In this episode Brian does the unthinkable and finally picks the Original 1977 "Suspiria". This Italian horror classic has been on the list for an episode since the FM3 started this podcast many many moons and meatballs ago.  After last week's episode "Inferno" which is the second of the 3 Mother's Trilogy by Argento, Brian needed to go back and start at the top with what is his personal favorite Italian horror film. There are so many reasons why this one floats to the tippy top of the heap of mediocre Italian horror and if you have not seen it yet, you are truly missing out. Argento is a master and nobody's movies look like early Argento horror.  Brian, Jef and Josh were really happy to just watch a few decent movies after a long list of duds. The FM3 are off again to beautiful Italy at the request of one of their amazing Top Dog Patreons! This time around Jef, Josh and Brian are checking out Argento's "Inferno" from 1980! The guys were excited to finally watch the master of Italian Horror's less talked about installment in his 3 Mother's Witch Trilogy. As huge fans of Argento's film "Suspiria" the crew could only imagine the vivid colors, crazy deaths and a few confusing moments and they were not let down. This beautiful flick is one you should all check if you have not yet. Fire up the cauldron and get that sketti cooking because the witches are in roast mode and no one is safe!

In this episode Jef "jumps the shark" and picks a decent movie for a change of spooky scenery. He picked 1990's "The Exorcist 3" aka "Legion" written and directed by the one and only William Peter Blatty. This film is rare in that the 3rd installment of the franchise is actually good! The true hero of this movie's thumbs up status is one of the best damn actors ever to grace a screen, Mr. Brad Dourif! And while this flick is filled with great shots, cool scares and a killer sound design,  Mr. Blatty also did an amazing job directing even if the picture released was not entirely how he wanted it. Ten Baltic and Scandinavian (and the UK) have agreed to come together to form a multi-national maritime force for crisis response around Northern Europe, specifically on the maritime border with Russia. All parties are NATO members, and members of the Joint Expeditionary Force – itself a NATO framework organisation. Ed Arnold from the D Group explains why this is about operationalising the JEF when the politics of it is wandering. But the credibility of the UK is being pressed hard when command commitments are growing, diverse, geographically spread, and rely on too few qualified and experienced people. Why should the UK command? Why should others follow? Why is Northwood the right place? And, how will the UK balance the long-standing habit of using US C2 systems with an announcement that declares an intent to command on whatever system European Allies favour? Ed Arnold answers all these questions and queries. Underlying the discussion sits some uncomfortable concerns about UK command credibility, the need for continued momentum if the Northern Navies Initiative is to survive, and the desperate need for some form of political prioritisation of tasks from London.

Buitengewoon symbolisch hierbij was de uitnodiging aan premier Mark Carney om als eregast de Top bij te wonen van de Europese Politieke Gemeenschap in Jerevan, Armenië. Jaap Jansen en PG Kroeger duiken in de zwaartepunten, de focus en de opmerkelijke inspiratiebronnen. Deze aanpak is het model geworden voor alomvattende akkoorden die de EU wereldwijd sluit, zoals met India, Japan, Australië, Vietnam en Mercosur. Met Canada gaat deze coalitievorming in hoog tempo de diepte in. Bij de ruimtevaart in de ESA, Horizon Europe rond R&D, als enig niet-Europese land in het lange-termijn defensie-investeringen programma SAFE, met Oekraïne en in de JEF-coalitie rond de Pool en Oostzee. En nu als eerste niet-Europees land actief in de door Emmanuel Macron geïnitieerde Europese Politieke Gemeenschap die samenkwam in de Kaukasus, dichtbij een aantal spanningshaarden in de actuele geopolitiek. Mark Carney benut dit nadrukkelijk om met de EU samen afstand te nemen van allereerst Amerika, maar