Sam Aaron is the creator of Sonic Pi, one of the most unusual software platforms you'll encounter. It's a live-coding playground for making music. A tool that lets you write code that defines sounds and musical phrases, and build up a hole program that plays anything from a short bleep to a whole nightclub set. And Sam's creator has been using it live for years, weaving drum & bass nights out of thin air, all driven by the Ruby-esque he writes. In this episode we go through Sam's career path and design journey as we look at what it takes to make a programming language with enough expressivity and productivity to produce music at the speed of Sam's imagination.--Sam's Sonic Pi Course: https://www.patreon.com/posts/new-introductory-115404746Sonic Pi: https://sonic-pi.net/SuperCollider: https://supercollider.github.io/Overtone: https://github.com/overtone/overtonePower Gloves: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_GloveWeb Audio API: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Web_Audio_APITau5: https://www.patreon.com/posts/announcing-sonic-112605951Support Developer Voices on Patreon: https://patreon.com/DeveloperVoicesSupport Developer Voices on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@developervoices/joinKris on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/krisajenkins.bsky.socialKris on Mastodon: http://mastodon.social/@krisajenkinsKris on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/krisjenkins/

Discovering Grayslake: Unveiling the Stories and People That Make Our Town Unique
Meet Greg Henkin, long time Grayslake resident with a fun story about music and community. He does so much more than guitars. Listen and learn! https://gregsguitarlessons.com/ What originally started as a desire to play ‘Hot for Teacher' by Van Halen sprouted into a love of all things music. During my 8+ years in music retail, I became captivated by everything guitar & music related. Repairs, recording, vintage gear research & collecting, as well as keeping up with the latest trends in the gear world. Throughout that time, I met some great musicians and began networking with numerous bands in the Chicagoland area. In 2001, I joined Overtone, the oft revered Lake County rock band; which in turn, enabled me to perform at some of Chicago's most prestigious venues as well as notable showcases across the country. I spent 7 years with Overtone and have also played an active role in a variety of other local bands. I began giving guitar lessons during that time, and eventually shifted from a casual afternoon gig to a substitute position at the request of my former teacher, Ben Jinapatha. When he unfortunately passed away, my substitute gig turned full time, and since that day, I have tried my best to make him proud, and pass on the great technique & discipline (and riffs!) he taught me. After Overtone ended, I spent playing in any band that needed me. From folk to hard rock, I was often the hired guitarist to fill a need. Even the local high school brought me in for a rockin' rendition of Carmina Burana. Because of my musical upbringing, I've always tried to venture well beyond the role of simply “guitar teacher.” In addition to teaching a wide variety of styles, I attempt to offer my students unique opportunities to enhance their musical lives. From recording/producing students' bands, to training them in the field of live sound… from acting as manager (with my lovely degree), to helping students book live performances, I am happy to offer my advice both in and out of the practice room. In 2004, I became involved in the nfp group, The Grayslake Youth Center. As a member of the board of directors, I am involved in the majority of decision making; specifically all things music-related. We opened a music-centric teen / community center called The Oasis, which was opened in 2008. I wanted to be able to give my students (and every young musician) a safe, professional environment to play their music. It was one of the most fulfilling times of my life, and I was thrilled to be a part of it. Sadly, keeping a 100% donation-funded non-profit open became an increasingly difficult task as times changed, so our board decided to close up shop in 2019. The majority of my free time is spent between writing/performing/recording/in my studio, jamming with friends, or simply expanding my knowledge in music.

Holy Smokes...it's our 8th Anniversary! Many said it couldn't be done. Others said, "Oh you're still doing that?" Many more said "Why?" Despite them, we don't know the meaning of the word quit! We're still going strong and keep releaseing an episode a week. We decided to go to Lund and visit the Bishop's Arms. Bishop's Arms pubs are all over Sweden. It's a national bar chain. Each location decides what beers to have on tap and in fridges. Some are better than others. The one in Lund is excellent. We start with Overtone Against All Odds. It's a collaboration with Allkin Brewing. This IPA is made with Cita, Citra Cryoc Cryo Pop and Solero hops. It's another solid beer from Overtone. Next we have the return of a favorite. Buxton and Omnipollo have relaunched The Beer. Formally known as Yellow Belly and Coward, The Beer is a peanut butter biscuit stout that contains no peanut butter or biscuits. Like the podcast, it's a classic that keeps you coming back for more. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #imperialstout #stout #ipa #omnipollo #buxtonbrewing #overtone

