Send us a textOn this weeks episode, we take a listen to a true Texas legend, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and his 1993, Spinning Around the Sun.With his high, lonesome voice, Jimmy Dale embodies the very essence of that land from which he hails, the Texas Panhandle. Even thought he was in his forties when his first solo album was recorded, he had already made his mark on the musical landscape of the Lone Star State, having been in the legendary Flatlanders (along with Joe Ely and Butch Hancock) and the Hub City Movers (the first band to play the Armadillo World Headquarters). By the time he recorded his fourth solo outing, Spinning Around the Sun, Jimmie Dale had found his voice. Hailed as his break out LP, Jimmie Dale sings his heart out on songs he penned and a choice selections of tunes written by other notable songwriters, and features fantastic duet with Lucinda Williams. Spinning Around the Sun is a remarkable album filled with songs of beauty and heartbreak, earning him his first of three Grammy nominations. Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.

Looking back over the past fifty-or-so years, we find a large gathering assembled under a large, all-inclusive tent, called Americana. There's hardly a definition that's been assigned and it's hardly what we'd term ‘a genre'. It is, rather, a mood of the music and a narrative of the storytelling defines it. Like the dozens of genres that line it's walls, we've come to know what we're listening to: blues, gospel, folk and tradition, jazz, and everything in between. This week we'll be stepping into that tent to congregate and celebrate that ‘sound we know' called Americana. The digital bins will take us only so far back, celebrating the music of Bob Dylan, Buddy Miller, Gillian Welch, Joe Ely, Old Crow Medicine Show and a couple dozen others. Just what's needed and built on playlists worthy of the very best of the Americana Hours broadcast each morning here on KOWS Community Radio. If you're a fan…or want to know more about what's under the tent…drop on by this coming Friday morning here on Deeper Roots.