ook van China. Daarmee vult hij zijn geruchtmakende speech in Davos, eerder dit jaar, heel concreet in. Hij riep de ‘middelmachten’ op zich te emanciperen van 'hegemonen' als Poetin, Xi en Trump en realistisch te bezien wat zij met elkaar kunnen waarmaken. Alleen zo kunnen ze hun soevereiniteit bewaren. À la het kabinet-Jetten: “Aan tafel, niet op het menu.” Canada moest als een van de eersten meemaken wat zo'n 'middle power' existentieel kon bedreigen, schetste Carney scherp. Betreuren dat Trump, Poetin en Xi zich zo gedragen noemde hij zinloos. “Nostalgie is geen strategie.” Macron, Friedrich Merz, Mario Draghi en Alexander Stubb bouwen hier nadrukkelijk op voort. In de campagne in ons land klonk de echo ervan door in 'Het kan anders' en 'Het kan wél'. In Canada is inmiddels forse steun voor - zelfs – het lidmaatschap van de EU. Stubb noemt dit idee ‘a marriage made in heaven’. De Europese Commissie houdt het formeel braaf af, maar wijst op mechanismen als 'speciale partnerschapsovereenkomsten' met verwante landen. Ook voor Oekraïne en Moldavië wordt dit verkend en voor Noorwegen is het al een feit. Canada zou als hoogontwikkeld rijk land van 41 miljoen inwoners, met een bbp van 10% van de EU, ongeveer zo groot zijn als Italië en iets groter dan de Benelux of Spanje. Carney wil daarbij met zijn land de brug slaan tussen de EU en het Trans-Pacific Partnership waarin Canada een belangrijke rol speelt. Een hoogontwikkeld, vrijheidsgezind 'handelsblok' van 1,5 miljard mensen zou daarmee tegenover de 'hegemonen' geplaatst worden. En zou zoiets bij Canada zelf passen, gelet op de wortels van dit land? Wie daarin duikt ziet verrassende overeenkomsten. Hun Rudolf Thorbecke was diens tijdgenoot Lord Durham. Van een reeks losse, soevereine provincies werd na 1870 een coherente confederatie opgebouwd, die qua opbouw sterk doet denken aan de EU van nu. Warm bepleiter daarvan was nota bene queen Victoria. Drijfveer was toen al de schrik voor 'tariffs' en de expansiedrift uit Washington. Bewust koos men voor een Europese traditie met multiculturele vrijheden, een constitutionele monarchie en nadruk op betrouwbare, lange termijn relaties als land dat in essentiële, nu ook vaak zeer kritische grondstoffen op zekerheid van afnemers wilde kunnen rekenen. Worth a watch? Sure, but don't go into this one thinking you will figure the story out, this film came out almost 50 years ago and Jef, Josh and Brian are certain there is no figuring out this story. Premier en bondskanselier werden met nadruk als gelijkwaardige buren gepresenteerd. Hun persconferentie onderstreepte dit eens te meer. Geen vriendelijke plichtplegingen, maar een intense verkenning langs alle grote geopolitieke en Europese thema's. Het contrast met de Schoof-fase kon niet groter. Volgende halte is Jettens bezoek aan de JEF-top in Helsinki. De Joint Expeditionary Force is het samenwerkingsverband van de landen die aan de Pool en de grenzen van Rusland hun defensie optimaal afstemmen voor maximale afschrikking. De top op 26 maart wordt voorafgegaan door een bilaterale dag met de Finse president Alexander Stubb. Dat de premier meteen met deze geopolitieke senior aan tafel gaat zitten is geen toeval. Nederland en Finland hebben samen met de Britten een financieringsinitiatief in gang gezet dat in NAVO en EU grote impact moet krijgen. In Helsinki ontmoet Jetten ook premier Keir Starmer en een hele reeks Baltische en Scandinavische premiers en via het scherm Volodymyr Zelensky en de Canadese premier Mark Carney. De zich met alles bemoeiende VVD-vicepremier Dilan Yesilgöz zal het lastig vinden dat ze zo'n topconferentie rond defensie en de financiering ervan aan de D66-premier moet overlaten. Dat Finse samenwerkingsplan werd in Parijs aangekondigd door een minister die het stevige Europese profiel van het nieuwe kabinet opvallend snel verinnerlijkt heeft. Eelco Heinen, die zich post-Schoof ontwikkelt tot een een echte eurofiel, deed daarbij zijn best om weg te redeneren waarom hij hiermee toch echt geen nieuwe loot aan de boom van de eurobonds lanceerde. Heinens speech bij Euronext was een soort beginselverklaring van Jettens pro-Europese koers, waarmee Nederland aan