In this special 4 part series, we’ll be highlighting The Coalition to Advance Public Safety (CAPS), a coalition of organizations working to intercept and prevent violence in communities across the U.S. The coalition’s work builds on years of knowledge of public health, gun violence prevention and the particular needs of different locales, as well as the lived experience of community members on the ground. With these tools, CAPS creates and maintains community violence intervention (CVI) ecosystems around the country. The Department of Health and Human Service's Office of Climate Change and Health Equity (OCCHE) and George Mason University Center for Climate Change Communication (Mason 4C) are each doing their part to understand and address climate change and health at their crossroads. We speak with OCCHE Director Dr. John Balbus and Mason 4C Director Dr. Ed Maibach to understand how they're rallying government agencies and the health sector to mobilize on climate action and help us keep our health resilient to a changing climate. Dr. John Balbus is the director of OCCHE. He is a physician and public health professional with over 25 years of experience working on the health implications of climate change. He has served as HHS principal to the US Global Change Research Program and co-chair of the working group on Climate Change and Human Health for the US Global Change Research program. The focus is on one of his recently published studies that analyzed the link between communities' "Nature Score" and anxiety, stress and depression. He explains what a "Nature Score" is, how they did the study and the results. He describes other research showing that exposure to nature is beneficial for PTSD and ADHD and explains theories for why nature is linked to mental health benefits and lack of nature may be detrimental. Finally, he discusses ongoing research in this area and implications for public health practices. This is a 4 part participatory documentary series centering on the path of Black female physicians in the United States. Thea is a participant in the documentary. She is a nationally and internationally renowned emergency medicine physician at Boston Medical Center. Khama Ennis MD MPH is is the Creative Visionary and Founder of Faces of Medicine. She is also a practicing physician, speaker, writer, health equity advocate and experienced healthcare leader. Dr. Ennis opened a private practice, Intentional Health, in 2023 focused on Integrative Health and Lifestyle Medicine for patients throughout Massachusetts. She previously served as President of the Medical Staff at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. Prior to that she was Chief of Emergency Medicine and Medical Director for the Emergency Department. Her essays have been featured in the Washington Post and Parents Magazine. A talk she gave on antiracism in medicine is one of three selected by the Board of Registration in Medicine to educate physicians in the state of Massachusetts on implicit bias. Thea James MD is Vice President of Mission, Associate Chief Medical Officer, Executive Director of the Health Equity Accelerator Boston Medical Center, and Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Director of the Violence Intervention Advocacy Program at BMC. She is a founding member of the Health Alliance for Violence Intervention (the HAVI). In 2011 she was appointed to Attorney General Eric Holder's National Task Force on Children Exposed to Violence. As Vice President of Mission Dr. James works with caregivers throughout BMC. Additionally she has primary responsibility for coordinating and maximizing BMC's relationships and strategic alliances with a wide range of local, state and national organizations including community agencies, housing advocates, foundations, and multisector industries that partner with BMC to meet the full spectrum of patients' needs. The goal is to foster innovative, upstream, and effective new models of care that are rooted in racial equity and economic mobility. This approach is essential for patients and communities to thrive.

Grant funding went toward a care coordination effort to support individuals experiencing homelessness with coordination by hospitals, health and behavioral health providers, community organizations and government agencies. Following a breast cancer diagnosis in 1992, Barbara Sarah left a 20 year career as a school social worker and chose to dedicate herself to work in Oncology. She was the director of the Oncology Support Program at Health Alliance in Kingston, NY for two decades. She then co-founded the non profit organization, Circle of Friends for the Dying and the Circle Home for the Dying, the first of its kind in the Mid-Hudson Valley. Thousand are marching through New York city right now, demanding President Biden and other world leaders stop new oil and gas drilling. Thousands of people have filled the streets of Midtown Manhattan to demand world leaders quickly pivot away from the fossil fuels that are dangerously heating up the planet. It follows other demonstrations around the world, including protests in England, India, South Korea and Germany. The protest has attracted support from around 700 organisations, actors, activists, and climate activists.