“Doctor Moan” Ever since he landed in San Francisco at 19, the Buffalo-born Peter Case pretty much hasn't stopped making music. He hit the Bay as a busker and from there joined pals Jack Lee and Paul Collins to form the punk band the Nerves. After the Nerves called it a day, Case formed The Plimsouls, who put out a handful of albums that were instant classics. When the Plimsouls broke up, Case stripped things back and put out his first solo album. The self-titled record was a critical favorite, and it kick-started a solo career that has found the singer/songwriter releasing close to 20 albums, including The Man With The Blue Post Modern Fragmented Neo Traditionalist Guitar, Sings Like Hell and his new one Doctor Moan. The Grammy-nominated Case is a true troubadour whose life has been devoted to song. He's put out several books, including As Far As You Can Get Without A Passport, had his songs covered by everyone from Blondie to Joe Ely to John Prine, opened for the Ramones and John Lee Hooker, collaborated with Los Lobos, Roger McGuinn of The Byrds and Ry Cooder and you know what? The list goes on and on. This is just a fragment of what Peter Case has done—his CV has a lot of pages. His new album Doctor Moan is a stirring song cycle that's powered by Case behind the keys of an acoustic piano. And it's riveting work--The songs are heartfelt, arresting and filled with raw finesse that makes every moment immediate and engaging. www.petercase.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.embersarts.com www.alexgreenonline.com www.bombshellradio.com Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Guitarist and songwriter David Grissom is on the show this week! Anyone who knows anything about the guitar knows Grissom is a monster player, and has been a key element of albums for Joe Ely and John Mellencamp, and then with the band Storyville. But what I wasn't really aware of was his extensive list of session work he did here in Nashville during the early 2000's. For a good 10 years or so, Nashville session work was kind of his main thing. He played on huge records for artists like Trisha Yearwood, Martina McBride, Lee ann Womack, Montgomery Gentry, Billy Ray Cyrus and Brooks and Dunn. But he also maintained his work on the rootsier side of things, writing for, touring with or playing on records for Buddy Guy, John Mayall, Eliza Gilkyson, Chris Isaak, Rita Coolidge and lots more. So all this to say we had alot to talk about. I wanted to dig into that session scene in the early 2000's and see what was going on at that point. We had a great talk about all the aspects of his career, making some of the classic records he was involved in, how he got into music in the first placxe and his current band and regular gigs around Austin, TX. We also get a little nerdy and talk about his signature Paul Reed Smith guitars closer to the end.You can get all the info on David, his recordings, live albums, and weekly gig at: www.davidgrissom.comListen to the accompanying playlist for this episode here, which features the artist's own music, plus many of the songs that were discussed during the show. Please leave a review on Apple Podcasts - it really helps get the show heard by more folks! “Memories To Burn” The Williams Brothers come from a rich musical lineage that goes all the way back to the late ‘30s, when Williams Brothers Andy, Dick, Bob and Don started their singing quartet that took them all the way from their home state of Iowa to sunny Los Angeles, where they appeared in movies and were under contract with MGM Films. The second iteration of The Williams Brothers featured Don's sons Andrew and David, who put out two albums in 1973. As teen idols they had a hit with “What's Your Name" and even made an appearance on The Partridge Family. They resurfaced again in the late ‘80s, putting out a trio of fabulous albums for Warner Brothers, their last being 1993's Harmony Hotel. Along the way they backed up Brian Setzer, Joe Ely and The Cruzados, sang back up on the Plimsouls' "A Million Miles Away" and were part of T-Bone Burnett's band for a tour of Europe. They had a hit with "Can't Cry Enough" in '92, appeared as an Everly Brothers duo in Alison Anders' Grace Of My Heart and after that…..well, after that, they stepped away and lived their lives. 28 years later we have Memories To Burn. This album gets done in 30 minutes what most bands try to do their entire careers. The harmonies are lustrous and elegant and the phrasing is delivered with finesse and grace. The two brothers' vocal interplay is effortless, organic and soul-affirming. Featuring covers by Robbie Fulks and Iris DeMent and with a band that features the marvelous Marvin Etzioni and Greg Liesz, Memories To Burn is one of 2022's very best. Good to have these guys back. Mike Graham's earliest songs were noticeably shaped by the energy buried in the flatlands and oilfields of West Texas. Born in Pecos, raised in and around Dumas, Big Spring, Midland and Odessa, Texas, it's not surprising that his debut album (1999) was titled "Just West of Nowhere". Although his musical influences include Rodney Crowell, James McMurtry, Springsteen, Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt - Guy Clark, Delbert McClinton, Joe Ely, and Butch Hancock (all from West Texas) are on the list as well. Mike's second album titled "Find You a Highway" (2001) was produced by Larry Joe Taylor and includes several more West Texas influenced songs. His third release, "Bad Ideas" (2003), was produced by legendary guitarist, songwriter, and member of the Lost Gonzo Band John Inmon. The whiskey-soaked heartland rock record was well-received and got significant airplay on Texas radio as well as on Sirius/XM's Outlaw Country station. After touring just about every club, honky-tonk, and festival in Texas and beyond for almost a decade, Mike retired from the music business in 2006 to focus on his new family and generally becoming a grown-up.In 2020, with more time on his hands and a batch of unrecorded songs, Mike called on his former bandmates Bracken Hale, Corby Schaub, and Derek Groves, plus Heather Stalling, Geoff Queen, Courtney Patton, and Chris Schlotzhauer. The result is a seven song EP "Sunset/Sunrise". It was released in November of 2020. The self-explanatory  first track is titled "Good to be Back".  Whether alone or alongside some of the best songwriters working today, Mike is very glad to be back writing and performing his songs. https://open.spotify.com/artist/0Z4q1rOm7YTXnOd0XuHvQB?si=RoOavAp-R0-wnbQt0mGPSA https://music.apple.com/us/artist/mike-graham/962755309

Blending rockabilly and R&B, Dave became the band's primary songwriter, penning classics such as “Marie, Marie,” “American Music,” “Border Radio,” “Jubilee Train,” “Little Honey,” “Dark Night,” and “Long White Cadillac,” which later became a Top 40 country hit for Dwight Yoakam. After a brief stint as a member of the band X, Dave launched a solo career and continued to craft critically-acclaimed songs that defy genre, including “Fourth of July,” “Haley's Comet,” “Dry River,” “King of California,” “Abilene,” “Ashgrove,” “Harlan County Line,” “Johnny Ace is Dead,” and “Downey to Lubbock,” a collaboration with Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Dave's songs have been covered by Los Lobos, Little Milton, Buckwheat Zydeko, Shakin' Stevens, Joe Ely, Robert Earl Keen, James McMurtry, and others. Additionally, his music has been featured on a number of TV soundtracks, including Justified and The Sopranos.

