Once in a blue moon, we find a song that is so wild and weird, it becomes a brick in the ever-growing metaphorical mansion that is In The Past ... and it's usually by a group of young African-American women from the 1950s (see: "Pork and Gravy" by The De-Lo's; "Chic-A-Boomer" by The Del-Rhythmettes; and "Rock-and-Ree-Ah-Zole" - to name just one - by The Bobbettes.) Dr. Schnall is a recognized expert and active researcher on the role of occupational stress in causing hypertension and cardiovascular disease, with a long-standing interest in the role that work organizations and psychosocial stressors play in their development. His interest in the subject has deep roots: it began while practicing medicine for 8 years at the Martin Luther King Health Center in the South Bronx, where he noticed that many patients diagnosed with hypertension showed remission of their high blood pressure while off medication — a finding that contradicted the established medical view of hypertension as an irreversible chronic disease. He subsequently received a three-year NIH/NHLBI postdoctoral fellowship in cardiovascular epidemiology at Columbia University, and his doctoral research — conducted in collaboration with Dr. Tom Pickering at Cornell Medical Center — became the longest-ever longitudinal study of work stress and ambulatory blood pressure, funded for 14 years. https://www.healthywork.org/https://unhealthywork.org/
