In August of 1992, the US Marshals Services were called to a property in the remote Boundary County of Idaho, called Ruby Ridge, to arrest Randy Weaver who had failed to make his court appearance for gun charges. The exchange between the Weavers and the US Marshals soon turned violent and the FBI Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) was called in to help. Over 11 days, 3 people would end up losing their lives and the events that took place during the standoff would be hotly debated for many years to come. On March 25th, 1971, President Yahya Khan launches Operation Searchlight in East Pakistan, a brutal military crackdown intended to snuff out Bengali separatism and restore West Pakistani authority. Meanwhile, an American diplomat in Dacca named Archer Blood begins reporting and documenting the slaughter, hoping to convince his government to step in and restrain Yahya. In Washington, D.C., President Richard Nixon and his national security advisor Henry Kissinger weigh the political costs of intervening in the atrocities, while secretly planning a groundbreaking outreach to Communist China. Tearsheet's roots were in investment and wealth tech. As that world became more focused on plain vanilla robo-advisors about a decade ago, I expanded our focus to include banking, payments, and lending. That's because with ETFs and low-cost providers, it felt like most of the focus of innovation was coming from removing costs. Things have changed since then. On today's episode, we explore the changing world of wealth management with two industry leaders: Nader Souri, Head of Corporate Banking at BNY, and Caesar Sengupta, CEO of Arta Finance. You don't have to listen closely to really feel their connection and the relationship they've personally forged through working together. I first spoke with Ceasar a few years ago when he was VP and General Manager of Payments and Next Billion Users at Google. Our conversation reveals how these two organizations are leading how wealth management solutions are evolving for professionals. It also sheds light on the role of fintech partnerships in this transformation. Caesar Sengupta opens the discussion by explaining Arta Finance's mission. “We are a digital family office or a digital private bank for professionals, not the ultra-rich,” he says. The goal is to democratize wealth management and make sophisticated financial tools accessible to those who have worked hard in their careers. Nader Souri adds, “At BNY, we provide the platform upon which folks like Arta Finance can build their businesses.” He highlights the role of clearing and custody infrastructure. This helps in supporting innovative fintech solutions.
In the wake of the deadly Bhola Cyclone, 50 million Pakistanis go to the polls on December 7th, 1970 and cast their votes in a national election, which yields unexpected and destabilizing results. As the emergent factions fight for control of Pakistan's nascent democracy, the political process slowly disintegrates and the gulf between East and West Pakistan becomes irreconcilable. Collectively, the global student protests demanding university divestments from Israel are one of the largest mass protests in recent history. Student protesters are risking their futures as they demand their institutions financially divest from Israel and companies connected to supplying weapons and technology to Israel's government.Last week, in Calgary, police descended on the University of Calgary campus with riot gear, using shields, batons and rubber bullets, to forcibly remove a group of protesters from an encampment set up on campus. On today's podcast, Vinita speaks with Pratim Sengupta, professor of learning sciences at the University of Calgary. Sengupta was there the night police engulfed the protesters and says the violence he saw shook him to his core. "So in our view, great would be when everyone can find the best place to put their money to work. To whatever cause they want. It could be investing. It could be protecting their family. It could be long-term. It could be a nonprofit. It could be helping a local business. Today in the world, there is Google to find information, right? There's Amazon to find products. But what about financial opportunities? There is no one place to find financial opportunities. We wanna be able to create that for the world where anyone who's looking to put their money to work has a place to put their money to work. And anybody who's looking for help in building whatever business or, growing whatever they want to grow, can meet, these people who are looking to put their money to work." - Caesar Sengupta Fresh out of the studio, Caesar Sengupta, the CEO and co-founder of Arta Finance, shares the story of how the startup democratizes family office wealth management to accredited professionals in the digital era. We explore the present state of digital payments, their impact and potential, and tech-enabled investment platforms with Caeser Sengupta, CEO and co-founder of Arta Finance. Previously, Caeser spent a number of years at Google as VP & GM of Payments & the Next Billion Users initiative. In this podcast, we begin by discussing the economic and social welfare benefits derived from the digital payments revolution of the past decade. Caeser walks us through the fundamental changes in the way business and commerce are conducted in Brazil, China, India, and elsewhere, thanks to the development in mobile payments and near-instantaneous settlements. We talk about the broader ecosystem, including the potential of super apps, safety/security, role of regulators, central bank digital money, and of course, crypto/blockchain. We then shift to Caeser's ongoing foray into creating a platform for wealth management, with enhanced customer experience and capabilities. The intersection of digital literacy and financial literacy has still plenty of room for disruption and value creation.