Joe Ely, Adam Carroll, and Willis Alan Ramsey. What do these three have in common? They're all born and raised in Texas and they have each released fantastic albums that are uniquely Texan. Joe Ely's 1978 album "Honky Tonk Masquerade" is a mixture of old school country, with a touch of zydeco and norteno mixed in, and a collection of songs written by Ely and his Lubbock bandmates, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock. Adam Carroll's first album, South of Town, is a debut album by an excellent songwriter who seems wiser than his then 23 years old. He is like an updated version of Bob Dylan from the Freewheelin' days. And Willis Alan Ramsey's so far only release is a classic, a touchstone for many Texas artists to come, with songs that are almost impossible to categorize. We hope you enjoy this little window into the world of these great Texas songwriters and performers.

Nashville-based husband-and-wife duo Mike T. Lewis and MaryBeth Zamer, known on stage as The Twangtown Paramours, have made a name for themselves defying boundaries with their award-winning catalogue of Americana, folk, and blues anthems. With a slew of accolades for their first two acoustic full-length albums, they've earned a loyal following, balancing serious instrumental and vocal chops with witty stage banter and a lighthearted approach to life. They don't take themselves, or the world, too seriously. Now poised to release their third full-length album, Double Down on a Bad Thing, The Twangtown Paramours are shifting gears to showcase a full band, electric, groove-oriented, upbeat, soul-infused, and retro blues sound. “We want people to have fun, to cheer up, to dance, and to start sporting a positive attitude, dammit,” says Mike. Hit songwriter, session musician, and producer Mike Lewis was born in NYC, but his sound is informed by a mix of experiences across the country's major music centers, including NYC, L.A., Austin, and Nashville. He began learning classical and jazz guitar at age eight, studying under Leonid Bolotine, William Matthews, and Barry Galbraith, before earning degrees at Columbia in New York City and the Grove School of Music in Los Angeles. He wrote a #1 platinum pop hit ranked the 2nd biggest-selling female ballad of all time in Korea, and occasionally plays upright bass for Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Born in Washington D.C., lead singer MaryBeth Zamer was raised on a mix of opera and American songbook music, singing along to Dean Martin and Ella Fitzgerald, before discovering Little Feat, Bonnie Raitt, and the blues in high school. A fixture in the Washington, D.C. club scene for years, MaryBeth performed with popular local cover band, Ignition and sang backup vocals for Eva Cassidy's band, Method Actor. “Eva was a huge influence on my singing style,” MaryBeth says. “She taught me to go beyond having fun and hitting the right notes, to sing in a way that conveys real emotion.” MaryBeth and Mike met and started dating in 2009, while both were working on separate musical projects. “The relationship came first,” says MaryBeth, “but I kept hearing songs he'd written that I loved, and I wanted to add my own vocal spin to them. I felt like I could interpret and deliver Mike's songs the way he intended them to be.” The Twangtown Paramours released their debut self-titled album via Inside Edge Records just a year later in 2010, a well-received, pop-infused folk album that rose to #11 on the Folk charts. In 2012, they released their second full-length project, The Promise of Friday Night, a narrative-driven, acoustic folk album that hit #2 on the Folk charts, #150 on the Americana charts, and #7 on Deep Roots Magazine's top 50 albums of 2012. In the following years, the pair became three-time finalists at the Kerrville New Folk Competition in Kerrville, TX and winners of the Wildflower Contest in Richardson, TX. They also had the honor to open for major acts such as Joe Ely, Claire Lynch, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. It was 2013 when I first became fully immersed in the Texas Music scene while recording an early Mister Radio episode at the Picker Circle in Luckenbach, Texas, then I finally understood why many critics say that all the best singer songwriters come from Texas, in fact one reviewer for Americana magazine, when writing about my guest, stated that “some may argue against this fact but it's true; the dissenters are wrong. Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett, Butch Hancock, Joe Ely, Nanci Griffith, Willie Nelson, the names go on, and now there's one more to add to the list...Kevin Higgins.” It is my honor to introduce today's guest, Kevin Higgins.