"Serve the world unselfishly and profit." That's the tagline that Ezra Firestone appends to his work, and he's dead serious about it. As the CEO of Boom! By Cindy Joseph and of Overtone, plus the Founder of Zipify and SmartMarketer, he's one of the most seasoned and trustworthy voices in ecommerce. That is reason enough to have him on my podcast, but I am particularly interested in Ezra's approach to the word "unselfishly." So we spent most of this episode exploring the deeper questions of life and business: what is "profit" really? What's the goal of making a lot of money? How can we generate meaning and joy in life? Ezra is one of the most reflective thinkers I've been around on these topics, and my big hope for this episode is that it will spur similar reflections for you. Special Kargyraa and overtone singing lessons by Giovanni B. Bortoluzzi Giovanni B. Bortoluzzi was born in Italy in 1987. He began his musical journey in 2006, by learning to play drums, bass and guitar with local blues bands. Shortly after, he started being attracted by the sound of the harmonic overtones. Since 2013 he's been studying and researching in the field of overtone singing, with particular dedication to the Tuvan styles and melodies. In 2015 he created the Method4L, a didactical tool designed for improving the control of the overtones in the human voice. In 2017 he moved in Sardinia to learn the tradition of Cantu a Tenore, also known as Sardinian Throat Singing: during these years, he joined a research team that analyzed the movements inside of his larynx, using laryngostroboscopy and real-time MRI. This research focused on the western overtone singing techniques, with a special analysis on the Tuvan style “ezengileer”. It has been presented in Kracow in 2019, and then published in 2020 on TheJournalOfVoice. Nowadays, he's a very popular overtone singing performer, especially for the Tuvan style “Kargyraa”, and also one of the most requested teachers not only in Italy, but also abroad. Creating music on acoustic instruments (ones that don't require electricity to produce the sound) are operating on properties of physics. Sound waves have attributes, and each pitch on an actual instrument is producing multiple sound waves at once, with the fundamental (the sound you actually hear) and overtones, which create resonance. Overtones are inaudible unless you isolate them, which you can do on most instruments. This is a topic that intimidates a lot of musicians, but it's important to try to dive in. It not opens your mind to new instrumental effects, but it helps you understand the secrets to creating RICH harmony, and explains why some chord choices just don't work as well as others. Ezra Firestone (Founder of Boom, Zipify, Smart Marketer, and now the owner of Overtone) talks with our Host (and CEO of Smart Marketer), Molly Pittman, in this encouraging beginning-of-the-year episode. Listen as Ezra throws out some wicked-smart wisdom on life and business, and Molly gets to a core question that she is asked All. The. Time. Together they set the record straight on how to think about Top Of Funnel Return on Ad Spend (ROAS). Ezra and Molly provide a seasoned viewpoint that will help you better think about it, especially if you're drawn to those bigger ROAS numbers. "Would you rather have a 10X ROAS? Where you acquire five customers to sell stuff to later and continue to increase their lifetime value, or would you rather have a 1X or 2X ROAS where you've acquired a hundred customers that you get to monetize further? That's what's missing from the ROAS metric; it does not show scale”. Molly Pittman. YOUR ENGAGEMENT MATTERS Thank you to our listeners for the 5-Star Reviews and meaningful messages! This episode was recorded live at Public Records in Brooklyn, NY as part of the Offair event series. Arcade Fire multi-instrumentalist Richard Reed Parry and percussionist/composer Susie Ibarra talk about their album “Heart and Breath” with cardiologist and bestselling author, Dr. Sandeep Jauhar. Their album is set entirely to the rhythm of their own heartbeats and breath cycles so we dive deep on what's at work with Dr. Jauhar. We cover the relationship between heart and lungs, the development of open heart surgery and more!
John Jay was a giant in the Founding Fathers generation. He was a diplomat, Supreme Court justice, coauthor of the Federalist Papers, and key negotiator at the Treaty of Paris, which ended the American Revolutionary War. His children and grandchildren were also key players in the Early American Republic. They pushed changes in public opinion about slavery, moving the Overtone window on slavery from support to begrudging acceptance to calls for abolition. The changes played out over the generations in the family. Jay's Huguenot grandfather, Augustus Jay, arrived in New York in the 1680s, thought the family's ownership of enslaved people was a marker of their “social ascendancy.” Jay himself owned slaves and was largely silent on the issue while pushing for the ratification of the U.S. Constitution. But his involvement in foreign affairs fostered his abolitionist leanings, leading him to become the first president of a pioneering antislavery society. He enacted a gradual emancipation law as governor of New York in the 1790s. Today's guest is David Gellman, author of Liberty's Chain: Slavery, Abolition, and the Jay Family of New York. He shows how American values were transmitted and transformed from the colonial and revolutionary eras to the Civil War, Reconstruction, and beyond through an extremely important family. In the 1830s and '40s, Jay's son William Jay and grandson John Jay II were radical abolitionists that called for slavery's immediate end. The scorn of their elite peers—and racist mobs—did not deter their commitment to end southern slavery and to combat northern injustice. Across the generations, even as prominent Jays decried human servitude, enslaved people and formerly enslaved people served in Jay households. They lived difficult, often isolated, lives that tested their courage and the Jay family's principles. One such servant fell ill and died after she was jailed for running away from John Jay's household in FranceThe Jays, as well as those who served them, show the challenges of obtaining and holding onto liberty. This family's story helps us to grapple with what we mean by patriotism, conservatism, and radicalism.
