Mojo Perry at heart is a bluesman. He's toured in various places around the world with his "Rosie," one of his various cigar box guitars. He indulges in ambient and psychedelic guitar music and some of it even finds its way into his blues tunes. He's shared stages with the likes of Ana Popovic, Samantha Fish, and Carolyn Wonderland. His website bio says, "His singing carries a tender hopelessness, while his playing exudes raw defiance that resonates with people from all walks of life." Hello and welcome to How Did I Get Here? From The Vault! Today we go back to episode 238 with legendary blues artist, Carolyn Wonderland! This show was originally released on 1/14/2014. Below are my original notes form the show. My guest for episode 238 is the amazing Carolyn Wonderland! Since this show started I have gotten requests from you guys to get Carolyn on the show... well, here she is! I can still remember the first time I saw Carolyn play in 1991 at Zelda's in Houston like it was yesterday. I think it's because I had never seen anyone like her before. Carolyn is the real deal. She has transcended learning and playing the blues to being someone who is CREATING the blues. She is an amazing guitar player, singer, songwriter and whistler. I was really glad she was able to come by and talk. We talk about everything, her husband, A. Whitney Brown's amazing pepper collection, the Houston music/theater/comedy scene, Townes Van Zandt, touring, Europe, politics and much, much more. Carolyn is not only amazingly talented, she's also an incredibly beautiful person. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did. Let's get down! If you feel so inclined. Developments in the Uvalde school massacre: Conflicting and still-unclear reporting seems to show that school security and responding law enforcement barricaded the shooter inside a fourth grade classroom for as long as 40 minutes, during which most of the killings took place. The shooter is believed to have bought his two AR platform guns just after his 18th birthday and just days prior to the shooting. Governor Greg Abbott offers no specific solutions, saying new gun restrictions are "not a real solution" and that the assault that killed 19 children and two adults "could have been worse". "Red Flag" laws are being mulled as a potential way to curb access to guns by criminals or people experiencing mental issues. In addition to crowdfunding and blood donations, legal services are needed by the families of the victims - attorneys are implored to volunteer. Meanwhile, protests are expected at Friday's NRA event in Houston. The Uvalde event is the deadliest school shooting in state history, and Texas is now an national outlier for mass shootings, with five of the ten deadliest - four in schools - having occurred within our borders. Austin ISD is responding with a buildup of security at its campuses. New details in the Anna Moriah Wilson murder case indicate that Austin Police had arrested the suspect, Kaitlin Marie Armstrong, days prior to a warrant for murder being issued. Armstrong was released, however, because her date of birth on record did not match the date of birth on the warrant. Armstrong remains at large and is now believed to have traveled to New York City. Yelp has revealed its Top 100 Places To Eat In Texas list, and 18 establishments in Austin and the surrounding area made the cut, including #1 Paper Route Bakery. Speaking of lists, Austin has made high marks on two new ones: we've been named the 16th most bike-friendly city in America, as well as the nation's best place for new college grads to find first jobs. Texas Baseball gets revenge in the opening game of the Big 12 Tournament, shutting out Oklahoma State 4-0 - they face TCU today at 4pm, after the Horned Frogs beat Baylor on Wednesday. Texas Football legend Ricky Williams has officially changed his name to "Errick Miron". Live music for the weekend: the 50th Kerrville Folk Festival begins, and continues through June 12. Willie Nelson plays a three night stand Friday through Sunday at Whitewater Amphitheater north of New Braunfels. Friday shows include Superchunk and Sweet Spirit in a Hot Luck Festival gig at the Mohawk, and Still Corners at The Parish. Saturday and Sunday it's the annual Lone Star Jam event, this year at the new Round Rock Amp with the Eli Young Band, Shane Smith and the Saints and Reckless Kelly on Saturday, and Randy Rogers, Wade Bowen, and Kevin Fowler on Sunday. Saturday shows: Dreamfest with Bob Schneider, Carolyn Wonderland, Sir Woman, Gina Chavez and more at Dreamland in Dripping Springs, Abhi the Nomad at Empire Garage, and another Hot Luck gig with Shannon and the Clams at the Mohawk. Episode 198: It's a double shot of blues from Alligator Records this week. Christone "Kingfish" Ingram is the most exciting prodigy to hit the electric blues scene in decades. It helps his narrative that the 23-year-old hails from the cradle of the blues, Clarksdale, MS, where the Delta Blues Museum's education programs gave him his start. Now he's nominated for his second Grammy Award with his 2021 album 662. Carolyn Wonderland is more of a veteran (already in the Austin Music Awards Hall of Fame) but a new artist on Alligator at 48 years old. She's a gentle presence off stage and a blistering singer and electric guitarist on stage, and she's recently spent a few years touring the world in the band of English icon John Mayall. We talk about all that and her current disc Tempting Fate, produced with Dave Alvin.