His credits include several singles for Garth Brooks, as well as singles by Gary Morris, Diamond Rio, Patty Loveless and Chris Young. Blazy has a total of seven number one hits to his credit. Kent Blazy was raised in Lexington, Kentucky. At an early age, he played rhythm guitar and sang in various local bands, citing The Byrds, Rodney Crowell and Joe Ely as influences. He later played for Canadian singer Ian Tyson. Later on, Blazy met former Exile member Mark Gray, who suggested that Blazy move to Nashville, Tennessee. Eventually, he signed to a publishing contract, but the publishing company closed; despite the loss of contract, Gary Morris sent Blazy's "Headed for a Heartache" into the top 5 on the country charts. By the late 1980s, Blazy met with a then-unknown Garth Brooks, who gave him the idea for a song entitled "If Tomorrow Never Comes." He and Brooks co-wrote the song, which went on to become Brooks' first number one hit. Brooks continued to record Blazy's material throughout the 1990s, including the singles "Ain't Goin' Down ('Til the Sun Comes Up)," "It's Midnight Cinderella," "She's Gonna Make It," "Somewhere Other Than the Night" and the George Jones duet "Beer Run (B Double E Double Are You In?)." He also co-wrote "That's What I Get for Lovin' You" by Diamond Rio and "Can't Get Enough" by Patty Loveless in the late 1990s. Blazy, along with songwriters Pat Alger, Tony Arata and Kim Williams, recorded an album entitled A Songwriters' Tribute to Garth Brooks, which included their renditions of songs that they had written for Brooks. This album was released in 2001 via VFR Records. Other songs that Blazy has co-written include "You Can Let Go" by Crystal Shawanda and "Gettin' You Home (The Black Dress Song)" by Chris Young from 2008 and 2009 respectively, as well as American Idol season 8 finalist Danny Gokey's debut single "My Best Days Are Ahead of Me."Intro music artist credit: Short Guitar Clip by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Artist: http://audionautix.com/

RELATED: Thousands tune in to DJ Mel’s virtual dance party Sunday: Jeff Plankenhorn. Not since Junior Brown’s 1990s breakthrough with his “guit-steel” has an Austin-based artist become so specifically associated with a custom-made instrument as Plankenhorn’s trusty “plank,” a Dobro-like contraption. His versatility as a musician has long made him in high demand with acts including Joe Ely and the Resentments, the latter outfit having welcomed him into their fold many years ago for Sunday night shows at the Saxon Pub. With those shows on hold for now amid the coronavirus pandemic, Plankenhorn has staked out some time this Sunday for a virtual show of his own. 8 p.m. facebook.com/events/194330805185995.   What is it about Texas and it's reputation for gunslingin' killer guitar players? You know the old cliche' "something in the water?", well, this certainly applies to the Lone Star State...think of the guitarists that have emerged from here- Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughn, Eric Johnson, Billy Gibbons, David Holt, Charlie Sexton, and newer cats like Carter Arrington- etc..but way up at the top of that list is my guest today- Mr. David Grissom. A veteran of the John Mellencamp band, Joe Ely, Storyville and the Dixie Chicks, he's also appeared on many records as a session player and songwriter. I've known David for a long time as you'll hear- we toured together for a few months in the late 90's with BB King when I was in the Neville Brothers and he was in Storyville. In this interview we talk early days in Austin, string bending, influences, gear, Mellencamp, Lloyd Maines and steel guitar as an influence, Norman Blake, Ringo Starr, solo records etc...and much more. Couple of great little jams in here too! On a nice day in Austin I got in an Uber from the hotel and headed over to David's studio where we did this interview. Hope you enjoy!   Recorded Austin, TX Sept 2017Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-riff-raff-with-shane-theriot/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
