other side of the competitive evolutionary coin, there is natural induction, a cooperative process that balances the competitive aspects of natural selection. On this week's episode, Dr. Richard Watson uses the language of machine learning and artificial intelligence to make a compelling about how our understanding of evolution has misunderstood a key point: The success of individuals and groups depends on cooperation as much as it does on competition. There are two types of journalist – there are those who really don't like or trust anyone they write about and then there are those that are the opposite and seem to like everyone. I am one of the latter – my natural bias is to get a positive vibe from most of the people I interview. Because of this I make sure I try and balance this inbuilt positivity with a reality check from others around me. But now I don't work in a large business any more it'll be you the listener who has to help me out. Beth Singler told us about the different cultural consequences of AI, and how the way we think about the future of AI reflects more about society today than the future itself. John Zerilli shared his views on the consequences of AI for democratic decision-making, and Richard Watson urged us to conceive of the future of AI in terms of ‘scenario planning', rather than predicting the future directly. We cover topics ranging from how to make AI ‘ethical', how the media representation of AI can colour the public's perception of what the real issues are, and the importance of an international AI regulatory system. This episode was produced by Nick Saffell, James Dolan and Naomi Clements-Brod. Annie Thwaite and Charlotte Zemmel provide crucial research and production support for Series 2.Please take our survey. In this episode of #TheNewAbnormal I interview Richard Watson, Futurist-in-Residence at Judge Business School, Cambridge University. He helps organisations to think, especially about emerging opportunities and risks. Particular interests include emerging tech, AI, robotics, education, energy, and water. Richard has written extensively on societal trends and the impact of technology, and has given over 300 talks to various organisations throughout the world. He's worked extensively on scenario planning projects having been introduced to the discipline by one of the founders of GBN. The author of five books about various aspects of the future (inc the scenario process), he's blogged on innovation for Fast Company and written for Copenhagen Institute for Future Studies and McKinsey & Co. Finally, he's also a visiting lecturer at both Imperial College Business School and London Business School, co-founder of 'Thinking Allowed' and one of the people behind Sci-Fi nights at the Royal College Of Art. So, we discuss all of the above alongside issues such as a potential corona chronology, leadership, the merits of studying politics, philosophy & economics, and the entrepreneurial mind. Finally, Richard outlines a strategic approach based on 'scenario worlds or a preferred future'...