A conversation with American blues singer-songwriter and musician - Carolyn Wonderland - https://carolynwonderland.com/
Sugaray Rayford, Invisible SoldierDave Specter, Buzz Me (ft Barkin' Bill Smith & Ronnie Earle)Dave Specter, Texas TopMose Wilson, Louisiana Two-stepMose Wilson, The Man You MissBlack Joe Lewis & The Honeybears, Five DollarsBig Chief Monk Boudreaux, Choo ChooRay Stevens, Hoochie Coochie DancerThe Record Company, Gotta Be Movin'Chickenbone Slim, Wild Eyed WomanCarolyn Wonderland, Fragile Peace And Certain WarThe Band of Heathens, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Papa Was a Rollin' StoneGov't Mule, Hole In My SoulBilly Walton Band, Hell Or Highwater
No stranger to virtual jams, Austin’s guitar ace has been hosting online sessions for fans and followers in her JV Squad Facebook group for over a year. Now, with the coronavirus pandemic leaving much of the country homebound, she’s pledged to drop an internet jam session each night at 9:30 p.m. In addition to singing and playing guitar, she might hop on the piano or treat listeners to tunes from her new Jackie the Robot DJ set. “It’s all on the table now. I mean, last night’s show featured Jackie doing a rendition of ‘Keep On’ on the ukulele,” Venson’s manager (and fiance) Louie Carr said on Tuesday. facebook.com/jackievenson. On March 16, when the South by Southwest Music Festival should have been kicking off but Austinites were hunkered down at home instead, DJ Mel took to the turntables to host the first edition of this virtual body-rock-a-thon. Thousands of viewers from around the country tuned in. Expecting to play for a handful of “Austin homies,” he was “shocked” by the response, he told the Statesman on Sunday afternoon while combing through the 17,000 comments on his Facebook post. He’s decided to make the Saturday night jam a regular affair. The party will kick off at 6 p.m. and run till 10, and to keep the (virtual) event family-friendly, he plans to use radio edits of all your favorite rap tunes. facebook.com/DJ-Mel-48330349120 — D.S.S. RELATED: Thousands tune in to DJ Mel’s virtual dance party Sunday: Jeff Plankenhorn. Not since Junior Brown’s 1990s breakthrough with his “guit-steel” has an Austin-based artist become so specifically associated with a custom-made instrument as Plankenhorn’s trusty “plank,” a Dobro-like contraption. His versatility as a musician has long made him in high demand with acts including Joe Ely and the Resentments, the latter outfit having welcomed him into their fold many years ago for Sunday night shows at the Saxon Pub. With those shows on hold for now amid the coronavirus pandemic, Plankenhorn has staked out some time this Sunday for a virtual show of his own. 8 p.m. facebook.com/events/194330805185995. Don and Peter shared their experience performing music ecosystem audits for four cities. The 2015 Austin Music Census and their continuing studies of Charlotte, Pittsburgh, and Washington DC are more than doing a venue count. They gather the personal, qualitative stories of local life as an artist and musician in a community. They also began to take a look at what really then happens post-study with a community, including what happens with local community groups. Folks can end up swimming in different directions. They are beginning to have enough information to look across cities to compare and contrast the lives of artists. And in some cases, they have gathered up to 12 different ways that a single musician makes a living through music in this live and digitally connected age. They have great insights to share about how local makes a tremendous difference in what the superpowers are for a city. They also share how some smaller organizations and some smaller cities are making a difference and how it's more than the city -- it also is the ecosystem of the region. Guests: Don Pitts and Peter Schwarz, Co-Founders, Sound Music Cities About Sound Music Cities: Based in Austin, Texas, Sound Music Cities was born from direct experience in music-related policy, music development program implementations, and leadership of sound management initiatives. Founded by Don Pitts and Peter Schwarz in 2017, the team has extensive experience in music strategy that balances the needs of the music and nightlife industry with the needs of the community. Their growing list of clients includes WYEP Pittsburgh, The City of Pittsburgh Office of Nighttime Economy, The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, The