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In what is meant to be his quiet and reflective corridor of retirement, my guest today, Abhijit Sengupta grapples with a disquiet that lingers. A former senior IAS officer and therefore, you might say, a custodian of order and democracy, a lifetime of service to the nation has clearly left him with a profound sense of duty that refuses to retire with him.Abhijit's expression of angst—a visceral response to the erosion of the democratic foundations that he cherished—has resulted in his latest book, The Queen of All Nations. A response to what he sees as the foundations of democracy that are being visibly eroded with every headline and each policy shift, serving up yet another dissonant note in a score he thought he knew by heart. It is understandably difficult for anyone to come to grips with the realisation that the ideals he held dear are slipping through the cracks of a society in a time of ideological polarisation. So, amidst all this angst, Abhijit Sengupta becomes a reluctant activist in this shifting landscape of incipient fascism and rising fundamentalism. But he channels his efforts not as a lament for a bygone era but as something of a rallying cry for the return of ideals. With the optimism that the spirit of a plural, democratic society can endure if those who believe in it refuse to be silent witnesses to its demise. The Queen of All Nations is more than a historical narrative. It's a call for greater awareness of history and what got us here. It is a poignant reflection on the anguish of this intellectual in a world grappling with political turmoil. And, as a comfortable read, the book serves as a lighthouse for readers of the younger generation whom he takes on a sweeping journey through the annals of modern India, delving into the intricate political landscape, social upheavals, and cultural transformations that have shaped the nation's identity. To discuss his book, his ethic and his state of mind, he joins from his home in Bangalore, a city we share.Buy The Queen Of All Nations: https://amzn.to/3sDCh09 Buy A to Z: https://amzn.to/49QmM5F Read Ramjee Chandran's review of A to Z: https://bit.ly/3T0JWQSABOUT ABHIJIT SENGUPTAAbhijit Sengupta joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1972 and retired in 2008 as Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Government of India. This episode of Red Inker is about how cricket history has been covered, and for that we get on one of the great modern historians of our game, Arunabha Sengupta. We talk about India's win over England, history in multiple languages, what stories should be told, how old cricket writing stretches the truth and why the scoreboard was an ass. - To support the podcast please go to our Patreon page. https://www.patreon.com/user?u=32090121. We are the descendants of Indian indentured laborers, brought to the Caribbean after the abolition of slavery. Our roots run deep, interwoven with Indian, African, European, and Caribbean influences, and forged through centuries of migration, colonialism, survival, and resilience. Yet, our story remains largely untold. As Brenda Beck puts it in a 1992 South Asian Diaspora article, media narratives of our people are often based on derogatory stereotypes that fail to capture the richness and complexity of our heritage. So, what does it truly mean to be Indo-Caribbean? For us, it means embracing a history of displacement and triumph, speaking English while cherishing our connection to the Indian language and dialects. It means losing ourselves in Bollywood movies, from the beloved "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" to the soul-stirring "Dil To Pagal Hai" and "Kal Ho Naa Ho." It means dancing to Hindi film songs at birthdays, weddings, and basement jams, despite not knowing the meaning behind all the lyrics. It means cultivating a love for cricket, music, and dance, drawing from our Caribbean surroundings while honoring the cultural traditions of our ancestors. Our food, a fusion of Indian and Caribbean flavors, showcases the intricate blend of spices and ingredients, enriched with local delights like plantain, cassava and, of course, Guyana Shrimp. Join us for Episode 7 of the Pepper Pot Podcast as we explore the challenges we encountered in forming our identities as descendents of Indian Indentured Workers. Together, we reclaim our narrative, honour the generations before us, and inspire those to come. Follow and connect with The Peppa Pot Podcast online, we'd love to hear from you! Join us on the latest episode of the Peppa Pot as we explore the history of Indentured Indian Women and the challenges they faced once they arrived in the Caribbean. Throughout the period of Indian Indentureship, the number of men recruited to work throughout the Caribbean greatly outnumbered the number of women, resulting in women being in high demand but receiving no preferential treatment and often falling victim to abuse. Despite this, for some women, arriving in the Colonies represented freedom and an opportunity to overcome generations of oppression that they experienced back home. Learn more about the history and adversity of Indentured Indian Women and how they took care of themselves by tuning in to Episode 5 of the Peppa Pot: Leggo me nah Raja. The Importer Self Assessment (ISA) is a tool that allows importers to self-check their Internal Compliance procedures and processes. This provides a line of communication between the importer and CBP. This mutually benefits both parties, such as importers being removed from the audit pool for Focused Assessments. Deep SenGupta of DSG Global LLC. provides us with information on the renamed program, now CTPAT Trade Compliance. He explains why this voluntary program can be beneficial for importers in working with CBP.