#93: Saving for your kids is not enough

The Fat Wallet Show from Just One Lap

So many Fat Wallet listeners are diligently setting money aside for their kids. We often field questions about investments and suitable investment vehicles for children. Being able to send your child into adult life with enough money is a noble aspiration. We don't often encounter people who benefited from this type of financial leg-up, making it difficult to guess at the impact it has. This week, listener Pieter let us in on his experience as the beneficiary of this sort of parenting. He also tells us why he doesn't think it helped as much as it could have. He writes: The biggest financial issue for my dad has always been paying off their house. He used to say that he would have done much more with us as younger kids if he didn't have that debt. He took it upon himself to make sure my sister and myself get a good, debt-free start to adult life. We are very fortunate that he helped us buy our first house cash, and had some money left to invest. For this I am truly grateful. BUT!   My financial education was as follows: At age 10 my dad gave me a little book and a pen and told me I need to write down my allowance and spending. It took all of 20 seconds and I think I wrote one line in that book. I never saw him do it and he never asked me about it again. More than decade was wasted simply because I was not financially literate. Worst of all, it lead to the mismanagement of the assets with which we were entrusted. If I knew at 18 what I knew at 33, I would have been much closer to retirement. To save oodles of money for your kids is a nice gesture, but teaching them about that money makes the biggest impact. Both my kids have TFSA ETF accounts at Absa and that is all fine and well. But I am making an effort even at their young age to educate them about money. Once they're older they will be included in budget talks and planning, know about salaries and about their investments. I want them to work with money and make mistakes while I am still there to catch them. You also mentioned in the podcast that talking to your kids about finance means you should fix yours. I also feel that you should include them in your failures. Learning comes from failure so go at it :D We live on a farm and pay the kids allowance for chores using poker chips. It's a mission to have a bunch of 1 rands everywhere. We soon realized that we we're running out of poker chips and had to make a plan. I built a small "bank" for them where they can deposit their poker chips. I added some budget functionality and my plan is to add some interest dynamics when they are older. I put it online for some friends to use and figured you can point other parents to if you want. (I gain nothing from people using it. I just like to share).  Moola Bank Shane wins second prize, for putting his money where fees aren't. Thanks for the great on TFSA Transfers! I've decided to be a guinea pig, and initiate my transfer out of those super high fee people (Old Mutual), and into the safety of my EasyEquities account. It's been fairly painless so far, all I did was call each provider, told them what I want to do, and they mailed through the forms. Now the 10 day waiting game begins. Richard Watson reckons the time for silver investing has come and gone. The listener who wanted to put all his cash into silver might want to move half into vanilla! Dirk is looking for a place to invest for his little girls. Seems as if Sygnia has quite a reputable TFSA with lowest costs I have seen in the market thus far. I am thinking about opening a TFSA for each of my little girls in the near future. We'd like to commiserate with our friend Petrus for paying a rental management firm 10% commission every month for no good reason. Been paying these fuckers 10% commission for more than a year for nothing!! Anyway, just another point for NEVER buying!! I have a good tenant (well, I hope as I'm sitting in Germany), so I will be dealing directly with him until I get to sell the piece of shit property. He also has an excellent point regarding emergency funds. Just a quick sanity check. Why should I not use my credit card as an emergency fund? It seems wasteful to have say three months worth of living expenses sitting in cash not earning anything. Surely with the 58 days (I think) interest free you get with your credit card this gives you enough time to draw money from your investment (of course not your TFSA) before you have to pay interest. I guess there is a good reason you keep this in cash, but I am not sure what this is.   Fees If you use your credit card because you lost your job, how will you pay it back?   Perwez wants to help his wife find an index-tracking RA My wife recently resigned from her job and now has her retirement funds available to invest. I've told her the best option would be to open an RA with what she has rather than converting it to a provident or preservation fund. I'm a firm believer in passive funds and I have been doing some research in what is available within RA wrappers. Other than the usual suspects (below), do you know of any other passive RA products/wrappers? Thus far, Im leaning towards a 50/40 split between the Prescient balanced fund and the Nedgroup Core Accelerated funds, both of which are available on Momentum Wealth's RA LISP (the only platform I know of that has both funds available) and adding the remaining 10% to an index tracker focusing on property. Prescient balanced fund Nedgroup Core funds Satrix balanced fund Sygnia Skeleton funds 10X Easy Equities RA funds ETFSA funds ABSA core RA passive fund (although latest factsheet is from Sep 2016) Hannes has literally sold the farm - or part of it, at least. I‘ve sold part of the farm and must now invest the money wisely. Everybody tells you to see a certified financial adviser - I am still to meet such a creature. The inputs I have had creates more confusion than clarity and I get the distinct feeling that a corporate overseer is involved and that fees are not realistic. Can you give me some pointers?    Is there anybody that is knowledgeable about trusts since the property is in a trust? In the podcast we recommend that Hannes get in touch with Craig Gradidge. You can contact him here.  Miles compared a bunch of balanced funds and found that the NewFunds MAPPS Growth ETF outperformed the others by a huge amount. Although it's overweight Naspers, at a TER of 0.20% - great. Even a medium risk TFSA blend would probably battle to beat this growth! I seriously think, for a TFSA portfolio of ETFs, MAPPS could have  about 20% allocation. To remind you, this ETF has: Cash (4.56%) Equity (75.65%) Inflation-Linked Government Bonds (9.11%) Nominal Government Bonds (10.68%) Marlene has a financial responsibility vs lifestyle balance issue. I am saving a lot for retirement and not so much for the things I want to do, which is travel. I feel like my brain is in save mode. All of a sudden I am anxious to save for everything. From a deposit for my next car, to a deposit  for country house (when I retire) or nice-to-have item. How can I balance the two as I grow older, seeing as I am 31? I want to retire comfortably but also travel. I feel like I cannot just focus solely on my retirement portfolio and medical expenses, but want to travel and enjoy life whilst in my 30s. I opened the ETF accounts to utilize when I retire. Hopefully they will grow as I reinvest dividends, and the market doesn't collapse like 2008. Should I resume my investment strategy as is, or should I look at other ways of growing my portfolio? Please also advise if I am saving too much for retirement/ future medical expenses as opposed to doing things I want (travel).

We talk to Author, lecturer and Futurist in Residence at the Tech Foresight Practice at Imperial College, Richard Watson. We talk about the threat to deep thinking in this digital age, even though that's the last bastion for human jobs. We talk about the sex life of ideas and how ideas are formed. The mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be kindled - Plutarch 46-120AD. We talk about the benefits of free play and how children can escape flippant thinking and a reliance on screens. We talk about screenagers as multi-taskers and how that means less "deep" in their work and how they are constantly connected causing unnecessary mental stress. Despite an increase in IQ, basic reading and writing skills have deteriorated hugely. How they are mentally agile but culturally ignorant. In the workplace we talk about “Busyness” and indeed the lack of “tune-out” and sleep due to distractions and overwork.
We also touch on corporate resistance to change and how it may be possible to plant new ideas in old companies and how corporations can attract new thinkers. Finally, we look at solutions for the future. I met Richard at the first Maritime Informatics Conference organised by the Swedish Maritime Competence Centre, Lighthouse in May, 2015, where he was the keynote speaker together with Mikael Lind from Viktoria Swedish ICT. They spoke about "What is Maritime Informatics and why do we need it?" and that is what you will hear in this pod.