City of Seattle Office of Film and Music, and the Government of the District of Columbia Office of Cable TV, Film, Music and Entertainment. Don Pitts: After 30 years in the music and entertainment industry, Don Pitts launched Sound Music Cities to help emerging and established music and entertainment cities find practical solutions to sound issues, and grow their music economy. Having garnered the nickname “The Sound Whisperer” from his tenure as the head of the City of Austin’s Economic Development Department’s Music and Entertainment Division where he reduced sound complaints by 70%, Don brings his experience and passion for creating vibrant music cities to Sound Music Cities and its clients. Originally from Nashville, Don has gone far and wide in the music industry, doing everything from managing bands and venues, to handling entertainment relations for Gibson Guitar, to co-founding the North American Music Cities Summit, to working in the public sector. His strategic perspective lies at the cross-section of these experiences – lending him the ability to navigate and bring together the political and industry landscapes. While with the City of Austin, Don’s leadership fueled programs to increase prosperity for musicians, music businesses and music venues – all important when building a sustainable economic engine. Don values political know-how, street-smarts and active listening skills – three things that help when beginning to connect the dots over the course of a large music ecosystem project. Peter Schwarz: Peter Schwarz brings almost four decades of experience as a musician and a business leader to the team. He recently completed a long-term commercial music industry plan for the City of Austin’s Economic Development Department, Music and Entertainment Division, as well as authored research studies for “The Pittsburgh Music Ecosystem Study” and the City of Seattle’s 2018 Music Industry Survey. He was previously for 14 years the executive-in-charge of all of Ray Benson’s holdings, including Asleep at the Wheel and Bismeaux Records. He oversaw album releases and artist management for Carolyn Wonderland, Willie and the Wheel, Raul Malo, A Ride With Bob, Texas Tornados, Wheeler Brothers, Aaron Behrens, and the 2015 GRAMMY-winner Still The King. Earlier experience includes festival coordination, arts programming, album producing, touring musician and composer (as a member and manager of Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys), protégé of master Cajun fiddler Dewey Balfa, and longtime musical collaborator with his father, Tracy Schwarz, of The New Lost City Ramblers. Schwarz is a graduate of Harvard College (BA) and the McCombs School of Business (MBA). For over 50 years, John Mayall has served as a pioneer of blues music, rightly earning him the title, "The Godfather of British Blues". After decades of touring and recording, in 2013 John signed with producer Eric Corne's label, Forty Below Records, and has since been experiencing an artistic and career renaissance, including a Blues Hall of Fame induction in 2015. This Friday Forty Below Records will release Nobody Told Me, Mayall’s new studio album. Born in the UK in 1933, Mayall first became attracted to jazz and blues through his father's 78s record collection, listening to guitarists like Big Bill Broonzy, Brownie McGhee, Josh White and Leadbelly. However once he heard the sounds of boogie woogie piano giants Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson and Meade Lux Lewis, he was hooked. As a young teen, he began learning the guitar and later, the harmonica, inspired by Sonny Terry, Sonny Boy Williamson and Little Walter. The rest is history: mentoring future stars like Paul McCartney, Mick Fleetwood, and Eric Clapton, moving to Los Angeles, more live and studio albums, and world touring his band The Bluesbreakers. Never stopping, he recently recorded albums in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and began playing live as a trio. His 2017 European tour resulted in the critically acclaimed live recording Three for the Road that showcased his skills on organ, piano and harmonica. In 2018, he recruited Texas blues guitarist Carolyn Wonderland -- the first female guitarist in his permanent lineup- for recording and touring in 2019. Mayall also has a new studio album in the works which features a full blown lineup with guest contributions from an impressive list of extraordinary, well-known guitarists.