de tafel wil zitten en niet langer passief op het menu wil staan. Met vuur verkondigde Heinen de afronding en vervolmaking van de Europese kapitaalmarktunie, geheel volgens de rapporten van Letta en Draghi. De gevolgen van die aanpak kunnen voor de EU van enorme betekenis zijn. Het mobiliseren van kapitaal voor R&D, innovatie en grote transities en ook voor de wederopbouw van Oekraïne staan hier voorop. Maar ook een ontkoppeling van de Verenigde Staten en koppeling aan de enorme kapitaalmarkten van wereldspelers als Japan, India, Zuid-Korea en Mercosur. "Honderden miljarden minder kosten voor de EU", rekende eurocommissaris Wopke Hoekstra voor in het AD. Hier werd meteen zichtbaar wat Tom Berendsen in Berlijn al agendeerde. Nederland wil 'kopgroepen' in de EU. Op zijn eerste Eurotop op 19 maart regelde Jetten dit meteen al voor de beleidsportefeuille van Bart van den Brink. Nederland zet een 'migratiebeleid-kopgroep' in gang waar zijn collega’s Mette Frederiksen (Denemarken, S&D) en Giorgia Meloni (Italië, ECR) samen met hem optrekken. Hoogtepunt van de herpositioneringscampagne van Jettens buitenlandteam wordt het koninklijk bezoek aan Pennsylvania, Florida en Washington DC. In this episode the FM3 tackle one of the most infamous horror films ever, Jörg Buttgereit's NEKROMANTIK! The lore behind this 1987 gorefest is the stuff of legend. Trying to track down an actual copy back in the 90's was a fruitless quest for so many curious gross-out nerds. Banned in many countries even to this day, you could say that watching NEKROMANTIK is much like getting a receiving a medal for bravery. It is not for the faint of heart and has many trigger warnings such as real animal murder, fake animal murder,  suicide, and as you can imagine everything you might do to a corpse if you were a ghoul. So folks that have not feasted their eyes on this gag inducing film may want to go in cautiously and Jef, Josh and Brian suggest eating before you hit play. Godspeed and don't forget your barf bag! In this episode it's Jef's turn to choose and He decided on a flick that has been haunting him for many moons 1989's "Hider in the House".  While not categorized as a horror film, the premise of Gary Busey living in a hidden room in your attic is one of the most horrific things Jef, Josh and Brian could ever imagine. This movie delivers all the horror tropes you could ask for and also begs the question, is it possibly an off season sequel to Halloween? Meanwhile, the FM3 have long been worried about a Hider in the Scary Movie Research Center, there is plenty of candy, beers and Brian's sweatshirts to wear that a creep could live comfortably that is until the day he started popping up trying to convince Brian and Josh that Jef had another podcast he was cheating on them with. But before it was too late, Jef discovered his stash of old beans and playboy's in the supply closet and had to battle him to the death so he could keep Forever Midnight going. Whooo, That was a close one.

The horrible, unforgivable Demon Wind (1990). Now they need to decide if they are gonna fight amongst themselves, fight the approaching horde of Demons, hopefully saving themselves and humanity. It's 2026 and the FM3 are back in the saddle! This time around the guys are watching a Top Dawg Patreon pick. Chosen for the guys is the 2002 Nü Metal mess-terpiece "Queen of the Damned. Jef, Josh and Brian have been talking about checking this blood sucking blowout for many years. Finally they are forced to watch and listen as "The Vampire Lestat" becomes the hip Nü music that will usher in a Nü era of vampires wreaking havoc on the ears of the mortals. Get ready to Räwk!  

Tis the season to chat about trashy holiday horror! In this episode Jef, Josh and Brian dig deep into Santa's sack and hit the tippy bottom and come up with 1980's "To All A Good Night".  With arguably one of the worst VHS covers for a vintage Christmas slasher, this one doubles down by also being directed by the super creep from Last House on the Left, David Hess. However what it lacks in art, story and star power they fill in with blood, boobs, Santa and the one and only Harry Reems. So win win win!?