Girls who Jam: Women's history month
It’s a big country, this America, and Americana music is concomitantly enriched by its host nation’s geography and diversity. That was on display Wednesday night as Roots hosted artists from New York, Texas, Massachusetts and Washington. Strings were stretched, along with rules and genre boundaries. There’s no point in reaching for a fancy way to say it. This one was a delight and the crowd seemed to agree, what with all the frequent standing and applauding.

This edition of The Roadhouse takes a tour of diverse neighborhoods throughout the blues. The Cash Box Kings, Chris Duarte Group, Blind Boy Fuller, Carolyn Wonderland, and Harrison Kennedy help deliver an hour that might be vertigo-inducing for its mixture of styles. But, it's a good vertigo that makes for the 530th hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

Carolyn Wonderland, Big Pete, Fleetwood Mac, and Dion help make a great case that the blues is alive and well. Welcome to the very first MusicForaWedding podcast from Will Taylor and Strings Attached. I am Will Taylor and I am here with my wonderful assistant Amanda Cevallos. Hey Amanda!Amanda: Hello. Will Taylor: And this is the first podcast to help you figure out the music for your wedding and all the ins and outs you want to make this fun and if you have any questions for us, send an email to Will@WillTaylor.com and put in the subject field ‘Wedding music podcast’ to anything you want to know. We’d love to help you out, love to hear from you. Just send us an email toWill@WillTaylor.com, any question you have about wedding music.Today’s main topic, this is our first podcast and we are just going to talk about the role of music in a wedding. Why should we have music anyway in a wedding? What makes it important in a wedding? But before we get to that I want to tell you a little bit about myself and about Amanda.Since 1989 I have helped couples realize their wedding music dreams and I have played the violin, viola and guitar professionally in the Austin area for over 24 years, including 20 years with the Austin Lyric Opera orchestra. With my group Strings Attached I have worked with artists like Bob Schneider, Shawn Colvin, P Diddy, _______[1:55], Tish Hinojosa, Carolyn Wonderland, Gary Clark Jr. - we bring a lot of experience to the table in helping the couples figure out what they want for their wedding.Amanda Cevallos went to college at the University of Montana where she studied dance choreography and performance as well as entertainment management at the U of M School of Business. In 2009 she came back to Texas where she was raised and in March 2010 she joined the team at Will Taylor and Strings Attached.Your musical event planning needs are her first priority. She knows the ins and out of the Strings Attached repertoire built over our 20-year history in the business. But she also has her finger on the pulse of what’s current and popular culture, which makes her an ideal booking agent and a facilitator. So welcome Amanda. I am so glad to have her here. She has been with us for over an year now. I think we have a really great thing going on and she has a lot to turn in on and I am just going to invite her to interrupt me when appropriate. Let me talk about music and let me share a few quotes:“Music is the shorthand of emotion” – Leo Tolstoy.“Music is what feelings sound like. Music is the universal language of mankind” – Longfellow. So what is the role of music at a wedding? When you think of a wedding ________[3:22] that is kind of like planning a major life event, in a way it’s like a movie production or producing a play. It’s not unlike that. This is an event that’s going to happen one time in your life and what would it be like if you went to see a play or a movie and there is no music accompanying it? It’s just people talking to each other. From my standpoint it might not have as much emotional impact and for me the role of music at a wedding is to help the emotional impact. A wedding is very emotional experience. So music can help the emotion be experienced more deeply by not just the couple but all the people that are attending, and that’s one thing to remember is that as you are planning your wedding, this is for your family and your friends as much for them as it is for you and you want them to have this memorable emotional experience. Now for most people it’s also a religious experience and music is a big part of the emotional impact of spirituality. So it’s like setting the scene. It’s a soundtrack for a grand production that you are planning. So I’d like to ask you to think in your mind and visualize the scene, like a scene in a movie. What is your soundtrack going to sound like?At this point it might be nice just to talk about one of the parts of the other wedding where there can be music, the different scenes, like in a movie you have a scene. So you start from the top of the movie, of your wedding. Usually the first point of contact is when the guests are walking into the ceremony location. In some cases it will be a church; in other cases it might be an outdoor wedding. So you set that scene with maybe a string quartet. If that’s not your particular style, maybe you have somebody singing middle-eastern music or folk music or you have a solo singer – something to give the guests maybe a little entertainment while they are sitting down and getting adjusted to the ceremony.Amanda: Something to set the tone so when they walk into something, they walk into something special. As soon as the door is open there’s this beautiful sound coming from wherever the setting is and it really sets the tone. Will Taylor: Yeah, so think about what is the first impression musically you want to get your guests. Again, I’d like to focus on getting away from traditional should be’s if you have that luxury. Now you may be doing a wedding where the church gives you a specific list of pieces then you want to follow that and share that with your music organizer, whoever is playing to your music. At Strings Attached we can handle the music from the beginning to the end and we are very experienced in handling these kinds of things. We have done music for up to 20 years. So you want to lean on your provider, lean on your wedding coordinator. We have done anywhere from 100s to over a thousand of these and so we are going to know things about putting together the music and we are going to be able to save you time and effort, so lean on your professionals. And if you are the asked scenario [7:02] check out stringsattached.org. We love to help organize and make your wedding dreams come true. Amanda will answer the call. You can call her directly at (512) 944…Amanda: 8407 or you can email me at bookstringsattached@gmail.com and just very quickly before we go I just want to be sure to mention our wedding reception band because I think that’s we get calls for above. We get calls to play strings but we also have a wedding reception band that is fantastic. And we have another thing called ‘TheClassicRockSeries.com’ and it’s a series of tribute shows and we use a lot of the songs from these tribute shows for the wedding band but we also have other tunes on that website. Will Taylor: We’d also like to mention, like I said in the beginning of the podcast, Strings Attached can handle the music from the beginning to the end of the reception, the very last note. We are sort of a one-stop shopping source for your live music or live wedding music needs here in the Austin central Texas area.So we talked a lot about the ceremony music and the cocktail music and we also have a really versatile, exciting, dynamic wedding music variety band and it’s about a six piece ensemble. We can do anything from 60s Motown to 80s pop tunes to Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, a bit of country music, a bit of folk music…Amanda: Swing, Jazz…Will Taylor: Pretty much everything that you can imagine we can do at really exhaustive song list online and you can check and see that variety right now. We provide really beautiful lighting systems. We also have a sound system that is high quality and bring our own sound man. We come early and setup and make sure everything is ready to go way ahead of time. We will also MC your event if you have special announcements that you like us to make. We are able to do all that. Amanda: We’ll create the scripts based on your schedule. Will Taylor: We’ll create a script based on your schedule and everything will be taken care of – the high quality, it will be dynamic, and if you have any creative ideas we can customize it to your event.I had a wedding in 2008 where I had a 9-piece band and the client picked every single piece of music. Now we did have to charge for that but we made it happen for them and they had four sets of music and they picked every single piece of music and we worked with them and made it work. So we can go from the extreme, working out every little detail or we can also help you and design with suggestions.Amanda: We have a client right now that loves us and hired us because they came to our tribute shows and they know what we are capable of. They also have their own ideas too so they are allowing us to be creative and then they are adding a list of songs that they just can’t live without and so we have added eight tunes through our set list for them for a fee of course, but that’s an option. So don’t rule anything out with your wedding band. Will Taylor: Exactly, and if you want to hear us live we have a monthly residency at the Nutty Brown Café here in Austin, Texas. If you just look up ClassicRockSeries.com you will see a schedule of shows. Our next show is coming up on July 30. Again, that’s ClassicRockSeries.com and also I want to mention that a lot of this information we have talked about, our Frequently Asked Questions, our worksheet – all that is available at celebratewithstringsattached.com or you can email us and we will send you any of this. If you have any questions, again, just email Will@WillTaylor.com and we will mention these on the podcast in the next episode.
